Chapter 22.

I wasn’t surrounded by conversation like usual when the blackness lifted, I was just greeted with silence. I could feel my body this time, I wasn’t numb anymore, I could think better too. I pushed through and a few seconds later I could open my eyes, I looked up at the tall ceiling and took a deep breath to fill my lungs.

“SKY!” That was George, I could hear him behind me, I sat up in confusion and turned to see him tied to a chair, my face crumpled in confusion.

“George… what are you doing here?” I questioned but then my mind played over the events, instead of answering he let me go over everything. David had been on the phone with Nathan, I asked who I was and he didn’t tell me, I left, I drove the whole night, it became too much I pulled over to cry, I called George, I realized I was at the bottom of David and Nathan’s drive, I knocked on the door, Nathan answered in his boxers, Pearl appeared behind him in her underwear, George appeared, I fainted into Pearl’s arms… then the conversations, George had sniffed me out… David had came back. “Mutt?” I questioned realizing all the ‘dog’ jokes had been aimed at George.

“We need to talk…” George paled.

“Your best friend is a werewolf.” Nathan’s cold voice spoke from behind me I turned to see him stood in the door way. Werewolf. I looked back to George he was shooting a glare towards Nathan then he looked at me and shrugged.

“You can’t tell me you’d accept them monsters and not me.” He spoke warily, but my lack of shock made me realize that nothing had changed, he was still George.

“I wasn’t going to tell you that, don’t assume.” I stood up, my head span and before I could fall to the floor Nathan had caught me and was already steadying me. “Thanks.”

“It’s ok. David’s upstairs, he thinks you’re still mad at him so he didn’t want to come down. However, I can hear him pacing upstairs.” Nathan rolled his eyes.

“I guess I’ll go see him then.” I made my way for the stairs. “Oh and Nathan?”

            “Yes Sky?”

“Let George go.” I sighed and made my way to David’s room, I didn’t knock because I knew he was expecting me I just walked in.

            “Sky…” David’s voice was apprehensive.

“I’m fine thanks for asking.” I sat down cross legged on his bed, on his silk red sheets, I remembered our first night we spent together on them. Then I’d read the book and found out about Pearl. “Where’s Pearl?”

“Asleep probably.” He shrugged I couldn’t help but hear the anger in his voice and feel it when he spoke about her.

“I need to know who I am.” I told him straight up coldly.

“You’re Sky.” He sat down beside me and put his arm around my shoulder, I shrugged it off. “You’re the most powerful PURE witch alive. As powerful as Pearl was when she was just pure witch.” I don’t see why he just couldn’t tell me this in the first place. He’s ridiculous.

            “Is that it?”

“Yes. Also, the reason I haven’t needed to feed as often as usual is because your blood is insanely powerful. That’s why Nathan didn’t kill you when he kept you. He was using you for power. I didn’t want you to know, well, actually, I didn’t want anyone else to know. If people saw you, vampires, they’d take you the first opportunity they got, it’s clear you’re related to Pearl.”

“Why were you arguing with Pearl? Why do you hate her so much?” I asked as I climbed into his lap to rest my head against his chest, I hate arguing with him and it’s not as if what he’s just told me was a reason to fall out, he’s stupid for not telling me.

            “She left me.”

“People come and people go David, in case you haven’t noticed everyone thinks I killed my best friend, when in fact I watched you kill her. I have you and George, that’s it.”

            “She used me Sky!”

“I know.” I sighed, I didn’t want to cause another argument so I kissed his jawline lightly. “And I’m sorry she did that to you.”

“Can I talk to you-” Pearl was stood in the doorway of David’s room causing us both to look up at her voice.

“No.” David cut her off before she could finish, she rolled her eyes then focused on me.

“Not you dumbass, her.” Though her face wasn’t displaying much emotion I could see something, worry? Care? I don’t know. She looked extremely uncomfortable too. She had something to say but didn’t know how.

            “No-” David began.

“You don’t control me.” I snapped at him as I got up and made my way to Pearl. She smirked awkwardly and held out her hand to me, I took is suspiciously.

“I don’t bite.” She winked and couldn’t help but let a small giggle escape my lips at the ironic joke.

“If you do anything-” David started with a threatening tone.

