Chapter 2: Next move.
Carson heard a woman scream from down the hall. He rolled his eyes; he figured it was some old guy bringing his mistress here to this sleazy motel to fulfill one of his nasty perverted fantasies. He continued down the hall until he got to the door, it was left open. It all hit him at once; the scream wasn't from some sick sex fantasy. It was from Riley. He dropped all the food and pulled a large knife from a holster strapped to his boot. He slunk down the hall quietly. He could still smell her in the hallway; she had been drug this way. He could smell her fear, and that pissed him off more.
He got to the end of the hallway; there were two choices, the elevator or the stairs. That's when he caught two figures going down the stairs. Stairs he thought and flung him self over the rail. He was going to have to think fast once he landed, he had to land perfect. He wasn't going to do the girl any good if he stabbed himself in his landing. He had about another two second. As he hit the ground he crouched catching him self from rolling. He stood in front of the only exit from the stairs. He could hear her panting and who ever was with her dragging her down forcefully. He growled as the man in black hit the bottom step. He quickly grabbed the girl by the waist and jerked her free from the vile man. He slung her to the floor, she hit with a hard thud that knocked her breath out of her. What breath she had left.
The man went at him with a knife. Carson caught his hand and took the handle of the knife and busted the man in the ribs. The man grunted but continued to move forward. Carson grunted pushing against him, he needed to figure out something fast, and he couldn't kill him just yet. He needed to know who sent him, he had a pretty good idea but he needed to make sure. Carson took a deep breath and slung the guy to the ground and put his boot on the side of his face.
"Who sent you?" He asked in a rough voice. "No wait, excuse my manners, would you please tell me who sent you." He said with a mocking tone.
"Go to hell!" the man repeated.
Carson sighed.
"Now was that necessary? I mean, I was being polite until you were rude. Now tell me who you are working for and maybe I'll let you live."
The man laughed.
Carson growled and grabbed him by the hair bring him to his knees. He put the blade of his knife to the man's throat. He looked at a tattoo he had behind his ear. It was in the shape of a bat, he didn't understand. This man was a vampire, from the Cougar Clan. Had Tony gotten to that whole Clan? Or was this vampire just a outcast?
"I'm not telling you anything. You should know that Tony knows where you are. He is coming after you, he wants the girl. He said he will let you live if you hand over the girl." The man in black said.
Carson growled and pressed the blade in deeper to his neck.
"Never, he can't have the girl, and you tell Tony he is going to have to work harder than this if he wants to kill me. Has he forgotten why I'm such a resource to him? I will be waiting for his next move." Carson said as he quickly and forcefully sliced the blade across the man's throat.
A river of black colored liquid poured from the man's throat. Carson walked over and picked Riley up from around her waist and, pulled her outside the stair exit. She was in shock, she kept looking back. She couldn't believe that Carson had just killed that man. She looked up at him.
"You killed him." She whispered.
He scowled.
"Trust me, he isn't dead. That's why we have to get a move on. He is just stunned; he will heal in no time. Then he will be back trying to kill you."
"What do you mean? I just saw you cut his throat." She said disbelieving.
"He isn't human." He said flatly.
"What are you talking about? If he isn't human then what is he?" She asked.
"Just shut up and let me think!" He said walking across the parking lot.
He walked over to a old Pontiac red grand am. He opened the door and sat Riley down in front of the passenger door.
"Get in! And don't argue or I'll knock you out again." He said walking across the car. "And don't think about running." He added.
She did as she was told. She got in the car and buckled her seat belt and shut the door. Carson was sitting beside her within seconds. He ripped a plastic piece off near the steering wheel with ease. It exposed a bunch of multi colored wires. A few seconds later the car had started. He looked over at Riley.
"I hope you're not against grand theft auto." He said smiling.
She didn't say anything back. He quickly pulled out of the car lot and they were speeding down the highway once again. Once they were out of site of the hotel. Carson reached in his pocket and dialed Tyler's number. It rang twice.
"What's up?" Tyler asked.
