Richard: "Ah, gentlemen. I want you to meet our new trauma surgeon at Seattle Grace. Major Owen Hunt, you remember Derek Shepherd, Mark Sloan." he stops the pair at the elevator as himself, Sky, and Owen come over to them

Derek: "He stole my patient."

Mark: "Mine, too."

Owen: "Now you'll get a chance to steal mine."

Derek: "Looking forward to it."

Mark: "Ah, can't wait."

Richard: "I just talked to a friend of mine at the DOH. Now that we have Owen, we are being reclassified as a level I trauma unit by the end of the month."

Derek: "That explains it." he mutters to Mark as Sky chuckles a little

Sky: "Come on. Still got a lot to show you. This hospital can be a maze."

Owen: "Nice seeing you guys again."

Mark: "You too." he nods at him as Derek hums and as Sky and Owen go to walk away she turns and gives Derek a teasing look and he shakes his head in amusement at her before stepping in the elevator

Bailey: "Sky" she calls after her as she walks down the hall with Owen "Are you busy today?"

Sky: "Uh the chief wanted me to see Dr. Hunt through his first skills lab. Why?"

Bailey: "How would you like to work with me on an inoperable tumor?"

Sky: "An inoperable tumor?"

Bailey: "That's what I said" she smiles at her "We'll be removing it from a 10 year old girl. So...what do you say?"

Sky: "Sure. Let me just get him set up and then I'll come meet you."

Bailey: "Can't wait." she says excitedly before hurrying away

Sky: "You don't mind do you...if I leave?"

Owen: "Oh no problem. Gives me a chance to prove myself more to you. So, anything I should know about the doctors here?"

Sky: "Oh there's a lot you need to know." she chuckles to herself as they head towards the room

Sky: "Alright listen up. This is Dr. Hunt. Over the next few months, him and I will be teaching you how to work quickly and efficiently to keep someone alive in circumstances where the safe bet is they're dead by the end of the hour."

Owen: "Now does anyone have a problem working with live tissue?"

Cristina: "Live tissue?" she whispers to Izzie in confusion

Izzie: "I don't know."

Sky: "Anyone? Speak now. In fact, leave now. If not, we own you for the rest of the day." she says as everybody stays silent

Owen: "Good. Here we go" they pull back curtains to show pigs lined up laying on beds "Each resident gets a pig. Interns assist. Hang on" he stops them from moving and pulls out his knife and stabs the pigs in the stomach. As he does the residents and interns gasps out in shock "Go ahead. Save their lives." he orders as they look at him in shock

Izzie: "You're a monster."

Owen: "They're under. They didn't feel any pain. Ask the veterinarian." he nods over to the man in the back

Izzie: "You stabbed them."

Cristina: "So we can save them." she steps out from behind Lexie as her and Owen make eye contact

Izzie: "We can practice on...on surgical mannequins. We can learn to do the exact same stuff."

Owen: "Does that mean you're out?"

Izzie: "Yeah, I'm out." she looks at everybody before storming out the room

Owen: "That's Izzie Stevens, right?" he whispers to Sky as they watch the woman walk out the room

Sky: "Yep."

Owen: "In that case, who wants two pigs?" he asks as everybody raises their hands

Sky: "You good here?"

Owen: "Yeah, I'm okay."

Sky: "Alright. Have fun."

Meredith: "Tori Begler, age 10. Tori has an abdominal leiomyosarcoma. The tumor is wrapped around her celiac artery, her splenic artery and her left gastric artery. It is considered unresectable."

Bailey: "Did you understand a word of that, Tori?"

Tori: "Not really." she says as Bailey chuckles a little

Bailey: "Grey."

Meredith: "This is Anatomy Jane." she holds out the doll for her to see

Tori: "She's kinda funny looking."

Meredith: "She is funny looking, but she's very helpful. So the tumor...is way down here in your belly. It's hard to get at because it's underneath all these organs."

Man: "Hard, but not impossible, right?"

Richard: "We're gonna try everything we can."

