Chapter 8

I knocked on the front door of the home that belonged to the girl named Clara.

"I told you, I'm not letting you in!" she yelled.

"It's not the Doctor," I tried. "My name's Rose."

There was silence for a bit and then the door swung open. I took a step back out of surprise.

"You're the girl that was just at the shop," she remembered me. "You gave me that lunatic's phone number," she said, pointing behind me, to where I assumed the Doctor was standing, probably with that goofy smile spread across his face.

"You see, Clara - that's your name isn't it? - that man isn't really a lunatic. He's mad, but more like mad-excited than mad-delusional, if that makes any sense at all..."

"No, not really." Clara looked confused, but willing to listen further. Amused almost.

"Well..Anyway, he and I are traveling together. We were wondering if you'd like to come along?" I tried explaining.

"Why would you want me to come? We've only just met," she frowned.

"No, we met a half an hour ago at a store and you asked me for help. You trusted that I would be able to help you, and I trust that this man behind me can help the both of us...because he is /wonderful/," I used my Spock logic on her.

Clara looked me up and down.

"How are we traveling? By way of...box?" She laughed.

"Yes."

"You're crazy," she said, "and I'm not sure why...but I like you."

"Does that mean you'll come?"

"Fine," she said. "I'll go with you."

"Good, I'm gl-" I started.

Clara interrupted, "But he has to stay here. I don't trust monks."

"He's not really a monk, he's just dressed that way."

Clara did not look amused.

I looked back at the Doctor. He looked hurt, but he nodded. I figured that if I showed Clara the TARDIS that might somehow help her trust the Doctor more. He and the TARDIS are connected in almost a surreal way.

"Alright, Clara. If you'll step into that box behind us, I'll show you why it's worth traveling with me and the Doctor," I smiled.

"Hey, I don't swing that way," Clara said, her face serious.

"Yeah, neither do I. It's not a snog-box if that's what you're thinking," I laughed. "Just come with me."

I turned around and gave the Doctor that said 'Can you believe this girl?' but I was mostly joking.

I walked over to the Doctor holding out my hand.

"What?" He asked.

"The key..." I reminded him.

"You didn't keep yours?" He asked, sadly.

"No I did. But the lock's probably changed, right?"

"Oh. Yes. Yes, it has," he said, searching himself for the TARDIS key.

I laughed as he located the key in a secret pocket in his monk robes.

He pressed the cold metal into my hand and I raised it to my lips. I kissed the key to symbolize...what exactly? That I'm going to stay? Probably. And forever this time.

The Doctor smiled, and his eyes smiled too. I could tell it had been a while since they had done that.

I practically skipped back to the TARDIS, looking back over my shoulder to see Clara reluctantly following me.

"What's so special about this box?" Clara looked at the phone receiver and picked it up, placing it over her ear. "It doesn't even make calls."

"Well, you called it," I told her.

"Only because you gave me the number," Clara argued.

"Yes. And that is the best thing I'll ever be able to do for you."

Without hesitating any further, I pushed the key into the lock and gave it a twist. I heard the click of the door opening.

I waited a minute before I opened the door.

"Hold on, I've always wanted to say this..." I said.

"Oh just open the door!" Clara urged.

"Prepare...to be amazed!" I said, satisfied, and pushed the doors.

I stood aside and allowed Clara to bask in the glory of the TARDIS.

"But..." She said. "...but..."

"Go ahead," I smiled.

Clara exchanged a sideways glance with me before she ran around the exterior of the box.

I chuckled to myself, remembering the day I had stood in her position.

Clara finished her round by running through the doors into the inside of the TARDIS to make sure it wasn't some illusion.

"So what do you think?" I mused.

"It's...it's..."

"/Yes?/"

"It's smaller on the outside," she finally spit out.

"Well...that's...original, I suppose," I shrugged at her abnormality.

"How?" She ignored my comment.

"Welcome to the TARDIS. That's Time and Relative Dimension in Space," I allowed that to sink in a bit.

"You're going to need to help me. You're talking to a girl who doesn't know how to work the Internet..." Clara told me.

"Remind me to help you with that later...anyway, the TARDIS is a time machine but it's also more than that. It can travel anywhere in the universe," I explained.

"You say that so casually, Rose, but honestly what you mean is that we have access to all of history," she checked her understanding.

"Anywhere you want to go. Any/when/ you want to go. I do believe the Doctor once said to me 'We're going always...'" I glorified it.

"Wow...this is fantastic!" Clara exclaimed.

"Does that mean you're in?" I asked excitedly.

"In what?" She had already forgotten.

"Are you going to travel with me and the Doctor?" I reminded her.

"What's the catch?" She asked, skeptically.

"No catch."

"Alright then let me rephrase...what are the conditions?" Clara asked slyly.

"It's really more of a free will thing," I said.

"Why me?" She asked.

This one I had to think about. I had never asked the Doctor why he had chosen me or any of his companions, but I had an idea why.

"The Doctor...he never knows /why/...he only knows...who..." I stated.

Clara hesitated before asking her next question. "Is it...is it dangerous?"

I drew in a breath, "Sometimes..."

"Good. Yes, I'll come," she smiled.

"You will!?"

"Hell, yeah, I'll come. I need a bit of excitement in this life...to be honest it hasn't been all that wonderful lately."

"Oh, I'm sorry. Do you want to ta-" I started.

"Nooo thank you. I've done quite enough talking about it lately, I just need to get away," Clara said.

"Good, yes we can do that?" I nodded.

"What can we do before I have to be back tonight?" Clara asked.

"Clara, this is a time machine. We could be gone for years, but when we come back only a second would have passed," I said.

"Wicked!"

"So shall I get the Doctor?"

Clara nodded.

I stuck my head out of the door.

"Doctor, she's on board! Let's go everywhere!"
