Note: THIS IS A PREVIEW OF A CHAPTER OF A KAGEYAMA X READER FANFIC (That i havent posted yet) IM WRITING. It's not complete, but this preview is pretty lenghty at 3.5k+ words. I'm barely gonna edit this one here. I'm going to edit and continue writing this on the full story (I'm not sure when I'll post it- probably once I finish the writing whole story idk)

---

(Y/LastN) (Y/FirstN) wasn't much of a sports person. No, she wasn't fond of getting sweaty, or chasing after balls, or catching one's breath. She simply was not meant to be an athlete, she would say.

(Y/FN) was more of a music person. But she wasn't restricted to just listening to songs through her earphones. She was more than that. She was a musician.

Such soft and delicate hands were never meant to spike volleyballs, or to swing rackets. They were more useful towards playing sweet melodies on musical instruments. Fingers playing keys on the piano, hands holding on to a violin- rather than shooting threes into a basketball hoop.

Her ears weren't accustomed to loud cheers of "Let's Do This!", "Nice Serve!", or "Time Out!". The (Hair/Colour) haired girl much preferred hearing the lovely voices of her favourite artists. The beat of her metronome was much better than the not at all synchronized sound of the ball hitting the court, or the whistling of referees, or the annoying buzzers.

She could never be a coach, or manager, either. Not even a supporter. Her voice was used to sing, or to instruct others on how to play an instrument. (Y/FN) wasn't tactical enough to give game plans.

In a way, (Y/LN) (Y/FN) detested sports. What beauty was there in it? Where is the harmony? The unity? She would ask herself often those questions, only to have no answer in the end to give to herself.

---

The young female was not so delighted when she was informed that she had to watch a bunch of sweaty men toss balls above nets. "(Y/FN)-chan, we're going to leave the house in a while. You're going to watch some Volleyball tournaments with Dad and I." Her older brother told (Y/FN), and she cursed mentally.

Sitting on the bleachers, she knows she would not need to be there if it weren't for the fact that her father and brother were such sports enthusiasts.

"Couldn't you two have gone on your own?" The (eye/colour) eyes girl complains quietly, causing the eldest (Y/LN) family member to chuckle. "Oh, lighten up, kiddo. You're too much like your mother.."

Ah, yes, mother. It's been a while since (Y/FN) has last seen her in person. But through videos of mother's performances, and news articles, she knows that her mother is as she remember. The same (h/c) hair she had, the same eyes.. The only difference is that the older woman's smile seems more genuine than her own. Less formal, and polite, and distant.

Many say that the famous musician's daughter was almost a carbon copy of her. (Y/LN) (Y/FN) was a music lover as well, after all. A metronome of all things would be her 7 year old self's ideal toy.

The girl replies to her father. "I know. I've been told." But it seems her response is ignored, in favour of the game that is about to take place in a matter of minutes. The two men she is sandwiched in between cheer loudly for the younger one's school- Aoba Josai.

"The game hasn't even started yet.." She grumbles. Darn her low battery cellphone. Her eyes shift from her lap, to the court. The teams were simply warming up, but (Y/LN) (Y/FN) is already hit with a flash of realization.

Maybe, perhaps, Music and Sports aren't too different. She almost smiles to herself, as she gives out all of her attention to the match.

---

Adagio. She suspects that the players should still be at ease- calm. The members of the teams are only practicing to serve the volleyballs. In fact, some members are still stretching.

And then, she locks eyes with a tall, black haired man, with the number 9 on his jersey. In the few and limited seconds they had eye contact, (Y/FN) sees how he is scowling, and that his eyebrows are furrowed. His eyes hold determination and intensity. He looks away, and he glares at the opposing team- her brother's school's male volleyball team.

Her eyes are opened a bit more now, thanks to number 9. She feels the fire in the match that has yet to begin. Maybe, she was wrong. Adagio certainly wasn't the right tempo she would set the moment as. The tempo is accelerating as the minutes pass. She could surely say that the tempo marking would be...

Andantino. It's not entirely fast, for the real action had not started. But the air is tense- filled with anticipation. The movement is slightly quicker than the normal walking pace.

---

Moderato. The tall one with the glasses is the first to serve in the match. The ball is recieved quite easily by Aoba Josai , and suddenly, Oikawa Tooru dumps the ball onto Karasuno's court, giving them the lead. The tension, or rather tempo.. It was accelerating. Accelerando. It was only one point lost, and yet they seemed so irritated.

"How can a single point won matter so much to them?" She muttered. Her father gives her a bemused look. "You're actually paying attention to the game." It's all he says, chortling, before turning back to watch the game.

