Chapter starts:
As the text disappears, we hear plane engines and the wind gusting. The squadrons have arrived, we see them in formation as they continue flying. Tom breathes deeply as looks down to see the objectives they need to destroy.
"205, descend HOT" Tom says as he flies down, the other planes follow. They start diving, but after a while anti-aircraft fire starts to rain.
The shipgirls tense
The planes continue diving as the pilots are seen nervous in their cockpits as they slowly dodge the rain of anti-air. We see Marty in his cockpit look to his left, the glass is slowly breaking. Tense music is playing in the background
The anti-air keeps on raining but they miss every shot.
"205 to flight. Commencing flak suppression now." Tom says until suddenly a plane passes by as it tries to shoot down Tom's plane.
Tom taken by surprise looks to his left, Jesse does the same as he sees the plane. This plane has no propellers and its wings have a curved shape.
"What the hell? That's an interesting design.." Graf Zeppelin says
"It's a MiG!" Jesse yells as the plane begins to circle
"Koenig, take Goode and Lavery. Stay on the AA" Tom says
"We're on it" Bill says
"Jesse, break left. Let's hose this guy" Tom says
"Roger that" Jesse says as they break away to deal with the MiG
"Happy hunting" Marty says
"It's Bo time" Bo says
The tense music continues, the pilots are near their targets. After a while Bill, Marty, and Bo lock on, and they fire their missiles. The missiles go to their respective targets as almost each AA nearby is immediately quieted.
"That's certainly useful, I think we should try to make those" Bismarck says
"It would make all of our jobs certainly easier" Junyou says
"Three good hits. Coming around for another run for the AA" Bill states
Scene changes to Jesse and Tom who are flying trying to find the MiG
"You see him?" Tom asks
"Negative, I got nothing" Jesse replies
They continue flying for a while, but little did they know the MiG was right behind them as it begins to shoot at them
"Bandit high!" Jesse yells looking up
"Huh?" Tom asks
"Bandit high, break!" Jesse yells as the two planes break apart, the MiG decides to follow Jesse
"That was close.." Belfast says
The MiG follows Jesse as it tries to shoot him down.
"Tom, he's on me pretty good! Gonna bring him to you through the canyon!" Jesse yells as we see Tom's plane circling
"I saw we show him the lighthouse. Meet me in the middle" Tom says
Scene changes back to the other pilots as they shoot their missiles to the rest of the AA
"Enemy AA is silenced. I repeat, enemy AA is silenced" Bill says
"Copy flight leader. Approaching target now" A skyraider pilot says
Scene changes back to Jesse, the MiG is still trying to shoot at him but misses every shot. Some of those shoots being close but Jesse manages to evade.
"Okay, I have a visual on you. Break right, up and hard on my call" Tom says
"Roger that" Jesse says
We see Tom's plane nearby, as the planes arrive in the middle.
"Ready. Set. Hit it!" Tom yells as Jesse goes up while the MiG follows. Tom sees this, as he pulls up as well and shoots the MiG just in time.
"Whoo!" Tom yells as he laughs
Most of the shipgirls cheer
"Looks like the things Jesse told him when they first flew together came in use" Illustrious says
"Quite the firepower the Corsair has" Yorktown says
"The speed as well" Kaga
"Good hit Tom!" Jesse yells
"Great flying Jesse, great flying!" Tom says
Scene changes to the Panther planes. They make their way towards the bridges.
"This is Panther lead, approaching target" The pilot leader says with three other planes
The four planes make their way towards the rear bridge as they drop their bomb load. It's a direct hit
"Good hit, good hit. Rear bridge is down. Coming back around" The pilot leader says
"There is no way it's that easy" Takao says
We see Jesse and Tom arriving at the scene watching as the planes start their second run
"Let's bring it home Panthers" Tom says, but the moment he finishes saying that. We can see some vehicles nearby, the men preparing the machine guns on them.
"It seems you were right sister" Atago says
The planes are almost to their destination, but more anti-air rain comes at them.
