Chapter 25
Derek: "Let's see what you got here." he says to Burke as the two along with Sky sit at a table in Joe's near a dart board
Sky: "Nice" she compliments him as Derek goes to take his turn, turning to glare at Meredith while taking a sip from his drink before forcefully throwing the darts "You alright?" she asks seeing the look on his face
Derek: "I'm fine."
Sky: "You sure?" she asks into her cup
Derek: "Totally." he says going to grab the darts from the board as she purses her lips at him
The next morning Sky is in a bakery ordering her food and drink when a man comes over to her
Man: "Iced latte and cinnamon sugar morning bun" he says making her look up at him in surprise with a little hesitation on her face "Oh no-uh sorry. I don't mean to freak you out. It's just that I've seen you in here plenty of times" he says making her still look at him with apprehension "I'm not really helping my case. I-uh, my name's Benjamin, I own this place, I see you come in almost every morning, thought you looked really pretty, and I've kind of been working my way up to talking to you. Which is not been going well."
Sky: "It's fine. Uh, Sky." she says shaking his hand with a small smile
Benjamin: "Nice to meet you."
Sky: "So you own this place, huh?"
Benjamin: "Uh sort of. Co-owner if you will. I'm a lawyer at the firm a couple of blocks down. My mom owns this place but she broke her leg not too long ago so I come here in the mornings to help her out."
Sky: "That's really sweet of you."
Benjamin: "Yeah. So what do you say in exchange for my creepyness, you get another morning bun on the house. Could give it to your boyfriend."
Sky: "Oh uh, I don't have a boyfriend."
Benjamin: "Well I'm sure your husband might lke it."
Sky: "Don't have a husband either."
Benjamin: "Girlfriend?"
Sky: "No." she says chuckling a little
Benjamin: "Well I'll still give you a free one" he says grabbing her another bun before putting it in the bag with her other one and handing her, her drink "There you go."
Sky: "Thank you."
Benjamin: "So uh, if you couldn't tell I was trying to figure out if you were single and I was going to flirt with you some more but with the chance I mess that up I figured I'd just go for it, so uh would you like to go out with me?" he asks as she looks up at him with slightly wide eyes

Derek: "So he asked you out?" he asks when they walk along the halls towards the ER
Sky: "Yep."
Derek: "And what did you say?"
Sky: "I didn't say anything. My pager went off and I had to get here."
Derek: "What would you have said?"
Sky: "I don't know" she sighs out while grabbing a gown "I mean so far my track record with men hasn't been the best."
Derek: "I don't think you should let your past with Mark get in the way."
Sky: "There's also Jeremiah."
Derek: "You two were never together."
Sky: "Yeah but we had something that was more than...a doctor patient relationship."
Derek: "Still think you shouldn't let that get in the way of trying with this guy." he says as the ambulances start to arrive

Paramedic: "White male. GSW to the left shoulder. Multiple walking wounded. Five injured coming in behind us."
Meredith: "Why are they all in the hallway?" she asks coming over to put a gown on and seeing all the chaos going around them
Cristina: "Overflow from the ER."
Izzie: "Paramedic told me an employee went postal. Shot up a restaurant."
George: "I heard he got away."
Meredith: "Really?"

Cristina: "Neal Hannigan and Deborah Fleiss. They were paying when he came in."
Doctor: "She's got a through and through to the right arm. Good distal pulses. He's sustained a possible graze wound to the right back."
Sky: "Let's irrigate the wound and get them to X-ray and order a tet-tox for both."
Neal: "Take care of my Deborah first."
Deborah: "Oh, now you're concerned." she says making the two doctors look at the pair in confusion
Neal: "I said I was sorry."
Deborah: "Sorry? The shooting starts, you duck behind me and you're sorry?"
Cristina: "He ducked behind-you ducked behind her?" she asks giving him a disbelieving look
Neal: "It was instinct. I couldn't help it. Deb, honey, you know I love you."
Deborah: "Love means never having to use your girlfriend as a human shield!"
Neal: "We shared a bullet, Deborah. It went through you and into me! That's a sign we should be together forever. A sign."
Deborah: "No, Neal, this is a sign! She's squirting water through my arm. Look. I can see you through my arm. That's another sign!" she says holding up her arm to show him the hole through it
Sky: "Good luck." she says patting Cristina on the back before walking out the room

