Everyone expected it.
Sean and Kaycee, best friends and dance partners since she was fifteen and he was sixteen. The chemistry and connection were so evident that everyone thought they would end up together, but to their surprise, they didn't.
Not because they weren't in love, but because it took Sean too long to realize his feelings and, when he did, there was already someone else in her life.
Kaycee got a boyfriend — she wasn't really in love with him, because she loved her best friend, but after years of waiting she started to believe that he would never feel the same for her, so she decided to move on.
The boyfriend was very different from her but he was also kind and seemed to really like her, so she learned to like him too, she may be even have loved him at some point — and they dated for two years without much problem, but then that weekend happened.
She had flown with Sean to Australia for a dance workshop. On the first night of their stay, they ended up drinking a little too much. When she woke up that morning, she realized that not only was she in Sean's hotel room but that his arms were wrapped around her naked body while he was sleeping peacefully.
She didn't know how to feel about it. When he woke up, they almost fought over what happened. Except that he then admitted to having been in love with her for a long time — and she ended up admitting the same.
They went the rest of the week loving each other in a new way, but still in the friendship zone because they didn't want for their relationship to start as cheating — so they decided to only do things once they were back in LA and she had broken up with her boyfriend.
Well, that was what they planned, but it wasn't what life had in stored for them.
[a year and five months before the epilogue]
Kaycee got home that afternoon, after the longest flight of her life, she was nervous about everything that was about to change but she was also excited to be finally putting her life on track, the way she always wanted and expected it to be.
The week having Sean by her side, knowing that he loved her just as much as she loved him, was the best she ever had — even with them still acting as only dance partners and best friends. So in the cab back to the apartment she shared with her best friend, she kept thinking about how she was going to end everything with her boyfriend as soon as she walked through the door 'cause she hoped he would be there to see her.
Only that she walked into an empty apartment. It was the middle of the day, so Tahani was working, but she had left a note on the fridge saying that Gabe had left a message on the answering machine.
Kaycee walked over to the machine and pressed play. Before the message played, she walked to the room to put her luggage down and then went back to the kitchen for some apple juice that she's been craving.
A message from her boyfriend started: "Kaycee, I tried to talk with you but I think your phone was out because of the airplane. I'm about to get on a plane too, Will needed me to cover him in the New York master workshop. I was dying to see you but I'll be back in two weeks. Hope your flight was good. I'll call you when I land, alright? love you, babe." — beep.
The apple juice she wanted so much left her nauseated as she realized she would have to wait two more weeks to finally end everything with Gabe, two more weeks till she could be with Sean with nothing holding her back.
She kept herself busy as much as she could during the two weeks, scheduling as many classes and choreographies as possible. Despite her exhaustion, she needed the distraction so that she wouldn't go crazy counting the seconds to Friday — when Gabe would be back.
"Hey, hey, hey..." Sean's voice broke the sound of the music in the studio, she had been stuck on it the whole day rehearsing the choreo for the next class she had to give. "How about giving yourself a break?"
He asked as he turned the music off on her computer, tossed his gym bag in a corner, and walked over to her offering a Gatorade. "What's this for?"
"Bailey told me that you threw up this morning, it's to get your electrolytes back." She took the drink from his hand, making a weird face when smelling it. "You're gonna get yourself sick, you've been working too much these past three weeks, counting Australia."
He tugged one of her curls behind her ear, she closed her eyes at the simple touch — they've been avoiding being much with each other during these weeks, so they wouldn't cross any more limits. "I'm just nervous about today, that's all." She explained, closing the Gatorade without even taking a sip.
"What time are you meeting him?" He asked.
"He gets here around half past six so he's probably gonna pass by the apartment around eight." She answered as he took the Gatorade from her hand, opening it and giving it back to her. "So it's gonna be soon."
"Drink it." He said.
"Sean, I'm fine really." She closed the drink once more, giving it back to him as she walked to get her computer and her bag. "I only threw up from nervousness, I'm not sick."
