I walk with the girls just after we finish our second last OWL Transfiguration is the only one more we have left. I can't believe I'm doing OWl's for the second time, Ahead of us the Marauders are messing around and joking with each other, I shake my head looking at them with a small smile. We end up settling under a tree nest to the lake,
"Here someone quiz me for transfiguration," Lily tells us rummaging through her bags for her flashcards, Marlene and I groan and lay down, me using her stomach as a pillow,
"Nooooo why?" Marlene whines ready for this to be over, she was ready for it to be over when we started doing extra studying for it in the first place.
"Because I really need to do well on it!" Lily huffs her voice full of stress before my eyes follow Alice walking over to Lily and sitting behind her starting to braid her hair and humming a song that only Alice seems to know. I watch as Lily visibly sags her shoulders, that is the only thing that seems to calm all of us. When any of us are stressed Alice will do this for us, I close my eyes taking in the sun by the lake, and listen to Alice humming softly. We sit there peacefully for a while but with the Marauders around there is no such thing as peace...at least not for long,
"All right Snivellus?" James calls out loudly and I immediately sit up my eyes widening when I realise what's happening. Before I'm able to do anything Lily is already making her way over there looking furious, I jump up and follow behind her. From where we are Snape grabs his wand so quickly like he is expecting something to happen,
"Expelliarmus!" James says the spell reacting instantly, Snape's wand flies twelve feet into the air. Sirius let out a bark of laughter,
"Impedimenta!" he said, pointing his wand at Snape who was knocked out of the way while he was reaching for his wand. Students in the area heard the commotion gathering around to watch something they had seen a million times. But it was no less entertaining than other times. James and Sirius advance on him, wands raised, James glances over his shoulder looking at the girls but he doesn't see Lily and I approaching and watching. Peter was on his feet now, watching eagerly,
"How'd the exam go, Snivelly?" James asks in a taunting tone and I roll my eyes. As much as I don't like Severus he doesn't deserve this,
"I was watching him, his nose was touching the parchment," Sirius mocks, "There'll be great grease marks all over it, they won't be able to read a word." Ok, I know he needs to wash his hair but seriously Sirius? I think as I continue to slowly make my way over behind Lily,
"You – wait," He says puffed, staring up at James with an expression of purest loathing, "You – wait!"
"Wait for what?" Sirius says coolly, "What're you going to do, Snivelly, wipe your nose on us?" Snape let out a stream of mixed swear words and hexes, but with his wand ten feet away nothing happened.
"Wash out your mouth," said James coldly. "Scourgify!"
Pink soap bubbles streamed from Snape's mouth at once, the froth was covering his lips, making him gag,
"Leave him ALONE!" Lily yells stroming up to where James and Sirius are with Snape while I follow behind her rolling my eyes at the whole situation. I look to Snape and give him a don't you dare look, James and Sirius turn around James's free hand immediately goes to his hair messing it up,
"All right, Evans?" said James, and the tone of his voice was suddenly pleasant, deeper, more mature.
"Leave him alone. What's he done to you?" Lily repeats as she looks at James with every sign of distaste,
"Well," James starts fake thinking, "it's more the fact that he exists if you know what I mean..." He says his voice amused and kinda flirty. Most of the students laughed, Sirius and Peter included, but Remus didn't he was just ignoring the situation by reading.
"You think you're funny," she said coldly, I mean he is most of the time, I think to myself because there is no way I'm getting in between Lily when she's pissed at James, "But you're just an arrogant, bullying toerag, Potter. Leave him alone."
"I will if you go out with me, Evans," said James quickly. 'Go on ... go out with me and I'll never lay a wand on old Snivelly again,"
"James this is not the way to go with this," I tell him from behind Lily but he doesn't notice me. Behind him, the Impediment Jinx was wearing off. Snape was beginning to inch towards his fallen wand, spitting out soapsuds as he crawled.
"I wouldn't go out with you if it was a choice between you and the giant squid," Lily spits out glaring at James,
"Bad luck, Prongs," Sirius tells James briskly. Snape had directed his wand straight at James, there was a flash of light and a gash appeared on the side of James's face, spattering his robes with blood. James whirled around a flash of light later Snape was hanging upside-down in the air, his robes falling over his head to reveal skinny, pallid legs and a pair of greying underpants. The small crowd cheered and Sirius, James, and Wormtail roared with laughter.