Woman: "Everything you can should include your cardiothoracic gal. Dr. Stewart at Seattle Pres. said the vasculature is the big problem, and you stole the best cardiovascular surgeon he's ever had. If she's not on Tori's team, we're leaving and going to San Francisco" she declares before holding out a container to them "Fudge? It's homemade."

Bailey: "Okay, let's guide the catheter into the celiac axis."

Meredith: "Turning on the fluoro."

Bailey: "What the...uh, excuse me a second" she goes over to where she sees two people standing on the other side of the window "Uh, hello. You can't be in here."

Tori : "That's my uncle Pat and aunt Jean. They like to make sure I don't get lonely."

Bailey: "She's not lonely. Dr. Grey, Rivers, and I are very entertaining" she says as Meredith and Sky give a breathy chuckle and Tori coughs a little "Uh, uh, okay, fine. Um, they have to stay in there, though. There's radiation in here." she says as they nod their heads in understaning

Sky: "All right, let's, uh, inject dye."

Tori: "Is everything okay?" she asks after they notice something and they don't say anything

Bailey: "Uh, it...it's fine."

Izzie: "Owen Hunt is a murdering, sadistic bastard." she comes over to Derek and slams her folders onto the counter

Derek: "Let me guess. First wet lab?"

Izzie: "He's stabbing pigs, defenseless pigs. Or as he likes to call them,"live tissue," because god forbid you should call them animals. And Sky is just letting them."

Derek: "Well, she is the head of trauma, Stevens. And believe it or not working on actual tissue instead of manicans can be more effiecent. It may not be ideal, but if that's how they do things, you should roll with it."

Izzie: "We don't need live subjects. What happened to first do no harm? That's not just about humans. That's about all living things."

Derek: "Actually, I think it's just about humans."

Izzie: "I'm saying this to you as my roommate and not my attending. You disgust me." she storms away

Erica: "You paged me?" she comes into the room where Bailey is in

Bailey: "I've got a 10-year-old girl with a tumor wrapped around her aorta. I'm putting together a team."

Erica: "This is her angio?"

Bailey: "She just-"

Erica: "This thing is wrapped around five major arteries."

Bailey: "It's bad, but I've got a couple of ideas."

Erica: "Good for you. Try them on someone who might actually live."

Bailey: "I-I admit, it doesn't look great, but her family mentioned you by name, so I thought-"

Erica: "That's nice, but I really don't care."

Bailey: "Well, I do."

Erica: "Don't get emotional, Bailey. No one likes a girl who gets emotional."

Bailey: "Still...I'd like you on my team."

Lexie: "I'm sorry about this, little guy. It must have been awful. One day, you're at some beautiful farm out in the country breathing in the fresh air, lounging in the mud with all your friends, and next thing you know, you're sedated and stabbed in some skills lab."

Cristina: "Get it together three."

Sky: "Heads up everyone" she comes into the skills lab "Karev take your interns down to the ER. Dr. Hunt will meet you down there."

Alex: "Trauma?"

Sky: "Multiple M. V. C. Six incoming. O'Malley, lab's over. Do your charts."

George: "What about my pig?"

Owen: "She's got it." he points to Cristina

Cristina: "What?"

Owen: "You're staying here."

Cristina: "Wait, with a half-dozen crash victims coming into the pit?"

Owen: "You got four struggling victims right here. Keep them alive."

Cristina: "Wait, all of them? Karev gets to work on mangled people, and I'm stuck with 300 pounds of bacon?"

Owen: "Live bacon, and it better be that way when I get back."

Paramedic: "35-year-old backseat passenger. Forehead versus window, and the window won. Also has second-degree burns on the left side. Vitals stable en route."

Owen: "Trauma one. What do you got?"

Izzie: "Charles hit, 46, positive ecchymosis over abdomen. Last B.P. in the field...96 over 68."

Owen: "Do you know how to use a trauma ultrasound?"

Izzie: "Yes."

Owen: "In that case, he's all yours in trauma two. What do you...can I help you gentlemen?" he asks when Mark and Derek come over to him

Mark: "Dr. Karev paged us."