"Flight lead, we've got AA coming from the Dragon Empery side" The Panther leader says
"They can't touch them at all..." Montpelier says
"They can either risk it for the bridge or retreat for now" Warspite says
"We can't touch 'em. Time to bug out" Tom says
"Roger that" The panther leader says as the planes break right with anti-air firing
"205, I still have ordinance. I can hit the bridge" Jesse says
"It seems he's taking the risky option. Risky but would complete the mission." Bismarck says
"It's too much AA, 211. Stand down" Tom says, but of course Jesse breaks away
"Jesse stand down, that's an order!" Tom yells as tense music starts playing again. Jesse's Corsair quickly swifts by the panthers has he starts his run.
The shipgirls tense a little but has faith
Richelieu of course prays
The anti-air guns start raining fire trying to hit the Corsair. Jesse slowly dodges, the gunners try to catch up but the plane is too fast. Jesse gets closer and closer...
then he fires his last two missiles instantly breaking the last bridge
"That's a direct hit! That's a direct hit! Bridge is down!" Jesse yells
The shipgirls breathe a sigh of relief
"Thatta boy Jesse!" Marty yells
"There we go ace!" Bo yells
"Iroquios this is 205. Both bridges have been destroyed. Returning to ship." Tom states
"Copy that 205, good work" An officer says from the radio
Jesse's plane gets beside Tom's. Tom looks at him and sees him doing a thumbs up, Tom shakes his head having a noticeable smile even with his mask. The squadrons head home
"Mission completed" Avrora says with a smile, she along with her follow grannies were amazed at the 'ear-playings' even though they were mostly confused on how they work at all
"Seems like I missed one hell of a ride huh? Intelligence has confirmed that ratline has been crippled. Well done." Cevoli says as all the pilots cheer
"Now we are all still on standby, but but everybody get yourselves cleaned up for some chow" Cevoli says as the pilots all begin to leave
"Chow?" Belfast asks
"It's how we say 'food' sometimes" Denver replies
"Let's go boys. Let's get some food" Tom says
"Good job Tom" Marty says as he taps Tom's arm
"Here's the mission report" Tom says as he gives it to Cevoli
"Well done Huder. How are you feeling?" Cevoli asks with Tom nearly leaving
"Good" Tom says with a smile
"Hmm" Cevoli says slowly nodding
"Sit down" Cevoli says as Tom sits down. Cevoli gets his chair and sits near him.
"He's definitely going to say something inspirational" Pennsylvania says
After a while of silence
"Meh" Cevoli simply says as Tom chuckles
"That feeling? That's the mundanity of a job well done" Cevoli says as Tom nods
"You know how many wars there have been in the history of mankind? No, of course not. 'Cause most wars are forgotten. All the men who fought in 'em and all the medals they won. Heroes and hardware fade to the back of the history books because it's not about war. This war never ends, there's no V-Day, there's no finish line. The real battle in all of life.. is being someone that people can count on, and that isn't defined in a single moment. You earn that with a lifetime of showing up." Cevoli says
More statements that the shipgirls know are true. The leaders of all the factions being Yorktown, Bismarck, Nagato, Elizabeth, etc. know that they are the ones who have the responsibility of looking after everything, making sure all is alright. Seniors like Enterprise, Akagi, and Kaga know that people look up to them and they have to continue watching over their juniors. Those who are big sisters have to look after their little siblings, making sure they continue to grow as good people. Legends like Mikasa, Avrora, and Georgios watch as future generations keep on developing, and look up to them for what they did during their era. Everybody has a role in their battles, and they all one day earn their stripes when deserved.
"These conflicts.. they don't define you. You don't want 'em to. Trust me" Cevoli finishes as he lights his smoke pipe and gets a bottle of booze
People like Enterprise know this is true, she used to think that kansens were just weapons for war but she eventually learned that there is more to their lives than just weapons.
"Now go get something to eat. Go on" Cevoli says as Tom begins to leave the room but..
