THE SPAWNS

Chapter I—Jayden

The Correct Term is Hangover

I pressed my head against the cool glass of the window, watching the trees pass in a blur. I couldn’t even tell the kind. And I was getting a bit woozy.

           We were definitely speeding.

I should have been the one driving; this was my car after all. Only reason why I had agreed was because I hadn’t slept all night. Stupid ‘goodbye party’ which consistently just meant a reason to get drunk on my money, and then dragging my drunk ass back to the dorms and then pack my things because I had delayed it as much as I could, while concentrating very hard on not throwing up. Lovely evening, let’s do this again.

“Jaaaaydeeeeen, JAY-JAY-DEEEEN,” a piercing voice beside me had me jump in surprise.

I groaned rubbing my eyes, moving away from the window. “Dammit, honestly how to you do that high pitch voice?”

“It’s a family thing!” Cole shrugged and threw something on me, bumping on my shoulder and falling on my lap. “Your stinking phone is ringing, pick up already!”

I groaned again, and then looked at the caller ID. Maika. I suddenly felt a little less crappy.

            “Hi Mai”

“You’re drunk, you’re soooo drunk my friend I can smell the alcohol in your breath,” the melodic voice of my friend greeted me.

I laughed soundlessly, rubbing my eyes again. “The correct term is hangover.”

            “If I weren’t such a good friend,”

“The best,” I interrupted, smiling, hand at my temple now.

“Yes, if I wasn’t the best friend out there I would be shouting in your ear right now, shouting Jayden Eaton!”

I chuckled. “You’re kind of borderline shouting there, Maika.”

She laughed. “Whiner, you’re such a whiner!”

“Is that why you called, to tell me I’m drunk and call me a whiner?”

Cole leaned his head towards me to shout in the receptor so Maika could hear, “You go Tiger! You tell him!”

I pressed my palm in Cole’s face pushing him away from me.

“Grab Cole’s ass for me, will you,” Maika was laughing on the other side of the line.

I groaned again and rolled my eyes. “Do that yourself, when we get home.”

“And that’s why I was calling,” I could see the smile she would be making right now in my head, her playful one, her nose wrinkling just a little bit. “How far away are you guys?”

“About twenty minutes tops,” I sighed and rubbed my hand over my face and then stretched a bit, trying to wake up more, “well actually with the way Cole’s speeding we’ll probably get here in five minutes.”

“Your car, it’s your car’s fault Jay,” Cole felt the need to mention. The car was a gift for my grandparents for my graduation last year. A BMW M3 E92, I didn’t understand the big fuss about it though. I loved the car, sure, but with the kind of cars they had in their garage it wasn’t that big of a deal. Heck, even with the car Cole had at home and the one his parents had he shouldn’t be enjoying this so much.

“Alright, well I’ll head over to your place as soon as my fathers stop hugging me and telling me how much I’ve grown.” I’m sure she was rolling her eyes just then. “I’m eighteen damn it, I started my period at twelve, I ain’t growing anymore.”

“Aw, another of those, sharing too much information moments that I’m so fond of,” I said in a fake nice voice.

Her voice was her playful-evil when she answered. “You started it when I walked in on you…”

“Shut up,” I cut her before she said more. I knew exactly what she was going to say.

“Fine! Anyway, I should get back to the hystericals. I actually had to hide in the freaking bathroom to call you. I’m telling you,” she whined “I can hear them scratching away on my door with their manicured hands.”

“Please, they’re not that gay,” I snorted.

“Somehow, I think I should take offense to this.” She was narrowing her eyes, I just knew it.

I was almost unsettling how well I knew this girl. I smiled. “I missed you Mai.”

“Missed you too, wanker,” she laughed.

           I groaned. “Oh shut up!”

“See yoooou,” she just answered in her since song voice, surly grinning from ear to ear and ended the call.

I shut the phone smiling at it, and then threw it back on my bags on the back seat.

