prologue
I put the pen down. My hand hurts from writing so intently and long. My body aches. My throats dry. Surprisingly, I'm not scared. I'm calm, my heart rate even.
Folding the letter perfectly, I tuck it in the small envelope, sealing it close with a lick of my tongue. On it, I write two letters. SM.
The pills are sorted into two nice rows, four in each. Eight in all. Eight sleeping pills.
I start placing them on my tongue, one at a time, swallowing them dry. They go down like gravel, making me wince.
Laying down on my bed, a calmness sets over me like a blanket. I feel like I could be anywhere, in an ocean, in the desert at night, looking up at the stars.
