We make such messes in this life, both accidentally and on purpose. But wiping the surface clean doesn't really make anything neater. It just masks what is below. It's only when you really dig down deep, go underground, that you can see who you really are.

He didn't say anything, just stared.
I turned away, squeezing my eyes shut to stop the tears.
He would only ever see my bruises, my burns.
He wouldn't see whats underneath.
No one would, and it hurt so bad.
It hurt more than scalding water over bare skin.
It hurt more than heavy fists on bones.
"Olivia, do you really want to know what I think?" His voice was soft and gentle.
I nodded slowly.
"You may not like it."
"I don't like much anymore." I said.
"I think you look beautiful and I wish you could see that for yourself." He said. "I think you are the most amazing and resilient person I have ever met. I think that I love you and I want to spend all my time with you."
Unwillingly, all I said was, "Oh."
