Kate
I woke up to my phone ringing. I looked at the time and noticed that it was later
than I’d expected.
“Hello, sleepy head,” Christian said walking into my room.
“Shut up,” I said chucking a pillow at him.
“Hey, don’t start that,” he told me sternly. I couldn’t help but laugh at his facial
expression.
“What are you doing,” I asked when I finally calmed down.
“Nothing much,” Christian answered. “Hey, Nate’s wondering if we wanna hang
out with them today.”
“Is Brittney feeling better,” I asked.
“Well, Nate’s taking her to the doctor and he’s hoping that they’ll be able to give
her something to make her feel better.”
“Oh, okay,” I said and then I crawled out of bed and walked over to him. I
wrapped my arms around his neck and gave him a kiss.
“Wow,” Christian said and then he gave me another kiss.
“Oh, I love it when you kiss me,” I laughed.
“You know what,” Christian said.
“What,” I asked looking up to see his face.
“We should go out tonight,” he said with a smile playing on his lips. “I mean, we
haven’t really had that much alone time lately.”
“I agree,” I said with my own smile.
“So it’s a date,” Christian asked.
“It’s a date, my dear Romeo,” I said. Christian stared at me for a moment then we
both started laughing.
“Oh, my sweet Juliet,” Christian laughed.
“You two are absolutely insane,” my mom said from my bedroom doorway. The
sound of her voice made me jump.
“What are you doing,” I asked her.
“Well, today is Saturday and there’s usually movies on Lifetime so I wanted to
know if you two would like to join me,” my mom said.
“Sure, we’ll be down in a few minutes,” I told her before she left to go
downstairs.
“Why the heck did you agree to that,” Christian asked me.
“I don’t know the movies are almost always suspense movies and it sounds fun,” I
said. “Plus, I have really spent much time with my mom since we got back so I
decided that it would be fun to watch a couple of movies with her. Don’t worry,
though, we are so totally still going on our date.” I stood up on my tippy toes and
kissed him, then I grabbed his hand and dragged him downstairs.
“What about Nate and Brittney,” Christian asked me as we sat down on the love
seat in the living room.
“They can come over,” I said. “You should text Nick and Sarah and invite them
over, too.”
“Sir, yes, sir,” Christian said jokingly.
“Is that an insult,” I asked him.
“No, so calm down,” he said kissing the top of my head.
“Wow, you two fit together so well,” my mom laughed from the recliner. I had
totally forgotten that she was in the room. I was so embarrassed!
“Kate, are you embarrassed,” Christian asked me with a hint of shock in his voice.
“What, no,” I said like the idea of me being embarrassed was impossible.
“Oh, she totally is but there’s no need embarrass her further,” my mom said.
“Thank you, mother,” I said giving her the evil eye.
After that we started watching Accused at 17.
Brittney
It seemed like we had been sitting at the clinic for hours, but when I checked the
time I had only been there for fifteen minutes.
“Brittney,” the nurse finally called my name.
The nurse weighed me, checked my height, and then had me pee in a cup. The
routine checkup, she assured me.
Finally, we were put in a room where we only had to wait a couple of minutes
before Dr. Hollington came in.
“Hello, Brittney,” he said, “how are you feeling today?”
“Miserable, is there anything that will make this sickness go away,” I asked
almost immediately.
“I’m sorry, you have to wait that out,” Dr. Hollington answered. “Although, for
most women the sickness isn’t as bad once they start taking prenatal vitamins.”
“Okay,” I said kind of relieved.
“We were wondering if she has the flu on top of her morning sickness,” Nate told
Dr. Hollington.
“I believe you do since your temperature seems to be kind of high,” Dr.
Hollington told me as he looked at the nurse’s notes.
“Is there something that will make that go away,” I asked hopefully.
“Just rest,” Dr. Hollington answered. “Normally if a patient was farther along I
would suggest bed rest, but seeing as how early into this pregnancy you are I
don’t think there’s anything to worry about.
“So what happens now,” Nate asked.
“We’re going to check the baby’s heartbeat and then I’ll answer any questions
that you two might have,” Dr. Hollington said.
“It’s not too early to hear the baby’s heartbeat,” I asked.
“It shouldn’t be,” the doctor said before instructing me to lie back and lift my
shirt to uncover my stomach. He squirted cold gel on my stomach and then
started moving the heart monitor around my stomach.
I hadn’t expected to cry, but when Dr. Hollington was done checking the baby’s
heart beat I found myself in tears.
“Brittney, are you okay,” Nate asked me worriedly.
“It’s tears of joy,” Dr. Hollington explained. “Most women get pretty emotional
when they hear their baby’s heartbeat.” He wiped the gel off of my belly. “Are
there any questions that either one of you may have?”
“Um, when exactly will I start showing,” I asked.
“Most women start showing after their first trimester so probably sometime
around your third to fourth month of pregnancy,” Dr. Hollington answered. I
nodded my head and turned towards Nate to see if he had any questions.
“When do we find out if it’s a boy or girl,” he asked excitedly.
“We can tell when Brittney’s eighteen to twenty weeks pregnant. That’s about
the end of the fifth month.”
“Thanks,” Nate said standing up, “I think that’s all for now.” He looked at me
for confirmation and I nodded my head. I stood up and pulled my jacket on.
“Take this to the pharmacy,” Dr. Hollington said handing me a slip of paper with
a prescription on it. “It’s for your prenatal vitamins. Also, make sure you make
an appointment for about a month from now.”
“Thanks,” I said before leaving the room with Nate. We stopped at the front desk
to make an appointment for the beginning of March.
“As we were leaving the clinic I found myself not being able to stop smiling.
“You seem to be happier,” Nate said. “Are you feeling better?”
“No, but I’m glad that I got to hear the heartbeat. I know it’s weird but when I
heard the heartbeat I knew that I would never be able to get an abortion. There’s
a human being that going to grow inside me, and for some reason that makes me
happy now.”
“Now, how are we going to explain why we have to go get prenatal vitamins to
my mom,” Nate asked.
“Crap, I totally forgot about that,” I said. “How are we even going to tell her that
I’m pregnant?”
“How about we just spit it out and then if she kicks us out I’m pretty sure we
could stay somewhere else,” he suggested.
“Nate, we can’t depend on other people the whole time,” I told him. “We need to
get jobs sometime soon.”
“I know,” he sighed. “My mom’s here so we can get your prenatal vitamins later.”
I agreed by nodding my head. We climbed into the car and drove silently back to
Nate’s house.
“Mom, can we talk in the living room,” Nate asked as we all walked into his
house.”
“Sure, honey,” she said going into the living room. She sat in the recliner and
Nate and I sat on the couch.
“There’s something we need to tell you and we’d like it if you at least tried not to
freak out,” Nate told her calmly.
“What is it,” Nate’s mom asked worriedly.
“I...I’m pregnant,” I stammered. Nate’s mom stared at us in shock and nobody
spoke for a while after I said that.
