CHAPTER TWENTY SIX: Goodbyes & Happy Endings

Amara Abdullahi

Good byes. What's so good about them? I never understood that term because saying bye to someone you love and care for is never good. Especially when saying it to someone you care about and have known practically your whole life. Like now, in half an hour Ahmed's plane is going to take off. He's going to be gone for a very long time, possibly even forever. Everyone is gathered around in the airport saying their good byes to him. This reminds of the day he came back and now we were just getting used to him being here. Damn, that feels like that was a life time ago. "Be happy okay?" He said as he gave Zubair a pat on the back.

He suddenly whispered something in Zubair's ear quietly. I wonder what he said to him. Shrugging my shoulders, I turned back around and continued my conversation with Amy. Pretty soon it was time for him to leave. I couldn't help but turn away from him as he began to approach me. I don't know why I suddenly feel like I'm about to cry.

"You're one of my best friends, you know that?" Ahmed said with a five mile smile on his face.

"I know." I replied with a smirk.

"Let's make a pack. We'll never stop being friends okay? No matter what. Always and forever." He responded in a serious tone.

"Always and forever."

I couldn't help but cry even harder at the memory. Everything was so easy then. We were just friends who felt comfortable around each other. Who felt like they could tell each other anything. I wish that was the case now.

"Hey, Mara." He said as he walked up to me.

"Hey..." I replied in a weak tone. I turned around as I wiped away the tears off of my cheeks. I can't cry, not now.

"Don't cry, please. I'm just a phone call away."

"It's not the same." I responded as I tried to stop my tears.

"Why isn't it?" He asked, with his eyebrows raised. It was like he thought I was ridiculous to even think that. " We're still friends remember? Always and forever." He added reassuringly.

"Always and forever."

"So please don't cry, you know I can't handle seeing tears in your eyes."

It's true, he'd always freak out when I cried. I remember when we were 10 years old, I was crying because of my dad and when Ahmed saw me... he did everything in his power to make me smile again. That's how he was always like... I'm going to miss him and his goofiness.

Suddenly Aunty Sarah gave Ahmed a hug and kiss and started crying again.

"We're going to miss you." Hamid said in a sad tone.

"Bye, big bro." Amy added, joining the hug session.

"I love you guys."

Just as he was leaving, I turned around and accidentally bumped into someone. "Sorry," We both said at the same time. The pretty girl leaned down and grabbed my bag off of the ground. "Thanks." I responded once she handed it back to me. "Are you okay?" The guy behind her asked worriedly.

"Yeah Alhamdulilah I am. Let's go your brother is probably waiting," She responded as she fixed up her hijab. The pretty girl looked at me for a little while as if analyzing the look on my face with concern.

"I'm sorry to pry but, are you alright?" She asked me.

"Yeah, I'm okay. Just saying goodbye to an old friend and it's taken a toll on me." I responded.

"I hope everything works out for you." She responded with a gentle smile. For some reason, it felt like I could understand her. As if she was holding a lot in as well and is trying to take it day by day.

"Thanks, you too."

They both then said salam and then walked away, they must be new here. Makes sense, I thought to myself with a shrug. "Come on." Amy said with a sniff. Oh no she's starting to cry again.

"It's okay Ames." I said reassuringly.

He'll be okay...

2 months later

A lot has changed over the last couple months such as, I got accepted into the university of Miami and my family is making both Zubair and I set a date for our wedding. We both came to the agreement that we wanted to only have the nikkah in a month and then the actual wedding ceremony in the summer. "Hey can you go check on Juwa for me?" Amran asked as she laid down on her bed. She's been up all night taking care of Juwa because she was sick. "Yeah, sure." I replied as I walked to where my niece was. Mashallah she looks so big now for just a 5 month old. Kneeling down, I picked her up and put her on my lap. I love spending time with her. She always makes me smile even when I'm sad.

"Hey cutie." I cooed as I rocked her back and forth in my arms. Holding her like this makes me think of when I have a kid of my own. How would it feel like to be a mother? Thinking about stuff like this makes me feel excited for the future."Assalamualaikum my habibties." Dad said as he walked inside the living room.

"Salam." Amran and I both responded.

He immediately walked up to Juwa and held her in his arms. "It's so weird, I never thought I'd see the day where dad would be holding my child. I should take a picture!" Amran got up and grabbed her cellphone. You know, I didn't see all of this happening either. If someone would have told me that dad would come back, we had another brother, mom was healthy  and I'd be marrying Zubair Hassan, I wouldn't have believed them. Allah does really know what's best.

