The movie starts
(They will watch this movie in German, but the text is from the subtitles)
The wind is heard as crows caw. Beautiful scenery is shown in mountains and woods... it is peaceful. Too peaceful. Then we hear low rumbles of explosions in the distance. Now it is quiet. Too quiet
Another scene shows in the woods, it is raining. Narrow light falls into a fox den with the babies and their mother peacefully sleeping
"Cute.." Unicorn says as Illustrious headpats her
The mother vixen then feeds her young, it is still raining in the woods but the sky is now bright.
And then... the perspective changes to a battlefield.. full of dead soldiers from both sides.. gunshots are heard, all of them coming from a machine gun
The kansens are silent
Gunshots are heard as the bullets land across the battlefield, then an explosion erupts. Then another erupts across dead bodies
The perspective changes to a German trench with machine guns firing and soldiers running to their positions
"Attack! Attack! Go! Come on! Get out there! To the ladders!" A German sergeant yells as a soldier dies
Scene shows to the face of a soldier named Heinrich Gerber who is sitting alone in an area with his hands clutched to his rifle
"He looks no older than 18.." Texas says
"How can you tell?" FDG asks
"He looks young.. the fear in his face... the way he breathes.. they say it all" Texas replies
The sergeant then appears and drags Heinrich
"Heinrich, come on, move! Let's go! To the ladders!" The sergeant yells as Heinrich goes to a ladder nearby
"On my command! Charge!" The sergeant yells
"Hans?" Heinrich asks
Hans and Heinrich nod to each other as they begin to climb the ladders
"Attack! Get out there!" The sergeant yells as Hans gets shot in the head the moment he gets out of the trench
"Go charge!" The sergeant yells
"Hans? Hans?" Heinrich asks as he goes to check on Hans, but he doesn't budge
The shipgirls frown
"War is hell, and your time on earth can be very brief when you least expect it" Warspite says
"Go! Heinrich! Get out there!" The sergeant yells as he pushes Heinrich to the ladder
"Attack!" The sergeant yells once more as the soldiers begin climbing out of the trench
A shell hits the trench, Heinrich was almost hit as the other soldiers rush buy
"Keep going!" The sergeant yells as Heinrich gets back up
The German soldiers then begin to charge to the enemy trench
Soldiers around Heinrich are shooting their rifles and dying on the battlefield either by getting shot by their enemy or by explosion
"Faster! Go faster!" A soldier yells
Heinrich continues fighting his way through as 'Rat Tat Tat Tat Tat' machine gun shots are heard all around the battlefield with explosions erupting at the same time.
Heinrich continues running, then he ducks behind a blasted tree stump as he tries to catch his breath
"He can't stay there forever.. he's lucky that he even made it that far..." Jeanne d'Arc says
"A battlefield... is nothing more than a fiery hell you're walking into.." August Von Parseval says
"Take cover!" A soldier yells
The other soldiers continue charging as Heinrich hides behind the tree stump while its being shot at.
"Heinrich..! Heinrich.. Heinrich!" The sergeant from earlier yells
His voice is weak but manages to reach Heinrich even with all the noises
Heinrich crawls to him as he reaches his hand out...
but the sergeant gets shot in the cheek causing instant death
The shipgirls flinch
"These men were thrown into a meat grinder..." Cleveland says
"Poor unfortunate souls... it's sad.. but true..." Richelieu says
Heinrich gets his rifle as an explosion erupts nearby
Bang.. bang... bang... those were the sounds that came from Heinrich's rifle as a soldier drops dead by his side. He drops his rifle after he has no more ammo. He then grabs his shovel, and summons all of his courage and charges at the enemy trench
We see French soldiers trying to fight off the Germans. Heinrich then releases a war cry like a wild animal, then he slashes an enemy soldier near his neck
The screen turns black as the title appears

"What does it mean?" Albacore asks
"If I know my German correctly, it means 'All Quiet on the Western Front'." Prince of Wales replies while drinking tea

Soldiers are now seen unloading the bodies of dead German recruits. One of them is Heinrich Gerber with a bloody wound in his chest.
"You can only hope fate can be merciful to you in war.. if fate is even real, that is..." Mikasa says
They unbutton his uniform jacket and toss his uniform on to the pile while his boots land on another pile. Dozens of coffins are then seen for each soldier. Then the scene changes to a freight train with the dead men's uniforms in bundles in a boxcar. An open-bed truck, piled with loads military uniforms, pulls up outside a factory. Bundles of uniforms are tossed on a hand cart by other men.