Sky: "Benjamin?" she calls out in confusion seeing him sitting next to someone on a gurney "What are you doing here? Are you ok? Were you shot?"
Benjamin: "Oh no. I'm fine. Just came to check on my friend" he says motioning to the guy laying on the bed who waves at her as she smiles before taking a look at his chart "So you work here?"
Sky: "Yep. Trauma attending."
Benjamin: "Attending...that's like one of the high ranked doctors right?"
Sky: "Yeah."
Benjamin: "Nice." he says making her chuckle a little
Sky: "Looks like your friend is going to need an xray to check for other injuries as well as an ortho consult. Grey" she calls out to the woman who comes over "Get him to xray and page Torres."
Grey: "Will do."
Sky: "We'll take good care of him." she says smiling at Benjamin who smiles back at her before she goes to check on other patients
Evan: "A doctor. Least she's an upgrade from your last one." he says seeing the look on Benjamin's face as he watches Sky walk away making him chuckle
Benjamin: "Shut up."

Brad: "You know, even with all these cuts, I don't feel any pain. I swear, I have the highest pain threshold of anybody I know."
Will: "God! If I could say something to that guy and not get fired..." he scoffs in annoyance when Sky comes over to check on him
Sky: "He can't fire me. Uh, Mr. Eckles? Brad? Uh, I'm happy for you that you're not feeling much pain from your very minor injuries. But there are a great many people in this hospital in a great amount of pain. See, they have bullets in their bones, in their chests, and in their brains. Bullets from a gun that was aiming for you. And although they can't say it because you are the boss of them, most of these people at this moment are praying not that they'll live, not that the pain will subside, they're praying to God for you at this moment to shut the hell up!" she says as he gives her a shocked look
Will: "Thank you." he mouths in appreciativeness when she walks past him
Sky: "No problem." she smirks at him and from across the room Benjamin smiles to himself having witnessed the moment

Derek: "A little sensitivity would be nice here, ok? They love their daughter. They don't want to let go."
Addison: "What they're doing is not about love, Derek. It's-it's-well, it's like you."
Derek: "Excuse me?"
Addison: "Like how you pretend to love me, but you're just using me to fill some need you have to be a good guy."
Derek: "Now is not the time to talk about this. We'll talk about this later."
Addison: "You walk away? That's all I get?"
Derek: "Just calm down please."
Addison: "You're not going to yell at me? Call me names? Or I don't know ignore me in an elevator?"
Derek: "What do you want from me, Addison?"
Addison: "I want you to care! I sleep with your best friend and you walk away. He comes out here from New York and rubs it in your face, and still you get a good night's sleep. What do I have to do? Oh! I know. Maybe what I should do is go out on a date with the vet. Because that seems to send you into a blind rage. Oh, but wait. That won't work either because I'm not Meredith Grey!" she yells out as Derek looks over the railing and she turns to see Sky, Richard, Meredith, and Cristina looking up at them as well as other doctors and patients. When seeing them looking at the pair, Derek walks away as Addison sighs out while Sky, Meredith and Cristina turn to look away awkwardly and Richard gives her a pointed look before walking away

Sky: "We haven't forgotten you, Will. We'll get you to the OR as soon as possible." she says coming over to check on him once again
Will: "My friend, Kendra...Dr. Grey said that if anybody had any information that they would let me know as soon as possible."
Sky: "I'm sorry." she sighs out in sadness as tears start to gather in his eyes and Brad comes over to them
Brad: "I'm going to get you some time off, man. I'm going to talk to the owner, make sure they keep your job for you. It's not your fault you got shot. Not my fault either" he says making Sky turn to give him a look as he starts to stutter a little "You know, I-I didn't I didn't pull the trigger. Petey had the gun. I'm just saying. People blame management, but we do the best we can. I mean, I-I do the best I can."

Later on that night, after checking and working on other patients, Sky is currently sitting at the desk in the ER filling out some pages in a chart when the sounds of gunshots and screaming is heard from outside surprising and scaring everybody that heard them
Bailey: "What was that? Were those gunshots?" she asks as herself, Sky, and a few other nurses run outside. When they get there they find three people on the ground including Brad as well as Burke
Sky: "Oh! Dr. Burke. I need some help!" she yells out while checking on Burke as Bailey checks on Brad before moving over to her
Chapter 26
Meredith: "Human beings need a lot of things to feel alive."
George: "Family."
Sky: "Love."
Izzie: "Sex."
Derek: "But we only need one thing."
Burke: "To actually be alive."
Cristina: "We need a beating heart."
Addison: "When our heart is threatened."
Alex: "We respond in one of two ways."
George: "We either run."
Burke: "Or."
Izzie: "We attack."
Richard: "There's a scientific term for this."
Alex: "Fight."
Sky: "Or flight."
Bailey: "It's instinct."
Meredith: "We can't control it."
Izzie: "Or can we?"

