When school lets out, you meet me in the parking lot. The air smells like sunlight, and you look like heaven. The flowers are all dry now; your eyes are clear and bright. As we slip into your car, you stare at me with such intensity I worry you can see my heart. I ask you what's wrong, and you smile. I look into your eyes for a long time. For a moment, nothing is wrong: the world is beautiful and pure and sweet. When my eyes dance to your lips I can taste honey and roses. Before I lean in, I hear her. She is bright and shrill, like citrus. She kisses you, and I can almost taste it before I look away. We drive to the beach and she talks the whole way.
