chapter 10
[ men ]
as much as ethan did not want to be searching for prom dresses, he saw it as the perfect opportunity to annoy jessica. there was just something about her that just really pissed him off. so if he had the opportunity to annoy her, he would take it in an instant - even if it meant going shopping for prom dresses.
ethan and bella sat next to the window as angela and jessica tried on numerous different dresses. it was obvious neither of those two was into the whole shopping thing, especially ethan.
"i like this one," jessica stated, holding up a pink dress in front of her before holding it against her body, looking in the mirror, "but i don't know about the whole one-shoulder thing," she muttered, observing the dress.
"that's ugly as fuck." ethan muttered, acting as if jessica wasn't supposed to hear it but she definitely was. the dress actually wasn't ugly, ethan knew that, but he knew that it would annoy the girl which right now was the only thing keeping him awake considering the whole thing was boring.
"makes you look like a rat, actually, scratch that. look like one in general." ethan muttered, this time making sure she didn't hear him.
"hm." jessica hummed at the boy, clearly not hearing him but giving him an annoyed look from his previous comment before putting the dress back and moving to find another. "i like this one." angela held up a long pale lavender dress up to her body, observing it just like how jessica had previously done.
"that one's pretty." ethan commented, looking the dress up and down as he inspected it. "you think?" the girl with the glasses questioned with a soft smile which ethan nodded to in response.
as angela and jess continued searching for dresses, ethan turned to bella who seemed to be just as bored as him. "you having fun there, missy?" ethan questioned, noticing her sour facial expression.
"so much fun." bella shook her head with a smile, her tone dripping in sarcasam. ethan had no idea why she chose to tag along, not that he minded or anything. just, what was the point in asking to join if you weren't going to do anything?
angela and jessica now stood side by side in front of the mirror. angela was now wearing the same lavender dress from earlier as jessica was now wearing a new hot pink dress, her hands covered in long white gloves.
"you look great, angela." ethan complimented, a warm genuine smile on his face as he looked at her. "thanks, ethan," she responded, sharing the same warm smile.
"what about me?" jessica asked, obviously offended that ethan had not complimented her, "yeah, yeah, looks fine." he shrugged her off, not bothered by the fact he had offered her.
"well, i like this one, makes my boobs look good." jessica grinned, moving her gaze from ethan to the mirror.
"hey." a man's voice was heard from outside, catching the attention of the three girls and ethan. as they turned their heads, they saw a group of grown men knocking on the window 'complimenting' the girls as a few of them whistled.
it was obvious the comments made the girls uncomfortable as it just made ethan feel disgusted by them. "fuck off." ethan stuck his middle finger up at them through the window, showing off his black leather gloves.
"nice gloves, sweetie." one of the men laughed at him, making a kissy face at him causing the rest of the men to laugh. "so men are fucking vile." ethan spoke in disgust as they walked away, turning back at the girls who were visibly uncomfortable by the situation.
"oh, god. that is uncomfortable." angela spoke in discomfort, turning herself away from the window where the men previously were. "bella, what do you think?" jessica grabbed the girl's attention who was busy writing in her notebook.
"that looks great." she commented, her voice sounding nothing but bored. "you said that about the last five dresses though." jessica pointed out with a small, but obvious, fake laugh.
"what's wrong with finding all of them great?" ethan questioned the girl who only shrugged in response. "you're not really into this, are you?" angela questioned, despite the fact that it was quite obvious.
"i actually really just want to go to this bookstore." she spoke honestly with a small shrug, her voice sounding slightly quiet. "meet you guys at the restaurant, unless you wanna come with, ethan?" she directed her attention to the boy who was absolutely thrilled to be finally leaving the place.
"yes," ethan responded almost too quickly making him clear his throat, "yeah, yeah, why not? don't want you to be alone," he commented as he stood up from his spot.
"are you sure?" jessica questioned, but it was mostly directed to bella as she clearly couldn't care less that ethan was leaving. "yeah, yeah, we'll see you in a minute." bella nodded her head, confirming it was all okay.
apparently, that 'minute' turned into an hour as neither of the two were good with directions, leaving them to have gotten lost or gone the wrong way on several occasions.
but, in the end, they finally got there. it was clear bella knew what book she wanted as she found it in only a matter of minutes and they were already on their way out of the bookstore.
bella walked out with her new purchase as ethan followed close behind. the sun had now set and the sky was dark as the two walked side by side. "fuck me, it's a bit chilly." ethan commented as the harsh, crisp cold breeze slapped ethan across the face as they exited.