When the ball goes over the net to Karasuno's side, (Y/FN) can't help but straighten up when number 9 tosses the ball to number 10. 'Such a quick and reckless tempo.. If it didn't fail, it might've been an Allegro or-' Her train of thought stops, and her eyes widen a fraction as she leans in more, eyes set on the raven haired boy.

Vivace. Lively, fast, and an unexpected turn of the tables. He takes back the point by landing the same shot Oikawa had to them, as if to mock or test him.

'Well, this is going to be interesting.' She thought, and she assures herself that she's not wrong this time. Negative sparks surround the team, and it all feels like a showdown of who's the best. "You know, (Y/FN)-chan, Oikawa-san, and that number 9 just now, is what you call a setter." Her brother informs her out of no where. A setter?

She replies, "Is that so?"

"Yeah. They're kinda supposed to bring out the best in the members and stuff. How the players play depend a lot on the setter." Another link to music comes to her- they're conductors, of sort. All the members could play the same piece.. However, the better the conductor, the better the music plays.

And fortunately for her brother, as the time passes, and the score of Match 1 is at 25-15 in Seijou's favour, the (hair colour) haired lady can't help but sulk as she figures out that Oikawa is definitely the better conductor at the moment.

The 2nd and 3rd match all pass by as a blur. Vivacissimo, Allegro Vivace, Presto.. The heat and intensity of their battle is rising, and she couldn't help but jump off her seat in glee when Karasuno wins the 2nd round against a powerhouse school. (Y/FN)'s father and brother stare at her in confusion.

"Since when were you so into sports? AND DON'T SUPPORT THE ENEMY, (Y/FN)-CHAN!" In the 3rd match, something called a deuce happens. Prestissimo, 25-24 Karasuno's favour, 25-25.. 26-25..

(Y/EyeColour) orbs follow the score anxiously. Karasuno, much to everyone's surprise, was in the lead. However, she was not stupid enough to believe that Aoba Josai did not have the ability to turn the tables on the crows.

31-31.. Aoba Josai just refuses to give up, and the heat being given off from their battle rises as the seconds pass. 31-32. (Y/FN) can't help but drown out the cheers of her brother and father as Oikawa lands a feint. 31-33.

She stays seated, as she observe Karasuno vent and show their frustration in losing. She cannot blame them- all their efforts and passion in the game had brought them to nothing. They were like those flowers you wished on as a kid. The dandelion seeds have yet to bloom into beautiful petals, and yet with a gust of wind they fade away.

The crowd probably was entranced by Aoba Josai's extraordinary win. However, (Y/LN) (Y/FN) saw a beautiful art within the so called losers. She watches the men with black and orange uniforms walk away, and from there, the (hair/colour) haired girl knew- She had found her new muse.

---

Her friends start to talk about graduating Junior High, and what high schools they're going to. "My aunt wants me to attend Shiratorizawa Academy like my brother, but I doubt I can pass the exams.." The one who sat beside her said, frowning.

"I'll probably just go to a high school that's near my house.." Another states. "I think I'll attend Aoba Josai. A lot of people say it's a good school.." (Y/FN) can't help but barely listen to her friends as she stares at the letter in her hands.

"What about you, (Y/FN)-chan?"

"Huh?" She snaps from her daze, looking at the girl in front of her. "Your going to Aoba Josai too, right? Like your brother?" She stiffens. That was originally the plan of her father. But,

"What are you talking about, Ami-chan? She's obviously going to a music and arts school in one of those foreign countries or something. I bet you got offered a scholarship or something."

She cringes, clutching the letter in her hand tighter. Yes, today, the principal had given her a letter directly from a prestigious music and arts school in America. It was a great opportunity for her to be able to pursue her passion and dream. However, there's something stopping her..

"Yes, I was offered a scholarship in America." (Y/FN) stated. Her friends all congratulate her, however, she seems to be the least happy in the group.

---

"I don't think I'm going to accept the scholarship offer yet." She says, a little bit nervous on how her father would react, yet confident in her decision. Her father does a double take. "But why? I thought you'd want to follow your mother's footsteps and become a famous musician?"

"I.. don't know. Maybe I just want to have one year in a normal high school. Moving to the west and all is kind of overwhelming. I'm just 14, remember."

Her father nods. "I understand. So which high school do you want to go to?"

"Karasuno." (Y/FN) doesn't pay mind how quick her response is. Her father raises a brow at the eagerness in her tone. "Oh, aren't they the new champions in Volleyball? The last game I saw from them, they beat Shiratorizawa."

