Chapter 16
Monday-Date with Josh
Amber's P.O.V
The day at school was exhausting to say the least. The girls kept burning glares into my back which I was surprised didn't have a hole in it. However the guys kept flirting and asking me out. I mean the nerve of some people. Yesterday you were dead to them and you come in renewed and suddenly everything is forgotten. How many times I stifled the urge to punch people, I truly lost count. Bringing myself out of my reverie, I brought the attention back to my Monday date; Josh. In the corner of my eye, I saw a large dry branch heading my way.
I ducked the swinging branch missing it by seconds. The air was pleasantly warm, telling me I made a good decision by wearing my dark red tank top. Several droplets of sweat formed on my brow as I continued climbing the hill. Josh could've picked a better place for our date, but I wasn't blaming him. Kind of.
The trek was exhilarating and by the time we reached the top of the hill, the sun was already setting. The orange ball spilled sunshine yellow, burnt orange and a deep violet colour that combined with them all, but that wasn't what caught my eye. It was the intense, electric blue which sizzled through the sky. Almost zapping the colours away and banishing the sun from the sky. The view alone had me catching my breath. There was something about that colour, somewhere I've seen it before, but the blue disappeared as quickly as it appeared. In its stead was a deep ocean blue and I averted my eyes towards my date.
Josh had a cocky stance even from where I was standing. He didn't even bother helping me when we weaved our way through the trees. I clenched my teeth furiously, not like I needed it anyway. Just then did he turn around and smile.
"Beautiful isn't it?" he asked inhaling the air. The terrain itself was magnificent, but to me the sky was magical with its majestic blue. Sighing, I plopped down onto the ground. I ran my hands through the blades which tickled my skin. Nature always had a way of communicating to me.
Josh also decided to sit down and open the picnic basket. He put the granola bars, water, freshly squeezed orange juice, a salad and a burger on the striped blue table cloth. I raised one eyebrow as he pushed the salad towards me. Then I snapped my head back and let out an amused laugh.
"Good joke," I complimented, then added, "So where's the real food?"
"This is the real food," he informed me, not a least bit impressed. I bit my lower lip and nodded. My hand shot out immediately to the burger and I grabbed it before he noticed.
"You can eat the rabbit food and I'll eat the good stuff," I replied, taking a solid bite out of the burger letting the taste settle on my taste buds.
"Very funny Amber!" Josh joked. I just stared at him quizzically. He didn't think I was joking. Was he?
"Look pal, I'm not one of your brainless bimbos which you can just feed salads like they are freaking rabbits," I bit through clenched teeth and gobbled down the burger. He stared at me with saucer wide eyes.
"You just ate my burger," he stated still in a trance.
"Obviously," I scoffed shaking my head. I pushed the salad over with my other hand while chugging down the orange juice.
"What's this?" he asked staring at the salad like it was an alien.
"The crap you tried to feed me," I answered and got up.
"Well the date was 'fun'. I guess," I told him putting inverted commas around the 'fun' with my fingers.
"You guess?" Josh asked lifting his head from the salad for the first time to look at me.
"I mean you did try to feed me rabbit food," I countered stretching.
"How was I supposed to know what you liked?"
"Well I don't know! You could've asked. That is the magic of using your tongue," I replied sarcastically. He stood up to my eye level.
"I know another thing I could use my tongue for," he said capturing the nape of my neck with his hands.
I tried pulling away but he just pulled my hair harder. Not managing to escape, I did the only thing I could think of at the time. Bringing myself closer to him and my hands hugged his torso. My head started leaning towards his and he closed his eyes. Just as our lips were going to touch, I brought my knee swiftly to his groin with a lot of force. He immediately staggered back and I ran for it. I stifled my laugh at the genius of my idea but didn't stop running down the hill.
Soon I heard footsteps following me. For some reason my gut twisted uncomfortably and I pumped my legs faster. There was something wrong, something terribly wrong. Suddenly I felt someone trying to grab my hand. Adrenaline kicked in immediately and I turned around to face my threat.
Shock enveloped me when I saw Josh behind me come to a stop as well. We were both panting and sweating. However Josh's light blue eyes were coloured a butterscotch, motley yellow. I frowned as I noticed the difference between his eyes. At the picnic they held that yellow tint but the light blue still dominated the colour of the iris. Even know that brown was lightly glazed over them.
There was something wrong with Josh. If I didn't know better I'd say he looked like he was...possessed. Vampires couldn't get possessed. Right? They were immortal especially fully awakened vampires. I swallowed the lump that formed at the base of my throat. I couldn't panic, it wouldn't solve anything.
Carefully, I slid my hand into my pocket and felt it for my cell phone. My fingers touched the plastic and I tried to recall where the letters were located so I could type a text message. Somehow I managed to type down something and I sent it to Rebecca, Darcy, Violet and mom. Hopefully.
A deep, ferocious growl emitted deep from Josh's throat. He bared his fangs in an animalistic kind of way, showing just how razor sharp they were. I started sweating profusely and Josh started edging closer towards me. I needed to buy time, every minute counted.
"So why attack me?" I asked nervously and I got a growl as an answer. Pretending to understand what he meant, I meekly nodded. Not like I wanted to piss him off so that he could add that to the reason he wanted to kill me.
"You know my meat doesn't taste good in fact there is nothing on my bones anyway," I forced a laugh and he hissed. Discouraging him wasn't going to work. Apparently.
"If you eat that kind of meat I saw you eat, I'm sure your own flesh will be quite a delicacy," Josh bit out from the chambers of his throat. I barely managed to stifle a shudder at those words. At least all those airheads out there didn't have to worry about a vampire wanting to eat their flesh or suck their blood. And here I prided myself in my 'healthy' appetite. Amber you are an idiot. An idiot I tell you.
"Really Josh. Do you want cholesterol before your next century? I mean I'm full of it, just see the type of food I eat," I tried reasoning but to no avail. He licked his lips as he was staring at my neck. That moment I regretted wearing my hair in a ponytail and a short tank top. It exposed my neck to him and that made a shiver run up my spine. Talking of me as food wasn't going to work. It only got me much unneeded attention. Always when I was cornered I start to babble idiotically but now wasn't the best time to admit my faults. I tried a different angle; compromise. Rebecca would be proud if I spread her ways. My mind nearly laughed at the thought. Nearly.
"How about this, you let me walk and I will never mention this again to anyone Josh?" I tried and he relaxed from his crouching position, only to chuckle at my offer.
"What good would that be my gem?" he asked shaking his head.
"Gem?" I cocked an eyebrow at him.
"Amber is a precious a stone after all like you and your...," he trailed off realizing he said too much.
"My what?"
"Nothing," he shrugged his shoulders and returned to his crouching position.
"And by the way amber is tree sap unlike the popular belief of it being a gem," I retorted, a smirk playing at the edges of my lips.
"Yes but even the crudest oil will be manufactured into a useful tool," Josh snarled, "Oh and my name is Styrr not the pathetic name Josh. I wanted you to know which name you would be moaning when I take your blood."
I swallowed and stepped into a fighting stance, my previous shaking returning to me at full force.
Styrr lunged at me and then everything became blurry as he approached me. I felt like I was losing consciousness and as if I lost control over my own body. My vision started to darken and a scarlet red colour flooded my vision.
That's when I blacked out.