"They found us, get the clothes and meet me at the air port. They tried to take her. We need to fly out of the city, hell the country if possible." Carson said.
"But where?" Tyler asked.
"Don't worry about that, just get to the air port, now!" Carson said.
"I'll be there." Tyler said.
Carson hung up the phone and looked over at Riley. She was staring blankly out the wind shield. He was guessing she was still in shock from what happened at the hotel. What did she expect though? She was warned that dangerous people were after her. Did she think they was just making all this up. Still he couldn't help but pity her, he wanted to comfort her, hold her, and tell her everything would be ok.
"Are you ok?" he asked her.
She looked over at him. She wanted to bust out crying. She couldn't believe that all of this was real. That people really where after her. She didn't know why, she hadn't done anything. She was a good person, she worked hard, stayed out of trouble and she never turned away a person in need. Why would someone want to hurt her?
"Why are they after me?" She asked.
Carson sighed.
"Because of your boyfriend Sam." He said.
Riley looked at him in shock.
"What does Sam have to do with this? Did he send the people to kill me?" She asked in horror.
Carson wished he could say yes. At least then his people would be easy to take down. But it wasn't that easy, and she needed to know how dangerous this was.
"No, it was Tony Rome. He was my boss. Your boyfriend is working on a case that has one of Tony's guys on trial. Tony tried to bribe Sam and Sam wouldn't take it. So I guess he thought killing you would intimidate him." Carson said.
"Oh. Well I doubt it would. Sam is too caught up in his work. I doubt he would even stop and cry over my cold dead body." Riley said dryly.
Carson looked at her to see she wasn't kidding. He felt horrible for her, didn't Sam realize she was with a beautiful, smart, and brave woman. He would give anything just touch her. Sam didn't realize how good he had it. But then again it would never work out between Riley and Sam, he was mortal and she was a Nomad daughter. She was meant to be with a Nomad. He felt him self feel a little too happy over that fact.
"Well, Sam is obviously an idiot. If he can't see how beautiful and charming you are." Carson said.
Riley looked at him.
"You really think so?" She asked.
Carson half smiled.
"I know so. And if you ask me you deserve someone better." He said.
She grinned and put her hand on his. He tensed, but didn't pull away. Her skin was as soft as it looked. It felt good to have her touch him. It was warm, comfortable even. It felt natural.
"So now that we are on good terms. Can you answer some questions?" She asked Carson.
Carson thought for a moment and then nodded.
"So what are you? And why didn't you finish the job?" Riley asked.
Carson sighed.
"Maybe I should start from the beginning. It will answer all the questions swarming in your head." Carson said.
She smiled and nodded.
"It was about two years ago. Tyler and I use to work for the military. We were apart of the Enforcers, a top secret organization, sworn to protect...people. We were working on a case to bring Tony down, me and Tyler and another one of our men Dean thought it would be easy. 'In and out' is how Dean put it." Carson said looking out the wind shield. "Well, none of us planned on being split up, see we were trained to work as a team. Sure we had skills to defend our selves alone but nothing enough to take on a job alone. We never left a man behind. I was the top sniper, Tyler was our expert explosive director, and Dean was just an all around bad ass." "Well Tony had us all right where he wanted us, he killed Dean, said he was weak and had no skills. But he said that I and Tyler had survived much longer than he has intended and he admired our skills, so he black mailed me and Tyler into working for him. Said he would kill our families and expose us. So we regrettably and cowardly agreed, he said we only had to work for him for two years." Carson said swallowing hard. "The Enforcers thought we all died on that mission. They mourned the deaths of two cowards; we could never go back to them. We could never be apart of the brotherhood again." "You were my last hit; I was done after this job. I was done killing innocent people after this last job. I was going to run away back to Ireland. Back to my family, and hope they didn't hate me. But I couldn't do it." Carson said disgusted with him self.
Riley touched his shoulder trying to soothe him.
"I'm so sorry. But why couldn't you do it?" She asked.
He looked at her, his face twisted with guilt, pain, and regret.
"The birth mark on your shoulder." He almost whispered.
"What? Because of a birth mark?" She asked.
