Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows

Adrianne

We made our way to Donovan's in silence, holding hands as he drove.

I looked out the window and watched the flat terrain pass by.

I turned to look at his hand laced with mine. His nails were trimmed short and clean, his fingers long.

How did this even happen?

A small smile tugged on my lips as I thought of the first time I saw him. The pulse of the music, the way his eyes stared at me, the first time he touched me...

I squeezed my thighs together, feeling a heartbeat in the lower part of my abdomen.

I eyes his neck, imagined myself biting it.

Oh my God, I want him. I've never wanted someone so badly.

"Are you nervous?"

"Huh?" I came out of my thoughts.

"You're squeezing."

I looked down at our hands again, seeing my knuckles turn white. I immediately released my grip, slipping my hand out of his and putting it in my lap.

"Sorry," I muttered.

He glanced at me, one brow raised.

"You okay?"

"Yep," I said, nodding and biting my lip.

He gave me a look.

"Really. I'm... I'm fine."

"Alright," he replied, lightly shrugging.

I looked down at my hands.

Why the fuck was I so horny?

I took a deep breath, allowing myself to look at him again.

I gazed at his hair, his facial features, the curve of his strong jawline, his Adam's apple that stuck out, the shape of his arms and chest underneath his shirt, the way his hands held the steering wheel...

My eyes stopped at his belt buckle. His shirt ride up a little, exposing the small trail of dirty blonde hair that I knew touched his bellybutton.

Jesus. Fuck.

He pulled into a driveway, and I whipped my eyes away from him.

Completely oblivious to how horny I was, he shut off the car and turned to face me.

"You ready?"

I nodded, unbuckling my seatbelt.

I need to get a few feet away before I start humping him.

We walked up the driveway, and he slung his arm around my waist, giving me a quick peck on the side of my tenple.

I looked to see the garage had two couches and a tv set up on the wall, and a set of drums and a microphone with speakers were on the other side of the room. A string of lights were hung from the cieling, and the faint smell of beer reached me.

There were two guys sitting down on one of the couches. One of them was tan with a buzzcut, a guitar in his lap. The other one was darker, almost the color of coffee, and was on his phone.

"Hey, guys," Reece said.

They both looked up, and the one with the guitar dropped his jaw. The other one saw his mouth open and smacked his arm.

"Sean, didn't your mother ever tell you how rude it is to open your mouth?" He chuckled, sticking his hand out to me.

"Lucas."

I made sure I used my nonbandaged hand to grab his, and I shook it with a smile.

"Adrianne."

Sean gave me a quick wave before glancing at Reece. "You know, we totally thought Donny was fucking around when he said you were bringing someone."

A door off to the back opened with a creaking sound, and a kid with wavy brown hair stepped in. He was a little taller than me, and had a large tattoo covering most of his left arm. He came up, smiling.

"Hey. Adrianne, right?" He reached out, and I grabbed his hand to shake it lightly.

"Yeah," I replied.

"Donovan." He smiled, letting go of my hand. "Sorry it's such a sausage party in here. Some other people should show up soon."

I smiled at his joke.

"You want something to drink?"

"Oh, just water, please."

He nodded and headed over to a fridge that I hadn't noticed before.

"Hey, Reece, you want a beer?"

"Yeah."

Donovan came back over, handing us our bottles. Reece took my hand and lead me to the couch, and we all sat down to face the tv.

I watched Reece open his beer with expertise, and take a big swig.

"Are you an alcoholic?" I joked with a raised brow. He leaned forward to speak into my ear, a playful smile on his lips.

"Not yet, princess."

Hey, guys, I'd like to make a little toast," Donny suddenly said, holding up his beer.

I heard Sean and Lucas both groan, and Donny rolled his eyes in response. I raised my water bottle along with their beers.

"For being great people, and for landing our first hit. Couldn't have done it without any of you guys."

They all clicked their bottles and took a big swig while I sipped on my water.

Reece leaned back, putting his arm around my shoulders. I kept my hands in my lap, not allowing myself to touch him.

"So how long has this been going on? He never mentioned you before," Donny said to me. Lucas and Sean were busy discussing something about a tv show behind him.

"I just didn't want to jinx it," Reece said, shrugging.

Donovan smiled. "So then how'd you guys meet?"

"Oh, just a friend of a friend," I said quickly. I did not want to think about the strip club right now.