“Honestly man, what’s up?” I asked, stretching my arms again. “Why are you in such a hurry to get home? You miss watching your parents making out on every surface possible? Or is it your cat? You’re missing your cat, aren’t you?”

“I told you Jay, it’s the car” Cole rubbed his cheek on the steering wheel for emphasis.

I snorted. “Yeah, right! It’s your cat!”

“Don’t you ‘yeah, right’ me,” he exclaimed, tapping the top of my head with his finger. That hurt.

           “God dammit, my head

“Jayden, my brother, just rub some dirt on it. Pain is all a mental thing, it’s not real. It’s just electric current going through your brain.”

“So, if I punched you in the face right now, the pain wouldn’t be real so you shouldn’t get back at me for it?” I smirked.

Cole was silent, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel and then took a deep breath and looked at me, with the kind of face you make when you’re about to tell someone they have cancer. “Jayden, you have a small penis.”

“Oh god dammit,” I groaned and punched his arm.

And Cole laughed, his whole-hearted laugh, the one where he was throwing his head back, mouth wide open. I should be making a dirty joke right now with the face he was making.

Instead, I turned my head and looked outside. Usually I would have been in a better mood, but the stinking hangover was getting the best of me, and my mouth was pasty, and I could taste my bad breath. I wish I had gum. I wish I had a bottle of water. I wish I was in my bed, my real bed, the one at home. I wished I wouldn’t have to talk about how glorious my first year at University had been with my parents when I arrive. I wished I could just go upstairs and crawl under my sheets.

“You got any news about your sister,” Cole finally asked, his voice serious this time, concerned.

           My little sister…

“Last time I talked with my Dad he said she wasn’t worse,” I trailed, sighing, looking out the window.

“She’s not better though,” Cole just stated.

“No… I know she misses me; she doesn’t want to say it too much. She misses, you know, the whole gang being together all the time. So that makes her gloomier. It’s not really helping…”

I could see Cole frowning more and more as I spoke. “Poor Beth…”

“Yeah, I know. At least Dad told me she plays all the time. She loves it and Alex says music therapy does wonders. She’s better than Dad now and Grandpa.”

The corner of Cole’s mouth lifted just a little. “Well, at least you’ll be home now so she’ll be happier,” he sighed.

           I nodded, but didn’t speak.

Lilibeth, my little sister, had always been quiet and reserved as she grew up. My Mom had even told me, and I could almost remember, that when she was a baby, she barely ever cried. At first, my parents just thought it was her personality, but being friends with Alex, a psychologist, they had to admit that being reserved that way, always quiet, always looking sad, wasn’t normal.

Alex had many conversations with her, trying to diagnose something. Mom and Dad even brought her to the hospital to do some tests but there was never anything concluding. Alex thought it was some kind of form of MDD, maybe a bit of Asperger Syndrome, or mild bipolarity. She didn’t fit perfectly in anything though. She was just sad a lot. And then she would get angry with herself because she was sad and she knew she was worrying us.

Alex’s best guess was that because Mom hadn’t been able to take care of Lilibeth for the first few months because she was so weak after giving birth—I actually think she had one of those after-giving-birth depressions because of all the stress she had before—that had affected her, and so that’s why she was more fragile on a psychological level. She wasn’t stupid though, far far from it. She had always been very, very intelligent.

           She was just… sad…

I tried my best growing up, making her happy, making her laugh, and I know that most of the time she was, but there were other times, when she would just sit on the couch and watch outside with just the saddest eyes, and it’s during those moments that I wished I could protect her more, even if it was from her own dark thoughts.

Leaving her to go to college had been hard, but I did call her almost every two days, and whenever I had vacation or any kind of break I would head off to my house—during March break we actually all went to Hawaii, Mom loved it there, and Lilibeth had been smiling and laughing every day none-stop.

Still, I was eager to get home and hug her and make sure she was okay. That was my job—to make sure she was okay, and if she wasn’t, make her okay.
