The harsh rap of knuckles against the cedar door jolted me from uneasy slumber, the sound reverberating through the room like a foreboding echo of impending doom. Clutching the satin sheets to my chest, I braced myself for whatever new twist of fate awaited on the other side.

"Come in," I called out, my voice tinged with cautious uncertainty.

The soft clinking of multiple locks being disengaged punctuated the tense silence, each metallic click resonating with a weighty significance that sent a chill down my spine. With a slow, almost ominous creak, the door swung open, revealing Rubio standing on the threshold, a tray of food balanced precariously in his hands.

With a measured stride, he approached the bedside, the click of his boots against the stone floor echoing in the otherwise still room. Setting the tray down on the end table with a definitive thud, he fixed me with a stern gaze that brooked no argument.

"Make sure you eat all of it," he commanded, his voice betraying no hint of warmth. "It will be good for the babies."

I couldn't help but offer a feeble attempt at humor to alleviate the tension that hung heavy in the air. "Breakfast in bed? This is starting to feel more like a Bed and Breakfast than a prison cell."

Rubio's response was a roll of his eyes, a sigh escaping his lips as he regarded me with thinly veiled exasperation. "The Elders cannot punish you while pregnant," he explained, his tone clipped and matter-of-fact. "It would be deemed unethical to risk the life of the twins by throwing you in with the other criminals. Trust me, they would most likely attack a pretty woman like you within minutes."

The implication of his words sent a chill racing down my spine, the realization of the dangers lurking within the confines of the palace walls settling like a lead weight in the pit of my stomach.

"Why treat me so well?" I couldn't help but question, a note of incredulity seeping into my voice. "Placing me in such luxurious surroundings and delivering me food seems like excessive treatment for someone accused of attempting regicide. Surely, you don't extend such hospitality to every pregnant wolf in your custody."

Rubio's grin was infuriatingly smug as he regarded me with a knowing glint in his eye. "Well, aren't you an introspective one," he remarked, his tone laced with thinly veiled amusement.

"I'm just curious—"

"They say curiosity killed the cat," Rubio looked in my eyes and continued, "sometimes things are better left unsaid, Adaline."

As Rubio's words hung in the air, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled over me like a suffocating blanket. His casual demeanor belied the gravity of my situation, and I couldn't help but wonder what ulterior motives lay beneath his seemingly friendly facade.

I forced a tight-lipped smile, masking the turmoil churning within me. "I suppose I've always been a curious creature."

Rubio's gaze lingered on me for a moment too long, his brown eyes piercing through the facade I struggled to maintain. "Indeed," he murmured, the hint of a knowing smile playing at the corners of his lips. He nodded at me in acknowledgment, before slipping out of the door.

Rubio's departure left me with a palpable sense of solitude, the weight of my predicament settling heavily upon my shoulders as I found myself alone once more. The rhythmic melody of the locks clicking into place served as a grim reminder of the confinement that bound me within these stone walls.

Turning my attention to the modest meal laid out before me, I couldn't help but note the discrepancy between the opulence of my surroundings and the simplicity of the fare provided. Scrambled eggs, toast, and a handful of grapes hardly seemed fitting for a prisoner awaiting trial for treason, yet it was a far cry from the meager rations one might expect in a dungeon cell. Seems a little low-brow for the Elders, I thought, but too high-brow for a prisoner.

Taking a hesitant bite of the toast, I mulled over the daunting task that lay before me. How was I to prove my innocence when all evidence seemed stacked against me? The very thought of facing the High Elders in their imposing courtroom filled me with a sense of dread that threatened to consume me whole.

Maiya's voice echoed in the recesses of my mind, a reminder of the dire circumstances that had led us to this point. How do you plan on doing that? She queried, her tone tinged with uncertainty. We're trapped in this room, Adaline.

I pondered her words, a flicker of determination igniting within me despite the overwhelming odds stacked against us. "I'm not sure yet," I admitted outwardly, my voice tinged with a note of resignation. "But there has to be some way to prove my innocence."

As I contemplated our next course of action, Maiya's revelation about Aric's communication with Nikolai sent a surge of mixed emotions coursing through me. The realization that my mate had exiled us from Riverwood Pack was a bitter pill to swallow, a stark betrayal that cut to the very core of my being.

Exiled? I repeated, disbelief coloring my words as I grappled with the implications of Nikolai's actions.

Maiya confirmed my worst fears, her voice tinged with sorrow as she recounted Aric's words. Yes, exiled. Aric says it was Nikolai who ordained it. He believes Nikolai's current thoughts are clouded by anger and betrayal.

The revelation sent a pang of anguish coursing through me, a stark reminder of the chasm that now lay between us. Did you tell him about the pups?  I questioned, my heart pounding in my chest as I awaited her response.

Maiya's answer was swift and decisive. No, I didn't. Aric made his choice, and we don't need to complicate things further.

