I’ve always wondered how it would feel to get shot. If you get hit by a bullet will it hurt?
Well my answer to that is no? I feel strangely numb. Nothing, like at all. It felt like I didn’t even get shot. I felt my torso.
Nothing.
As if I didn’t get shot.
Wait I didn’t get shot.
I’M NOT DEAD!
Instead, I heard loud laughter.
Kai’s laughter.
“Oh my god! Look at your face!” He tried to breathe through his laughter, he was on the floor.
“KAI! WHAT THE HELL!” I breathed out.
“No one said payback was going to be easy.”
I was curious and confused, and my heart was pounding, but I couldn’t help but smile.
“One question how the fu-”
The loud sound of gunfire sounded again but this time, I didn’t panic so hard. He did it with his mouth. My eyes widened.
I kneeled down beside him. “Oh my god. Do that again!”
And he did. Awesome.
“What else can you do?” He was lying on the floor and I didn’t realize how close I was. He looked at me with a twinkle in his eyes. He got up on his elbow facing me.
I was clearly confused. What did I say?
He was leaning in, almost on top of me. I panicked. What’s he doing? His face was only inches away. Oh his about to…oh god, but I don’t know how to there’s rules and stuff right? I looked into his eyes, which stupid because I couldn’t look away I love his eyes.
“KAI I’M HOME- oh shit! At least close the door, and put up a sign saying keep out hormones gone wild or something.”
Oh fuck… this is freaken awkward, Kai sat up fast from the sudden outburst, and I turned beetroot. I covered my face I’ve never felt this embarrassed like ever.
“Muuuummm, oh god… you’re a crazy human.” Kai muttered and groaned.
“Love you too Kiki, naaaww Gabby you don’t need to be embarrassed.” I looked at her.
“Psst Kai, don’t forget protection!” she whispered sternly. Before innocently skipping away. “MUUUUM…”
Oh god, Grace you’re one of a kind. This is awkward. I quickly got up. “umm… I should get going.” Before he could respond I ran for it. “GABRIELLA!” Kai kept calling me even after I ran for the streets.
I ran and ran through the streets, into town. My stomach growled, other than the banana I had in the morning I ate nothing. Except for the apple Kai forced me to eat at lunch, because I wouldn’t eat anything else.
He threatened me that he would keep using pickup lines for the rest of lunchtime, I had to give in. come on you would to right? I walked up to the bakery that I went to a few weeks back and walked in I had a whole hour and a half to waste before I need to go meet up with Bruce. I walked up to the front. There wasn’t anyone there. I sighed and leaned on the counter waiting.
A full thirty seconds past and I was getting impatient. Yes I’m very impatient especially when I’m not in the mood for thing like today. I let my head drop onto my arms. So you could imagine how I looked heads down leaning against the counter.
“Umm… Hello? Are you alright?” I jumped; I could’ve sworn there wasn’t a soul here five seconds ago.
“I’m fine, thanks, can I just have-“ I was cut off by his voice again.
“A blueberry muffin and hot chocolate.” Should I be concerned that he knows this? “Umm... yes...please?” what the hell?
“Sure, by the way don’t freak out it’s just that you order the same thing every time and I’ve got a sharp memory?” I looked up at him before he walked to the… what I assume is the kitchen. Okay maybe I judged him a bit harshly last time. But I’m not going to trust anyone. Anymore that is.
He came back in less than two minutes. “Here you go-” This time I cut him off. I gave him the money and was about to leave. I feel so rude. I’m not that type of person. I turned around only to see him still standing there staring at me. I shot him a warm smile, “Thanks, Joe.” He smiled back at me widely. I waved and walked out.
I ate my muffin slowly and sipped my hot chocolate. When I was done I had an hour left. I walked along the streets towards the forest when my phone rang.
“Yellow?”
“Gabriella! Why did you run out?”
“I told you I couldn’t stay for long.” I said. Lying and let me add, smoothly. Well it’s not lying, it’s kind of true.
“But I didn’t teach you anything.”
I felt really awkward. “Stuff it.”
“No. Tomorrow. We’ll start in school to five tomorrow. Let’s see how fast you learn.”
I was about to say don’t worry about it but was cut off. “That’s not even an offer.” He said sternly.
“But…” he quickly added. “And no Buts.”
“See you tomorrow. Gabriella. Don’t forget I know where you live.”
What the hell.
“Not creepy at all Kiki. Not creepy at all.” I smiled. “Bye.”
“Bye bye, Gigi.” I laughed. Hard what the hell is Gigi that was so bad. I hung up.
I walked some more. I lost track of time. Before I knew it, it was already ten to six. So I ran. He wasn’t around. I was going to scare him. Watch and learn, my friends.