Owen: "Well, he shouldn't have. We got it covered. Thanks."

Derek: "You have a head injury and burns, so I don't think you have it covered."

Owen: "Karev, are you a doctor?" he looks into the room where Alex is in

Alex: "Uh, yes, sir."

Owen: "Are you capable of assessing a patient's injuries?"

Alex: "Yep."

Owen: "Like I said, we got it covered."

Derek: "You know what? We're here. Why don't you let us just dive in?"

Owen: "Appreciate the offer, Shepherd, but I want my residents to learn how to deal with trauma. They're not gonna learn as much or as fast if they stand back and watch attendings do it, unless that attending is Dr. Rivers or me."

Erica: "Three other hospitals have already sent them away, and if we were smart, we would do the same thing."

Bailey: "What is the matter with you?" she snaps in annoyance

Sky: "We can try and cut around the stomach."

Erica: "No, the only way to do that is to actually take it out."

Bailey: "They've done ex vivo autotransplants."

Erica: "Yeah, with livers and kidneys."

Meredith: "So why don't we take out the stomach and the kidneys?"

Erica: "Oh, yeah, that'd be great if you wanted to kill her. We're talking about two completely different blood supplies here. So, no, not a good idea, Grey" she says before seeing people into the room from the window "Who are those people?"

Sky: "Uh, that's Tori's dad Randy and his brother Pat and Pat's wife Jean and Tori's brother David and..."

Richard: "Why are they staring at us, Dr. Bailey?"

Bailey: "I don't think they're staring at us, chief. I think they're just waiting, seeing if we have any news."

Sky: "I'll be right back." she says when her pager goes off

Erica: "Close the blinds, Grey."

Sky: "You paged me?" she comes over to the nurses desk where Derek is at

Derek: "Rambo is completely out of control."

Sky: "What?"

Derek: "Hunt. He kicked me out of my own E.R. Can you get down there."

Sky: "Did he kill somebody?"

Derek: "Not yet."

Sky: "Then call me when he does."

Derek: "Sky." he stops her from leaving and she sighs out

Sky: "Look I am putting him through his paces for the next couple of days. I want to see how he works before I tell him where he needs to improve. You might not think I'm listening to you but I am. Trust me."

Derek: "Okay." she nods and goes to walk away but turns back to him

Sky: "Hey what's up with your girlfriend and that doll?"

Derek: "Anatomy jane?" he asks amused

Sky: "It wouldn't be a problem except Richard keeps looking at it like it's going to jump across the table and stab him." she jokes before heading back into the room

Sky: "Any luck?"

Erica: "What do you think?" she sighs out in annoyance "Look, I know you want to be number one, Richard, but we can't take in every charity case that comes along. It is a huge waste of resources."

Richard: "It's your call, Dr. Bailey" he sighs before looking over at Meredith "Grey, put that away. This isn't playtime."

Meredith: "I'm not playing. I'm thinking. What if we just took out each of the organs where the tumor interferes with the blood supply?"

Erica: "By the time you clamp off the aorta, you run the risk of damaging the other organs."

Meredith: "Even if you take them out one by one?"

Erica: "You don't have the time, Grey."

Sky: "What about if we made the time?" she asks as they start to think about it
Richard: "Dr. Bailey, let's throw some stuff up on the board."

Alex: "C.T. showed a subdural hematoma. Should I book an O.R.?"

Owen: "First things first. His scalp is bleeding like stink. What do you do next?"

Alex: "Normally, I'd page Shepherd."

Owen: "Shepherd's not here. What do you do to stop the bleeding?"

Alex: "Suture the laceration, tie off the bleeders."

Owen: "That'll take two hours. What would you use in this room to take care of this?"

Alex: "Staples?"

Owen: "It's his forehead. You...you want this guy to look like Frankenstein for the rest of his life?" he asks as Alex looks around the room

Alex: "Skin glue."

Owen: "Excellent, Karev. Clean it, close it, and stick a pressure dressing over it."