He looked at her with soft eyes, she melted inside every time he looked at her like that. "Are you sure?"
"Yes, and don't look at me like that." She said once her backpack was on her back.
"Like what?" He asked mischievously as he walked towards her.
She laughed and giggled, walking backward until her back found the wall. "Sean, don't."
"Don't what?" He said as his hands found her waist. "Don't get close to you? It's this too close?"
Her gaze went from his eyes to his lips, as he touched their foreheads before whispering: "I'm so tired of waiting, I wanna touch you, and kiss you."
She touched his face making their eyes meet. "Just a few more hours and tomorrow I'm all yours, okay?"
He sighed while nodding, leaving a kiss on her forehead despite his wishes for more and backing away. "Come on, I'll drive you home."
The whole way to her house she tried to hide from Sean how sick she was feeling 'cause she didn't want to worry him, but the first thing she did once walking inside the apartment was to rush to the first sink she found — the kitchen sink — where she threw up everything she had and she hadn't eaten all day.
"What happens- oh that's disgusting." Said Tahani, covering her nose as she walked in the kitchen, worried because of the noises she heard. "Couldn't get to the bathroom?"
Kaycee just denied as she let the water run through the sink, answering with a weak voice: "Sorry. "
"It's alright, but what happened?" The other asked, getting some water from the fridge for Kaycee.
"I think I got the flu or something." She said as they sat at their small table. "I was feeling kind of tired when in Australia but it got worse ever since I came back, and I've been feeling sick, and just by thinking in the food I get nauseated."
"If I didn't know you I would say you are pregnant." She joked laughing, but Kaycee didn't laugh.
As Tahani's laugh died, they stared at each other for a few seconds thinking about why Kaycee wasn't laughing. "Oh my god."
Kaycee mimicked her friend's move as her hand covered her mouth, both in shock. "I can't believe this." She said.
"Is there any chance?" Tahani asked.
"I don't know... I mean, Gabe and I, we don't use condoms anymore but I take the pill religiously like I never forget." She said and for a minute she thought about her night with Sean but she remembered seeing a condom in the trash can, the next morning.
"What about that shot you took a few days before the trip because of your sore throat, it was an antibiotic right?" Tahani pointed out. "Antibiotics cuts the effect of the contraceptive pill."
"Oh my God!" Kaycee said, covering her face with her hands. "I can't be pregnant, not now."
"Wait a minute..." The girl ran to the bathroom and came back holding a stick to Kaycee.
"What's this?" She asked, her mind going dizzy with the possibility.
"It's a pregnancy test, I got one to do that prank on Kobe but never got to use it." She explained as she grabbed a glass. "Pee in the glass, soak the thing in it, and then wait for the result."
Kaycee held both things in her shaky hands, her brain wasn't really working for a second. "Hey," Tahani called her, sweetly. "you got this, one step at a time, just go to the bathroom, pee on the stick and we go from there, okay?"
She sighed and nodded before standing up to go to the bathroom, once there, she read the instructions for the pregnancy test. She peed in the cup and let the test soak in it for a few seconds, before taking it out and leaving it on the bathroom sink counter as she sat on the lid of the toilet seat.
Her hands ran through her hair in an attempt to calm herself down as she stared at the blank wall in front of her. She just couldn't believe what she was doing, she was actually taking a pregnancy test. Kaycee had always dreamed of being a mother and having her own family since the family had always been the most important thing on the planet for her. This dream wasn't something that was far away from her mind since she had always pictured herself starting her family when being around 25-26 years old. But she had never imagined that she would be starting that family with a man that she didn't love at all.
After waiting the five minutes the instructions asked, she finally decided to take a look to see what the test said: positive.
She left the bathroom a bit in shock and with tears in her eyes, shouting and running through the apartment to find her best friend, who she believed to be in the leaving room."It's positive, T. I'm really pregnant-"
Her words died as she walked into the living room, finding her boyfriend there with her best friend. He asked with a shaky voice: "You're what?"