"Hey Tom, what's the most important thing?" Cevoli asks
"Bring 'em home" Tom replies
"You did" Cevoli says as he drinks
"Well that was.. very inspirational" Essex says
"I think we all agree" Queen Elizabeth says
Scene changes to a base as pensive music plays
We see tents, some trucks driving around, and men walking everywhere. It is night time in the area, the scene focuses on a certain truck as some text appears.
"HAGARU BASE
CHOSIN RESERVOIR, NORTH KOREA
NOVEMBER 1950"
The truck stops in an area nearby as it shuts down. Both men get out, one of them carries a box as he goes to a tent. The scene then focuses on one of the men carrying two mugs with a gun behind his back. Another truck drives by as the man goes to a trench area.
"You know what else I could use? More blankets, fire, the sun maybe" He says as he gives the other mug to.. Buddy Gill
"Well at least he isn't near Jesse" Georgios says
"Another shot with Liz Taylor" Buddy says
"Jesus, Buddy you gotta stop saying that. You never had a shot with Liz" The man says
"You weren't paying attention Peters" Buddy says
"I would take feeling in my toes rather than a shot with Liz right now" Peters says as Buddy laughs a little
"You think they'll hit us tonight?" Buddy asks
"I would" Peters replies
"He jinxed it! Why would he do that?!" Intrepid yells
"You ever got anything nice to say?" Buddy asks again, but we hear a gunshot as they get ready along with the other soldiers
We see a white flare as it slowly disappears, nothing happens.. at first. One of the men get shot down as the North Koreans immediately start raining machine gun fire on them
"An attack at night time.." Ayanami says, Unicorn hugs Illustrious
"Incoming!" Peters yells
"Shit!" Buddy yells as both him and Peters get to the soldier that was shot and bring him to an area near them
"More men!" Peters yells, indistinct shouting his heard as the soldiers shoot at the North Koreans.
"Go go go!" A soldier yells as more men arrive to the trenches
The soldiers shoot back as we see many North Korean soldiers in trench positions as well. Some of them even advance a little.
Scene changes to the sleeping quarters of USS Leyte. We see Jesse with his head down reading something, Tom comes in the room
"What's going on?" Tom asks
Silence for a while as Jesse puts the book in his bed
"Looks like the mission report said I ignored my commanding officer's orders" Jesse says
The shipgirls had their eyes widened
"W-wait, Jesse should be s-safe right? He completed the mission!" Javelin yells
"Yes but.. based on what Jesse experiences... this could be bad" Graf Spee says
"But you know how this stuff works. I only wrote down what happened." Tom says as Jesse slowly nods
"I'm glad that's how you saw it Lieutenant." Jesse says
"It's what happened. Look what difference does it make? We got the job done" Tom says still not getting it
"Insubordination is not a good look in a report.." Akagi says
"Insubordination. That's what they're putting in my fitness report." Jesse says, more silence
"No, Cevoli's gotta understand that-" Tom tries to say
"It's coming from above Cevoli, Tom. The skipper's already read it." Jesse says
"Jesse I didn't want that to happen" Tom says
"What did you want to happen Mr. Academy?" Jesse asks as the silence continues
The shipgirls frown
"Sorry pal.. really hamstringed me on this one. I can't get promoted with that on my report" Jesse says as he chuckle. After a while, Tom gets up and walks to somewhere
Scene changes to the planning room where some pilots are
"You ever think we'd see a MiG?" Bill asks placing a cigarette in his mouth and lights it
"Hell I thought Goode would bail out all the way back to Brooklyn" Bo says
"You're the one who shit his pants when the MiG swooped in. You changed your diaper yet?" Marty asks while eating popcorn
"Why don't you come check?" Bo asks sarcastically
"We're lucky we made it out alive the way you two shoot" Bill says as Marty throws some popcorn at him and Bo laughs
"How's that for aim?" Marty asks as knocking is heard at the entrance
Tom is seen holding a paper
"I need your help with something" Tom says as the scene changes
"At least he's trying.." Unicorn says, a little nervous on what could happen
"All Blue Shirts on duty report to main hangar three" The PA man says as we see Tom walking to the sleeping quarters. He reaches the door as he is about to open it until..