Owen: "How are you feeling, Mister, uh, Hiott?"

Hiott: "Not too good."

Owen: "How are we gonna make Mr. Hiott feel better?"

Izzie: "The ultrasound showed free fluid. We'll get him to a C.T. to confirm, but he's pretty much O.R. bound."

Owen: "Excellent. Is that tetanus? You know who you have to thank for the invention of the tetanus shot, Stevens? Horses. The first experiments...done on horses."

Woman: "You want to take out all of her abdominal organs...intestine, stomach, everything?"

Man: "All at once?"

Richard: "That's right."

Bailey: "We'll put the organs on ice while we dissect out the tumor, then reconnect the vessels using synthetic grafts and put the organs back in."

Woman 2: "Why didn't Graham or Fleisher over at Lake Washington suggest this? They're a couple of smarties."

Sky: "Probably because it's never been done before." she says as a nervous look overcomes their faces

Erica: "It is extremely risky. There are any number of things that could go wrong."

Woman: "I-I don't know, Randy. Maybe we should try more chemo."

Bailey: "Uh, with all due respect, Mrs. Begler, I don't think there's time for that."

Man: "Is it gonna save her life?"

Ricahrd: "It's your best shot...your only shot."

Man: "Then do it."

Ricahrd: "Okay."

Bailey: "Uh, Grey, why do we dissect down in quadrants?" she asks once they begin Tori's surgery

Meredith: "Uh so we can get a good luck at the vessels to make sure we have enough for reconstruction."

Bailey: "Very good."

Sky: "A little suction right in here, please."

Nurse: "Mr. Begler is on the phone. O.R. desk wants to know if they can put him through."

Richard: "No."

Nurse: "He's pretty insistent."

Richard: "And I'm pretty busy."

Bailey: "If you could hold this up a little bit higher, Dr. Grey. I want to make sure to avoid... that." they watch as blood squirts out before the machines start beeping erractically

Sky: "Okay, let's get some clamps. Another clamp, please."

Ricahrd: "Right there."

Bailey: "Let's hang another bag of blood."

Erica: "You better hope the aorta is not that friable, otherwise, all the blood in the world won't save this girl." she says as Bailey looks at her in annoyance behind her mask

Ricahrd: "Dr. Bailey."

Bailey: "Removing the organs on three. Ready. One...two...three." they take the organs out and put them in a bowl as Richard and Sky move over to another table

Ricahrd: "Very good. All right. Let me have it."

Sky: "We'll need medium and large vessel loops to dissect out the tumor."

Nurse: "Mr. Begler again. He wants to talk to you about his daughter."

Ricahrd: "Well, I'm pretty busy right now."

Nurse: "I already told him that."

Richard: "Well, tell him again."

Nurse: "I've told him 18 times."

Bailey: "Chief, you need to go talk to them" she says as he turns to give her a look "Hey, you did put me in charge."

Richard: "I'll be back." he sighs out putting the instruments down

Derek: "What the hell? Look at this crap."

Mark: "Is that glue? You used skin glue?"

Alex: "Dr. Hunt wanted to get him outta there pretty quick."

Derek: "Yeah, well, because Dr. Hunt didn't have you revise the wound, he could lose half his face."

Mark: "You can't rotate a flap, you call someone who can."

Alex: "Well, he says the E. R. is like being in the field. You use what's available."

Mark: "What, uh, qualifies us as a war zone, Karev, our undermanned gift shop, the lukewarm drinks from the coffee cart?"

Derek: "He's a meatballer. What do you expect?"

Alex: "Meatballer?"

Mark: "Trauma guys. They just slap it together."

Owen: "Steven have you ever used a G.I.A. stapler?"

Izzie: "No, but I'm ready. I can handle it."

Owen: "Answer me three questions, and I'll let you."

Izzie: "Okay."

Owen: "Question one...Polio Vaccine. Which animal do you have to thank for that?"

Izzie: "Is this really necessary?"

Owen: "Only if you want to use that stapler."

Izzie: "Flipper babies." she sighs out

Owen: "What?"

