Vampire Mates
30: Don’t Say Goodbye

Narrative Point of View

Rosemarie Smith moved cautiously, her feet softly shuffling towards the shining bright light at the end of the tunnel. She bit her lip nervously, and then she continued to walk towards the stream of bright light.

When she got closer to the light, the world shifted. The once dimly lighted room glowed with the colors of the rainbow. Rose shied her eyes away from the glaring light, but her grey eyes blinked hesitantly, slowly adjusting to the bright light.

Then she winced as she saw where she was.

This must be the 12-year-old girl’s dream that Enoch was talking of. Rose admit, she might’ve had a dream like this before, but to come back to such a happy and cheerful dream, Rose felt like someone was trying to rub it in her face that her once happy life was no longer so because of one certain boy.

Or should I say, vampire?

Or, even better, prince and soon-to-be king.

A little girl with two blond and preppy pigtails was sitting in a pool of red, somehow thorn-less roses and pink tulips and poppies. More than two rainbows decorated the abnormally blue sky with clouds of different shapes and sizes.

Rose snorted at the sight as the girl rode on a pony – or was it a unicorn? – as she chased after a butterfly. If Rose was to have a dream like this now, she could probably name out all of the things wrong/illogical in this stupid dream.

For example, the red roses; well, dear girl, you’re going to have a tough time realizing that roses have pricks and they will hurt you.

Oh, and that butterfly? Well, Rose was no scientist, but she’d like to believe that it was safe to claim that the butterfly was probably harmful, judging on the colorful splotches of green, red, pink, purple, yellow, and blue.

“Remember to make it bad,” Enoch’s hushed whispered travelled into Rose’s ears, reminding her that the reason she was here was to be bad.

Rose bit her lip. A snarky smile then formed on her lips, and a glint of evil glimmered in her grey eyes.

Bad, you say? Where to start?

---

Not even 10 minutes later, the little girl’s dream-world had already been destroyed, and was in utter chaos.

The once pretty and fluffy clouds were now images of grey smudges of what seemed like demons. They were scattering rain all over the now dark and dull field of grass, and some were sending bolts of lightning.

The girl who once had a big smile on her face, and had been riding on a unicorn/pony hybrid with rosy cheeks was now screaming in terror as she ran away from the stampede of scary monsters that Rose had created to haunt the girl for the rest of her life. As sadistic as it was, Rose was enjoying the way that the little girl was crying like crazy for her mommy and daddy while her little feet ran as fast as possible, away from the monsters.

On the other side of the field, 3 good Xlinx – 2 boys, 1 girl – were dressed in white robes. They all scowling at the mess Rose had made. One of them stood firm on the ground as he tried to summon enough energy to make the sky brighter. But the demonic clouds that Rose had created boomed and crackled, shooting down a bright lightning, almost burning the Xlinx into ashes.

“Goodness Xlinxes,” The male hissed as he eyed the hole formed by the lightning. “This person must go down. He’s ruining everything.”

The girl placed a hand on his shoulder, “Come, let us join forces, and defeat whoever this is.”

Linking their hands together and interlocking them in a pattern where only the best of the Xlinx knew of, they began to mutter enchantments under their breaths.

“That that we walk on, earth,” One of them called out. Dirt began rising up and swirling around them.

“That that we pray to, sky,” The girl said. A loud gust of wind blew, but the three Xlinx stood, their feet grounded firmly.

“And that that is below everything, underworld,” the last boy called out over the loud roar of wind.

With as strong magical aura surrounding them, the group of three raised their hands together and created a ball of energy. They aimed it at the epicenter of all the bad things happening, the place which seemed like the calm of a hurricane.

“Surprise there,” A soft whisper that was small but enough to scare the three said. The team jumped and turned around, only to be shocked to see Rose in her torn garments standing her, a black rose in her hand. The thorns pricked her skin, but she didn’t feel it anymore. She smiled bitterly at the three. “Looking for me?”

“Who are you?” One of the boys asked. He was the eldest of them all, the one with the most experience. He’s been on countless missions, yet he had never seen the girl before.

“I’m a new… recruit,” She simply shrugged. She eyed the ball of energy that was before her. She simply thought destroy, and the ball burst, with harmless ember-like rocks shooting out from it.

The girl eyed her with fear in her eyes. “W-Who are you? Really?”

“I’m your biggest nightmare,” Rose gave them a crooked smile.

“No!” A screamed silenced everything. A woman stood up from the ground, and Rose scowled immediately, her lips turning into a sneer.

“Cranelia. Didn’t I tell you to get the hell out of my life?” Rose hissed angrily. The woman looked at her heatedly.

“Miss,” the rest of the three bowed down quickly at the sight of the very wise and famous woman. All of them eyed Rose, thinking the same thing, that Cranelia could just kill her in a second flat.