"Mhm." As the months have passed, she's grown to not only to respect Volleyball, but to come to become inspired by Karasuno as well. They came out of no where- they were concrete, and yet they rose up to become winners.

They were just so exciting. Unexpected. A flurry of emotions that she can feel and had played through the keys of her piano, or violin. They're never set to a steady tempo- and that was what made them such an intersting muse.

---

Only a few days upon her first days in Karasuno, she is approached by a blonde second year student. Her senpai is slightly shaking, the paper in her hand moving slightly. "U-um, excuse me!"

"Did you need anything, senpai?" (Y/FN) questions. The blonde smiles. "Yes! Um, I'm Yachi Hitoka, the manager of the volleyball team- and I was wondering if you wanted to join us as a trial manager!"

"It's not that I'm forcing you! But I just heard from one of the new first years in the club that you were a really smart and cute girl and-" The (eye/colour) eyed girl couldn't help but blush. Someone had said good things like that about her?

Yachi halts her speech, eyeing the chorale club application form (Y/FN) had been holding. "Oh, I'm sorry for bothering you. I guess you already chose a club!" Before she can even say anything, the manager runs off to another direction.

"Wait.." She mutters uselessly. It wasn't that she was already sure of joining choir- she just accepted the form from the club president, who recognised her from one of the solo event competitions she won against the former president of the club.

(Y/FN) turns around, walking absentmindedly to the opposite direction. And then, she bumps into a tall figure. "Ow.." She mutters. "Sorry.." The man says, and the (colour) haired maiden looks up to see who she had bumped into.

Rest. There's a pause, as she sees the eyes that had gotten her so interested in Karasuno in the first place. She's finally run into him, one of her inspirations for playing music.

It's Mr. Number 9.

She sees his onyx hair, and she suddenly becomes aware of her quickening heartbeat. Excitement courses through her. It's nothing overly dramatic- feelings for him not thought about too much.

It's a simple adoration.

(Y/FN) suddenly becomes aware that he's still standing there, staring down at her. "O-oh! I'm sorry, senpai!" The volleyball player scratches the behind of his neck.

"It's fine.." He finished awkwardly. He almost walks away to leave her behind, but something within the (eye/c) eyed woman wouldn't let herself have the conversation end so quickly.

"It's (Y/LN) (Y/FN)." His foot steps stop, as he turns around to face her once more. "Wha-" The setter halts his speech, realising that she had just introduced herself to him. "I'm Kageyama Tobio."

She smiles briefly. "Tobio-senpai." She tries it out, the foreign name seeming so familiar as if it had rolled out of her tongue many times before.

(Y/FN) then remembers something; Speaking of Kageyama and volleyball, maybe she should talk to the blonde manager again..

"Hey, right Hitoka-senpai is looking for a trial manager?" She asks. He raises a brow. "Ya. You wanna try out, or.."

(Y/FN) nods, and Kageyama sighs as he pulls her with him towards the 2nd gymnasium. "Let's go, we're late. Coach might just shout at me." The girl flushes in embarrassment. "Sorry for making you late, senpai." He shakes his head.

"It should be fine- I have our new manager as an excuse anyway." He grins, and (Y/FN) can't help but reciprocate.

---

A week has passed and (Y/FN) had felt as though she found real friends within the Karasuno Boys Volleyball Team. Hitoka was really nice and helpful in teaching her how to be a manager. Ennoshita, the captain, had been really welcoming.

"Welcome to the team, (Y/LN)." He said, smiling.

The libero and the bald wing spiker were awfully nice, and she couldn't help but blush when they cheered about when they saw her. "And here I thought we had to stick with having only one pretty manager, with Kiyoko gone."

The new first year members had potential in them. Not enough to become starters yet, but with training, you were sure they'd come around.

One of them happened to be her classmate who recommended her to Yachi. "Hm? (Y/LN)-san? You're actually joining? I thought you'd join a music club or something."

The second years were a stranger, however, strong, bunch. Kei-senpai was tall, and sarcastic things often came out of his mouth than not.

"Maybe we should have you compose a cheer song for us.. We all know Tanaka and Nishinoya would play better with that." The megane subtly teased.

(Y/FN) found Tadashi to be a total sweetheart. "Tsukki, don't tease (Y/LN)-chan too much.."

Hinata Shouyo was a bouncing ball of fiery energy. And she found herself amazed at seeing him jump up close.

And finally, the one who completed the freaky quick duet with Hinata- the one she admired the most amongst them; Kageyama Tobio.

He was reckless, yet a genius.
He was calm in being a setter, yet his movements were so alive.

Her heart accelerates to Allegro and she knows that he'll never fail to amaze her with his skill and talent.