Cristina: "Dr. Rivers ! How bad is it? It looks bad. I'm here. I can help. If there's anything surgical, I can help."
Sky: "Why don't you go run Trauma 2, Dr. Yang?" she says surprising the woman
Cristina: "I get to run Trauma 2 all by myself?"
Sky: "Yes, but find me if you need help. And get consults."
Cristina: "I'm on it!" she says hurrying away as Sky makes sure she's in the room before meeting Richard as they bring Burke into the room
Richard: "How bad is it?"
Bailey: "Uh, GSW to the right shoulder. He's lost a lot of blood."
Sky: "Get him to Trauma 1 and keep the blinds closed. Yang's on the floor."

Richard: "Hey. Wait." he says as Burke tries to sit up
Burke: "I'm fine."
Sky: "Lay down. You lost a lot of blood."
Burke: "I'm fine. Let go. I'm fine! I have a patient that I have to go check on."
Bailey: "No, no. No, you are the patient. Lay down!" she says as they push him gently back onto the bed as he chuckles
Burke: "Dr. Bailey, when did you get here?"
Richard: "Page Shepherd."

Cristina: "You're shot?" she asks walking in the room looking at Burke with wide eyes
Burke: "Cristina?"
Richard: "Back to your station."
Cristina: "He's shot?"
Bailey: "Yang, we got it. It's ok."
Cristina: "That guy shot you." she scoffs while going back to the room she was in earlier

Sky: "Ok, no exit wound."
Derek: "Entry upper right shoulder. Could be lodged in the spine. Ok, let's roll him over."
Richard: "Easy."
Derek: "Watch the arm."
Richard: "Easy."
Derek: "Dr. Burke?"
Burke: "Hmm?"
Derek: "The bullet is in dangerous property. We need to check your hand function."
Richard: "Try and squeeze my fingers, ok?" he says as they watch as his hand stays still
Cristina: "They moved my guy upstairs. How is he?"
Bailey: "I need you to wait outside."
Cristina: "I'm not going to wait outside. Burke?"
Burke: "Can we have a moment?"
Richard: "Only a moment. I don't want to waste any time. Ok?" he says as they leave the couple alone

Derek: "His hands are cold." he says when they come back into the room to check on Burke
Burke: "My hands are always cold."
Richard: "Your hand is cold, Preston."
Burke: "I have cold hands."
Sky: "Bullet could be lodged in the brachial plexus." she says as a nurse brings them his xrays
Richard: "That's dangerous."
Derek: "Very dangerous. Could be pressing against the nerves."
Richard: "We'll have to do an angiogram..." he says as they continue to talk a little before the machines start to beep eractically before flatlining
Derek: "Oh, no. Trachea's deviated to the right!"
Sky: "Absent breath sounds on the right side!"
Richard: "Let's go!"
Derek: "14-gage angio." he says as a nurse hands him the tools he needs
Richard: "Let's hurry."
Derek: "Dr. Burke? You gotta stay with me now. There you go. That's it! There you go! You're all right. Right here. Right here. Your lung collapsed. You're ok. You're ok now." he says when Burke wakes up while coughing violently

After moving Burke into a private room on another floor, Sky goes back down to the ER and over to where Benjamin and Evan are waiting by a bed
Sky: "Alright Evan. You're good to go" she says making him sigh out in relief "You'll need to keep that brace on for atleast two weeks. Here is a presciption if you feel any pain."
Evan: "Thank you."
Sky: "You just need to sign the discharge forms at the nurses desk and then you'll be out of here." she says as he nods his head and stands up while grabbing his jacket
Benjamin: "I'll meet you over there" he says to Evan before following behind Sky "I knew doctors jobs were hectic but...I mean to see it for yourself is another thing."
Sky: "Yeah it is." she says giving him a breathy chuckle
Benjamin: "So you uh...never gave me an answer."
Sky: "Oh uh...I don't know..."
Benjamin: "I get it if you're not into me."
Sky: "Oh no...it's not that. It's just...I haven't been on a date in a long time and..."
Benjamin: Neither have I" he says as she gives him a small smile "Alright how about this. Today has been very...long. So how about I give you my number and you take all the time you need. Ok?" he says handing her a piece of paper as she smiles slightly at him
Sky: "Ok."
Benjamin: "Ok." he nods his head with a smile before turning to head over to his friend before they leave the hospital