A load of uniforms are dumped into soapy water with women washing them. A pile of half-dry, washed uniforms hang from a drying line. A washerwoman then comes and collects the uniforms which are wheeled down the hall in a hand cart. In another factory into a room full of seamstresses at sewing machines. A young seamstress takes a pile of clothes and returns to her sewing machine. She then examines a uniform jacket then starts sewing. The sewing machine rattles as it sews, then the collar name tag reads Heinrich Gerber
"Reusing the uniforms for the new recruits.. only for them to use these uniforms and most of them dying on the battlefield" Graf Zeppelin says
The scene changes to another truck, it passes by a bicyclist
'NORDDEUTSCHLAND
Frühjahr, 1917
DRITTES KRIEGSJAHR'
"Spring time in Northern Germany in the 3rd year of war... interesting setting.. I thought it would be 1914 or 1915.." Peter Strasser says
The bicyclist is then revealed, another young man no older than 18
"Judging by that cap... he's still in school.." FDG says while sighing
The scene changes to a town, the young man pedals down an alley with people walking around as the bells ring. Paul parks his bike as off-screen yells are heard
"Paul!"
"Paul!"
Paul then gets his school bag and goes to his friends
"Paul, hey. Well?" Kropp asks as Paul shakes his head
"So, what now?" Kropp asks
"Don't know" Paul replies as he shrugs his shoulders and walks by
"Does he know we're all going?" Kropp asks
"Of course" Paul says
"You're staying home?" Ludwig asks (The one with the glasses)
"My God, staying tied to your mummy's apron-strings?" Kropp asks
"And he's probably better off staying with his mum" Ark Royal says
"Here, I'll sign it for you" Franz says as he offers his hand
"Approval?" Fletcher asks
"Parent's approval I think, and by Paul's expressions... he's definitely no mama's boy" Pennsylvania replies
"You're definitely one when it comes to Ms Texas though" Hornet says as she nudges her shoulder
"S-shut your trap" Pennsylvania says
Arizona and Texas chuckle in the background
"His parents have to do that" Ludwig asks
"But they didn't. Give it here" Franz says; still offering his hand to sign
"It won't work. They'll find out" Ludwig says
"How? Are they pen pals with his father?" Kropp says as he and Franz chuckle
Paul brings out the form from his bag
"Give me your pen" Paul says
Franz checks his pockets
"I don't have one" Franz says while chuckling
"Ludwig" Paul says
"You'll be in trouble. You'll get a thrashing" Ludwig says
"Got a better idea?" Paul asks
"Turn away and never return.." KC Amagi says
"I won't be the only one left behind" Paul says
Ludwig sighs and gives Paul a pen. Paul quickly turns Ludwig around and uses his back to sign the piece of paper while Kropp and Franz watch
Kropp puts an arm around Paul
"Congratulations, Private Bäumer. You're headed to the front" Kropp says
"I'm a dead man" Paul mumbles
"Oh yes very much so..." Deutschland says
"Not helping" U-47 says
The scene shows around the school, it is empty from all rooms and corners. The Principal is heard
"You're standing here on the threshold of existence. Remember this moment. It's an important moment" The Principal says
The perspective then shows a big staircase with students crowding them. All of them have a sense of wanting grand adventure and a sense of already wanting to be soldiers
"In years to come, you will be judged on what you dared to become today. The Iron Youth of Germany!" The Principal states
"Oh how ironic.." Zara says
"My friends, you are fortunate to be living in great times"
"Horrible is more like it..." Avrora says
"Your deeds will be the water that will nourish a strong and noble root" The Principal says as we see two students goofing around with their forms
"Stand still and listen, Leinemann! The Kaiser needs soldiers, not children" The Principal states
The two pupils snap back to attention as the Principal continues his speech
"If the kaiser is Tank Fish then I will gladly-" Scharnhorst tries to say as Gneisenau headbonks
"Now is not the time schwester" Gneisenau says
"I am sure that I will see most of you here at home again soon, your sword returned to its scabbard with honor. With an Iron Cross pinned to your proud chest" The Principal says
"Yes... 'most' of them.." King George V says while shaking her head
We see the Principal with his big handlebar mustache and the teachers standing at the back of the hall while looking proud
"But don't be fooled. During the darkest hours out there as you await an attack, you may start to harbor doubts. But this is no time for weakness of mind! Any wavering, any hesitation is a betrayal of the Fatherland! Modern warfare is like a game of chess. It's never about the individual. It's always about the whole" The Principal says
"And more like the soldiers are nothing more than the pawns and pieces while the politicians and commanders are the players" AL Amagi says while quietly scoffing
"You will prove yourselves worthy of your uniforms, and break through the enemy front in Flanders. And then, in just a few weeks, you will finally march on Paris!" The Principal yells
