ENA'S POV

I had forgotten how boring school was.

After the bathroom incident with Elena and Jeremy I had contemplated going home but thought it best to at least make it through the first day back at high school. Especially because Jenna would have freaked if I had skipped.

'Once our home state of Virginia joined confederacy in 1861, it created a tremendous amount of tension within the state. People in Virginia's northwest region had different ideals than those from the traditional deep south. Then Virginia divided in 1863 with the northwest region joining the union,' Mr. Tanner's voice echoed throughout the history room.

He had to have the dullest voice that I had ever heard and yet we were forced to listen to him. Strangely, history was one of my favourite subjects but with Mr. Tanner as our teacher it was ultimately the worse class to be in.

I had taken the seat next to Elena and she had given me a small smile as I sat down. I wasn't sure if that meant that the argument in the mens room was now forgotten or if she was just playing nice.

During the lesson I heard Elena's phone go off and she checked it before handing it to me when Mr. Tanner wasn't looking.

From: BONNIE

HAWT-E. STARING @ U 2.

I could help but smile and hand the phone back. Elena turned around to come face to face with the new guy but was caught out as he looked back at her.

He was undeniably attractive with his chiseled features and his too cool for school leather jacket, but I couldn't help but notice the way he had looked at us. It was if he was looking at someone who he had known his whole life. There was a familiarity in his eyes that had alarmed me and made me weary of his presence.

Elena quickly looked to the front of the room and tried to hide her blushing face but it was no use; not to me anyway.

They would be cute together, I thought as I tuned out the rest of what Mr. Tanner had to say about the confederates.

Elena deserved a good guy and apparently Matt Donovan wasn't what she wanted anymore. Bonnie had told me on the way to class how Elena had dumbed Matt after I left due to the fact that she had wanted to be alone. I had only asked Bonnie about Matt as when I walked past him and waved hello, he had given me the strangest look before hurrying away.

Matt was a good guy, but he was also kind of boring and safe. No girl chose the safe and boring guy no matter how cute they were.

This new guy could be perfect for her; he was the mysterious new student and being mysterious was attractive. Not to mention that his overall attractiveness would make him the talk of the whole school, if not the whole town.

'Will you come to the cemetery with me today?' Elena asked me as we walked from the school grounds.

Bonnie had already left so I knew she would of needed a ride but I also wanted to see where my parents were buried and agreed to go.

'Where did you get this car?' Elena said as she sat in the passengers seat.

'It's belongs to a friend of mine.' I said nonchalantly.

Caroline had been the first to mention the car. I had bumped into her between classes and she had pulled me into an incredibly tight embrace. For such a small girl, she had a good amount of strength.

'And when were you going to tell me you were home?' she had said.

'Now,' I smirked.

'Better late then never, I suppose. By the way, nice set of wheels. Everyones been talking about it.'

The great thing about Caroline was that she didn't care about why I had left or where I had gone too. She was just glad that I was home. Caroline was in a lot of ways the most welcoming when it came to reunions but I knew her well enough to know that eventually she would tell me off for my actions.

My only hope was that when the time came, I would be able to listen to her ramblings with a straight face. Caroline Forbes when mad reminded me a puppy looking up at its owner as it begged for a treat. Not that there was anything wrong with that.

A little insecure and somewhat neurotic, but Care always had everyones best interests at heart. She was a one of kind friend and by that I meant that she was the only person who we all loved but also found irritating to be around at times.

'The Grill, tonight...be there.' She had said before running off to her next class. She hadn't even given me time to tell her that I had yet to talk to Jenna about my disappearance.

Arriving at the cemetery, It felt strange to walk amongst the tomb stones. Whether it be survivors guilt or just grief for the loss of my parents, it didn't feel right that I was living and yet they were buried amongst generations of Mystic Falls deceased residences.

In memory: Grayson Gilbert And Miranda Sommers Gilbert, May 29th, 2009. Loving parents, read the stone above my parents grave. I placed my hand atop the stone.

'I miss you,' I whispered softly, 'and I'm sorry for disappointing you.'

Elena had sat down on the grass, her back leaning against a statue opposite our parents grave. She had her legs propped up, using her knees as a makeshift table for her notebook. As she wrote, I sat down beside her and pulled grass out from the ground.

'So, what are you writing?' I asked after a while.

Elena sighed and handed the green book to me, 'You can read it if you like.'