Izzie: "Flipper babies. 10,000 babies were born with birth defects in the 1950s because their pregnant mothers took thalidomide, first developed on guinea pigs. The guinea pigs didn't have any side effects."

Owen: "Your point?"

Izzie: "My point is that humans and animals have different physiologies, they have different reactions."

Owen: "They can have different reactions. Doesn't mean that they will."

Izzie: "Tell that to those 10,000 babies and their mothers."

Owen: "So the Polio Vaccine...developed using mice and monkeys."

Izzie: "You can keep your stapler. It's not worth it."

Richard: "Dr. Bailey, can you dissect down anymore?"

Bailey: "There's nothing to dissect. There's barely any artery left."

Sky: "What about if we extend the gore-tex graft?"

Erica: "No, what's leftis too friable."

Meredith: "So we can't reconnect the organs to the vessels?"

Bailey: "Not at this moment, no."

Meredith: "But if we can't reconnect the organs, they won't reperfuse and they'll just die."

Erica: "Yes, they will." she says as Bailey looks up at her in annoyance

Meredith: "Is it too late for a transplant?"

Erica: "Well, we'd have to find six good organs in about eight hours."

Meredith: "It's too late for a transplant."

Erica: "And a gold star for Grey."

Bailey: "We could try to put in more gore-tex." she stammers

Erica: "Oh, put even more synthetic material in her?"

Sky: "What about a saphenous vein graft?"

Erica: "No, she's already getting acidotic. That sort of thing has to be preplanned."

Bailey: "Yeah, so what's your idea?"

Erica: "Excuse me?"

Bailey: "I mean, you're good at shooting down every idea we come up with. What's yours?" she asks as Sky and Meredith look between the two awkwardly

Erica: "It was my idea not to do this in the first place, Dr. Bailey."

Bailey: "Yeah, you made that very clear every chance you got."

Richard: "Shut up. I don't care who had what idea when. Get over yourselves. Shut up and talk to each other." he snaps at them

Bailey: "What about...using...human umbilical vein? I mean, ready to go, already heparinized."

Richard: "Okay. I like it. Erica, what do you think?"

Erica: "It could work. It's Dr. Bailey's call. If she wants to do it."

Bailey: "I do."

Richard: "In that case, let's do it."

Owen: "Nice work on the valve. First developed in pigs, but more recently cows." he makes a cow noise

Izzie: "Are you done beating me up for the day? Because I'd like to go home."

Owen: "I was just trying to teach you."

Izzie: "You want to teach us? Take us to the simulab with the plastic guys who have heart rates and blood pressure and croak when you nick an artery."

Owen: "Until you apply scalpel to skin, Stevens, you're just going through the motions."

Izzie: "That attitude, that's from before. We have the technology now. We don't have to torture live creatures."

Owen: "No, you don't get to accuse me of torture. Those animals felt no pain."

Izzie: "You don't know that. You don't know that. You don't know what they felt. You don't know how scared they were. Animals are sensitive and intelligent creatures. And that is not me being emotional, that is simply the truth. You want me to learn from your methods? You want me to learn anything from you? Then don't stab pigs in front of me and tell me that the sky isn't blue. You are torturing god's creatures in an age where we have the technology that no longer requires us to. If you want to do that, go ahead, but don't tell me I'm less of a doctor for walking away."

Richard: "We've got some blood pooling the lower left quadrant. Can anybody see where it's coming from?"

Bailey: "Here. This graft. Satinsky clamps and 4-0 prolene."

Sky: "Waiting, Dr. Bailey."

Richard: "Still waiting, Dr. Bailey."

Bailey: "Okay, release clamps."

Meredith: "No pulsation."

Bailey: "Come on. Come on" she mutters as she massages it before they watch as it starts pulsing "Reperfusion complete." they all chuckle in relief

Richard: "Everyone, hell of a job."

Derek: "Hey how'd the surgery go?"

Sky: "Well other than Bailey and Erica going at it, it was a success. She should be fine."

