“Blake will you stop doing that” I heard Holly shout. I looked up from the box that I had been carrying in the beautiful May sun and watched Blake keep walking past Holly and bumping into her on purpose.
I sighed as I placed the box on the floor at the side of the shelves. “I told you I would carry that” Jake said as he placed a box at the side of mine.
“Its fine it’s not even heavy it’s just the weather” I said to him. He pulled out a pocket knife from his front shorts pocket and sliced the sellotape on the top. He leaned over so then he could do the same to my box. I started to pull out all of the stock that Alex had ordered for his garage and walked over to the shelves that Alex had hung up on the walls. I started to place certain nuts and bolts in certain boxes depending on the labels.
“Oh Hayden I got my tie by the way” Jason said whilst putting his box on the floor and pulling his phone out of his pocket. He showed me a picture of him wearing a black suit paired with a black skinny tie. “Is that ok?”
“Ye” I said nodding. I turned around to carry on sorting some of the bolts out.
“Wait Hayden has her prom dress... why haven’t we seen this?” I heard Blake say from behind me.
“Because...” I shrugged.
“That’s not fair I think we should all get to see you in it” Blake said pouting.
“Put it one way Blake she’s looks beautiful” Becki said whilst walking in carrying another box. I slightly blushed at her comment.
“Becki’s seen it and I haven’t” I rolled my eyes at him.
“I’ve gotta say all the guys will want to dance with her” Holly said.
“And Holly too... has Scott seen it?” Blake said acting like he was 5 years old.
“Hey it’s not just me Becki’s got her dress too” I said trying to move the spotlight off of me and onto Becki.
“Do we get to see that?” Blake asked.
“Urm let me think about that... No” She said before starting to sort out the stock in her box.
“You know you girls’ aren’t fair” Blake said sitting down on one of the boxes which automatically collapsed making him fall on to the floor. We all started to laugh at him so much that some of us ended up on the floor and the others had tears coming from their eyes.
“That’s the cutest tantrum I’ve ever seen” Holly said whilst patting Blake’s head. He quickly shook Holly’s hand off of his head and stood up.
“Oh you think that’s cute” He said. He quickly wrapped his arms around Holly and lifted her up in the air and started to spin her around.
“Blake put me down” she said whilst laughing.
“So what colours your dresses?” Jamie asked from behind me and Becki.
“Mine’s a kind of stretched leopard print” Becki said.
“Mine’s red” I said smiling at him.
“Guys guys guys come on” Alex said jogging into the garage. We all looked at each other and laughed before going outside and carrying in more boxes full of stock and tools and other essential things.
When we had managed to finish unpacking all of the boxes we all decided to just lay out in the sun on the grass behind the garage. I was so happy that school was closed today due to a problem with the water within the school and also the air conditioning wasn’t working meaning that all the students and teachers got today off meaning that our weekend started a day early.
“How does going back to my house and hanging around the track sound?” Scott asked us all. I lifted myself up on my elbows and looked at Scott whilst placing my right hand over my eyes.
“Ye alright I’m in” I said. Everyone agreed to it and we decided that we would also have a barbeque. When we decided to leave Blake, Jamie and Becki drove to Wakeside grocery store to grab some burgers, hot dogs and other food that we could have whilst me, Scott, Jake and Holly went to Scott’s house. Jason had told us that he was staying at a friend’s tonight and that his friend’s house was only within walking distance of Alex’s garage.
When we arrived Scott led us all straight towards the garden. “Let’s go get the go-karts” Scott said whilst leading us all to a kind of shed. When he opened it I saw four go-karts all parked up with two at the front and two behind them.
“Wow” I said.
“Right Holly, Hayden you take the first two and me and Jake will take the last two.” Scott said.
I climbed into the front one and looked at the fuel gauge to make sure the go-kart would be able to run and was surprised to find it full. Scott walked to the back of my go-kart and pulled the pull start cord which caused the go-kart to start rumbling to life. I pressed my foot down on the accelerator and drove out of the garage and down the pathway, specifically for the go-karts, towards the race track. I pulled up on the start line and turned around to find Holly, Jake and Scott all following. They pulled up at the side of me.
“Alright then 1 lap around loser cooks the food” Scott shouted to us over the noise of the engines. We all looked at each other and nodded. I turned to my left to find Jake smiling at me.
“Game on” he mouthed.
