Everyone at school knows you and Gunwook hate each other. Just like every other academic rivals, you can't stand each other's guts. He does everything to not see you in his vicinity and so do you.

Always being first and second rank makes you two more competitive. If Gunwook is ranks first one semester, then you are second. Then in the next semester, he will be the second while you rank first. It always goes like this that you know there's not gonna be an end to it.

The major problem you suffer, other than seeing him everyday at school, is the fact that his parents and your parents are best friends. They went to college together and they always tell you your father and his father were the top students.

"Did I tell you that Mr. Park and I went to the same college and were the top students?" Your father says as he looks at you.

A tousand of times now, you thought.

Gunwook's father laughs as he nods approvingly.

This is what your second problem is, your parents and his parents take you to dinner every few weeks and have dinner. You have to endure the excruciating pain of seeing his face and his fake nice persona towards your parents.

"We were always working for the first rank and never fought about it. We were best of friends just like you kids. If anything, the competitiveness made us closer," your father says proudly.

If only he knew, you thought as you glare at Gunwook while he was already doing so. You turn your head and give smile to your father.

"I never thought they could be!" Mr. Park says as his wife smiles.

And the conversation always goes like this.

Your mother sips her wine and cleans her throat. She then turns her attention towards Mrs. Park.

You prefer what they talk since they always bring fun topics and you chime into the conversation.

"So, Dayeon-ah, Is Seowook finishing college?" your mother asks, referring to Gunwook's brother.

Mrs. Park sets down her own glass. "Yes, he graduates this year."

"Wow, that's amazing," your mom says, grinning. The two fathers are engaged in their own conversations while your mom and Mrs. Park are on their own. The only ones left were you and Gunwook but you are listening to the mothers while Gunwook pretends like he is not.

"Very. I am pushing him to marry a nice girl but kids these days don't like commitments," Mrs. Park says, rolling her eyes.

Gunwook visibly looked uncomfortable and you smirked. This could be one topic you can bully him for and you are happy.

"Well, let the future take care of it," your mom says encouragingly. You see Gunwook sipping from his water and looking past you.

Mrs. Park shrugs. "I hope so. I mean, we have to play part at some point so we will give them choices they can't see. Like Y/N and Gunwook who are so engaged in school. They have no time for dating."

Gunwook scoffs as he looks at you with a knowing smile. You were glad they didn't notice because then they'll think you're abandoning your studies become of an ex you used to go out with last year.

Gunwook tortures you with that even if it's not big of a deal. For an overachieving parents like yours, this could mean a failure if they hear about it.

"Y/N will marry someone good one day, I can tell," Mrs. Park peers at you as if she's seeing your future.

"So will Gunwook," your mom replies as she touches the small of your back and slyly smiles as if she's planning something.

What that touch supposed to mean, you didn't know.

"Oh, I hope his date week with Mr. Kum's daughter will work out well." Mrs. Park's voice was hopeful. But someone was not.

Gunwook spits his water and chokes. He is coughing as his father taps his back repeatedly.

"Are you okay, son?"

"Yes, I'm fine, father," Gunwook says quietly while coughing.

For some reason, that didn't give you much excitement. Seeing him flustered, that is. If anything, you felt weird about thing that you can't explain.

Your mom looks over at Gunwook who finally gains composure. "I think he didn't expect that news."

"Well, better prepare before it's already too late." She gives your mom a smile. "Today is friday right? Mr. Kum and I talked and he said saturday would be best. How about that, Gunwook?"

Gunwook's shocked face was replaced with a horror one. "What?"

"Your date? With Yongeun?" She raises her eyebrows.

He replies in a hushed voice with "Sure" after few minutes. His eyes meet yours and you tried to give him a mischievous smile but you failed.

You don't know what's going on in your mind. Because how come you want to suddenly look pretty at dinner you have been forced to go for your whole life?

The next friday and a day before Gunwook's date (which you have no business of remembering) you rummaged through your closet to find a decent dress to wear. No, not decent. Astonishing.

After a lot of search, you gave up.

Your mom watched you being frantic. "What's wrong?"

"I can't find a dress," you said, trying to sound normal. You still have no idea why you wanted to appear decent infront of him. Must be that last week that changed you.

Your mother looks confusingly at you. "What about all of this?"

You dont have any explanation for it so you just shrugged.

"Your sister has some dresses in her closet. Go pick something," she says.

"What if she gets mad?"

"She won't be back until next month. Don't worry."

Then you scurried away to her room.

After over an hour or two, you are done with all the hair and makeup. Your mom was not a fool so she noticed the change.

"You got plans after dinner?" Your mom says, smirk playing on her lips.

"No," you replied quickly.

You are sitting at the reserved table you always sit at. Alone. And that's when you know there is some fishy thing going on.

The Park family, who usually come first, are not there and neither are your parents. They told you there have been a sick employee at work and they have to take care of them, urging you to go there first.

Now that's definitely fishy.

You sat there, looking pretty and all while waiting for your parents to arrive before the Park family does.

You were relieved when the waitress directs someone towards their sit, thinking it is your parents.

The figure bows to the waitress and when he meets your eyes, his smile faded.

Gunwook did not expect to see you there alone and you looked different at that.

Gunwook stares at you long and hard. He studies you from up and down. You can say his eyes had some sparkles but that would be an exaggeration.

"What are you doing here alone?" You asked him.

He comes back from zoning out for so long and shakes his head. "I can ask you the same."

He hates to admit it but you looked stunning. You never wore that kinda dress that shows your perfect figure. Even the makeup you had on was not much but it made you glow.

You were feeling conscious about Gunwook staring at you. You are feeling stupid now since you dress up extra for a dinner party with four middle ages and one guy you despise to see but somehow want to impress.

"My parents had to take care of a sick employee," you replied.

"Mine had to take an employee to a hospital because they did— wait, what?"

You stared at each other, traumatized look on your both faces.

"As long as I remember, our parents don't work together," Gunwook says, his arms in akimbo.

You sighed when you realise this is whole a plot.