"Yeah. It was at a club. She's a great dancer." Reece nudged me, a huge grin on his face.

I scoffed to hide my redness and smacked his arm lightly.

Donovan suddenly looked behind us, and I turned to see two other guys and a girl walking up the driveway.

The two guys looked similar, both with dark hair and strong noses. The taller one had a full set of tattoos running down his arms, and had one of his hands intertwined with the girl that was with them. She had long black hair and deep eyes.

The shorter guy, however, had naked arms and was standing off to the side.

"Hey, guys," Donny said. He got up and greeted all of them, then turned to us.

"This is my older brother Mike and his girlfriend Katy," he said, pointing to the guy with sleeves and the girl, "and this is my little brother Gabe."

They all waved at us and we said hello.

Donny clapped his hands together and rubbed them, his eyes lit up with excitement.

"Alright, shitheads. Let's go set up."

Reece left me with a quick kiss on the cheek, and Lucas and Sean got up to follow him to the band setup.

Mike, Katy, and Gabe came over and sat down in the empty couch space. Mike and Katy were squished together, talking about something quietly while Gabe sat at the end, on his phone.

"How do you know them? We've never seen you here, have we?" Mike asked me.

"Oh, I'm... I'm with the blonde." I pointed to his head across the room.

"Reece? He never mentioned you."

I shrugged half heartedly. "Yeah, I'm... I'm new, I guess."

He smiled at me, but Katy spoke. "What happened to your hand?" She nodded to my bandage.

"Oh, I burned it when I was cooking," I said absentmindedly.

We made small talk while Reece and the guys got everything set up.

I heard some taps on a drum, and I turned to glance at them.

"One, two, three, four!" Donny said, and a loud 90's rock best can out oget the speakers, with Lucas and Sean both strumming as Donovan stood at the microphone.

A low beat panned out from the drums, and I smiled as I watched Reece. He had his eyes closed in concentration, and his lips were pressed into a thin line while his head lightly bobbed to the beat he was making.

Donovan started singing, his voice low and grumbly.

Shit, they're good.

I sat there and watched them play song after song, completely mesmerized. They looked so passionate about what they were doing, as if they really enjoyed it. I couldn't help but smile.

After they played a few more songs, they finally finished off with a slow song.

We all clapped, giving them a round of applause.

They set all of their stuff down and headed over to the couch.

"Amazing, darling," I heard Mike say jokingly to Donny when he came up.

Reece sat next to me, and I couldn't help but lace my fingers through his.

"You were great," I said.

He smiled, giving me a quick peck on the forehead.

Gabe suddenly spoke, and I peeled my eyes off Reece to look at him.

"You guys wanna order food?"

"Yes!" Sean immediately said.

Reece squeezed my hand, and I looked to see that he was studying me silently.

"You wanna get out of here?" He asked me in my ear, then nudged his head towards his car. His eyes had a glint in them that I couldn't resist.

I barely nodded, suddenly feeling nervous.

"You want anything, you guys?"

I looked to see that Sean was looking at us, waiting for an answer.

"I'm actually gonna take her home, guys." Reece's fingers squeezed mine as he spoke.

"You sure?" Donny asked.

I nodded. "Yeah, I have a test tomorrow."

We stood up, and I said goodbye to everyone with a wave. We turned to head down the driveway, but someone called out.

"Hey!" Lucas smiled.

"You gonna come watch us at our gig next week?"

"Of course," I said.

"See you there."

I turned back around, feeling Reece's arm go around me. We headed down the driveway in the dark, getting into Reece's car.

"What'd you think of the guys?" He asked as he turned the car on.

"They're cool. They're all really nice."

He smiled as he pulled out of the driveway and headed out of the neighborhood.

"Good. I know they like you, too."

"I'm glad they approve." His hand laced with mine, and I smiled. "Donny's really cool, too."

"Yeah... me and him are really close. We go way back. Been my best friend since high school."

"He's not jealous, is he?" I joked.

He laughed curly. "No, he's not like that."

I shrugged. "Well, he seems like he enjoys the band a lot, and that's good. You play good, by the way."

"You know what else I play good?" He wiggled a brow.

I saw a flash of yellow go by my window, and I felt my eyes being pulled towards it.

My heart pounded as I recognized the face and the long hair. I put my hand on the window.

