Kate
Soon the silence became unbearable so I said, “What exactly did you want to
talk about?”
“Oh, sorry I must have gotten lost in my own thoughts,” Brittney said. “Have
you ever just had those moments where you just sit there and ask yourself if
something is real?”
“I guess so, but what exactly did you bring me in here to talk about,” I asked.
“I don’t know, I guess I kind of thought that you had something to talk about
with me. What I mean is that since yesterday afternoon I’ve been getting the
feeling that you have something to tell me.”
“Huh, that’s weird,” I said. “I wasn’t really going to tell you, but since you
mentioned it I might have a couple possible things that might be wrong with
you. Of course, I’m no doctor I’m just going off of what I searched on the
internet.”
“What do you think is wrong with me,” Brittney asked.
“My first possible diagnosis is that you might be pregnant,” I said.
“How the heck can I be pregnant,” Brittney exclaimed.
“I don’t know, but once you think about it there’s a very possible scenario as
to how you could be pregnant,” I explained.
“Like what,” she asked.
“Maybe the first time you and Nate had sex you forgot to take your birth
control, and then the condom might have broken,” I suggested. “I honestly
don’t know, but when I searched your symptoms that’s what came up.”
“What’s your second thing that you think might be wrong with me,” Brittney
asked.
“It could me endometriosis,” I answered.
“What the heck is that,” she asked.
“I can’t really remember what exactly it is. All that I know is that it cause
really bad pelvic pain,” I told her.
“What about stomach cancer,” she asked quietly. “Did any of my symptoms
match the symptoms of that?”
“Yeah, but those symptoms don’t show up until a later stage of the cancer,” I
said.
“So are you saying not to worry or to worry?”
“I honestly am saying to not worry,” I said. “No matter how sucky it sounds, I
think that you’re either pregnant or have endometriosis..”
“Is endometriosis like cancer,” Brittney asked quietly.
“No, neither one of those is like cancer. Endometriosis is curable, but I forgot
if it’s through a procedure or medication.”
“But how could being pregnant be any better than having cancer? Kate, I’m
fifteen which means that I’m not ready to have a baby,” Brittney said totally
freaked out. She was on the verge of being hysterical.
“Brittney, calm down,” I told her. “Like I said those are just two scenarios. I’m
no doctor, but I think you should see one.”
“How many times do I have to tell you people,” she said exasperatedly. “I’m
waiting a couple weeks before I make an appointment.”
“Why are you waiting to make an appointment, though?”
“Because at least then I’ll know if my period came or not,” she answered. “If I
miss my period then I’m most likely pregnant, right?”
“Not necessarily, but I see where you’re coming from,” I said. As an after-thought I said, “Brittney, when was your last period?”
“I’ve already told you it was like two to three weeks ago,” she answered.
“No, I mean the date you got your period,” I said specifically.
“December twenty-sixth or twenty-seventh,” Brittney told me. “Why are you asking me this?”
“Brittney today is the twenty-eighth of January,” I replied.
“What’s your point,” she asked.
“I’m saying that if you get your periods on a regular basis, you would have
gotten it a couple of days ago,” I pointed out.
“So are you saying that I should make an appointment?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” I told her. “Don’t sit here and let your pain
get worse, make an appointment at the clinic and let them figure out what’s
wrong.”
“Okay, I didn’t really like Dr. Williams, though,” she replied.
“As for Dr. Hollington, I really liked him; he’s a good doctor,” I said.
“Okay, should I make the appointment now, or should I wait until tomorrow?”
“Go ahead and call them right now and make an appointment,” I told her.
She was still hesitant while she picked up her phone and dialed the number.
Brittney
“Okay, that works thanks,” I said before hanging up the phone.
“What did they say,” Kate asked me.
“They have an available appointment in an hour, and they want me to go in
then,” I told her.
“So you’re going to go?”
“Yes, I’m going to go, but what about Nate? I know it sounds mean, but I
don’t really want him to go,” I said truthfully.
“Why not,” she asked.
“I don’t want him there if I find out I’m pregnant,” I told her.
“Why not,” she asked again.
“Because who knows how he’ll react,” I said.
“Okay, so where are you going to say you’re going while you’re there?”
“Don’t you mean while we’re there,” I asked. I saw the look on her face, and
said, “Well, I want somebody to go with me and I want that somebody to by
you.”
“We could say the stor, or we could be honest and say that you decided to
make an appointment,” Kate told me.