The boys can't hold in their excitement no longer and begin shouting
"JA!" They all yell
"The hope in their faces.. little do they know of what is to come and how long they have to fight..." Ticonderoga says
"Our future, the future of Germany, lies in the hands of its greatest generation" The Principal states
The boys have proud smiles on their faces
"My friends, that's you! So, off to battle! For Kaiser, God, and Fatherland!" The Principal yells as he wraps up his speech
"JA!" They all yell again
Roars of applause from the pupils, it was a good speech
The young men toss their caps and forms into the air as they slowly fall down the stairwell. Paul and his friends yell and laugh in joy
"I don't know if delusional is the right word, but they're not mentally prepared.." Soryu says
The scene changes
In another area of the school, officers sit in a row with desks. Long lines of students volunteer for war with piles of uniforms being given
"Next. Next. Next. Next" An officer says
It was Paul's turn to get his uniform
"Bäumer, Paul. 53 Wiesengrund. Born 18th November '99. Correct?" The officer asks while reading his draft notice
"Yes, sir" Paul replies
The officer then flips the form and checks the parents' signature. He does an ink stamp
"All clear.." Laffey says
"It's not breaking the rules if you don't get caught" Z23 says
"That's like saying 'Money doesn't matter' even though you're rich" Edinburgh says
"Paul" Franz says
Paul looks over to see Franz showing off his folded uniform
"Here. Your father can be proud of you" The officer says as he gives Paul his uniform
"Ja" Paul says
"That reminds me, wouldn't.. erm... Hitler be in the war as well?" Hiryu asks
"Well given the timeline, he would've definitely been in the war... but lets continue watching.." Belfast replies
Paul then takes a look at his uniform
"Everything all right?" The officer asks
"Yes, I just want to get going at last" Paul replies
"Off you go then" The officer says
Franz, Ludwig, and Kropp are waiting with their uniforms nearby. Paul then stops as he realizes something is wrong
"Excuse me. This belongs to someone" Paul says as he gives back the uniform
The officer takes a look at it
"Yes. It was probably too small for the fellow. Happens all the time" The officer says as he removes the name tag
"Here. Take care" The officer says as he gives back the uniform
"Thank you" Paul says
The officer then drops the name tag on the floor as it reads: Heinrich Gerber
The shipgirls frown
"Like I said, reused uniforms" Graf Zeppelin says
Scene changes to the changing room
Paul carries his uniform and goes to his buddies. All the young men in the room are putting their uniforms on
"Blimey, as if they were tailor-made!" One of the men yell
"Well Ludwig, are you going to get all the girls now?" Kropp asks
"Yeah" Ludwig says as he puts on another pair of glasses while laughing
"Oh of course..." Texas says
"What's wrong Ms Texa?" Arizona asks
"You have no idea how many men flirted with me back in my day, and you have no idea how many of them I got rid off" Texas says
The shipgirls sweat
"I'm not saying I killed them" Texas says

"As long as you don't shoot us" Kropp says while chuckling
Then Franz begins to sing
"Girl, I do love you. But I can't marry you just yet. Wait another year. Then it will..." Franz sings while combing his hair but Kropp interrupts
"She won't wait Franz. She won't wait, you ladykiller" Kropp says while laughing with his friends
Scene changes to a street
The new recruits are now out of town; rifles slung over their soldiers as they march in unison
"A cup of tea, sugar and coffee, A cup of tea, sugar and coffee, and a glass of wine, and a glass of wine! Girl, I do love you. But I can't marry you just yet. Wait another year. Then it will come true. Wait another year. Then it will come true..." The soldiers sing
They continue to march and sing out of excitement, adventure, and joy. Everyone sings along with their fellow men as they all march off to war. What a start to an adventure
"They're all so confident and enthusiastic for adventure and glory..." Enterprise says
"A little weird for recruits of 1917 to still have that spirit.. but I think propaganda was strong on both sides... trying to keep the morale high especially for the recruits" Algerie says
Scene changes to an Open Troop Transport Truck
'LA MALMAISON, NORDFRANKREICH
25 km bis zur Westfront'
"Northern France, 25 km till they arrive to the front.. I wonder how they will be greeted aside from the reality of it all" Agir says
We see lieutenant Hoppe checking the men's rifles, he hands Franz's rifle back to him. He checks Kropp's rifle next, he pulls back the bolt as it makes the sound 'Ka-Chak'. He doesn't give back the gun
"Dirty gun, not something you want" Hornet says
"What's your name, soldier?" Hoppe asks
"Kropp. Albert Kropp, sir" Kropp replies
"Do you like dirty girls, Kropp?" The Lieutenant asks as Kropp struggles with the question
"Ugh, perverts" Hammann says
"It's a joke isn't it" Takao says
"Do you like dirty girls?" The Lieutenant asks again
"Nein, sir" Kropp replies
"Don't. Say. Anything" Texas says as she points towards Prinz Eugen, Atago, etc.