Derek: "Nice. Look I know you wanted to give him a few days but Hunt messed up and I need to tell him. Are you in or not?"

Sky: "Fine" she sighs "Let's hear it."

Derek: "Come on" she follows him to an oncall room where he opens the door to find Mark laying in the bed as Callie covers herself with the blankets  "I'm gonna yell at the major general. You want to come?"

Mark: "Hell yeah. Be right there."

Sky: "Hey, Torres." she calls out before shutting the door

Callie: "Hey."

Sky: "Hunt, can we talk to you?" she walks over to where he's standing at the ER desk

Owen: "Sure."

Mark: "Karev." he motions for him to leave

Owen: "No, no, he can stay."

Derek: "You want Karev to hear how you screwed up the flap on my head trauma, that's fine with me."

Owen: "My job's to keep him alive. That's what I did."

Derek: "No, what you did was almost maim a guy for the rest of his life. You're lucky I saved the blood supply."

Owen: "So what would you have done?"

Mark: "Well, you got a man with a deep scalp wound and two of the best surgeons in the country standing 10 feet away from him. I would've asked those two surgeons to step in. That's what I would've done."

Owen: "I mean medically. What would you have done medically so I can do better?" he asks as the two look at him stunned by his words "Listen, I recognize there's different ways of doing things, even the basics. Over here, if someone appears dead, you go to them first. In Iraq, if someone appears dead, you don't go to them. This is day one for me, so if you think there's a better way, then tell me, and I'll listen." he finishes as Sky gives him a small smile before patting Derek and Mark on the back

Sky: "Bet you two are feeling like real jackasses right now huh?" she asks as they sigh out and she looks over at Owen "Didn't I tell you."

Owen: "Yeah, you did." he nods as the two men turn to look at her in confusion and she gives them smiles

Richad: "Again, both of you, great job." he says after they finish scrubbing out and he leaves the room

Erica: "Thank you" she says as Bailey gives her a look before giving a breathy laugh "Is there a problem, Dr. Bailey?"

Bailey: "I just find it hard to believe you're accepting congratulations, considering you didn't want to do this operation in the first place. And when you finly did do it, you fought me every step of the way."

Erica: "And yet, you still had a world-class heart surgeon by your side."

Bailey: "You may be a fine surgeon...God knows I know that...but not today. Today you were a pain in the ass. A nay-saying, llying, consistently negative pain in the ass. At no point did you encourage me or do anything to make me think this surgery could be anything but a failure. And it wasn't just me. You made it as hard as humanly possible for all of us. So, yeah, we did do a nice job today. We did a great job today, but that wasn't thanks to you. That was thanks to me and the chief and Sky Rivers and Meredith Grey and Anatomy Jane." she snaps before walking out the room

Sky: "Dr. Hunt" she comes up next to him as they walk down the halls "Now that it's the end of your first day here, what do you think? Regretting signing on?"

Owen: "Well everyone was exactly how you said they were."

Sky: "They grow on you. They're new to you, you're new to them. It'll take some time to get used to."

Owen: "Well I'm looking forward to it."

Sky: "So you want to stay?"

Owen: "For now at least."

Sky: "Good. I've never had a trauma guy...might be fun." she says as they chuckle a little

Owen: "I'll see you tomorrow."

Sky: "See ya."

Mark: "So no more on call room, huh?"

Callie: "Afraid not."

Mark: "That's, uh, that's too bad. I guess I'll, uh, see you around."

Callie: "Hey" she stops him from walking up the stairs "You wanna get a drink?"

Mark: "Really?" he turns around with a smile on his face

Callie: "Just 'cause we're not sleeping together doesn't mean we can't hang out, be friends. You're good for more than sex, Mark."

Mark: "I would love to get a drink."

Callie: "She's not gonna cry every time, right?"

Mark: "No, no, no. That passes" he says as he looks down the hall to see Sky and Owen talking "Do you think that's anything?"

Callie: "I don't know" she hums "He's cute. Far as I know they're both single."

Mark: "Yeah." he breathes out as he watches them part ways before walking out with Callie
