Shades of orange and nostalgia pour into the car
As the bright sun fatefully kisses the horizon once more
The last vestiges of light fade from the pensive sky
As darkness settles over your rusty white Hyundai
So this is it then, you say in a defeated voice
Staring ahead through the dirty windscreen
Your knuckles turning white on the steering wheel
Both of us still strapped to our seats in the automobile
We have been here before. Same parking lot
Same excuses about careless decisions.
Same miserable faces. Same sunset leaving us cold
Talking until we reach the familiar threshold
You said that last time. Promised to improve. Silence.
Admiring the insignificant daily occurrence of sunset
When its predictable routine takes only 24-hours to reset
And leaves us facing a new day filled with old routine
When sunlight turns to darkness, stars should emerge.
Yet the empty sky remains quiet; no bustling of light
I cannot stay, yet my seatbelt remains buckled
Tomorrow we will sit here again, admiring the sight
One day I will gain the courage to leave. To seek
Out a sunset that does not dissolve into darkness
But continues to shine, long after the light fades.
No more parking-lots. No more routine fights.