"Why did you sleep with one then? Report for guard duty at 3 a.m.!" Hoppe says as tosses the rifle to Kropp who barely catches it
"Oof, RIP" Columbia says
"Eh, close enough for a joke in my books" Takao says
Ludwig is next
"Gentlemen, you'll be fighting in an absolute sh*thole" Hoppe says
"Where you can be with other sh*theads and fight against your enemies who are also sh*theads~" Atago says as Yamato headbonks

Paul is cleaning his barrel quickly. Lieutenant Hoppe stands before him already
"And he might be f*cked too, like my dumb sister who is sleeping" Hornet says
He checks Paul's gun
"You'll pamper it. You'll love it. And God damn it, you'll keep it as spotless as the Holy Virgin's thighs" Hoppe says as he gives his gun back to Paul
"So basically he's telling them that their rifles are their girls now?" Blucher asks
"That's one way to put it, soldiers with their guns and sailors with their warships" Kirov says
"Do we understand each other?" Hoppe asks
"Yes, sir!" The soldiers reply
"Welcome to the 78th Infantry Reserve Regiment. We're on the Western Front now" Hoppe says
"Welcome to Paris!" The young recruits yell while laughing
"They will be welcomed into a fiery hell instead..." Kaga says
The scene changes to a field hospital
Am army doctor with his assistant go into the street, they are looking exhausted. He waves towards an arriving truck but it passes by. Two trucks go to where the doctor asks them to go but the last truck passes by. The doctor runs to the trucks
"Damn it, what happened? I have to deliver the company to the front by 6 pm." Hoppe says
"You can, but on foot. We need the trucks, Lieutenant" The army doctor says
"For the wounded no doubt... the area must be overcrowded.." Vestal says
"With all due respect, my orders-" Hoppe tries to say
"You can stick your orders up your arse! I've got 40 men here dying in the mud. Get out right now!" The army doctor commands
The Lieutenant stops arguing and turns to his recruits
"Everyone out!" Hoppe yells
The soldiers then jump out of the truck
"Come on! Make it snappy! You heard the staff surgeon!" Hoppe yells
"At least he's considerate for the patients.." Illustrious says
"Indeed... the wounded might be taken to Laon.." Saint Louis says
Scene changes
The sky is overcast, it might rain
"And here the hardships begin, God bless their souls. Even though I still don't believe in him" Jean Bart says
"Faster, soldiers! Don't fall asleep here! Come on!" Hoppe yells
Lieutenant Hoppe then goes to Franz who is falling behind
"Franz Müller, right?" Hoppe asks
"Yes, sir" Franz replies
"The commander-in-chief expects you to survive at least six weeks. Do you want to be alive in six weeks?" The Lieutenant asks
"Yes, sir" Franz replies
"Then stop dragging your feet and get a move on! Did you hear me?" Hoppe asks again
"Yes. We're not at a tea dance!" Franz says as he moves a little faster
Suddenly... a whistle is heard... BOOM and BOOM! Two shells land nearby, all of the recruits go hit the dirt as another shell lands.
