It was dark, yet it was all clear to someone with eyes that were trained to spot anything in the dark. The door to the library flew open and he heard raucous laughter. Brilliant. He was drunk. I hated it when they were drunk. It made my job a lot easier but it took those drunken fools some time to figure out that they would be dead in less than five seconds.

My ears tingled slightly as I heard a different noise. A whimper.

I smiled. Perfect. So the drunken fool wouldn’t see it coming but the woman he had dragged in with him would. I moved stealthily towards the noise.

I felt myself shiver in anticipation. One more kill count and I’d get my seventh tattoo. Just then, I heard another whimper. Maybe I should let the drunken idiot enjoy his last few moments.

“If you utter a word, you know the consequences.”

I frowned. So it wasn’t consensual? Oh well. Time to crash this party. I heard the ruffle of clothes right then and knew I wasn’t alone. I pressed myself back against the wall, looking around. Another person couldn’t have escaped my vision.

I nearly growled in frustration. I had to take him now. There he was, that lecherous bastard, bending someone over a table. My eyes widened slightly. A boy.

I darted towards them, moving silently, unnoticed due to his drunken stupor. I hissed quietly when I passed them both. The man immediately stumbled backwards, looking around.

“Is someone there?”

It was the same reaction, as usual. I found it amusing how they thought we’d deign them with a response. The boy he had bent over the table looked around, wildly. He tried to pull his pants back up but the man stopped him.

“Don’t you dare move. Lay back down.”

My lips curled in disgust. Such subordination was appalling. Just then, the man decided there was no one around. He turned back to the boy and ripped his shirt off. I darted back out of the corner, towards them, pulling out my dart. As I passed the man, I inserted it in the back of his neck and pulled it out, just as fast.

He slapped at his neck and then slowly began spinning.

“Wha-what?”

The boy immediately grabbed his shirt and pulled it on. “Mister Greg?”

I shook my head slightly. I smiled slightly when I noticed the boy kicked his uncle slightly as he lay on the floor, dead. The boy staggered back as he realized.

He looked around wildly, “Who sent you?”

Oh. He was smart. He knew that wasn’t just a random heart attack.

He continued, “You just killed Greg Reynolds, one of the world’s richest men.”

I yawned. You don’t say? I did do my research, give me some credit. I don’t go around killing a person every other night.

I heard the faint rustle of clothing again. My eyes snapped back towards the door and I nearly hit myself.

Jade Ekans.

She stepped out of the shadows and slowly walked towards the boy. He stood up straighter as he watched her. I don’t blame him. Jade was a striking woman. I just wasn’t interested. She wasn’t my type. Or rather, girls in general, weren’t my type.

Jade sang quietly, “Nicky, come out to play.”

I froze. How did she know?

Time to throw my voice.

“It’s Britney, bitch.”

Her head snapped to the north-west corner, where she thought I was. Ah, the art of Ventriloquism was never wasted on me.

It gave me enough time to surprise attack her.

I held my famous poisoned blade at her neck and she raised her hands, “You never fail to amuse me. What was it, last time?”

“My name is Sam and I don’t like green eggs and ham.”

She giggled, “How have you been?”

“What do you want, Jade?”

Suddenly, she kicked her legs out, throwing me off-balance. I immediately turned to dart away but she caught my arm.

“You can run but you can’t hide. Oh wait, you can’t run either.”

She straddled me, pointing her own blade against my neck, “I gave you a deadline. I waited for my answer. You never came.”

I smirked, “Binging on doughnuts again? You’re a lot heavier.”

Jade slapped me hard. It was worth it, though. She was never as stealthy as me.

I sang, “Hit me baby, one more time!”

“Your Britney obsession is really annoying me.”

“Your obsession with me is really annoying.”

“Why won’t you date me!?”

I glared at her. She was really annoying me now. Assassins are supposed to be cold, calculating and intelligent. Not annoying hormonal teenagers. Perhaps this is why the guild keeps us away from the older Assassins. I can’t wait till I get moved to the other guild.

“Jade. I have no interest in girls.”

Why did she not get that I was gay? A Britney obsession should have been pretty obvious!

“Your heart is made of stone! Which is why, my Father has decided to shift you to our guild.”

I laughed, “Yeah, right. I’m not moving there. I’m going straight to Arabia.”

“I’m serious. Why do you think he sent me and one of our best Assassins?”

I snorted, “I’m the best teen Assassin. I could take you and the other Assassin on.”

Jade snarled, “That’s exactly why Father has requested you to be moved immediately. You’re too cold for a teenager. Too proud to think straight.”