"Stop!"

He slammed on the brakes, smoke spitting up from the tires. The car behind us beeped and swerved around, speeding off down the street.

"What? What happened? Are you okay? Are you hurt?" He asked, but I couldn't answer.

I was focused on the side of the road, searching for who I had seen.

Casey.

But she was gone.

I let out a big sigh, meeting his concerned eyes.

"I thought I saw someone. Just.. forget it. Keep driving."

He started down the road, again, his hands right on the wheel. He was breathing hard through his nose, and I could tell he had adrenaline rushing through him.

"Who?" He asked after a minute.

"It's no one."

"No. Tell me."

I sighed, looking at him. "It was a co-worker of mine. She got into some trouble with my manager. I was just trying to help her... but she never let me."

His grip loosened on the steering wheel. "I'm sorry."

"It's fine. I'm just worried about her. I haven't seen her in a while."

His hand reached over to mine and he grabbed it, rubbing his thumb over the top.

"I wouldn't overthink it. Some people don't want help. You have to wait for them to see that they need it."

I sighed, nodding. "Sorry for freaking you out."

He glanced at me, hiding a smirk. It felt like he was looking right through me. "You owe me."

"I do?"

He nodded, pulling into my driveway behind my mom's car.

"You know...." He parked, reaching over to brush his fingers against my cheek. I shivered.

"I was going to make you kiss me." He leaned forward, my heart pounding.

"But... I think I want to meet your mom."

I froze.

"What?"

"You heard me. You did say she'd like me."

He was still close to me, inching towards me with each second.

"Uhhh.. she doesn't... know about you." I muttered slowly.

"And why is that?" His mouth was very close to mine, and I could barely smell the beer he'd had earlier. My fingernails duh into the side of my seat.

I stuttered, unable to find words as his arm snaked around me. I heard the click of my seatbelt, feeling it come off.

"What-"

"Come on, princess."

He opened his door and got out, leaving me sputtering in the car to try to find a reply.

Seeing no other option, I scrambled out after him, following him to my front door.

"I mean, are you sure you want to?"

He stopped, facing me. "Why don't you want me to meet her?"

I took a deep breath, pausing. "It's not that I don't want that, I just... I've never been with someone like this. I don't know how she'll take it."

"I'll live." He pecked me on the forehead and turned away, completing the distance to my door.

I rolled my eyes, sticking the key in the lock.

"Does nothing make you nervous?" I asked, turning the key.

He paused, and I looked to see a dangerous glint in his eyes.

"Only you, Princess."

He opened the door and stepped in, not giving me time to respond. I closed the door behind me, standing next to him.

"Mom?" I called out, hoping she wouldn't answer.

"I'm in here," I heard her say from the kitchen.

Fuck.

I grabbed his arm and trudged to the kitchen, standing in the doorway. The smell of food reached me, and I felt my mouth water.

She was cooking?

I looked to see her standing in the kitchen, still dressed in her work clothes. She only had socks on her feet, and her hair was out of the bun it usually was in. She leaned over the stove, stirring something around in a pan.

I cleared my throat, and she looked up at me. I saw her eyes catch on something behind me, and I knew she was looking at Reece.

"Hi," I heard him say.

Shooting him a glare, I pulled on his arm and stepped into the kitchen.

"I wanted you to meet someone. This is Reece." I gestured to him with my hand out.

A small smile played on her face as he stepped forward and shook her hand.

"Nice to meet you," she said. She let go of his hand and looked at me. "She never mentioned you before."

"No?" He raised a playful brow at me, sticking his hands in his pockets. "That's a surprise."

I opened my mouth to fire back, but my mom spoke.

"Are you hungry? I made rice and beef if you want," she offered.

"Oh, no, I'm fine. I just ate a few hours ago, but thank you."

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.

"I just came to drop her off."

I smiled weakly at him, relieved he had said no.

"I should head home now, though. It was nice meeting you."

"Of course, Reece." She flashed him a smile.

He smiled, turning to me and pecking me on the cheek.

"See ya." He walked out, and I met my mom's brown eyes. They were amused, a small smirk on her lips.

"He's cute. Very cute."

I rolled my eyes, walking to her and giving her a hug. I looked down at the food on the pan, quickly reaching and picking a piece of meat off, popping it in my mouth.

"Yeah, he is."