"Your aim is terrible" Admiral Hipper says
"Goes for you guys as well I think" Jean Bart says
"Gas! Gas! Gas!" Hoppe yells
The recruits then start to put their gas masks
"Gas masks on!" Another officer yells
"That gentlemen, was a fat pig. If the French could aim better, they'd be scraping us off the road now with a spoon and burying us in a mess tin. But one thing is as sure as eggs is eggs" Hoppe says
Ludwig is struggling to get his gas mask on, Paul sees this and helps him
"Fat pigs don't carry gas" Hoppe says
Paul then wears his mask after helping Ludwig, but is the last to put it on
"Have you got cloth ears?" Lieutenant Hoppe asks
"No, sir. I was just trying to put on my mask" Paul replies
5 seconds of silence
"You, Paul Bäumer, will almost certainly be dead by dawn" Hoppe says
"Paul could've died if that was an actual gas attack" Phoenix says
"At least it wasn't, but if he decided to help someone in a real poison gas situation then he would be dead unless he somehow manages to put his mask on in time" Musashi says
"You should eat something, damn it" Hoppe adds
Paul swallows the insult
"Attention! Gas masks off!" Hoppe yells while taking his mask off
"Gas masks off!" An officer yells
Paul tries to take his mask off
"Not you. You keep yours on until guard duty tonight. With that bonehead there" Hoppe says as he refers to Kropp
"Line up! March! Stick together an get moving! Come on, hurry up!" Hoppe yells
Artillery rumbles in the distance
Scene changes to the trenches
"Welcome to the trenches where life is miserable" Texas says with a deadpan tone
"All they need is a good dose of reality" Georgios Averof says
"Rain is falling. Lieutenant Hoppe leads the recruits as a shell explodes near the trench and the young recruits duck. Clumps of dirt fall upon them and MG fire rattles nearby. Two soldiers are carrying an empty soup cauldron.
Paul is in the back along with Franz, he has a hard time keeping up because of the gas mask
"Paul! Paul, come on. Give me your backpack. You can carry mine next time" Franz says
Paul pushes Franz away and they continue walking down the trench
Rain keeps beating down as soldiers fire an MG and sounds of 'RAT TAT TAT TAT TAT' fill up the area. The recruits finally reach their area at the front. The soldiers already in the front look miserable.
"Congratulations, soldiers! This is your new home! Helmets off!" Hoppe yells as the recruits take their helmets off
"And these men somehow put up with these conditions.." Tallinn says
"I see the men have been enjoying my absence, Steinberger" Hoppe says
"There was gunfire all night. Their nerves are shot" Steinberger says
"Dry boots are a good remedy for that. Do you want us all to drown? Everyone pitches in! Bail out the trench! Hoppe yells
Hoppe then walks toward Paul and takes his gas mask off
"What are you waiting for Bäumer?" Hoppe asks
Paul wheezes and gasps for air, it may be raining but air is good
"Why are still standing around?" Hoppe asks the other recruits
Some other recruits use their helmets as buckets. Suddenly, a soldier speaks up
"Throw a dog a bone, it will always snap it up. Give a man power... man is a beast... drink" Katczinsky (Kat) says while smoking and Paul takes a drink out of the canteen bottle
"Accurate" Shoukaku says
"Katczinsky, come over here. Lend a hand" A soldier says
Another artillery shell lands nearby
"We'll get hit hard tonight" Katczinsky (Kat) says
Kat then turns and goes to his fellow soldiers to help them bail the water. Paul puts down his backpack and goes to his fellow recruits who are already bailing out water. Kropp, Franz, and Ludwig included.