"Let him down!" Lily yells with a furious expression,
"Certainly," James says and he jerked his wand upwards. Snape fell into a crumpled heap on the ground. Disentangling himself from his robes he got quickly to his feet, wand up.
"Petrificus Totalus!" Sirius hexes him and Snape is keeled over, rigid as a board.
"LEAVE HIM ALONE!" Lily shouts and I wince this will not end well in any world. She had her own wand out now, James and Sirius eye it warily.
"Ah, Evans, don't make me hex you," said James earnestly not wanting to hex his beloved lily flower, I think internally gagging,
"Take the curse off him, then!" James sighed deeply at Lily's words, before turning to Snape and muttered the counter-curse.
"You're lucky Evans was here, Snivellus –"
"I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!" Snape yells and I glance towards the Slytherins only noticing them now that they are laughing at Lily,
"Fine," She says coldly "I won't bother in the future. And I'd wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus." I blink staring at Lily shocked at how quickly she switched up. I notice Alice, Mary, and Marlene coming closer looking furious at what Snape said. I turn to Snape marching forward so I'm just in front of James but beside him,
"Apologise to Evans!" James roars at Snape, his wand pointing at him threateningly,
"I don't want you to make him apologise," Lily shouts at James starting to attack him. "You're as bad as he is." Ok a bit far, no he isn't, I think wincing at James's dejected face,
"What?" James yelps staring at Lily shocked and horrified, "I'd NEVER call you a – you-know-what!"
"Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you've just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can – I'm surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me SICK." Lily bursts out before she turns on her heel and hurries away with Alice, Mary, and Marlene following behind her to console the girl.
"Evans!" James shouts after her, "Hey, EVANS!" But Lily doesn't look back, I let out a small sigh slightly feeling back for James,
"What is it with her?" said James, trying and failing to look as though this was a throwaway question of no real importance to him, it was through if you knew him you knew it was,
"Reading between the lines, I'd say she thinks you're a bit conceited, mate," Sirius says sniffling a laugh before I slap the back of his head playfully,
"And you're not?" I scoff rolling my eyes, and I notice James stepping forward to attack Snape again so I stick my leg out with a thud. Lily will thank me for that, plus I want first dips on Snape, I think as he trips over my ankle and I turn my attention to Snape, "And you Snape!" I growl marching forward and grabbing him by his robe and collar in one quick movement. Snape's eyes widen and he pales in an instant. Gulping his eyes flick to mine and if possible his eyes widen further and that is a confirmation that my eyes are a bright red now. "You disgusting! Slimy! Greasy! Dark magic loving! Arse hat! How dare you call Lily a Mudblood!" I grip his collar tighter my knuckle going white while the other clenches at my side. As I'm blocking everyone's view I see Snape's eyes fill with regret but I can't bring myself to care.
I hear a few people gasp as I use the word not expecting me to say it at all, when I look at the crowd around me I spot Barty, Evan, and Regulus amongst the crowd. Evan and Barty have their mouths open in shock, never seeing this darker, angrier, more violent side of me. they only hold my attention for a second before my eyes meet Avery, Mulciber, and the Carrows. Their eyes are wide looking at me with a new light. Like they finally see that I'm dangerous. My attention flicks back to Snape and I am now completely focused on him, "I swear the next time I see you near Lily when she doesn't want you even breathing the same air as her I will hurt you much more than you can ever imagine," I say in a low deadly calm voice before letting go of my grip on Snape and turning on my heel walking in the same direction the girls left a few moments before,
"You're just a coward! Like a filthy blood-traitor could do anythi-" Snape yells out to me I hear a few Slytherins start snickering. In an instant, I have turned back around and don't bother pulling out my wand to show a display of power, Reduto! I scream in my head flicking my hand slightly aiming the spell at Snape's head. Snape's eyes widen and he ducks just in time,
"Don't test me, Snape!" I yell at him not caring for the sight of McGonagall and Slughorn coming toward us,
"Sectumsempra!" He fires the curse at me and I step to the side easily missing it and I march toward him garb him by the collar and let my fist meet his nose with a crack.
"Miss Gryffindor!" McGonagall says firmly and I look up and meet her eyes, before walking off in the direction the girls went, nobody stops me as I go, intending to find Lily and the girls to help comfort her.