Derek: "Hey you busy?"
Sky: "Not really. The last of the gunshot victims have been taken care of. Thankfully no more have been brought in. Why what's up?" she asks as he hands her some films "Are these Burke's?"
Derek: "Yeah."
Sky: "Is that a pseudoaneurysm?"
Derek: "Yep."
Sky: "Poor Burke. Are you going to operate?"
Derek: "Most likely." he says sighing out making her look up to see the look on his face
Sky: "You ok?"
Derek: "I'm not sure if I can operate without causing any damage. And I'm not sure if I want to take that risk."
Sky: "There's always a risk. What matters more is if you think not operating will cause more damage than operating." she says as he thinks for a moment
Derek: "If he wants me to go through with this. Do you mind scrubbing in with me? Could use your encouragement in there."
Sky: "Yeah of course. Just let me know." she says as he nods his head before walking away

Burke: "Shepherd?" he says laying on the operating table as they prepare to operate on him
Derek: "You don't have to thank me. I'm sure you'll return the favor one day."
Burke: "I was going to say, please try not to kill me." he says making everybody chuckle a little
Derek: "I'll do my best."
Burke: "Ok."

Derek: "Ok, retract that little bit right there. Ok, I am now removing the aneurysm from the nerve cluster." he says before the machines start to beep a little
Nurse: "NAPs are dropping."
Nurse 2: "Arterial pressure's down 50%."
Sky: "Did you cut the nerve root?"
Derek: "I don't see any discontinuity of the nerves. All right, let's do a reflex test on his hand. Chief."
Richard: "Ok. Nothing." he says pressing the tool down on his arm
Derek: "Damn it. Try it again."
Richard: "Uh-uh." he says pressing the tool down on his arm once again
Derek: "This doesn't make sense. I'd know if I severed a nerve."
Richard: "Derek, is the arm paralyzed?"
Derek: "I have to do a wake-up test."
Sky: "Derek."
Derek: "There's only one person who can help me figure out whether or not I've damaged the relay or not, and that's Burke."
Richard: "He's been through a lot of trauma today."
Derek: "I'm trying to prevent the trauma he's going to feel if I have to tell him he's paralyzed."

Derek: "Ok. How are we doing?" he asks once Cristina arrives into the room with Richard
Man: "He's at the edge of consciousness. Very light. He should be up soon."
Derek: "Ok. Yang? You're up."
Cristina: "Oh what? I'm sorry. What do you need me to do?"
Derek: "When he comes to, he's going to be disoriented and he'll probably fight the intubation. We can't numb the arm because we need him to move his fingers. He will be in a lot of pain. We need you to keep him focused, ok?"
Cristina: "Ok. Yeah."
Derek: "Ok, let's, let's wake him up."
Cristina: "Burke?" she whispers bending down near his ear "Burke, it's Cristina. I'm sorry. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Burke. Baby, wake up. Do it for me. Open your eyes" she says as his eyes start to open slowly "Hi. Hi." she breathes out in relief a little before he starts thrashing around making her jump back as the others move to stop him from moving too much
Derek: "Get ready. Get ready. Hold him down. Calm him down."
Richard: "Yang! Cristina, get in there."
Sky: "Get in his face. Talk to him, Cristina."
Richard: "Yang!"
Derek: "Get in there! Hold him down! Hold him down! Calm him down! Cristina!" he yells out as they hold Burke down and she turns to face away from the table
Derek: "Cristina! Hold him down, Chief. Hold his arm. Preston? Preston, look at me! Look at me! Right here. Listen, listen. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Listen, there was a complication. We can fix it. We need you to move your fingers on your right side. Can you do that? Come on, you can do this" he says as Burke shakes his head no while grunting in pain as tears stream down his face "Look at me. On your right hand. Ok? I know. I know. It's just you and me. We can do this. Ok. Come on. Focus. Focus. Now you're going to move your fingers on your right hand. Come on, Preston. You can do it. Move your fingers. Move your fingers. Come on. Come on. Come on, come on, come on, come on."
Chapter 27
Derek: "Come on, come on, come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Good. You're doing good, Dr. Burke" he says once his fingers start to move a little "Ok, I need you to touch each finger of your right hand to your thumb. One. Two. You're doing great. Keep going. Three. Good."
Richard: "One more."
Derek: "That's good." he says as Cristina walks out the room as they continue on with Burke's surgery