"I'm sorry" Ludwig says, feeling guilty about the gas mask
"Forget about it" Paul says
"This isn't how I imagined it" Ludwig adds
"Well what did he expect?" Tirpitz asks
"Maybe glorious 'You Only Live Once' charges, an adventure, and other delusional war fantasies" Victorious replies
"Shut up, Ludwig" Kropp says
"My hands. I can't feel my hands anymore" Ludwig says
Katczinsky then comes by
He then grabs Ludwig's helmet
"Stick them down your trousers. That's what I always do" Kat says as he puts Ludwig's helmet in his belt area
"Wait what" The shipgirls say
"They have to warm themselves somehow" Taihou says
Some kansens look at her with a raised eyebrow
Ludwig, Paul, Franz, and Kropp then stick their hands in their underpants. It gets better after a few seconds and their expressions are relieved
The shipgirls are silent
"So are they touching their-" Zuikaku tries to ask but Kaga covers her mouth without looking
Scene changes to night time
A flare illuminates the battlefield as Paul is polishing his rifle
"You think that will make it shoot better?" Kropp asks
A rustle is heard in the dark
"Did you hear that?" Paul asks
"What?" Kropp asks back
"That sound, listen" Paul says
"There's nothing there" Kropp says
Paul continues listening and raises his rifle excitedly
"They've never even killed a man before.." Atago says
"Our first Frenchmen" Paul says
"Calm down Paulie" Kropp says
And there it is again, the rustle which is possibly not even ten yards away
"I hear it now too" Kropp says as he raises his rifle as well
"Who's there? Hey. Montrez-vous (show yourself)!" Paul whispers in a loud tone
No answer. The rustling stops then continues
Paul aims... then..
bang
A muzzle flash for a second illuminates the dark environment
"He's going to get shot back isn't he" Dunkerque says
Who Paul shot is not moving anymore
Then suddenly...
CLANG!
A bullet hits Paul's helmet and knocks it off from his head clean as he falls from the ladder and lands in a puddle
Some of the shipgirls jump at that
"Scary..." Z46 says
"Mm-hmm, I agree..." Unicorn says while nodding
"I called it" Dunkerque says as Jean Bart slaps her at the back of her head
"Owie..." Dunkerque says while rubbing her head
"We really need to stop calling things before they even happen" Jean Bart says
"But its fun" Some shipgirls say
"No, no" Kropp says
"I got hit (3x)!" Paul yells
"No, Paul. No" Kropp says
"What's going on here?" Kat asks as he walks over to the two young soldiers
"What is it?" Kat asks
"They shot at me from over there" Paul replies as Kat inspects Paul's helmet
"They saw your muzzle flash. Keep your heads down. Unless you want to catch the next bullet with your teeth, move ten meters. Shoot, then move. Shoot, then move. Understood?" Kat asks as Kropp nods
"He's definitely the commander there" Essex says
Paul puts his helmet back on as Kropp helps him get back up. They walk to another area of the trench
"Come on" Paul says as they continue walking
They climb up another two ladders and take their positions. Two flares are shot into the sky as they slowly fall. It would be a beautiful sight if it weren't for the dead corpses, dead trees, craters, dark black dirt, barbed wire, and so much more
Until...
an artillery shell hits the trench
"Take cover!" A soldier yells as another shell hits the trench
"In here! Bäumer, Kropp! You two, in here. Quick!" Kat yells
"In the bunker!" Another soldier yells
"Get in (3x)!" A soldier yells as Kropp and Paul get in the bunker
"Barrage" Rodney says
The soldiers sit in the bunker, huddling tight. It's dark. Paul and Kropp find a spot near Franz and Ludwig. Kat (Katczinsky) and Hoppe are with them
Shells hit outside. The sounds of booms do not stop. The recruits are in panic, they are shaking while the veteran soldiers sit there, just waiting for the barrage to end
Ludwig covers his ears and is scared
"'Watch what you eat' That's what my mother said.. we'll stick together, Paul" Ludwig says
"Yeah" Paul says
Another shell erupts into a boom. The roof is nearly breaking as some soil goes through\
Ludwig tries to get up and flee, but Paul holds him back
The shipgirls feel pity for the recruits
"I can't do this, Paul. I can't do this. I want to go home. I want to go home" Ludwig says
Unicorn/Z46 hug Illustrious/FDG
"All soldiers want to go home... but the thing is you can't.." Hammann says while frowning
Yorktown holds Hammann close
"Ludwig is going to die... as much as I don't want to say it.. but I won't be surprised if he dies first..." Texas says while looking down
Some coughing is heard in the room. Sounds of flares are heard outside as the light illuminates the bunker. A soldier speaks up.
