When you wake up you were on the couch curled up on Dan. His knees were over the arm of the couch and he was leaning against the back of it. Such an odd position. Phil was asleep on a pillow and Zoe was leaning on his shoulder. You skilfully get off Dan and start making food. Food sounds real good right now.
You gather up the materials to make pancakes. As you rummage around for a whisk you have to hold back laughter. They have like 10 and Dan refuses to touch them. You grab two and leave one in Dan's lap. As you make the pancakes the others start waking up when they smell them. You all gather at the table and eat. Today was the day to get Kimberly. The snow had stopped and Dan got a car rented. The three of you were scared to get in the car. especially Dan who's driving.
Breakfast was eaten in silence. Phil went back to bed and the rest of you headed for the car. It was a nice Cadillac. That didn't stop you from being terrified. everyone got in and buckled up. It took Dan a bit of time to start it up. You could see his hands shaking. He was only doing this for Kimberly. He manages to start it and start driving. He kept the speed slow. Never over 70mph and always was looking at the road. Half an hour passes and you arrive at the orphanage. Your hear was racing.
Everyone gets out of the car and walks side by side. You felt the happiness radiating off of you.
Will she remember you?
What if something is wrong and you can't get her?
What if you can't even adopt?
What if someone adopted her?
Stop. That's just fear talking. You're getting your first child today. Calm the fuck down.
Dan holds open the door for you and Zoe. You step into the orphanage. It was very old fashioned but kept well. You were thinking of something out of Annie but it was nice.
"Hello how may I help you?" A lady says, coming around the corner.
"Hi we we were looking to adopt a little girl." You reply. The words felt Crazy coming off your lips.
"We have plenty. Is there one your liking for in particular?"
"Well girls were at Starbucks a few weeks ago and we met one."
"What was her name?"
"Kimberly."
The lady smiles and heads into the other room gesturing for you to follow. You followed into a room. There were little girls playing with dolls and stuffed animals. They were all dressed well. It seemed like such a nice place. Then you see her. She was sitting alone not eh corner braiding a dolls hair.
"Hi Miss Tiffany." She says looking up from her doll.
Then she looked further and sees you. Her eyes widened when she saw you, Dan and, Zoe.
"Oh my gosh!" She says jumping up and tossing her doll aside.
She runs up to you and hugs you. She only makes up to your waist so you pick her up. You hug her tight. Dan stands next to you and Kimberly sees him.
"This can't be happening." She says.
Zoe leaves and goes to the other kids and talks with them. A lot recognised you. Dan takes Kimberly and Miss. Tiffany looks very happy.
"This is the one isn't it?"
"Yes yes very much yes." You say.
"Follow me. You have a lot of paperwork." She says sweetly.
You instantly follow and Dan passes Kimberly to you. You walk along leaving Zoe with the other girls. As your waking Kimberly asks questions.
"I didn't think you would adopt me. Why did you?"
"There was something about you that made me want you as a child."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Did you meet the secret?"
"Of course I did. If I did tell none of the other girls would believe me."
"Haha well it's good that you kept it a secret."
"Was the wedding pretty?"
"Yes it was."
"Yay!"
She was so smart for a 8 year old. She was incredibly tiny though. Al the other girls look normal sized. Kim was like the runt of the group. She was only four feet by tall and was super light. Her hair was incredible. They seemed to cut it witch was a shame. Now they fell right under her shoulders.
She looks like this but with black hair.
When you get up front the lady hands you a stack of papers. It was going to be hell but definitely worth it.
"I'll do half and you can take the other." Dan says.
You nod and Miss Tiffany tells you that you can go help Kimberly pack. Kimberly pulls you down corridors to her room. It was small and had a small bed with a tiny wardrobe. She had two dolls and a iPod.
"Miss Tiffany gave me this on my 7th birthday. Only because I was good and never fought with the other girls. That's when I started watching YouTube and found you and Dan."
She was so adorable.
"Then the other girls watched it on the computer on the library but I get to watch but here." She adds smiling.
She pulls her worn pink suitcase form under the bed. She goes to the wardrobe and pulls out the clothes. Most of it matched Dan's bedspread but there were splashes of blues and red. This was such a peculiar place. It gave you a vide you couldn't quite explain.
"All right I'm packed." She says with a grin. She was holding a black coat.
"There was a doll you were playing with when we came, want to go grab her too?"
"Oh yeah!" She runs down the hall and grabs it.
"K all done!"
You take her bag and she puts her coat on. You bring her back to Dan and he was already done with papers.
"It was quicker than you'd think. Just sign a few and were good!" Dan says.
He looked so exited it was adorable. You take the pen and started signing stuff. There was one final paper that Miss Tiffany handed to you. Dan slips his hand around you waist and you sign it at the same time. Kimberly squeals in delight.
Kimberly Marie Howell
"If anything ever happens to us Zoe gets custody." He whispers to you.
"Zoe!! We're done! Come on!"
"I found one I want!"
"What!?"
She comes on holding a two year old with pin straight blonde hair. She was cute but could Zoe raise a kid alone? Louise did it but still.
"Zoe are you crazy?" Dan says.
"Hi Lola!" Kimberly says.
"I'm not crazy. I just want one too"
"Zoe. You need to think."
"I have been. Alfie told me he wanted kids. I'm doing this for him and myself."
"Ok. If you're sure about this go for it." You say.
Dan stays silent and sits down while Zoe fills papers out. Well now Kimberly has a friend. She looked so happy. Her pricing blue eyes were filled wit Joy, appreciation and excitement.
10 minutes pass and Zoe's finished. Miss Tiffany hands Zoe a car seat and everyone heads to the car. Kimberly skips to the car.
"I haven't been outside since Starbucks!".
She climbs in to the very back row. She helps Dan set up Lola's car seat. Zoe seemed very happy too.
*skip skip home*
"I can't believe in actually on this apartment!"
Phil comes out of his bedroom and grins.
"Omg she's adorable!"
"Omg it's AmazingPhil." Kimberly says.
Phil laughs and gives her a hug. She looks so happy. Phil goes and meets Lola too. Today was working out great even though yesterday was something out of final destination.
You and Dan take Kimberly to her new room. The bed and other furniture was set up already but no paint yet. Zoe was going to take her to the store to pick whatever she wanted.
She jumps onto the bed and smiles.
"This is amazing."
Then she gets up and hugs you and Dan.
"Thank you."
