We're driving off into the sunset, on our way to the desert for our last date before his winter break's over. Until he's gone most of the time and this becomes a sort of a long-distance relationship. I'm scared to spend our first anniversary alone since it's during the Australian Grand Prix. So we decided to spend it sometime earlier, in my jeep, the day before he leaves.
"Next year we'll going skiing." Max smiles to me, he knows I'm so not built for the cold. He traces my inner thigh with his fingers lovingly.
"I'll freeze. But if you want, I will."
"You're always cold."
"I can't help it."
"We're here. Let's unload."
"Unload?"
"Yeah, dinner on the back of the jeep."
"But the sun's going down."
"Yes, come on now." We step out of my car and I see the things he packed in. Many pillows and a full basket of foods, healthy food. We're eating and having a great talk until I feel it getting colder now the sun's completely under. I'm shivering and pulling a pillow close for warmth.
"I'm cold."
"And?"
"And you're an asshole." I step out of the back and into the car. He opens his door and chuckles.
"Babe, come back. I didn't mean it like that."
"I am cold. I am not going out again."
"Baby, it's our last night."
"I don't care. You always do this. Last time, Charles gave me his jacket while he was walking behind me and you were next to me. He saw me shivering and did something about it!"
"Don't start this again."
"Don't you get it? Your Dutch side can be such an asshole sometimes, and it really hurts."
"Look I can't help it, you want someone who goes far out of their way to be a gentleman, I'm not like that."
"But you could at least try!" I shout to him, I see him flinch but I don't care, he hurts me. I look away, I can't stand it.
"I do try!" I hear his voice crack, but I don't look back to him.
"I don't see it."
"Because you only like the over the top drama trying! I'm not prince charming on a white horse!" He shouts after me, all his guards have fallen down. Full emotion speaks loudly, something he never does. I look at him, he's making many gestures with his hands. Well, actually he's just wildly throwing them in the air. I've gone too far with this fight, it's our last night anyway. Is he scared I'll break up with him not? Because the season starts again? He knows I don't like being alone for so long and many times, because of this we've been on the edge too many times before. Is he going to break up with me? Because he thinks I will? And he wants to make his heartbreak easier by making himself believe it was he who made the choice? "Look, I think it's best-"
"But-" I cut him off before he can say anything we'll both regret. "-you are my prince Redbull in a metal horse."
"I love you." He whispers loud enough for me to hear and steps into the car.
"Let's go home?"
"Yes, please. Want to watch The Lion King again?"
"Please, with tea." I dream away by the idea of the warmth of the tea and his cuddles.
"Anything you want."