"Creeping barrage" Tjaden says
The recruits look at him
"What?" Paul asks
"Every few minutes, the artillery barrage moves forward, and directly behind it, the infantry advances" Tjaden says
"What does that mean?" Kropp asks
"They're coming" Kat replies
"And be prepared.." Mutsu says
"He grins into silence. Tjaden wears his helmet. Ludwig bites his lip in fear, Paul and Kropp clutch their rifles. The men continue to sit there as if they're like laying in their deathbed
BOOM! The walls of the bunker shake. Dirt and dust fill the bunker as the walls shake. All the beams shake but they hold
A young recruit gets up and heads for the exit, Katczinsky gets up and stops him in his tracks
"Where are you going?" Kat asks
"I'll be right back" The soldier replies
"He wants to leave... reality is now really kicking in..." Ayanami says
"He's scared... it's natural to be scared, what to be ashamed off is if you're always going to be scared and not conquer your fears" Hood says
"The barrage is nearly over" Kat says
The soldier tries to still get away but Kat pushes him to a support beam
"No. Let me go" The soldier whispers
"Calm down" Kat says
"Let me out. I want to get out of here!" The soldier yells
"Calm down! Calm down.." Kat yells as he pushes the soldier again
The soldier sits back down, but he is still afraid
The bunker is starting to collapse, and the soldier makes a run for it
"He's dead" Bismarck says
"Nein!" Kat yells
An artillery shell bombs the soldier the moment he gets out, the shell rips him apart. Blood splatters across the recruits as they scream in panic and fear
Boom!
"Get out (3x)!" Kat yells
A support beam falls under the recruits. Ludwig is hitting his head against the wall over and over again. The recruits are still in panic and yelling all around
"Move! Get out! Get out of here! Everyone get out!" Kat yells
The soldiers leap up with their rifles and flee out of the bunker...
the earth shakes
the bunker collapses
The screen turns black
The kansens are silent
The screen lights up
Paul is buried underneath. He gasps for air the moment he awakens. A small ray of light appears on his face. He looks to his right, he sees a dead soldier
Suddenly
"Paul, that's paul. Albert (Kropp)! Albert, we found Paul!" Franz yells
Paul can still hardly hear. His ears are ringing.
Franz and Kropp lift beams aside
"We have to move that beam" A soldier says
They lift aside the beams that buried Paul, he is covered with mud
"Paul, are you okay? Are you okay Paul? Come on. Paul, come on. I'll help you" Kropp says
Franz and Kropp then get Paul
"Come on. Up you come. Sit down. Are you injured?" Kropp says
"Get going" A soldier says
"Paul are you injured? Can you hear me?" Franz asks
"Albert Kropp, we need your help!" Another soldier yells
"See you later, Paul" Franz says as he leaves
"See you later, Paul" Kropp says as he too leaves
The two men them move on to rescue the next soldier
Paul stares at the pale blue sky, then he gets up. Soldiers are everywhere helping their comrades, the trench is nearly destroyed and filled with craters and dirt
Kat sits down and eats a slice of bread, his face too completely dirty. Medics hurry off and carry wounded men. Katczinsky and Paul exchange looks. Kat hands him a piece of his bread, Paul eats and takes bites
"Enjoy your food, that's what I always say. I can only eat but not cook, Nevada may keep trying but I'm hopeless and she knows it" Texas says
"You'll get there one day" Montpelier says
A soldier appears
"Katczinsky, get on with it! And you, are you injured?" Steinberger asks
"No" Paul replies
"Then start collecting" Steinberger says as he throws a bag to Paul's chest
"Collect what?" Unicorn asks
"Dog tags Unicorn.." Enterprise says
"This is reality... glorifying back home but..." Bismarck says while sighing
Katczinsky then gets up
"Hard work pays off" Kat says
Paul continues eating his bread then he gets up and starts collecting dog tags. Paul limps along the destroyed trench, piled with dead. He bends down to them and breaks off their dog tags then he places them in the bag
Paul suddenly pauses, he stepped on something made of glass. He picks up a muddy pair of glasses...
Ludwig's glasses
"Oh no.." Yorktown says
Paul frantically runs along the trench until he finds a lifeless body and turns it over...
Ludwig Behm lies dead in the trench. His eye is bloody and missing a leg
Illustrious makes Unicorn look away
"Don't look..." Illustrious says as she hugs Unicorn
FDG hugs Z46
"My gods..." Nagato says
Paul is trying to fight back the tears, but he cries and mourns while trying to get the dog tag of his befallen friend
"Come on! Keep moving now! We haven't got all day!" Sergeant Steinberger yells
Paul wipes away his tears, realizing that now is not the time to cry. Paul gets a grip on himself and eventually keeps collecting dog tags
