I had successfully avoided Thomas the entire day, dreading the awkward rejection that was coming my way. I had just finished filming my scenes and was walking back to my trailer. My eyes darted around the lot before I quickly rushed to my parked trailer. I ripped open the door and threw myself onto the small couch with a sigh. I didn't notice Thomas sitting in the chair scrolling through his phone.
He spoke up, "you've been avoiding me." My eyes shot open to see him. I let out a small yelp of shock and instantly covered my mouth. He dropped his head in a laugh and shifted his body in the chair so he was facing me.
I swiped the messy wig from my forehead, "no I haven't." It was a complete lie but he didn't need to know that.
He shook his head, "c'mon Maya. I know you... you've been avoiding me."
I stood up shaking my head and grabbed my water bottle, "I haven't been. Now if you excuse me I need to go get my wig and makeup removed." I rushed to the door but Thomas was somehow quicker and blocked my exit.
His eyes held a mischievous glint, "perfect because I do to." I stared at his eyes that were still rimmed with dark eyeliner and felt trapped by his icy irises. I gulped and broke the eye contact. He opened the door for both of us. We filed out of the trailer and began the short walk to the costuming trailer. He bumped into me every now and then, "you can't get rid of me that easily."
I scoffed, "Please you would know if I was trying to get rid of you."
He snorted, "I don't doubt it. So if you haven't been avoiding me and you're not trying to get rid of me... what's going on?"
I shrugged, "nothing. Guess I just haven't seen you that much today."
"Thinking that all our scenes were joint scenes, I'm gonna call bullshit on that one. But I'll give you another try."
I sighed and ran my hand through the curly black wig, "Okay so maybe I was avoiding you."
"Now we're getting somewhere." It was silent for a moment between us. His next words came out surprisingly soft, "Was it because of last night?"
I didn't miss the hurt in his voice and my heart broke at the sound. I glanced up to see him and noticed his mood shift. I sighed, "I haven't been avoiding you. I've been avoiding rejection."
"Maya—"
"No Thomas, I get it. Last night we got caught up in the moment and we kissed. That doesn't mean you want to date me and that's okay." I stopped in front of the costuming trailer, "You missed your stop."
I pointed to the makeup trailer that was a few spots back and while his head followed my finger I ducked into the costuming trailer. I didn't get to see his reaction but I assume it was one of frustration. I smiled at the costuming ladies and just took my seat as they began to carefully remove my wig. China was also in there and I guess she noticed my unusual silence because she looked at me with concern.
"Hey maya." My attention snapped to her, "You okay?"
I smiled and let out a small nod. She could tell that I didn't want to talk to her so she didn't push me. I could hear her phone ding every few seconds and I was curious as to who it was especially when she kept looking my way. It didn't take much thought to piece it together and I just groaned before looking at her.
"What's he saying?"
She bit her lip, "he's confused. Sweetheart, you confused him."
I rolled my eyes, "What did he tell you?"
"About this situation or about the uh... previous one?"
My eyebrow quirked up and I shot her a look. Her eyes darted to the ladies brushing out my wig and I understood. The costuming ladies were huge gossips.
"Actually China, don't worry about it. It's something that we can fix."
She knew that this was a conversation for a different time, "Are you sure?"
I nodded and sighed in relief when they took the wig cap off of my head, "yeah I'm sure. It'll blow over soon enough."
"Okay just let me know if you need anything."
"Thanks babe." I got up from the chair and ran my hair through my now flowing hair. I ruffled it slightly before walking out of the door and heading back to my trailer.
I opened the door to my trailer a minute later and there was Thomas waiting for me with a big grin on his face. "What do you want?"
"One date."
My eyes widened in shock, "What?"
"I know you pushing me away is a defense mechanism because you were hurt in the past." I shifted my weight uncomfortably, "and maybe you don't want to date me but Maya you've got it all wrong." He took a step closer and my arms dropped to my sides, "I would never hurt you like he did. I don't think you are just some booty call. I think you are an amazing actress, singer, and woman. I would lucky to date a woman like you. Now, I would understand if you didn't want to date me but—"
I didn't let him finish as I pressed a soft kiss to his lips. I pulled away and brushed my hair behind my ear, "I would love to go on a date with you."
He smiled, "How about as soon as we are presentable in public we grab some late lunch, early dinner."
I nodded my head, "that sounds great. Just let me get changed out of my costume and take off my makeup."
"Of course. I will be waiting for you outside." I felt myself blush heavily as he closed the door behind me. I couldn't help myself as I did a small jump for joy before realizing just how little time I had. I quickly pulled off the maroon velvet long sleeve and tossed it onto the couch. I pulled on my white windbreaker with no top on underneath and peeled off the tight black leather pants I wear for the movie. I shimmy into some much more comfortable jeans and tuck my sunglasses into the collar of my shirt. I rush towards the mirror and quickly grab a makeup wipe as I remove the heavy makeup. Fortunately, it comes off quit easily and I'm ready to go as I slip into my white Nike sneakers. I shoulder my small purse and swing open the door. There's Thomas with a smile on his face waiting for me.
"That was quick."
I laughed and flipped my messy hair off my shoulder, "I am a woman of many talents."
He laughed and led the way towards hi car, "is that nearby bakery okay?"
"Of course I love that place."
"Good." We both got into the car and he slowly pulled off the property and into the busy traffic. The drive was short and spent in a comfortable silence. I used the time to throw my hair into two messy braids so that the knots would be less visible but I don't think it did much. He parked in the closest available spot and we began to walk down the sidewalk. I could see multiple paparazzi taking photos of us and I knew I looked like a mess with my hair in two braids that were falling out of its hold. But my worries about the upcoming news articles were shooed away when Thomas nudged me to let me know we were there and we were escorted to a small table towards the back of the restaurant.
"So...." He started gently after we ordered our food, "We kissed before we knew what we were."
I nodded and inhaled sharply, "we did. So where do we go from here?"
"Well I would love to take you on as many dates as you would let me and then you can decide whether or not you would like to date me."
I smiled, "Thomas. I've already made up my mind."
"Well with how we started I'm not sure if this is good or bad." He joked and I stifled a laugh. "Do I want to hear your decision?"
I smiled at him and nodded, "I think so."
"So then, because you deserve it, we put aside the decision and just enjoy our first date together and maybe afterwards we'll see where we stand."
I nodded, "sounds like a plan."