"That's a white man's room" Jesse says from the inside as Tom leans his head listening to what Jesse is saying
"You shouldn't be in that, aye boy?" Jesse says as Tom opens the door almost silently
"They can make it up" Jesse continues as Tom enters the room and closes the door slowly
Tom then leans somewhere as Jesse looks at him while holding the book from earlier
"Every hateful word anyone's ever said to me" Jesse says as he raises the book a little, meaning he was writing them there
The shipgirls frown
"Wrote it down. Repeat it to myself. Been doing it since I was a boy. It helps" Jesse says as he walks to his bed
"He's been suffering all that ever since he was just a child..." FDG says, showing a little scary aura. One of the things she hates the most.. is that if children are hurt/abused. The Iron Blood kansens know how scary she can be when it comes to these things, and she would release her wrath if taken too far.
Tom walks near Jesse as he notices the paper Tom is holding
"What's that?" Jesse asks
"Testimonies from the guys saying how the mission was complicated, and you did the right thing. It'll fix whatever mark they put in your report." Tom replies as he hands the papers
The shipgirls smile a little, but what they have seen of Jesse so far, he probably won't accept that. And the people judging those will probably not even think twice about what Jesse did.
Jesse looks at them, then he looks at Tom
"There's.. there's a way things work you're not always gonna understand. A slap on my wrist, it's not the same as a slap on yours. This won't help" Jesse says as he sighs and gives the papers back to Tom
"I'm sticking my neck out for you." Tom says as Jesse nods
"Sticking your neck out with a piece of paper? Tom, that paper cost you nothing. Nothing! You know how tired I am of people trying to help me while looking down on me" Jesse says, as Tom looks like he was insulted at the 'looking down' part
"I'm not looking down on you. What do you want me to do?" Tom asks as Jesse shakes his head
"Just be my wingman, Pal. That's it. Forget the lifesaver a-and get in the damn water! Please Tom!" Jesse yells as Tom has his head down.
Tom with the papers leaves the room, and walks where he came.
The shipgirls frown once more
The scene changes with Jesse outside the ship sitting down
"Ensign brown? We were waiting for you in the wardroom, but you never showed" A black sailor says
"I needed some time alone" Jesse says
"Bunch of us brothers across the ship been talking. Heard you had some real good shooting yesterday, and we just wanna let you know we see you." The sailor says as he takes out something from his jacket and offers it to Jesse. It's a black box
Jesse takes it and stands up. He opens it and it reveals to be a watch. He looks at the small clock, then turns it around revealing some text behind
'Above all others'
"A bunch of us chipped in back in Cannes." The sailor says as Jesse looks at him
"How kind of them" Richelieu says
"What's your name sailor?" Jesse asks
"Fambrough. Archie Fambrough sir" Archie replies as Jesse walks to him and shakes his hand
"Jesse" He says, Archie has a smile on his face as he leaves Jesse
"Archie, tell the brothers I appreciate it" Jesse says as Archie nods
The shipgirls smile
"They must be looking up to him, since he's a colored aviator and they're not. Jesse is probably the first as well" Hood say
Scene changes to the pilots with their suits on, but an engine is heard
We see a flying vehicle, but this one is VERY unique. It landed on the carrier by slowly descending. The rotors were on top instead at the front, and it has no wings at all
The shipgirls were shocked and amazed (They did see the helicopter during the interview and pictures scene but they did not see how it landed, they just saw that it had wheels)
"What.. the... hell... is that!?!" Taihou yells
No one had an answer, they just kept watching
We see some medical men near the helicopter as they got a wounded man from it. Indistinct chattering is heard as they medical men bring him inside the ship.