“Bring it” I said just before Scott shouted go making me press my foot onto the accelerator as far as I could. My go-kart moved forward quickly. We were all in one line at first until we hit the first corner. We all drifted round in one line until I took my foot off of the break and pushed down straight away on the accelerator which made me take the lead. I quickly looked behind me and saw Jake’s go-kart really close to mine and Holly not too far ahead. Scott was right at the back and you could see the determination on his face.
About half way through the race Holly started to come up quickly behind me therefore when it came to the corner I made sure I drifted it so then Holly couldn’t get past me any other way. It was coming up to the last two corners and I could see a bumper slowly come into my vision out of the corner of my eye. I turned to my right quickly and saw Jake there smiling at me until his go-kart suddenly jumped forward. I turned to see Holly banging her go-kart into Jake’s with an innocent smile on her face.
“HOLLY JONES” Jake shouted. I started to laugh and ended up taking first place as they were too focused on trying to get each other of the track meaning they both drew second place and Scott came last. I flicked the kill switch when I reached the starting line again and climbed out. I walked over to the grass at the side and waited for the guys.
“Damn girl your fast” Holly said whilst walking over to me. “I think we have a future driver” she said smiling at me.
“I know” Jake said whilst wrapping his arm around my shoulders. I actually can’t believe these guys thought I was good enough to be a driver for the Cobras. I blushed at their compliments.
“Thank you” I said.
“Hey did I say the loser cooks I meant the winner” Scott said as he approached us.
“Ooooo I don’t think so mister” I said to him.
“Oh really last one to the porch cooks then” he said.
“Not fair” I said. He knew I was no good at P.E. We both took off and when I reached the porch I was kind of shocked that I hadn’t lost my breath at all. Also, I drew with Scott but I think he would have beaten me if he had run properly.
“Fine I’ll cook” Scott said rolling his eyes but smiling at me. He walked over to me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. We walked up the steps that lead to the decking and Scott started the barbeque with Jake whilst me and Holly lay on the decking.
“FOOD’S HERE” We heard Jamie shout from inside the house.
“BEER’S HERE” Blake shouted. I rolled my eyes at him. Jamie and Becki carried in at least 4 bags filled with all sorts of different food whilst Blake carried in two boxes of beer and placed then on the garden table.
After us lying in the sun for a while and the guys cooking the food we all sat around the garden table talking and eating. I could see Holly staring in the direction of Blake with glazed over eyes.
“You know Holly if you want me that bad you don’t have to dream about me you can just ask” Blake said. Holly shook her head at him.
“I’m alright thanks” she said.
“Come on guys I wanna race” Scott sulked at the side of me.
“Come on then what you waiting for?” I said standing up. I started to make my way towards the race track with the rest of the guys. When we got there we decided that all the guys would race and then all the girls. We watched the guys’ race and all of them drift round the corners. I’ve got to say they were all fast but I could see what Jake meant when he said he could handle his speed more compared to the other guys. For example when he drifted round one of the corners it was smooth and he had full control but when Jamie or Blake would try it at the same speed they would just lose it for a matter of a second meaning Scott could take advantage of this.
Obviously, Jake won with Scott second and Blake third with Jamie following last but I have to say they all went over the finish line one after the other, seeing as their go-kart bumper would be about the same level as the side of the person in front of them.
“Right girls let’s see what you got” Blake said as the guys walked over to us.
“Winner races Jake” Scott said as we all climbed into the go-karts. I smiled at Becki and Holly whilst waiting for the flag to be waved to start the race. When Scott waved the flag I pressed my foot down on the accelerator straight away and got a bit of a head start to Becki but Holly had done the exact same. I could see the first corner coming closer and closer and this corner would depend on who took the lead of the race. I decided to try something that I had seen in some of the films and see if it would work. As we came closer and closer to the corner I touched the breaks which meant Holly was ahead but when it came to the corner I took her on the inside meaning I took the lead.
“WOW GO HAYDEN” I heard one of the guys shout.
I carried on drifting smoothly round the corners throughout the race but kept tight to the inside of the corners so Holly couldn’t overtake me. As I was on the last stretch of the track I could see the finishing line coming up. I quickly turned around to see Holly coming up behind me. I could see she was in her racing mood at the moment and she had a determined look in her eyes to try and overtake me but I wasn’t going to give in that easily. I crossed over the finish line taking first place closely followed by Holly and then Becki. I climbed out and high fived all of the guys except Jake as I knew I had to race him now. Holly came over to me and high fived me.
“Well done and I gave that my all as well... Good luck Jake” She said turning to smile at him.
“Come on let’s race” Jake said smiling at me. I laughed and walked towards the go-karts with him. I climbed into the go-kart I had just been racing in. “HEY” Jake shouted to me. I turned to my right to see him in line with me. “How about we make a bet?” That sounded quite interesting.