"you don't say." bella replied, wrapping her jacket closer around her body. "okay, do you know where we're going because i have no fucking clue." ethan said quickly, praying that the girl had at least some idea where they were going.
"what, you don't remember?" bella said, sounding a bit alarmed that the boy didn't remember. "was... i supposed to?" ethan asked, now catching on that the girl had no idea too.
"uh, no, i'm sure we went down here, right?" bella asked, as if ethan had the answer to her question as she began walking down a skinny alleyway. "i'm sure we did not. not really in the mood to get kidnapped, you know? the idea really doesn't tickle my pickle." ethan stated, following her through it despite his gut feeling telling him not to.
before bella could respond, ethan's eyes landed on two tall man figures who were heading towards them in the alleyway. his eyes widened in alarm as he pulled bella closer to him and turned her around.
"okay, what the shit?" ethan muttered quietly, "we're just gonna go this way, now." ethan mumbled, loud enough for only bella to hear. "what, why?" she questioned, a bit too loudly for ethan's liking.
"don't ask any questions," ethan told her, quickening up his pace as he heard the men following close behind them.
"saw you two in the dress shop." one of the men said from behind them, clearly recognising them making ethan internally curse as he realised it was the men from earlier.
"hey, were you running off too?"
as they two walked away faster and faster, they found themselves in a parking lot, seemingly filled with the rest of the men from earlier. "weren't you the one who told us to fuck off?" one of the men questioned ethan as they moved closer.
"don't say anything, keep your head down." ethan muttered quietly to bella, clearly scared for her safety as she instantly nodded her head, following his instructions.
"would you look at this pretty thing?" one of the men spoke, addressing bella as they got closer. "that your boyfriend?" another one of the men laughed.
the men had created a sort of circle around them, preventing both bella and ethan from going anywhere now. "what's up, my girl?" the man looked bella up and down, licking his lips slightly.
"hey, back off." ethan spoke up, holding onto bella's arm as he looked up at the men. "did the pretty boy say something?" the man teased.
"come on, get a drink with us."
"come hang out."
"come on, girl."
the men harrassed and harrassed and harrassed and harrassed.
"leave her alone." ethan defended, pulling bella behind him in a protective matter. "what are you gonna do about it?" the man grinned at him, clearly not thinking ethan would be cable of anything.
"what's the problem? you don't like us?" the man asked in fake hurt, getting closer and closer to bella who ethan attempted to protect.
"don't touch me." bella spoke up, catching ethan's attention as he saw how a man had touched the side of her arm and tried to do it again as she moved away uncomfortably.
"hey, don't fucking touch her, man." ethan said, his voice a lot more harsher now as it was more clear that the men were starting to piss him off.
"but she's a cute little thing." the man laughed, reaching out to grab bella again. "i said don't fucking touch her." ethan hissed this time, harshly grabbing onto the man's arm.
the man grabbed ethans arm, ripping it away as he accidentally pulled off one of ethan's gloves but right now, that was the least of his concerns. suddenly, a familiar car skidded around the corner, its headlights shining brightly on them all as it came to a sudden stop in front of them.
in a matter of seconds, edward climbed out of the car, "get in the car." he instructed, his voice sounding angry. ethan looked up at the boy in confusion, how did he know where they were?
bella didn't waste a second in getting in the car, unlike ethan who continued to stand where he was next to the men. "ethan, come on." bella called out before climbing into the car, and quickly closing the door behind her.
"ethan, go." edward turned to the jaylin boy who didn't seem like he was going to move anytime soon. "don't you ever come fucking near any girl like that again." ethan ignored him, his voice low in anger as he looked at the men.
"and what are you going to do, huh?" the men laughed.
with ethan's bare hand, he grabbed onto the side of the man's face, an instant feeling of agony filling the man as he groaned in pain. "do you understand?" he asked, ignoring the groans as he grabbed tighter, not even realising what he was doing.
he felt the power rushing through his veins, all moving fastly out of his body and into the man.
the man didn't say anything, clearly too consumed with the pain as he cried out. "i said, do you understand?" ethan repeated, his tone a lot harsher now as the men looked at ethan in worry, but edward only looked at him in confusion.
the man nodded his head making ethan finally let go, throwing the man to the floor as they all scrambled away. ethan grabbed his glove off of the floor, completely avoiding eye contact with edward who looked incredibly confused as he made his way to the car.
ethan knew that if he held onto the man for a few more seconds, he would have died.