'Are you sure?' I replied, taking the diary.

'You're my sister, believe it or not, I have no secrets from you.'

Her words were sweet but caused me to feel incredibly guilt. I was a guarded person and guarded meant secretive.

Dear diary,

I made it through the day. I must have said, "I'm fine, thanks," at least 37 times. And I didn't mean it once. But no one noticed.

When someone asks, "how are you?" They really don't want an answer.

Ena is finally home and I'm glad. I missed her. I just hope she's here to stay. With her home everything seems to be okay again, like life is finally getting back on track.

'You're glad I'm home?' I smirked handing Elena's diary back to her. I didn't bother asking her about how she's not fine; our parents were dead and they died in an accident which should have killed us as well, so, of course she wasn't fine.

'Of course I am. We're twins, it's not the same without you.'

I grinned and wrapped my arm around my sister and pulled her into my side. Sometimes I wondered if she suffered from bipolar.

'The Gilbert Sisters are back in business.' I joked.

'And what business would that be again?'

'Kicking ass, taking names and breaking hearts.' We laughed together, our voices the only sound in the quiet graveyard.

Suddenly a big black crow flew by and landed on top of the stones which our parents names were engraved upon.

'Okay. Hi, bird.' Elena said as we stood up, 'That's not creepy or anything. Shoo!'

Elena waved her hands and the bird flew away, 'That's what I thought.'

'Did you really just talk to a bird?' I smirked.

'Oh, shut up.' Elena said, shoving me playfully.

Suddenly the bird was back and cemetery began to fill with fog.

'We should go,' I told Elena in all seriousness.

We hurried from the graveyard and were almost free of the fog when Elena fell to the ground.

'Lena!'

'You okay?' A voice said from behind. I turned around to find the new guy looking down at my sister.

'Were you following us?' She asked as she got to her feet.

'No, I, uh, I just-- I saw you fall,' he mumbled.

'Uh-Huh, and you just happened to be hanging out in a cemetery,' I said sarcastically, placing my hands on my hips.

'I'm visiting. I have family here.' He replied sincerely.

Oh, well done Ena! You successfully made a full out of yourself in front of the new and really hot guy.

'Wow. Tactless. I'm sorry.' I apologised.

'Don't mind her. It's the fog, It's making us foggy. And then back there, there was this bird, and it was all very hitchcock for a second. That is the bird movie, right, the Hitchcock?' Elena said trying to defuse the tension. 'I'm Elena, and this is my sister Enya.'

'I'm Stefan.' He smiled.

'We know. We have history together.' We know? I didn't know that his name was Stefan.

'And english and french.' he added.

'Right.' Elena said embarrassed. I hated to admit it but I was beginning to feel like a third wheel.

They stared at each other for a moment and I was about to clear my throat when Stefan raised his hand and took a piece of grass from Elena's hair.

'Thanks.' She said.

'Hey, nice ring,' I commented after seeing the large crest looking ring on his hand.

'Oh. Um, It's a family ring,' he said, looking down at his hand, 'Yeah. I'm kinda stuck with it. It's weird, huh?'

'No, no. It's just, I mean, there are rings and then there's that. Lapis Lazuli, right?'

'Yeah, do you have an interest in geology?' He asked me curiously.

'Not really, it's just that I have one like it.' I replied showing him the silver ring on my right hand which had the same stone in the setting of the design.

'What a coincidence.' He said before returning his attention back to Elena. 'Did you hurt yourself?'

'Hmm?' she replied, not paying attention.

'Did you hurt yourself?' I repeated for him.

'Oh, uh, I don't know,' Elena said before rolling up her jean pant leg to find a small gash, 'Oh! Look at that. That is not pretty.'

'We should go and get you cleaned up,' I did't look at my sister's wound as I spoke. I didn't want to see her in pain.

'Really, it's nothing.' Elena said while unrolling her jeans back to normal, 'Where did Stefan go?'

I looked around and found to sign of the mysterious new guy anywhere.

'I don't know.'

'That's strange,' she said shrugging, 'Wanna head home?'

I look around, expecting to find Stefan walking away in the distance but found nothing. However, through the fog I though I saw a dark figure standing amongst the trees watching us.

'Yeah, I think that would be a good idea.'

I quickly ushered Elena back to the car and once inside, I placed my foot on the accelerator and drove away as quickly as possible; wishing for the first time, in a long time, to be in the safety and comfort of home.