“Alright then what’s the bet?”
“If I win you cook for me for a whole week, you win I cook for you for a whole week... How about that?” He said. I thought about it for a while.
“Ye but you know I can’t cook right” I said. “You’ll be living off of beans on toast or cheese on toast” He shrugged.
“You better win then” He said. I shook my head and faced forward.
“Right you ready guys” Scott said holding the racing flag. I nodded at him. “GO” I pressed my foot on the accelerator quickly which Jake seemed to do as well. I tried to use the same technique as what I had used with Holly to try and take the lead after the first corner but this time it didn’t work. Damn...
Jake’s POV
I saw her slow down slightly as we approached the first corner and knew she was going to try and do the same to me as what she had done to Holly. When I drifted the corner I accelerated straight away and got the lead. I’ve got to say Hayden is good at this I was trying my hardest and she was keeping up usually when I was racing the guys I had won before we even started. I carried on turning all of the corners and Hayden somehow managed to come into line with me. We were just reaching the last corner and I know I shouldn’t have done it but I did. I pressed my foot on the breaks a little bit longer than I should have meaning that Hayden got the lead and won the race. When I crossed the finish line I saw Scott smiling at me as he knew straight away what I had done.
“Looks like your cooking for me for a week” she said when she climbed out.
“Looks like it” I said.
Everyone started to congratulate Hayden as we walked back towards the house after we put the go-karts away.
“How strange that Hayden had just beaten THE sparkler... the guy that has won every car and go-kart race since he was 13” I turned to look at him to see him smiling.
“Shut up” I said before pushing him away from me.
“Do you know what I’ve never seen you like this... it’s funny seeing my best friend in lloovvee” I rolled my eyes at him.
“I’m not in love”
“Right whatever you say. She seems like a good driver though”
“She is I was driving at my usual speed up until the last corner”
“Are you being serious?” I nodded. “And she kept up with you... wow”
When we reached the house we all sat in the living room and watched Never Back Down. Hayden was sat very close to me as we all tried sitting on the part of the couch that faces the TV directly. Therefore, Hayden was sat in one of the corners and I was sat right next to her with her feet on my lap.
“Hey shall I drop you and Becki off now?” I whispered to Hayden as the credits on the film were rolling. She nodded and started to stand up before losing her balance. I quickly caught her waist and gently pushed her up so then she could stand up.
“Thank you” She mumbled whilst turning around. I saw her cheeks turn a shade of red which made her even more beautiful. I stood up and reached in my pocket for my keys. After everyone had hugged Hayden and Becki, we made our way towards the front door which I opened for them both. I climbed into the driver’s side and looked at the clock on the dashboard and saw it was 11:30.
“Becki your parents are going to kill me” I said looking in the mirror at her as I turned onto the main road that led into Haywood.
She shrugged “it doesn’t matter I’ll be surprised if they know that I’m out” she said whilst looking out of the window.
As I carried on driving I couldn’t help but think about Hayden and how happy I was that the guys had accepted her so easily. I liked how Holly now had a friend who wasn’t one of the guys. I pulled up in front of Becki’s house.
“Goodnight guys” she said.
“Goodnight Becki” me and Hayden said before she closed the door. I carried on driving towards Hayden’s house.
“Have you ever been on a go-kart before?” I asked curiously. I mean she must have to have been that good.
“No not really that was my first time” Was she actually being serious?
“Seriously?” I asked shocked. She must be lying about that.
“Seriously” She said laughing that contagious laugh of hers.
“Wow... you were really really good for it being your first time” I said. I couldn’t believe it. When I pulled up in front of her house she turned to look at me.
“Right next week will be ok with me for you cooking if that’s ok?” she asked with a smile on her face. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“That’s fine” I said before leaning over and kissing her cheek. “Goodnight”
“Goodnight” she said before kissing my cheek and climbing out. I waited until she closed the front door to make sure she got in the house ok. I pulled away and started to drive home whilst thinking up meals that I can cook next week for Hayden. I parked my car into the garage and climbed out. I locked the garage up and walked outside towards the main entrance door. As I opened the door I felt something hard hit the back of my head. I felt my back suddenly hit the floor and when I looked up I saw two blurry figures stood over me. I tried to see if I could see the faces of the two people but couldn’t see anything as dots started to appear in my vision. I blinked a couple of times to try and get rid of them but it just made them appear more frequently until my eyes closed and sent me into a pit of darkness.
