Once upon a time, there was an affluent woman who was mutually in love with a poor man. The couple strove hard to make possible their romance despite the many oppositions surrounding them. The couple ended up being married, bearing a child, and living a very simple life. However, after three years in marriage, the woman left her husband and child because she pitied herself of not having the luxury she used to have.

Humans as we are, we are tempted to take back what we have sacrificed. Many people  hit the gym and lose many calories for a month or so, only to give in easily to the unhealthy diet they formerly resist. Many people invest in businesses and do it enthusiastically until they meet difficulties and easily give up on it.

In today's gospel (Luke 17: 29-37), we are reminded not to go back to the bad former ways we are so accustomed to. Jesus mentioned the story of the wife of Lot who turned into salt because she glanced back at the place where, in the first place, they should flee from. In our own context, we are challenged to be firm in spirit to linger on our progress no matter how small it may be. After all, the little improvement in our spiritual life will always be greater than the darkest ways we did in the past. Amen.