“To hurt her you’ll kill me. Yes, yes I know.” Pearl waved her free hand at him before pulling me in downstairs. “Take a walk with me? You see they can hear in here…” She motioned towards the door I gave a sharp nod and let her pull me outside with my hand still firmly in hers though once we were outside she let go. It was sunset outside, the sky a beautiful orange a breeze brushed over me but I wasn’t overly fussed by it. We walked a while in silence, getting a suitable distance from the house I assumed. “He loves you.” She broke the silence first. I sighed and ran my hand over a flower petal, the garden was large and had some beautiful flowers growing on the edge. This flower was purple, the petal like silk against my fingertips.

            “I know.”

“I used to think him and I were in love at one point you know.” She laughed half-heartedly. I couldn’t help but notice how sad this woman was, she wasn’t a ‘bitch’, or had she just let her guard down? “But then as you may have heard the power went to my head. He really was my best friend though. But I went in the wrong direction, down the wrong path, I knew what was best for him, and he may not believe it, but I left for his benefit. I didn’t want him becoming like me. So I just left. It worked, he’s turned out fine, which is nice to see. I should have seen that changing me into a hybrid would turn out badly but I was young and reckless, I wanted everything and if I didn’t get it the people who stood in my way sure as hell better look out!” She shrugged.

            “You hurt him by leaving.”

“I know, I regret it, but at the time it was what was right.” She admitted, I nodded understanding her.

“How do you become a vampire?”

“Inject vampire blood into the heart. It will stop the heart instantly and you die for a few hours then when you come back, if you survive, you will be a vampire.”

“Not that violent as I thought…” I spoke aloud, I’d expected the vampire to viciously have to murder his victim or something but really it was just an injection.

“Well… some vampires just rip open the person’s chest and put some of their blood in there so it can be violent. Also it’s a painful death.” Her eyes glazed over, probably remembering hers. David did that to her. “Anyway,” She shook herself. “I want to change Sky… I want to stay here.”

            “Why?”

“I have my reasons.” She straightened her back and her guard was back up.

“S’not my house.” I sighed, I was tired despite the only thing I’ve done over the past however many days is sleep.

            “I know.”

“I’m sure they will let you stay.” I shrugged.

“I hope so.” The guard was down for a second but then she returned to an emotionless stance. “I just wanted to let you know that I don’t mean any harm towards you and I wanted you to… well… not hate me. I needed to explain.”

“I don’t hate you. It’s fine.” My head got suddenly dizzy, I put my hand to my head and rubbed my temples.

            “Are you ok?”

            “I don’t know.” I admitted honestly.

“You should rest.” She looked at me as if she knew what was wrong with me but I ignored it and followed her back to the house.

“Sky?” Nathan’s tone was worried as he was beside me as soon as I walked in the door.

“Yes?” I questioned feeling completely drained, my eyes were already shutting. Nathan put and arm around me to hold me up. I blew out a breath.

“You’re so pale… you look as if you’re losing blood but you’re not bleeding.”

“Just tired s’all.” I was struggling to keep my eyes open so that must be it.

“Get off her.” David growled demanding the attention of the whole room; Nathan, Pearl, George and I. Nathan removed his arm to hold up his hands but as he did my legs went and I collapsed, well nearly, Pearl had caught me in time – again. It didn’t take long however for David to pick me up and push Pearl away. I slapped his chest with all the energy I could manage.

            “Don’t be rude.” I scolded.

“Yes. Treat your women with respect.” Pearl glared at David in annoyance. David’s chest vibrated as another growl emanated from him. I shut my eyes unable to keep them open.

“I think we should take her to the hospital.” George spoke like a concerned brother.

            “I’m fine.” I mumbled unconvincingly.

            “But-” George protested.

“Shut up mutt, she doesn’t want to go. We should leave her to rest.”

“Don’t call me a mutt!” George was getting increasingly angry.

“Shhh… no fighting.” I sighed heavily. “Bed.” I commanded.

“Ok.” David took us upstairs and in an instant I was being laid beneath his silk sheets. I wrapped them around me already ready to fall asleep. “You will be the death of me.” The bed dipped as David climbed in beside me pulling me into his body, I welcomed the coolness of his body.

“Hmm… you shouldn’t be so harsh on Pearl.” I muttered on the edge of sleep. He was about to say something but I cut him off quickly. “Shhh, sleep.” I told him. He resigned to my command and settled down his breathing steadying out quickly. Then sleep took me.