He puts you through so many obstacles so that the outcome would be that much better. "I know. I never thought I'd be holding my grandchild either." He responded as he continued to rock Juwa back and forth. Suddenly Mahirah ran downstairs looking very upset. "Why weren't you here for me!? Did you not love me?" She cried. I never really thought how him coming back would effect her. "You left me and never came back once!"

Dad gave her a really sad look. As he got up, he walked towards her and picked her up. "Honey, it wasn't that at all. I left because I loved you. I needed to protect you. I needed to protect a precious princess like you."A tear leaked out of his hazel eyes as he knelt down to her level.

"Really?" She snuffled. "Okay."

Zubair Hassan

"I'm ready." Hamid exclaimed with a determined look in his eyes.

"Are you sure?" I asked feeling nervous for him.

I mean he's about to do something big, something that'll change his life forever. "Yeah." He said with confidence, opening up the envelope. The moment he looked at it his eyes went wide and his jaw dropped.

"I got in! I can't believe it!"

"Congrats bro." I responded genuinely happy for him.

The only downside is that he's going to leave for a long time. But I'm still happy for him. I mean getting the chance to play on a real competitive soccer team doesn't happen a lot. So when the chance comes of course you have to go for it.

"This all is so hard to believe you know? I never would've thought that I would get a soccer scholarship to the college of my dreams. I never thought that my dad would come back and I did not expect that you and Amara would get married," He said with a sigh. "We never know what's gonna happen." I responded in deep thought. He suddenly got up and grabbed his phone off of the counter along with his keys. "You're right. I have something I need to do." He had a look of determination in his eyes.

"Before I leave I really need to talk to someone. I've been keeping this in for so long and I need to get it out."

I immediately knew what he was talking about. I mean every time he's around her he freezes up. I know exactly how he feels, hell I've been feeling it for so long. "Talk to her parents first." I told him.

"I should, but I also don't want to rush into anything. Who knows if she even feels the same way." He gave me a look of hesitation. "You're waisting time. Tell her before you leave. Maybe you guys can work something out. Just do it the right way," I advised him."I'm going," He said after a moment of silence. Patting his back, I give him a look of reassurance.

"You got this."

One Year Later

Third Person

Today was the day everyone has been waiting for. After a long year of focusing on school and work they finally set the date for their wedding. Amara smiled as she looked at herself through the full length mirror. Her hair was put in a pretty up do, her make up was done to perfection and her dress was to die for.

She never thought of herself as pretty before but today she felt like a princess. She examined the dress that belonged to her mother and sighed. She always admired this dress even when she was little. She swore to herself that this would be the dress she was going to wear on her wedding day.

"You look amazing," Her mother said as she looked at her daughter lovingly. Amara walked up to her mother and gave her a hug. "Thank you Umma. Thank you for fighting off cancer." She cried.

Thank you Allah, she prayed.

"Aw honey don't cry. It's your wedding day!" Her mother exclaimed as she wiped off her daughters tears. Amara wiped her tears and smiled. She felt over the moon today as if she's walking on air. Verily through every hardship comes ease, that was her favorite Aya in the Quran. Suddenly there was a knock on their door and in came Amran, Mahirah and Amelia. They all stared at Amara in awe. "Oh my gosh, Mar Mar you look like a princess!" Mahirah exclaimed. Amara went up to her and picked Mahirah up. "You're the real princess." She responded.

"Come on sis. Everyone is waiting for you!"Amran said as she grabbed her arm. Her mother held on to her other arm while Amelia and Mahirah walked in front. They all exited the room and into the main area where all of her female relatives were. The men had their own section where they'd celebrate with the groom.

"Wow, my sister-in -law is so pretty. She is way out of my brother's league." Bayla said to one of her friends. Once Amara was seated the festivities began.

After a little while the groom and his men walked into the room. The men being Hamid, Jamal, Amir, Zakariya and believe it or not, Ahmed. Amara was quickly given a shawl to cover herself up in their presence. Zubair sat next to her as they both posed for photos. "You look beautiful." He whispered in her ear. She immediately started to blush, not just because of what he said but also because of their close proximity. "I'm truly lucky to able to call you my wife."

"I'm lucky to be able to call you my husband." She said sincerely.

They were interrupted when Bayla sat in between them so she could be in a picture. But they still looked at each other before turning to face the photographer.

She's finally his, he's finally hers. I can't believe I'm marrying the guy I used to refer to as Ken doll, she thought with a smile. He's my Ken!