"How's being our manager, (Y/LN)?" He asks her after practice, and she smiles. It's become their little habit of having a small chat everyday; Usually about volleyball, or her music, or school. It's not a lot- however, she still treasures it.

"It's nice, Tobio-senpai." She says simply, "To be able to watch and support you guys."

"Oh, that's good." Their friendship is simple and steady, at one pace.

So when, and where did it all go wrong?

---

She receives a text message from her father, telling her that she's been invited to join a singing contest, with the prize being 200,000 yen, as well as a scholarship to a distinguished school in New York.

At first, she was going to decline. After all, money held not much importance to her at the moment. And she was rather enjoying her stay in Karasuno. But when she overheard some of her senpais, alongside Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei address the need for funds if they wanted to get the team into more practice matches; She decided to join the contest.

"Y-you don't have to watch me, you know." (Y/FN) murmurs in embarrassment as Kageyama, Hinata, Yachi, Tanaka, Nishinoya, and Ennoshita all come to support her. "It's your rest day, after all."

"It's fine, (Y/LN). You'll be winning us our travelling funds, after all." Kageyama says, causing the girl to blush. "Who said I'll even win.."

Suddenly, a voice from behind them appears. "Modest as always, prodigy-chan." (Y/FN) flinches at the familiar nickname, as her and the rest of the group turn around to find a man who seems to be a contestant as well.

"Nakamura-san, please stop calling me that." The (hair/c) haired woman replied politely, despite her annoyance. The man ignores her. "Haven't seen you since three months ago. I almost thought that you'd gone to America for high school." He chuckles.

"America?" Hinata whispers to Kageyama in confusion, who shrugs. "But here you are. What, did your father convince you to join and wreck everyone's chances of winning 1st place again?" She frowns. "Nakamura-san, please.."

Nakamura raises a brow. "Oh sorry, how rude. I'm embarrassing prodigy-chan in front of her friends." He laughs, walking away. "Well, we contestants have to go prepare backstage now." He says to the Karasuno group, before turning to (Y/FN). "But of course, I think it's better you don't prepare. The amateurs deserve a chance to win, too."

He scoffs. "Well, who cares. Ganbatte kudasai, (Y/LN)."

He walks away, not noticing his fellow contestant's downcast eyes. "Oi, (Y/LN), you okay?" Kageyama asks, yet the girl only goes the same direction Nakamura did. There's a silence, and some quiet shuffling as Kageyama and the rest take their seats.

"Well, wasn't he rude to our precious (Y/FN)!" Nishinoya exclaims suddenly, Tanaka nodding in agreement. "Kinda reminds me of Shittyshima- except this one talks too much." The 3rd year says, annoyed.

"(Y/FN)-chan is kind of like you, Kageyama-kun." Yachi says, and Hinata laughs. "Yeah! Except she's more friendly. And she's pretty!" The black haired man only scowls, although he can't help bit agree. He did see a bit of his old self in her. However, she was better. She didn't let talent get to her head. She was kind. All the same, she was unlike him.

His thoughts come to a halt when the contest starts.

---

Most who know (Y/LN) (Y/FN) expected that she'd be standing on first place podium. After all, she was talented. She had never lost a singing competition since five or so years ago.

However, it wasn't her raw talent that made her win this time. No, it was the unusual amount of will and emotion in her performance.

Professional singers knew skill was not enough. You would need inspiration as well- to make your song reach out to the people.

And right in front of (Y/FN) was her inspiration. Karasuno. Kageyama.

Before, she had only been singing for herself- because she simply liked music. Because she wanted to follow her mother. But those did not give a powerful performance as much as today.

She receives the prizes, accepts the congratulations of people here and there, before walking off to her friends. "Good job, (Y/FN)-chan!" Yachi cheers, hugging her. The girl gives a smile. "Thank you, Yachi-senpai."

Ennoshita merely gives a grin, patting (Y/FN) on the shoulder as the other two third years crowd over the (skin/tone) woman, showering her with flattering praise.

"Please, stop." She giggles. Hinata is next, as he tells her words she can't really understand. "The chorus part? You were like WOW! And then you were like BOOM in the..."

Kageyama is the last one to congratulate her. "How was I, Tobio-senpai?" He smiles, and she thinks it's awfully charming. "You were pretty great, (Y/FN)." Her heart beats unusually fast as her first name escapes his lips for the first time- And she doesn't know how someone could make her name sound so beautiful.

(Y/FN) keeps her eyes on him for the longest time, and she realises her predicament. It wasn't just simple admiration anymore. "Oh no.. I'm in love." (Y/FN) whispers to herself.
