You know how most people think only males can be werewolves? Well, they're wrong. Actually, my

pack is lacking males, and the females are a bit nuts. I'm one of the few sane ones.

"Melanie!" Ivey ran over and sat next to me. No we're not wolves at the moment in case you were

wondering. "Melanie, you know you have to find a mate this year right?!"

"Ivey, you've reminded me four times today alone." She smiled guiltily.

"Right, well… You know Rick wants you to take his son." I looked over at Jared, he was flirting with

all the nuts in this pack.

"Yeah…" I turned back to Ivey. "That's not gonna happen."

"But, its written-"

"Ivey, leave her be." Genevieve sat on the other side of me and her twin sister rolled her eyes. The

twins are identical. You wouldn't be able to tell them apart if it wasn't for Ivey having purple hair with green bangs and for Genevieve having pink hair. Genevieve also had a lip ring going through the right side of her bottom lip. "Besides, if she manages to change Rick's mind, that means I can have him." I rolled my eyes at Genevieve. She was the more conceited one of the twins.

"Yeah, like he'd take you."

"Stop it." I growled and they both bowed they head in obedience. I'm meant to be the pack's alpha once

I choose my mate. If it wasn't for my blood line leading all the way back to the original werewolves, Rick would change the rules so his son, Jared, would be the packs alpha once he chose his mate. "I'm not interested in finding my mate any time soon. If it comes to it, I'll just rule the pack myself." Ivey opened her mouth to object. "With you," I looked at Ivey. "As my omega." She smiled, then she frowned. "What now?"

"You really should try-"

"Alright! Everyone have a seat." Rick stood on the largest rock and commanded the pack to settle

down. Everyone sat on a rock and waited. Rick is not related to me in anyway. My father was the pack's leader originally with Rick as his omega. He died when I was just a year old, making Rick the new alpha. My mother says a wild werewolf killed him, but I have a feeling it was Rick.

"Melanie, I don't suppose you've chosen yet, have you?" My mom sat next to Ivey and whispered to me.

"No."

"Jared." Jared looked up at his father. "Come here." Jared stood and Rick jumped down from his rock.

"Tonight!" Everyone listened intently, except for me, I knew what was coming so I didn't care. "Melanie Bates, is to announce her chosen mate!" Rick looked at me and nodded for me to take his rock. I stood and walked past him as he escorted his son to sit next to my new seat.

I jumped up on the rock and crossed my legs. I looked at everyone, imagining their reactions. No one

was going to be happy. "Melanie." I looked over at Rick. "Go ahead."

I looked at our pack again, with no expression on my face, and sighed. "I…" I could practically hear

everyone's ears perk up. "Have not chosen."

"What?!"

"She was suppose to choose by now!!"

"How long does it fucking take-"

"Silence!" Everyone settled down at my command. I could feel Rick glaring at me. "I was told I have

until the end my junior year, so all of you just need to tuck your tail between your legs and leave me be." Everyone bowed their head in respect. I sighed because my junior year is this year.

"Well then." I could hear the disappointment and the anger in Rick's voice as he spoke. "Since we can

not perform the ritual until Melanie has chosen a mate, we shall carry on with our run." Everyone stood and started peeling off clothes as they quickly walked into the woods. I jumped down from my rock just to have Rick step in front of me. "I thought you would have chosen by now." I shrugged. "You are going to choose soon. The pack won't wait forever." And with that, Rick ran into the woods, leaving a trail of clothes behind.

I stared at the bon fire before someone caught my eye. Dylan, the pack's beta, was still standing on the

other side of the bon fire. He smiled a little before he slowly walked into the woods. I sighed and took my time to follow everyone.

I watched as everyone's skin turned to fur with ease. There was a mixture of mostly grays and browns.

There were some wolves with a mixture of black fur with one or more colors. The twins have red fur, making them look more like giant foxes. My mother has white fur that is just slightly tinted brown with gray fur along the top of her head and her back, all the way to her tail.

Rick and Jared were the only fully black wolves. It's a trait that runs in their blood line all the way

back to the originals. Rick's fur was darker than his son's though, it was like you're looking into the pitch black of a completely darkened room. Jared's was almost as dark, but it had a little bit of a glow to it.

Jared looked over at me as he walked along the stream. He was waiting for me to turn; I didn't plan on

turning though. I nodded ahead and he snarled a little before running off. I sighed and continued to walk along the stream.

I was the only one in the pack to have pure white fur. Everyone calls me Ghost behind my back

because that is what the white wolf is known as, The Ghost Wolf. There hasn't been a Ghost Wolf for thousands of years, so you could imagine everyone's reaction when I turned for the first time on my tenth birthday.

Black wolves are almost as rare as a Ghost Wolf, but every hundred or so years, someone turns with the

black fur. It's even more rare that we have two black wolves in our pack, so everyone's a little worried that a black wolf won't turn up for quite some time.

