A green-haired vampire wandered into the vicinity of a public school, idle students chattering away as they pleased in the front lawn.

More of them entered the gates either in groups, with a friend or completely alone. He was one of those people categorized as loners in this school, with his pink headphones worn over his ears.

He was recognized as the kind of kid who no one would rather associate themselves with.

Well, that was better.

It was way too good of a news to hear, and he'd preferred it rather than finding a friend whom he would be forced to leave sooner or later because of unfortunate circumstances.

He chuckled.

How could he be so hung up over a dead person?

Besides, he'd have to weave up another lie to get atleast an acquaintance. He was already fabricating pieces of baseless dialogues just to be able to live among others normally.

Who wouldn't label him crazy and send him to an asylum if he were to jump at someone and tell them he was a vampire? In this day and age wherein computers and the internet were the rulers of the country, vampires were nothing more than a sort of interesting subject to add into a supernatural teenage novel.

He felt sick.

These clueless people were using such fearsome beings of existence as entertainment material. Bloodsuckers usually apppeared as the female lead role's cool partner, or an over-sexualized group of female vampires crowding around a perfectly normal guy with delicious blood.

What kind of reads were these?

They didn't even know how the true faces of these creatures were, yet they carelessly watched movies and anime with a handful vampires involved like squealing pigs who saw a rare vegetable.

Sakuya knew he wasn't going to gain anything from complaining with intense resentment towards naive humans, so he simply sighed and headed for his classroom.

The people who knew him simply by name and face instantly cleared the way to let him pass. His gaze wasn't reluctant, and it seemed as though he'd not hesitate to castrate someone if they ticked him off. He probably would do that, but avoiding trouble as much as he could came as a first priority.

He didn't even know why his classmates had come to fear him after the first day, but it was probably because he didn't even bother to introduce himself. He won in intensity against the terror teacher, and thus, his legendary life as a cliché, feared student started. Yay.

He didn't know why he decided to enroll for another school. This was his second time entering one as a vampire. Despite his first experience not being so good, he found the idea of leisurely spending his days as a studying slave drawing him in for some reason.

What was it?

Being around people meant being around lies. And he despised incorrect facts. So what was he doing? If ever he was clinging on to something, what was it?

Because it hasn't been long since the schoolyear started, there weren't any non-individual works required yet. So he met no trouble so far.

But seeing as it was a class, it had to happen at some point. Unfortunately, that point was revolving around the clock right now.

"Watanuki Sakuya, Yumikawa Hiruma, Okazaki Yukiko, Habashira Seryuu. The four of you will work on this project as a group."

The other students in the classroom thanked the teacher's random teaming from the bottom of their hearts. They didn't want to associate themselves with the fancy-haired, red-eyed dude.

Among his group members, the two females seemed to be wary of him, though, the male simply grinned at him and waved. He knew he shouldn't be thinking such stuff at a time where he had finished willing himself to forget about his foolishness in the past, but this person, Yumikawa Hiruma, was very much familiar.

So fucking familiar that it stung his eyes a little bit.

---

As the afternoon bell rang, Sakuya collected his bag from the hook on his table and moved over to the lockers in no rush. He didn't have to wait for the other students to move, or squeeze into a single file with them.

He repelled them naturally, so he could loiter around the hallways with ease.

Just as he finished up with switching to his outdoor shoes, a hand landed on his back with a heavy slap. He stumbled forward slightly, his headphones falling off his neck, and to the floor.

As he readied himself to glare at whoever caused his headphones' possible death, a light but audible gasp reached his ears, followed by a barrage of apologies.

"Ah, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" The person known as Yumikawa Hiruma bent over to pick up the fallen device. "Oh no, I hope it ain't damaged. . . man, I need to be a tad bit more careful next time. Here."

He handed the headphones to Sakuya, shrinking back with an apologetic look. He glanced back at his classmate's face from time to time, probably concerned about his first impression on such a serious fellow.

Sakuya simply shrugged, taking his belongings back and moving to leave. Suddenly, the kid's voice stopped him.

"Hey, I'm really sorry about that, but I came here to invite you over to a fast food so we can discuss our project together with those two ladies. I think they were classmates since junior highschool, so they're in the tennis club together." Hiruma started changing shoes, and dragged the green-haired male by the arm straight after. "Club activities would take a while, but I've already informed them beforehand so we can go ahead and wait for them."

"What?" Sakuya mused, eyeing the other individual's hand on his wrist tiredly.

"I mean, it's gonna be rude if we'd make them wait for us, so let's go on standby for them instead! Hurry up, Sakuya!"
As if realizing he was being way too familiar with a new acquaintance, Yumikawa followed it up flawlessly.

"You can call me Hiruma from now on, too. Nice to meet you, by the way!" He looked back, that same grin he showed in the classroom plastered on his face.

He was way too loudmouthed and chatty for his own good, and it made him seem like a local housewife being involved in the neighbor's gossip. But surprisingly, Sakuya didn't even recoil in annoyance.

He went with the flow.

---

A

s they sat facing each other in the fast food chain, Hiruma played with the ice in his cup while Sakuya simply stared out the window.

A little while ago, the light drizzle turned into a heavy downpour, reminding him of his nutjob of a master who disappeared all too suddenly after his plans for starting a war got completely crushed.

