“What the heck Val! This isn’t funny!” I screamed at the woods. The bushes made noises as I said that, making me jump far away from them.
Fantastic, now there was a ghost following me and a Vampire!
A deep chuckle made me turn to face the black forest, and not the ground. Of course nothing was there, since I couldn’t see diddly- squat. I stepped away from the laughter, to get a playful jab in the side.
“Ugh! You son-of-a—“
I swatted at the air behind me, to hit nothing.
“Are you scared?” he questioned from behind me, with a hint of amusement in his voice.
“It’s dark outside, there’s a possible ghost following me, and I’m with a Vampire. I think I’m well past being scared!” I yelled while I karate- chopped the space behind me.
Of course I had hit nothing.
“This is funnier for me, because I can see you perfectly,” a husky voice whispered beside my ear. I reached behind me to grab his stupid curly hair, to instead to grab air once again.
I spun in a circle, unable to pinpoint where he was. “What is the point of this?”
The flashlight was grabbed out of my hands."Hey! Give it back!"
A tree cracked loudly, as if he threw it. “You need to be able to fight in the dark,” he stated simply. He took my hands in his, and put them into fists. “C’mon now, it’s almost sun rise.”
“Hell no! I’m not fighting—“
“You’re fighting me.”
“No I’m—“
“You’re fighting me,” he repeated, obviously growing annoyed.
He gripped my chin with a glove, and used my name as a command. Something I was never fond of. “Cassie.”
“Vally,” I mocked, trying to hide the smile on my lips. My tone was exactly like is, due to my observations of him constantly.
He sighed heavily at that nickname, and let go of my chin. “You are simply impossible.” I saw a burst of light in front of me, and I shielded my eyes. After a few moments I adjusted, to see his face in front of me.
Of course I let out a tiny scream. I mean who wouldn’t right? He’s scary in the daytime.
He pointed to his ears. “Seriously? I’m sensitive in the hearing department.”
“Really?” I questioned in a sarcastic tone. “I thought you were sensitive in other departments also! This is a really a shocker to me.“
His blue eyes eyes narrowed. “Do you ever just not talk?”
“No! I love talking! Talktalktalktalktalk—“
“I’m hungry,’ he interrupted. “What’s your blood type again?”
My mouth slammed shut after he said that. At first what he said didn’t register, and I thought he was acting a legit question. Then it kicked in and I opened my mouth to protest. A black leather glove tightened around my mouth. I grabbed onto his wrist, but he gripped the back of my head so I couldn’t pry it off. My curses were muffled under his hand, and I couldn't help but laugh at the cureent situation I usually ended up being in with him.
“Oh Cassie,” he said, stroking my hair with one hand. I scowled at him, trying to bite his finger. He countered it, and put my back to his hard chest. “You were so innocent when we first met. Were you not?”
I grunted, really trying to say a curse word. But he took it as 'yes,' and smiled appreciatively. "I know, I know. Where did she go?"
"MMM!"
“Ok, I’ll let you go.”
He kissed the side of my neck affectionately, releasing my mouth with his hand. I turned around, putting my hands on my hips. He moved the flashlight to my face, blinding me. I pulled it out of his hand and shown it at him.
I tried not to act too affected by his sparkling blue eyes, and just-out-of-bed, chestnut hair. He tiled his head down to his chest, looking at me from under his lashes. “Hello there,” he said huskily, a lazy smile on his lips. The warm air from his mouth was noticeable under the flashlight.
I blushed even in the freezing weather, and cleared my throat. “I need you to answer some questions,” I told him, keeping the light on his face with both hands. If I only used one I knew my hands would shake.
His grin widened, revealing just how playful he was at the moment. “Anything.”
“About what you’re training me for…” I started, feeling the nervousness in my stomach. “I want to know if you really expect me to kill you.”
Valentines eyes lowered to the ground, creating even more butterflies in my stomach. He didn’t answer for a long time, so I continued.
“Because…because I don’t know if I can kill you,” I blurted. “I—I mean I probably could, if you trained me more. But the problem is I don’t want to kill anyone. As much as you annoy me, make fun of me, the fact that you kidnapped me, lied, and practically torment me every day, I would never wish for you to die,” I told him. He hadn’t lifted his eyes, but I knew he was listening.
“I don’t want to train just to end your life, because I’m scared you’ll…I’m scared that you--“
I broke off, wiping at my eyes.
“You’re scared I’ll manipulate you to kill me,” he finished for me, his voice quiet. We stood there in silence, our breathing leaving traces in the icy air.
“I understand why you are so heartbroken. I witnessed what you had to go through with Jane. But I just..I don’t understand why you want to die so badly. Don’t you think she would have wanted you to—“
He lifted his sapphire eyes to mine, silencing me. “You don’t know what she would have wanted me to do. Neither do I, because she’s dead.”