"He must.. be from the... night attack earlier.." Laffey says
The pilots continue walking until Jesse heard someone
"Mississippi Brown? Charlie Ward" The man says as he walks towards Jesse
"We went to flight school together" Charlie says
"Alabama Ward" Jesse says with a smile
"The very one" Charlie says
"You're flying eggbeaters now?" Jesse asks
"The Navy must've heard I was looking for something stupid and dangerous. Besides I wouldn't feel right sharing the fixed-wing skies with a Southern legend. I always knew you'd make it, but it is damn good to see you Jesse. Although I wish it were under better circumstances" Charlie says
Some smile, some frown at the mention of the war
"Good to see you Pal" Jesse says with a smile
"Take care of yourself Mississippi" Charlie says as he taps his shoulder and runs back to his helicopter
"'Bama! I married her!" Jesse yells as Charlie stops and looks at Jesse who is raising showing his left hand revealing the wedding ring. Charlie claps as he goes back inside the cockpit. Jesse goes back to the rest of the pilots.
"Either a clap of defeat or a clap of congratulations" Jean Bart says
Scene changes to Daisy and Pam
"We're home baby" Daisy says carrying Pam while holding some letters and other things
"You wanna get down?" Daisy asks
"Mm" Pam replies
"Okay" Daisy says as she puts Pam down, she runs off to her room
Daisy puts her things down and looks at the letters
"Jesse" Daisy says as she sits down in the couch arranging which letters came first
Jesse's voice is heard as she reads the first letter
"My dear sweet angel. I hope this letter reaches you in time, because I wanted to be the first to wish you a very happy birthday. I know it's hard to plan a party across the world, but I thought of something fun we might be able to do together. Grab Pam, got something for her too." Jesse says as Daisy chuckles with a smile, she puts the letter down and gets the second one but Daisy reads it this time.
"Oh it's dark and it's cramped, in this spot we've all been. It's a place for a chick, but not a mean old hen." Daisy says as she reads the riddle
"A container?" Unicorn asks
"Probably a cabinet or something for storage" Belfast replies
Daisy gets up from the couch and goes to the kitchen. She begins searching the cabinets but finds nothing. She then goes to Pam's room where she's playing with her toys.
"It's dark and it's cramped, in this spot we've all been.." Daisy whispers as she goes to the closet and opens it. She begins searching inside until she finds a present box.
"Daddy got us a gift" Daisy whispers to Pam as she gets interested
Daisy then opens the box and gasps, she gets what's inside and its revealed to be a toy plane. Pam gets the toy and begins to play with it. The plane is a little big but small enough for Pam to play with.
"Aww, how cute" FDG says
Daisy gets another thing inside the box and it's a WAY smaller box. She opens it and it reveals some jewellery. (I think they're earrings but I'm not sure)
Daisy opens up the last letter as Jesse's voice is heard again
"Darling, I hope you found the little box in Pam's closet. I'm going to close now. I'll write you as soon as I can.
Your devoted husband. Lovingly, and completely yours. I'll love you forever
-Jesse"
As Daisy finishes reading the letter, she kisses Pam's head as the scene changes
"How hard it must be for them.." Arizona says
The scene goes into the planning room of USS Leyte, Cevoli and Leyte are shown
"Just talked to some of those injured soldiers that are arriving." Cevoli says as he scoffs and shakes his head
"They're from the 1st Marine Division" Cevoli says
"Same ones who hitched a ride with us from Quonset?" Marty asks as Cevoli nods
"They're pinned down at Hagaru Base. They're saying that it's an unspeakable hell. For every one Marine, there are six Emperinese hiding in the woods. Gets below minus 30 at night.. Those boys are holding on by their fingernails" Leyte states
"As much as I don't like that Buddy guy.. they need the reinforcements" Prinz Eugen says
"Some air support would be might welcome, hmm? Punch a hole in that wall, take away the Dragon Empery numerical advantage, give our guys a chance to get back up on their feet. This is a dangerous mission.. it's dangerous in a different way than Sinuiju okay? This is not about bridges and ratlines. This is about thousands of Emperinese soldiers hiding in the woods and shooting at you from 20 feet below." Leyte says as Bill smokes
"This is extremely hazardous duty, I am not gonna sugarcoat it. Men need help, and they need what only we can give 'em, so I'm gonna take you there. We're gonna give 'em hell, and we're gonna get those Marines back." Cevoli says as the scene changes
"This is where the fun begins.." Hornet says as she makes a small grin