He had no clue about what happened to him or his other subclasses, but he was sure as hell he didn't care.

Or atleast, he didn't want to care.

It hurt him so. Caring about people who kept lying, that is. He did understand, everyone had reasons, but whatever those were, he wished he knew. He was tired of being kept in the dark, then finding out his world had already taken a much darker route by the time he stepped out of his hiding place.

Everyone was such huge liars. . .

"Oh, right. Say, Sakuya."

His dangerous train of thoughts was interrupted by the person who dragged him to this place to, apparently, start a discussion about their project. Though whatever he had been spouting for the last thirty minutes wasn't even related to scienctific processes.

"It's probably gonna be awkward after I ask you about this but. . . where are your parents? Haven't seen them in the opening ceremony too. . ." he dragged out the last syllable longer, seeing as his fancy-haired classmate's expression turned quite sour.

"Uh, it's fine if you don't--"
"They're dead."
"I-I'm sorry--"
"Good riddance."

Silence hovered above the both of them for a few seconds, the only sound being the chatter of other customers and that standard noise which never disappears in fast-food chains.

In a moment, Hiruma was leaning over the table, his paling face moving closer towards Sakuya's own, as if he'd wanted them to switch faces or something.

"How could you say such a thing? No wonder you don't have any friends, Sakuya-kun!"
He panicked, exaggerating his worry over his new acquaintance's state of mind.

"It must have been so awful that you've put up this wall around you as a defensive mechanism, right?!"
"You're wrong. . . And you're drawing attention with all that shouting."

Embarrassed, Yumikawa Hiruma flopped back down on his seat under the gaze of the other people dining.

"S-so, as I was saying. . ." he suddenly seemed serious, his eyes meeting Sakuya's having a glint of recognition. "It must have been lonely, right?"

Memories of his sister and their disgusting upbringing hit him back all too suddenly, that the impact was harder than it ever had been. Those times he spent with Shirota Mahiru and all his other classmates back in the days added up to it, making him grit his teeth involuntarily.

Seeing as he awakened unpleasantries, Hiruma panicked and started to look around him, as if he'd see a random bulletin board filled with nice words to say.

". . . Sakuya, you're lonely, aren't you?" He asked again, this time, moving into the same side to take a seat beside the other individual.

"That's not a very good thing. You see, loneliness is like a drug. It shows up in your hands when you're in trouble. It's very addictive. And once you feel the peacefulness that isolation has to offer, you'd never want to associate yourself with other people ever again.

"You're undergoing the phase of being addicted to it." He mused, his voice barely above a whisper, as if it had been coming from somewhere distant. Something about him made Sakuya feel uneasy, but secure at the same time. It wasn't something one would feel when being around guidance counselors, but it was as if Yumikawa Hiruma had been his friend for a good amount of time.

"What are you talking about?" He inquired, trying to sound irritated. He flinched. It was one of those few occasions when he would fail to fabricate his emotions to what he wanted them to morph into.

Yet this person, no, Yumikawa Hiruma, continued, as if he hadn't heard anything. As if he knew so many things that even Sakuya had come to forget about. That was probably true. No, it was true.

"But you aren't totally consumed by the false relief it has in store, are you? There's a tiny thread you're clinging on to, that keeps you from falling into the void of being alone for the rest of your life.

"Cliché as it might sound, you're still hoping. For those people who abandoned you to come back, for everyone to still keep being your friend despite the odds."

Ah, that's it.

He resembled Shirota Mahiru in a way that made Sakuya's eyes sting a little bit.

Nope, he was definitely Shirota Mahiru, wishing to still be Sakuya's friend even if it meant living another life he couldn't predict.

"Some things are meant to go, but we do have to empty in order to fill. So in that case, Watanuki Sakuya, how about being friends with me?" Yumikawa Hiruma grinned, a happy expression that could make one's emotional stability waver. A happy expression that contained so much pain.

Everything happened all too quickly, but Sakuya didn't find a reason not to adapt to the change. It was his way of living ever since he stepped out from the zone of being humane.

He wanted to frown and cry and rant in frustration, shove his newfound companion away from him as he told him he wanted solitude, but he didn't. That wasn't how he acted around his friends.

His small smile turned into a full one as he started to laugh with genuine amusement, surprising Hiruma who had never seen him show such heightened emotions. Sakuya put a hand to his forehead and lay his elbow on the table, supporting his head.

As his outburst subsided, leaving the other customers to chatter amongst themselves once again, he faced Yumikawa Hiruma with an expression he hadn't had a reason to wear ever since it all started to fall apart once more.

"Now, how much of what I said was a lie?"

As the doors opened to reveal their two other group members, Okazaki Yukiko and Habashira Seryuu, Sakuya and this person, no, Yumikawa Hiruma, laughed over silly banters which only true friends over the ages could understand.

if someone else would have written this, i bet it'd have been better, good enough to get the feels train chugging. but i can't do dat. *feels the feels of not being able to write cry-worthy pieces*

btw

if you haven't noticed. . .

Hiruma = Mahiru

Yukiko = Koyuki

Seryuu = Ryuusē

i didn't expect the naming to go that well, tbh, lmao. I didn't think switching up the characters in their names could make totally new ones. tho sadly, koyuki and ryuuse had to be girls mwahaha--//killed