As I sat there, contemplating the daunting task ahead, a sense of determination washed over me like a wave crashing against the shore. I refused to accept defeat, to resign myself to a fate that I knew in my heart was undeserved. With each passing moment, the weight of my circumstances bore down upon me, a heavy burden that threatened to crush my spirit. Trapped within these unforgiving stone walls, exiled from the pack that had once been my home, and facing a death sentence for a crime I knew I hadn't committed, the road ahead seemed treacherous and fraught with peril.

Yet, despite the overwhelming odds stacked against me, a flicker of defiance burned brightly within me, a spark of resilience that refused to be extinguished. I vowed to fight tooth and nail for the chance to prove my innocence, to claw my way back from the brink of oblivion and reclaim the life that had been unjustly stolen from me.

With a determined resolve, I rose from the bed and began to pace the room, my mind racing with a thousand thoughts and possibilities. As I mulled over potential strategies and plans of action, I found myself drawn to the fireplace, its carved wooden figures staring back at me with impassive expressions.

"Is this a test?" I whispered to the silent figures, my voice echoing off the cold stone walls. "If it is, I refuse to surrender."

But the carved faces offered no answers, no solace in my moment of need. Disheartened, I turned away from the fireplace and let my gaze wander idly around the room, until it came to rest upon a small deformity in the stone wall.

Curiosity piqued, I approached the wall and examined the raised section with keen interest. There, nestled in the corner of the room, was a small, almost imperceptible door, its presence hidden from casual view. My heart quickened with excitement as I realized the potential significance of this discovery.

With trembling fingers, I reached out and brushed against the smooth surface of the geode that adorned the wall. Its otherworldly glow captivated me, drawing me in with an irresistible allure. And then, with a hesitant touch, I pressed against the stone, feeling it give way beneath my fingertips.

As the hidden door creaked open, revealing a darkened chamber beyond, a rush of anticipation flooded through me. I wonder what could be inside, I thought. Rubio's voice rung out in my mind, "curiosity killed the cat."

I rolled my eyes. This cat is going to die anyway.

As I crawled further into the darkness of the hidden chamber, the faint beams of sunlight filtering in through the open door illuminated the space just enough for me to make out my surroundings. It was a cramped space, barely taller than I was, with cardboard boxes stacked along one wall. The musty scent of mildew hung heavy in the air, mingling with the earthy smell of old paper.

I reached out and gingerly opened one of the boxes, revealing a treasure trove of books nestled within. From towering tomes to slender volumes, the box contained a diverse collection of literary works, each one whispering tales of adventure and intrigue. My heart quickened with excitement as I scanned the titles, my fingers tracing over the worn spines.

With a smile, I plucked an old red book from the box, its cover faded and worn with age. In delicate gold calligraphy, the title read "Laws of the High Elders." My pulse quickened as I flipped open the book, eager to uncover its secrets.

Skimming through the table of contents, I soon found what I was looking for: a section on "High Crimes and Due Punishment." Clutching the book to my chest, I made a mental note to delve deeper into its pages at the first opportunity.

But as I emerged from the hidden chamber and back into the light of the main room, I realized that I was not alone. Dust and cobwebs clung to my clothes, evidence of my clandestine exploration. Hastily, I set the book aside and made my way to the bathroom, intent on washing away any trace of my adventure.

As I scrubbed away the grime, my thoughts raced, my mind consumed by the possibilities contained within the ancient tome. With each turn of the page, I felt a surge of excitement, a glimmer of hope that perhaps there was a way to prove my innocence after all.

Dressed once more and with the book hidden safely beneath the covers of my bed, I eagerly began to read, the pages crackling with each turn. The text was dense and archaic, yet I found myself drawn in, captivated by the secrets it held.

But my reverie was interrupted by a knock at the door, followed by the sound of locks being undone. With a start, I hastily concealed the book as Rubio entered the room, bearing yet another tray of food.

"You were just here with food," I remarked, taken aback by his unexpected return.

"That was three and a half hours ago," he replied with a laugh, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

As Rubio set the tray down, his brow furrowed in confusion at my sudden silence. I offered him a light smile, but his expression remained unconvinced. With a sharp turn, he made to leave the room, shooting me one last suspicious glance before locking the door behind him.

As the sound of his footsteps faded away, I let out a shaky breath, my heart still pounding in my chest. Slowly, I slipped my hand beneath the covers, fingers searching for the hidden book. My pulse quickened at the thought of being caught with potential contraband, knowing that this time they would have concrete evidence against me.

Finally, my hand closed around the book, its familiar weight a comforting presence against my trembling fingers. With a sense of trepidation, I pulled it out from its hiding place and carefully opened its weathered pages.

My mind raced further. How much longer could I keep this book hidden from the prying eyes of the High Elders? And more importantly, would the secrets contained within this book be enough to save me from my determined fate?