Cranelia acknowledged them with a simple nod that said ‘I’ll take it from here’. The three took a step back, staying a good 5 meter radius from the intense stare down of the good and bad Xlinx.

“You’re good, Rose. I know you are. Stop doing this-”

“Good God, Cranelia, do you not know where to stop trying?” Rose screamed in rage as she blasted a shot of fire at the disowned princess of Alfea. Cranelia simply dodged it by stepping to the side. Rose kept on shooting fiery balls at the obviously experience woman.

“Rose,” Cranelia tried gently. “I know what I am doing, okay? Good people turn bad easily, Rose, and most of the time, they turn due to revenge. But trust me when I say that they don’t live a good life after they’ve gotten their satisfaction from hurting others that once hurt them.”

“Go away, Cranelia,” Rose said stubbornly. “I’m old enough to make my own decisions, alright? I’m not a little baby who’s immature and am having a dream of poppies and rainbows of pots of gold.” She shot a look at the three Xlinx at the side a look.

“I’m here to help, Rose-”

She didn’t want to hear anything anymore.

Pain, she thought silently.

Before she vaporized into thin air, she managed to catch a glimpse of Cranelia and the three Xlinx withering on the ground, crying in pain.

For some reasons, Rose didn’t feel guilty at all.

Demetri’s Point of View

“Are you still worrying over that bitch?” Lily scowled as she eyed me from the corner of her eyes. She quickly dabbed some concealer at the point where her shoulder and neck met, covering up the holes that I had given her with my fangs.

I sat up, my face cold and devoid of any emotions. “No,” I forced myself to say. “I love you, remember?”

As if Lily couldn’t hear the sarcasm in my voice, she smiled in satisfaction. What an idiot. Why had I ever thought that she was smart? Could she not hear the lack of emotions in my voice?

“Alright then, baby,” She smiled as she kissed me, lingering for 2 seconds before releasing me. My mind tossed another bad remark at her again.

Did she not realize that I didn’t kiss her back?

Blonde (who’s not even blond) much?

“I’m going to meet with Lady Oceania and Cathryna at the gardens,” Lily said as she stripped in front of me and changed into a pretty yet flamboyant summer dress. She flicked her wavy hair to one side and applied some lip gloss and dabbed some eye shadow on. 5 days ago, I would’ve thought that she had never looked better, but now, my mind was whirling around another girl.

“See you later,” Lily sang as she grabbed purse at her vanity table. As she walked out the door, I saw a girl scurrying after her.

Yeah, that’s her personal maid.

I laid back onto the Californian king bed and a sigh escaped my lips. I rubbed my eyes, tired. I hadn’t been able to sleep for the past few days. Vampires usually can last for a week without rest, but they crash for a whole day after that.

I’ve tired myself by thinking and worrying over Rose for the past few days. Is Rose okay? Is she coping alright? Have she been hurt?

I sighed again. Why did I care so much?

Is she really my mate?

Feeling fed up from the constant thoughts about Rose, I decided to close my eyes, and I instantly fell into a deep sleep.

-----

“Demetri,” A whisper reached my ears. It was a delicate and harmonious voice. It sounded like a lullaby, beautiful. “It’s me… Rose.”

My ears perked up in anticipation. I looked around me, looking for a certain someone.

“I-” Her voice sounded vulnerable. “I’m going.”

My heart stopped, “Where? What do you mean going? Where are you now?” I asked hectically.

“You have Lily, Demetri,” Rose said, her voice stronger. “I’m only here to tell you to take care of Lily-”

“Bullshit,” I hissed, “Tell me, Rose, tell me that you still have something for me, because I do. Stay with me, Rose-”

“No,” Her voice had turned as hard as steel, as cold as ice. “I’m glad to say that my stupid crush on you has dissolved. I’ve matured, Demetri.”

“Who are you and what have to done to Rose?” I wasn’t even attempting to joke. My voice was desperate for Rose to at least let a bit of emotion seep through her beautiful yet cold voice. “This isn’t the Rose I know. The Rose I know is fun, friendly, and amazing.”

“Amazing?” I could imagine her scoffing, “Odd. I never heard you say anything about that before.”

“Look, Rose, I was blinded-”

“I just came to say goodbye, alright?” Rose interjected softly.

“Don’t,” My voice cracked as I felt my eyes dampened. “Please don’t say goodbye.”

“Bye.”

“Don’t say goodbye, because goodbye means going away, and going away means forgetting,” I whispered silently.

“Goodbye, Demetri,” Rose’s voice cracked a bit, but she coughed and recomposed herself. “Have a nice life without me intruding, alright?”

“Rose,” I called out, my voice yearning for at least a bit of emotion. “I’m never saying goodbye. I’ll never forget you.”

She was silent.

And I swore I heard it, I really did, but she whispered softly.

“See you again…”

And I woke up.