“I guess we’ll be honest,” I mumbled.
“Here I’m going to call Christian’s mom to see if she’ll give us a ride. You can
go ahead and get ready to go.”
“K,” I said.
I put on sweatpants, a tank top, and a zip up hoodie. After that I put my hair in
a ponytail and brushed my teeth. Once I was ready Kate and I headed into the
living room.
I nibbled on my PB&J as we walked.
“Where are you two going,” Nate asked us as we entered the living room and
sat down on the couch.
“Well, Brittney decided to make an appointment at the clinic,” Kate said.
“Although, she wants you to stay here and enjoy your game day.”
“I want to go, though,” Nate complained. “Plus, how are you going to get
there?”
“Nate, just stay here,” I told him. “I promise you that we won’t be that long.”
“Fine I’ll stay, but I want you back as soon as possible,” Nate said looking at
me.
“I promise, and Christian’s mom will be picking us up and bringing us back
here,” I said forcing a smile.
“Okay, that sounds good to me, but how long will you be?”
“An hour at the longest hopefully,” Kate answered. “We should get going since
Christian’s mom is here.”
We all said our goodbye’s, and then Kate and I left.
Christian
“Now you’re worried, aren’t you,” I asked Nate.
“Uh yeah, who wouldn’t be worried if they were in my situation,” he asked
rhetorically.
“I see your point, but most girls would rather have their best friends
accompany them to a doctors appointment rather than their boyfriends so
it’s nothing to worry about,” I assured him.
“I hope you’re right,” Nate muttered.
“Are you feeling down because if there’s something wrong with Brittney
you’re not going to be there to comfort her when she finds out?” He nodded
his head in answer. “Well don’t be,” I said, “she’s the one who wanted you to
stay here and relax. Now stay here and relax,” I said while I chucked a pillow
at him.
“Don’t,” he complained.
“Come on it’s not like she’s not going to tell you what’s wrong once she gets
back so stop it and actually play the game,” I told him.
“I guess you’re right,” he replied.
After that he stopped moping and actually got involved in the game.
Brittney
“So,” Dr. Hollington said sitting down on his stool, “what seems to be the
problem?”
I looked at Kate before I answered, “Um, I’m having somewhat mild cramps
and I’ve been really nauseous the past few days.”
“Anything else,” Dr. Hollington asked.
“No,” I answered.
“When was your last period?”
“December twenty-sixth or twenty-seventh,” I told him.
“Have you gotten your next one yet?”
“No,” I said.
“Do you always have regular periods?”
“Yeah, they come at least every twenty-nine days,” I said awkwardly.
“Are you sexually active?”
“Yeah,” I said even more awkwardly.
“Are you on birth control?”
“Yeah, I have the pill,” I said.
“On a scale of one to ten, one being not so bad and ten being extremely
painful, how bad are your cramps?”
“Right now they’re about a five or six,” I told him.
“Have the been worse?”
“Yeah, they range from a five to an eight,” I said. I had to say I was getting
very sick of the questions.
“Have you ever thought that you might be pregnant?”
My heart stopped for a second. Great, first Kate had been suggesting it now
the doctor?
“No, but Kate did,” I said.
“Wait, she did think she was pregnant, but when she took a home pregnancy
test it came back negative,” Kate explained.
I had totally forgotten about that.
“Well, if you don’t mind then I would like to test you to make sure if you are
or are not pregnant,” Dr. Hollington said.
“Wait, I’ve got a quick question,” I said. “Is it possible that I might have stomach?”
“Personally, I don’t think you have stomach cancer. If you did have cancer
you would have some sort of bump or something on your stomach. Are you
okay?”
“Yeah, I’m relieved,” I smiled.
“Okay, do you have any questions before I begin the tests,” Dr. Hollington
asked.
“No, I’m good,” I said.
“Okay, I’ll have a nurse come and give you instructions, and I’ll be back in a
few minutes. Does that sound okay?”
“Yeah,” I told him before he left the room.
“You still look worried,” Kate said looking at me worriedly.
“I’m fine, I promise,” I said with a somewhat forced smile.
“I can tell you’re not, but we’ll talk later,” Kate said as the nurse walked into
the room.
“Are you Brittney,” the nurse asked me.
“Yeah,” I said.
After that she started giving me instructions the doctor had told her to give to me.
I kind of got lost towards the middle, but she helped me out. When all the testing
was done Dr. Hollington sent me home saying that he would call me when he got
the results.
