Arrival

     It was a gothic town.
It seemed very remote compared to the other cities Isaac had driven by, and the black clouds and fog made it hard to see anything. That could have just been the time of day, though. He hoped that's what it was.
The cab driver didn't seem very talkative, and Isaac was okay with that. He would rather observe his surroundings than become engrossed in conversation, especially at almost midnight. They passed by probably five small cemeteries, and when they passed by the forest Isaac saw leftover paint and extinguished candles. The deeper they got into town, the more scarce the streetlights became, so the lights of the car were the only things keeping them going.
Isaac couldn't help but worry about the small things. He had moved to a very northern part of Ireland, so he worried about understanding people. It was obvious he wasn't from there by his onyx hair and American accent, and he was nervous he would be mocked.
Moving so far away so quickly was probably a bad idea, but Isaac was so desperate for a change that he decided to do it anyway. The colleges nearby seemed perfect, and the one he had chosen was only walking distance. He hadn't packed much, so only two pitiful suitcases were stuffed in the back of the cab.
"Here we are." The driver's scruffy voice startled Isaac out of his thoughts. "Want help with your luggage?"
"No thanks, uh..I've got it." Quickly, Isaac slid out of his seat and ran to the back, pulling out the bags. He rummaged through his wallet and slapped a twenty into the driver's hand. The cab prices here were cheap- at least that's a positive.
As soon as the car drove away, Isaac started to shake. The house looked normal- in fact, it was just like any house you'd see in America. He wasn't worried about the house, though; he was worried about the giant graveyard behind it. Unlike the small patches he had passed, this was an official, gated off cemetery. It looked closed now, but the walls were so dilapidated he could probably find a hole to crawl in through somewhere (not that he'd do that).
Isaac walked in and sighed in relief at the welcoming feeling of the house. This was the safe haven from the darkness. A small kitchen was attached to the living room- and the couch looked like the comfiest thing in the world. Dragging the bags behind him, he rushed to the bedroom.
Isaac turned on a lamp and face planted onto the bed, inhaling the smell of fabric and dust. He rolled over onto his back and stared at the ceiling, smiling in satisfaction at the house he had picked. It was isolated, sure, but that meant he would be left alone.
He and his mother hadn't spent that much money on the house, and that was surprising considering the quality. Isaac's first guess was that no one liked the location, but he knew jack shit about real estate. At least his cheap ass still got a great house.
Plagued by jet lag and overall exhaustion, Isaac unmade the bed and took off his shoes. No point in changing- he was just going to get dressed again anyway. The air conditioner was a good enough noise maker for now, and he left a little light on in the hallway. He hated the dark, and he hated quiet.
Despite being comfy, Isaac couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. He sat up and closed his blinds, and then he was finally able to fall asleep.