“Val—“
“She’s dead, Cassie. She doesn’t breath anymore! I shouldn’t be alive either but look at me now!” he thumped his chest. “I’m breathing, and living like the Monster I am!” he screamed at me. He took a deep breath, looking away. “Do you really think she would have wanted me to be like this?” he questioned, his voice now quiet.
“I really don’t know,” I told him. “But I don’t care what she thinks. I don’t want you to die.”
The sun started to rise a bit, lighting the forest more. I let the tears flow freely from my face, not knowing how to change this stubborn mans mind.
“Stop that,” he stated dryly. “You’re making me feel worse.”
The tears came harder as soon as he said that, and I covered my face in embarrassment. Valentine rubbed his jaw, trying to keep his emotions in as usual. I held my breath as he turned back around to face me; his shoulders slacked slightly in defeat, as he watched me sob.
“Come here,” he said, pulling on my jacket. I let him pull me further until I hit his chest. He wrapped his arms around me protectively, placing his head on top of mine. “I should be the one crying hysterically, I’m the suicidal one,” he stated matter a fact like.
I couldn’t help but burst out laughing at that comment, even if he was serious. I moved my arms out of his tight hold and reached up to attach myself to his neck. We stayed like that for a few moments, until my nose got cold. I stuck it into his warm neck. “You’re like a heat blanket.”
“I get that a lot,” he whispered, nipping at my ear. “Now stop talking, so I can continue playfully biting your ear in peace.”
I laughed again at his dry humor, listening to it echo in the now morning-lit forest. Frozen dew stuck to the branches, and the grass. All of these emotions hit me, as I realized we were still embrasing eachother tightly. “Val, do you…you know…like me?” I asked, afraid he wouldn’t respond. “I was just wondering, if maybe you wouldn’t want to…leave if I changed your mind at all...you know, with the whole 'killing yourself' thing...”
He chuckled, deep in his throat. “No, I enjoy nipping at everyone’s ear,” he replied, with heavy sarcasm. “Of course I like you, or you would be extremely dead right now. Actually, I would probably burry you in the dirt where we are standing.”
I instantly tried to move my head over his shoulder to look at the ground. I shook off the thought of him shirtless, digging a grave for me so I could respond to his idiotic response. If he wasn’t so hot I honestly would have jumped off the balcony by now. “You know what I mean.”
“Well…I’m not going to say I love you. It’s not a word in my dictionary, you know.”
Oh I knew, I just thought he was over that rediculous notion.
My stomach dropped a little. “I didn’t want you to,” I lied, loosening my grip against his neck.
He tightened his hold on me, pressing his lips against my ear. “I wasn’t done Sweetheart. I think with a lot more intense training, hard work, and possibly that mouth of yours clamping shut more often, I’ll be able to answer that curious question of yours in greater detail. I will tell you the feeling I have for you could only be described as passion.”
I frowned. “Isn’t that just another word for love?”
"Hmmm..."
Stupid bastard, I thought. I gripped his shirt, needing him to just spit out that he loved me.
He snickered, sending chills down my back as usual. “I think now is the time to tell you that our bond isn’t broken, I put that creepy doll under your pillow; which is still there, I raided your underwear drawers a few times and videotaped you talking in your sleep.”
My jaw dropped, as I pushed away from him. “What did you just say?”
He stepped away slowly, carefully looking at my fists, and then sprinted away from me laughing hysterically. I let out a battle cry, chasing him close behind. My boots hit the frozen leaves, leaving their imprints that would linger for only a few precious days. I brushed away branches, as Valentine easily ran threw them. His speed became so fast he was at least twenty feet ahead of me.
He wasn't too far away though, that I couldn't see him turn his head and stick his pink tongue out at me. I quickened my face, making him turn back aroun in panic. "Jesus, you're fast!" he huffed, echoing off the lightly lit forest. We continued deeper into the forest, bursting into laughs. Finally, after what seemed liek forever, he climbed a tree to escape from me, squatting at the top like a Kitten getting away from a Dog.
I put my hands on my hips, scowling up at him. "You're going to have to come down some time!"
Even at the height he was at in the tree I saw his bright blue eye offer me a wink. "Come and get me, baby!"
"Maybe I will!" I screamed back, smirking back at him.
My boots latched onto a ridge in the trunk, andso I hauled myself up to the first branch. His positon was at least fifteen feet up. His heavy boots dangled down at me, as he watched me with that strange look he gets when I do something he didn't expect me to do; almost a look of praise.
I had finally realized at that moment, that I had a new mission to look foward to. One that would unlock that freezing cold heart that lived inside Valentine Fane, and possibly make me this 'Slayer', that I apparently was able to be. One that would deffinetlely make me the strong, brave young woman I was underneath.
Operation ‘Bleeding Royalty’ was now in play.