I climbed a tree and stayed low. No I’m not going to fall out this time. I heard him coming before I saw him. He looked around and stood close to my tree. I grabbed my pocketknife, opened it and jumped off. I landed softly and held the knife to Bruce’s neck. He panicked and jumped a little but then, he laughed. Like actually laughed.
“What I could kill you right now.”
“Yeah Gabriella, you could, at least hold the knife properly.”
I looked down, and he’s right. I was holding the blunt end to his neck instead of the sharp end. Whoops. But I wasn’t going to admit to that.
“Of course I did. I-I obviously wasn’t going to kill you I was just messing with ya.”
“Yeah right.” He smirked at me.
“Hey Bruce.” I looked up at him and fluttered my eyelashes. “Can you perhaps teach me how to use this?” I gave him my best puppy dog eyes I could master and I could master the puppy dog eyes.
He sighed after a full minute. “Fine, show me.” I think I looked confused because he then gestured to the knife.
His eyes widened. “It’s a Cold Steel Mackinac Hunter… where the hell did you get this from?”
He looked suspiciously at the engraving of my second name. Shit. “Lottie. Who’s Lottie?”
I sighed I have to tell him or he’ll think I stole it. “Me. My second name is Charlotte. Charlotte Phoenix. My brother left this for me. Lottie is my nickname that only my brother uses. But I kind of don’t know how to use it.”
I looked down. I glanced up after ten seconds. To see his eyes widen. He quickly covered it up though. “I’m sorry. Here I’ll teach you a few tricks and techniques.”
“Okay.” He started. “If a man launches himself on you…
This continued for another two hours. By the end he taught me how to strike a man from the front the back and how to throw a knife at a target at limbs without killing my opponents. I was proud that I could actually throw this knife pretty far and get it stuck on a tree trunk. I was so happy. He also taught me how to kill someone. Not that I’m going to use it. I’ll never kill someone. Like ever.
I grinned at him in the dark. “Not bad Phoenix, not bad at all, I thought girls were weak.” I smirked. Then I growled at him before launching myself at him. hard enough to knock him over.
“Don’t you ever underestimate girls. Like never.” I glared at him. He smirked at me. “Sorry.” Then I hugged him. “Thanks.” He stiffened, before relaxing a bit. “Thanks for teaching me how to protect myself.” I smiled at him and then smirked. “Speaking of self-defence. I stood up for myself at school,” he looked at me and smiled, so I told everything that happened with Veronica, by the time I reached the end of the story he was laughing. “That’s the Gabriella I know.” He patted me on the head.
I grinned then I realized that I’ve been straddling him the whole time since I’ve tackled him down. I quickly got up. “Sorry, I didn’t realize-” he put a hand against my mouth. And a finger against his lips. Signalling to me to ‘Shhhh’. Then I heard it.
I twig snapped in the distance. Bruce neck snapped to that direction, at the same time he grabbed my hand and ran for it. I obviously almost fell but he held me up steadily. I ran as fast as I could, I was levelled up with Bruce then we reached his motorbike.
“Here put this on quick.” I caught the helmet and put it on. I heard faint but heavy footsteps. He revved up his bike, “Come on!” I jumped on and held onto him for dear life as he flew off on the back wheel.
Crazy kid.
I stole a glance behind us and saw a built man running out of the woods. He was panting. He had something black in his hands. Crap. Before I could say anything. Bruce speed off faster than ever. He drove for a full fifteen minutes before he slowed down and stopped. I loosened my grip.
I was trembling. He was going to shot. My breath hiked up a bit. I got of the bike and walked off. A bus station was a few metres away. I sat down and pulled out my inhaler. Calmed down and stared off in the distance. So he wasn’t kidding.
The man on the phone, I mean.
Bruce sat down next to me on the bench. “Hey, you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” I looked at him, smiled and looked down.
I looked away. I don’t understand anymore. What’s happening?
“Hey, want to learn how to drive a motorbike?” Bruce tried. That actually made me look up. “Really?” I asked hopefully.
“Well what’s the harm?” he looked at me.
“Actually didn’t bother answering that. Come on.” He got up. I looked around it was practically deserted. “Well at least I won’t kill anyone.” I mumbled to myself.
“Don’t worry, you won’t come here and I’ll teach you the basics.”
So he did he just taught me how to work the handle and the brakes, which sounded easy. He got on and told me to hope on in front.
“Come on drive. So I did. but at turtle pace. I got so freaked out when Bruce leaned on me and enclosed my hands and speed up. I squealed. “No. No. NO!” it was twice as scary. Yet I was laughing. This is fun, I reckon after a bit of practice I could drive just as fast. Maybe. I am a girl.
Girls learn faster, and that’s a fact in my book.