Richard: "You have a dress for the prom?" Sky hears as she walks over to where Bailey was walking away from Richard
Bailey: "Excuse me?"
Richard: "I'm going to the prom. If I have to go, everybody has to go."
Bailey: "What? I'm a grown woman." she says as Richard turns to look over at Sky who shrugs her shoulders
Sky: "Yeah no offense but I already did the whole prom thing. Wasn't exactly my thing."
Richard: "Everybody goes to the prom! Everybody!" he yells out to the people around them as he walks away from the two women who stare after his figure

George: "Not to bother you, but-" he says gently says to Bailey as she turns to face him annoyed
Bailey: "What? One of you better spit out the problem right now!"
Alex: "The problem is the colors and the balloons and the "Under the Sea." "No, it's Titanic." "Let's go with Tears in Heaven." "No, too morbid." "It should be pink." "It should be red." "It should be a rainbow!" he exclaims making Sky chuckle to herself a little
George: "What he's saying is that we're very hopeful that you speak teenage girl."

A while later Sky is sitting in the attendings lounge eating her food and looking through some charts when Derek comes in the room
Derek: "Hey."
Sky: "Hey. So you excited for prom?" she asks sarcastically with a slight chuckle as he groans out
Derek: "Uh do we have to go to this?"
Sky: "According to Richard's loud announcement we do." she says as he moves to sit next to her and looks on the table to see the paper with Benjamin's number on it
Derek: "Benjamin? Is that the bakery lawyer guy?"
Sky: "Yep. His friend was at the restaurant when the shooting happened so he came to support him."
Derek: "Huh. So did you decide if you were gonna go out with him?"
Sky: "He told me to think about it. So...I am thinking about it."
Derek: "You could always invite him to prom. Use that as a test run."
Sky: "Yeah I'd rather not have our first date be so...formal."
Derek: "Your choice. But if you ask my opinion I think you should give this a shot."
Sky: "Good thing I didn't ask your opinion."
Derek: "It's time for you to get back out there. You deserve it." he says kissing her on the head before taking a few chips from her bag and walking out the room
Derek: "Don't tell me you spiked the punch already." he says coming over to where Sky is standing by the punch bowl
Sky: "Oh I wish."
Derek: "You look nice."
Sky: "Thank you. God I hate these things." she groans out in annoyance
Derek: "Yeah I remember. Mark and I had to drag you out to any of the school dances and the whole time you would sit in the bleachers and watch everybody."
Sky: "And then you and Mark would come over and literally carry me onto the dance floor and wouldn't let me leave until I danced for 3 songs each with the both of you."
Derek: "Yes we did." he says as they both chuckle
Finn: "Hey."
Derek: "Hey."
Finn: "You seen Meredith?"
Derek: "I don't think she's here yet." he says as he looks up to see Meredith coming down the stairs and when Finn sees her he walks over to her as Derek continues to watch her
Addison: "This whole thing brings back very traumatic memories of being a band geek with braces and the lisp. Spending the whole evening with Skippy Gold talking about Star Wars" he says making the two slightly smile and laugh at her "So, you want to, um, dance?"
Derek: "Love to." he says grabbing her hand and moving over to the dance floor as Sky pours herself some more punch and walks off as everybody continues dancing

Sky: "For the one who said that everybody had to go to the prom, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be hiding in the OR gallery." she says finding Richard in the room and goes to sit next to him
Richard: "Did my internship here. My residency. Came back here the minute my fellowship was done. The day they told me I would be Chief, I was standing right there in that OR when I got the news. Spent my whole career in this hospital. My whole life."
Bailey: "Chief" she says coming into the room and making both doctors look over at her as she sighs sadly and sits next to them "Sir, Denny Duquette died at 7:42 this evening."
Richard: "Damn it."

Richard: "Shepherd."
Derek: "Yes."
Richard: "Uh, have you seen Bailey's interns? Grey? Yang? I'm looking for Izzie Stevens in particular."
Derek: "No. No."
Sky: "Chief." she says as they see Izzie and the others except for Meredith walking over to them sadly. As they walk past, Derek turns his head to look away from them, making Sky and Addison give him a suspicious look
Izzie: "It was me" she says stopping to face Richard "I cut his LVAD wire. I did it. No one helped me. And now...I thought I was a surgeon, but I can't. I thought I was a surgeon, but I am not. So I quit."
Bailey: "Izzie." she calls out to her when she walks away with Alex and George following behind her
Addison: "I guess that puts an end to the evening."
Derek: "Yeah."
Richard: "Yeah, I guess it does." he says as he walks away with Sky, Addison, and Bailey following
