Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers. His Eight Rules of Writing really have more to do with getting through the story than making magic - but you can't make magic unless you actually get that story down.
As far as improving your writing, I don't think this list gives you much to go on, but my favorite rule is #6: Fix it. Remember that, sooner or later, before it ever reaches perfection, you will have to let it go and move on and start to write the next thing. Perfection is like chasing the horizon. Keep moving.
I've been really working on "letting go" of things that don't work. Especially if I still want to tell the story, I need to be willing to let go of everything that doesn't work, even if that means getting rid of A LOT.
This weeks challenge for your writing: get rid of something that's not working in your current story.