I narrowed my eyes at her, “Take that back, Jade. I’ve always gone easy on you.”

“You killed the wrong man.”

I felt myself grow cold, “Nonsense. That kid over there said I killed Greg Reynolds. My target was Greg Reynolds. I never miss.”

Suddenly, the boy sitting on the table, coughed, “Maybe you should have looked twice.”

I looked at the man carefully. That’s when I noticed the mole on his left cheek. Greg Reynolds had a clear face.

A body double. I killed his body double. I snarled, pushing Jade off me, “I’M GOING TO KILL HIM.”

Jade laughed, “Too late. I’ve already done that.”

I pointed at the boy who was smiling smugly, “He has to die.”

Jade crossed her arms, “What boy?”

I looked at the table and nearly screamed in frustration. Where did he go?

Suddenly, I felt someone on my back, “How does it feel to get played, Mr. I-Am-So-Much-Cooler-Than-Ice?”

That cold feeling of dread washed over me again, “Jade. You tricked me.”

Jade shook her head slightly, “Your pride tricked you. You just wanted that Seventh Tattoo.”

I began shaking slightly. The boy jumped off me, “Looks like he’s going to go batshit crazy on us.”

I growled, “I’m going to be laughed at. Do you realize what your little prank will cost me? It’ll take me YEARS to get to Arabia.”

Jade rolled her eyes, “Arabia is for losers. Our new guild is in Italy.”

“I quit.”

Both of them stared at me, startled.

Jade whispered, “You can’t quit, Nicolas.”

I grimaced at the use of my whole name, “Watch me, Ekans.”

“My Father will drag you back. He won’t let you go. You’re one of our best!”

I smirked, “You should have thought of that before.”

Jade reached towards me but I jumped away.

I smiled innocently, “Oh, hey. Jade?”

She growled, “Do not do this, Nick. Your pride was always a huge problem but this is ridiculous.”

I grabbed the boy and pulled his face towards mine.

He looked at me startled, “What are you-”

I shut him up by pressing my lips to his. He mumbled something and then suddenly began kissing me back. I bit his lower lip slightly and then pushed him away.

Jade stared at me, her eyes wide.

“And THAT is why, I’d never date you.”

Then, using my absolutely fantastic element of surprise, I threw a red pill to the ground and crushed it. Immediately, it blew up, creating tons of red smoke. I jumped out through the window and ran out into the night.

As I ran, I began stripping myself of my many pieces of clothing. I was leaving a trail, to make this more exciting. I could hear twigs snapping behind me, which meant they were catching up.

Too bad, I had my ride waiting. As we kept running through the forest, I smiled. I was just waiting for them to bang into a tree or trip over a shrub. I knew where every tree was located in here. I had spent two weeks just running around, making sure I had various exit routes.

They foiled one of my biggest assassination attempts. It meant a lot to me. So what if I was proud? It wasn’t wrong. Getting my seventh tattoo had been exactly what I needed to move to Arabia. Far away from this modern world. Back into the days of Poison darts and snakes. The good old Assassin days. I wasn’t going to wait for another ten years. I was eighteen now. The younger you are, the better your stamina and movement. All of it was ruined.

I noticed the wall up ahead and sped up. I quickly ran up a tree stump, jumped across to another tree branch and then hopped over the wall. I stood on top of the wall, staring down triumphantly at Jade and the new kid as they ran towards me. Jade tripped over the shrubbery, just as I expected her to.

The new kid looked around, for some way to get up to me.

I sighed, “Such a shame. You’re cute, you know.”

I noticed him blushing. I grinned, “Not a bad kisser either. We could have been an amazing team.”

“So, don’t go. Stay.”

“That’s cute, kid.”

I saw him clench his fists, “Shut up! I’m not a kid.”

“Maybe, if you whimper for me, like you did back then, I’ll consider staying.”

He glared at me, “That was just acting. I’m not a weak child.”

“I thought you were a girl when I heard you whimper.”

I tried not to laugh as I saw how easily it was to make him mad.

“I’m going to find you. And when I do, I’m going to make YOU whimper.”

I laughed, “Oooo, I’m so scared!”

“You better be!”

I fake shivered, “Oooo, I’m shivering!”

“I’m going to make you regret running away.”

I rolled my eyes, “Sure, kid. See you around. Not.”

“It’s DANIEL! You remember that!”

I just jumped off the wall, landing on my feet like a cat. I walked towards the Taxi, waiting for me at the Curb.

As I got in, I said, “International Airport, please.”

Then, relaxing as I left my entire life behind, I sighed.

After living a life in the shadows, sunny California, here I come.