Black wolves are usually known as The Shadow Wolf, but since we have two, Jared is known as The

Shadow Wolf's runt.

Melanie, where are you?

That was mother, sharing her thoughts with me, she's been worried about me since Rick started

pressuring me to take his son as my mate.

I'm fine mother, just enjoy your run please.

She didn't respond, so I was assuming she was doing as I said and was now enjoying her run. I sighed

and started walking on the random rocks that were in the stream. I haven't ran with my pack in almost two years; I just don't enjoy it anymore. I stopped enjoying it when everyone decided it'd be fun to play tag along with the future alpha, so I stopped running and let them follow Rick.

I looked up when I heard a branch on the ground snap. My eyes turned gold as my canine's grew out

and I snarled in the direction of the snap. The wolf bowed its head before opening its eyes and waiting for my okay to come closer. I calmed down and nodded.

Richey padded along the side of the stream as I continued to walk on the rocks and stones. Richey is

Rick's nephew. He's only ten and I'm the only one who doesn't give him shit. He has black fur mixed with gray, ruining his ancestor's trait.

I stretched my hand out and scratched behind his ears. He folded his ears back and pressed his head

into my hand more. "You okay Richey?"

He licked my hand as his yes. I nodded and took my hand away from him.

"Richey, I don't know what I'm gonna do." He looked up at me for further explanation. "We're lacking

males and there's going to be trouble no matter who I choose." He huffed air out through his nose as we continued walking. "What do you think I should do?" He looked up at me with his head tilted sideways in confusion. Richey had to mature at ten because he's the only male in his family, so talking to him is like talking to a guy my age, almost.

Pick who makes you happy.

"That's not going to work and you know it Rich."

Well.. Pick someone who's good for the pack then.

"If you were in the right age range for this situation, I'd pick you because you're the only one not

going nuts about this."

He sneezed in disgust. I would tell you no anyway; I don't want that. I hate these people. I'm only here

because of my family.

I scratched behind his ears and sighed. "I know Richey, I know." There's a rule that the chosen mate

can't be any younger than seventeen and no older than twenty-five. I'm not sure how anyone came up with those ages for the rule, but I can't change it, that's been the rule for years.

Richey and I stopped when we heard Rick's howl, calling the pack back to our bon fire. Richey sat

back and raised his head as he howled in response with the rest of the pack before he turned around and ran off without me. I sighed and started my walk back.

"Nice of you to finally join us." Rick snapped as I walked back to our pack circle thirty minutes after

everyone else. I shrugged and sat between the twins. "How was your run, Melanie?"

"Rick, don't you know that I don't run?" I said it like I was talking to my mother and she'd shake her

head at me. However, Rick wasn't my mother and he snarled and growled at me in response. I pulled my lips back, exposing my canines as my nose crinkled.

"Enough!" My mother yelled and Rick stopped. I slowly let my face return to normal again.

"Any announcements, you'd like to make, Princess?" I snarled and snapped at Rick. Rick, Jared, and

the bitchy girls of the pack call me Princess and I chew them out every time they do.

I turned, not worrying about peeling my clothes off first, and stalked up to Rick. By law, he can't hurt

me because I'm future alpha; if he hurts me, he's knocked down from his power.  "Melanie." Mother snapped at me, but I ignored her as I continued to stalk up to Rick.

He snarled and snapped at me before he turned and closed the rest of the space between us. Are you

going to challenge me little girl?

I snarled and snapped at him. He bowed down, ready to pounce when needed. I copied his motions

and dug my back paws into the dirt. I pulled my ears back in anger and snapped at him a few times.

Rick crouched down to pounce when someone jumped in between us. My mother snapped at Rick,

telling him to back off. He snarled and raised his paw to strike her. I growled more and readied myself to pounce. He brought his paw down and struck her nose. She yelped and covered her nose.

I snarled and jumped at him, instantly pinning him to the dirt. How dare you! I snarled and swiped his

face. He growled and kicked me off of him. I rolled and got back to my feet quickly. I was ready to go after him again when someone else jumped down in front of me; I couldn't tell from their rear who it was.

Strike her and you loose your power. I tilted my head in confusion as to why Dylan saved me.

Rick snarled one last time before he dismissed the pack and he ran off. Jared glared at me before

running after his dad, still in his human form. Dylan turned around and bowed to me in respect. I licked his white snout that didn't match his dark black fur and he licked my snout in response before standing again and returning to his seat.

I sighed and walked over to my mother. I stood over her and licked her wound. She whimpered and

licked my snout as her thanks. I nipped at her, trying to get her to hold still, before I continued to clean her wound.  Thank you Melanie. I licked my mother's ear and stepped away from her so we could run home.
