To say this summer had been rough would be an understatement. Everything was such a mess after I left the Barber's house at the start of the summer vacation. My 19th birthday was a bust, my mother and step-father making it insufferable. Jacob stayed for about 3 weeks then returned home after having a long chat with his father on the phone. It was his dad's idea for Jake to stay with me but Frank was just making things difficult as was Mrs Barber.
I haven't really seen or heard from Jake since, I tried meeting up with Ashley a few times but she was too busy with her new 'secret' boyfriend. Trying to get any information out of her about him was like trying to get blood from a stone.
But here we are today, the first day at Harvard University, my whole future is ahead of me. I was excited, Jake and I would be reunited again, it was bittersweet knowing my best friend wouldn't be here to join us, but Jakey was enough. I think... I know it's wrong but I didn't just miss him over the summer. I missed Andy too.
Walking into student halls I feel the wave of anxiety and excitement wash over me. I'd wanted to go to Harvard university to study law for as long as I could remember. When I was around 5 years old, my dad, Marco, was taken away in the back of a police car and I never saw him again until my 16th birthday. I received letters regularly from him until around the age of 13 then they suddenly stopped. My mom said it was because a 'criminal' like him wanted nothing to do with me, but in reality I found the letters stashed in her and Frank's dresser.
In the hidden letter's my dad had explained how he was wrongly convicted of a crime he didn't commit. I knew it was naive to believe him but Marco was a good man, he'd never put a foot out of line and despite being locked away, he still cared. When I visited on my 16th birthday it wasn't anything that I expected. I thought he would be this cold, hard figure of a man who didn't care, but the love he had was extraordinary. Despite where he had been living the past 10 years his smile and energy was a breath of fresh air, compared to what I was used to. Marco revealed to me on my 16th birthday that he had a trust fund set up for me, money to go to college with. I knew he wasn't guilty of the crimes he was accused of, which is why I'm standing here today at the top university in my state, studying law to become one of the best defence attorneys. To help the little guy and stop wrongful convictions.
Getting to my dorm, I'm grateful to see I have a single room. We were told when we were enrolling that the halls consisted of shared and single rooms. I was excited to have my own space, I planned on keeping my head down for the next 4 years, and it would mean Jacob and I had some privacy if he wasn't to get a single dorm. I place my bag and other belongings I could carry from my car on the bed. I pull my phone out from my back pocket and check my messages. I see I have a few from Jacob saying he has arrived on campus with his dad. A wave of relief hit me as I was quite nervous about seeing Mrs Barber again, after what went down at the start of summer I hadn't seen her, nor did I really want to. I wanted to apologise for the mess but Jacob insisted I didn't do anything wrong and wasn't the blame. He says her and his dad have been arguing for a little while now, they try to hide it from him but it's so obvious.

I giggle to myself as I put my phone back in my pocket. Making sure I have the keys to my dorm, I head back out to the parking lot to retrieve the rest of my stuff. As I walk past the other freshmen heading into their dorms I give a polite nod, saying hi to the ones who acknowledge me.
As I grab the last few remaining boxes from my car I can hear my name being called from the distance.
"Ainsley! Babe!" I smile to myself turning around to see Jacob and his dad walking over. Feeling the butterflies in the pit of my stomach, I feel my cheeks warm, excited for their arrival.
"Hi Jakey!" I beam hugging my boyfriend tight. Pulling back I look up to see Andy smiling at us both.
"Hi Andy!" I give a small gesture wave, he smiles stepping forward as he wraps his board arms around me, pulling me in for a hug. "Hey Ainsley, how've you been?" I feel the butterflies intensify at the contact between us, my cheeks growing increasingly warmer.
"I've been better, but I'm excited to be here." I beam as I step back, placing both hands in my back pockets.
"Ains, this place is awesome, have you seen some of the grounds?!" Jacob beams with excitement as he wraps his arm between mine, hugging my waist.
"Not yet, but I'm excited to have a real good look around."
"I'm sure you both will be settled in no time." Andy assures us both, looking so proud.
"Thanks dad... and thanks for everything this summer, I know with mom-"
"Don't worry about it son, okay? As long as you both are happy, that's all that matters to me." We both smile at him and his approval. It meant everything we at least had someone on our side when it came to college. My parents apart from my dad were no support and Laurie was more bothered she wouldn't be able to see her precious son every day.
"I need to go take the last of my stuff to my room then we can head out?" Jacob says, unwrapping his arm from around me.
"Yeah.. me too, I have these boxes-"
"I'll help with those Ainsley." Andy cuts me off, looking to us both for our approval.
"Dad, you legend! I'll go get the rest of my stuff and we can meet back here? Say goodbye to my dad?"
I feel the nerves bubbling inside of me but I agree by nodding, smiling at them both. Andy bends down and grabs one of the heavier boxes. "Lead the way." his smile so sincere, I quickly grab the smaller box and start leading us to my dorm. Getting to the door of my dorm I struggle twisting the key and handle to open up, once inside Andy follows quickly behind. I place my box on the desk chair, asking Andy to put his on my bed.
"Is here okay?" He asks, I turn around to see him watching me, I swear I could almost say I saw him staring at my ass.
"Perfect." I smile, walking over to him.
"Thanks for that, you really didn't have to."
"I know, I wanted to." He looks down to me, his gaze burning into mine, I'd never noticed before the ice cold blue that danced around his eyes. They were truly beautiful. It feels like time stops and the world stops spinning as we both keep our eyes locked, too scared to look away.
"You know Ainsley..." His voice is deep, I keep my eyes on him, moving to his lips then back to his eyes. "I'd be more that happy to help with any of your studies." I feel a spark shoot up my spine, I'm too scared to look but I feel his fingertips trace over mine. I look to his eyes again and I can see their focus elsewhere, following his gaze I can see him look at our hands. Our fingers dance around one another, threatening to intertwine. I break the silence first, my voice cracking slightly. "T-that would be great... Andy."
"I've missed you." He speaks so softly I almost miss what he says. Without even giving it a second though, I reply back instantly, unsure if I even said the words out loud. "I've missed you too."
My phone begins to buzz and my ringtone shocks us both back into reality. I pull my phone out and see it's Jacob.
"Hey, where are you guys?"
"Sorry Jake, I dropped some of my things along the way, your dad was helping me gather them up."
"No worries, see you in a few?"
"Yeah we're on our way."
I hang up and see Andy has distanced himself from me, lingering more towards the door. "That was Jake..."
"We better get back then." He smiles, opening the door and heading out of my dorm, I follow quickly behind and soon enough we're back in the parking lot, meeting Jacob.
"I best get back to your mother, now you both have my number. If anything happens and either of you need me, do not hesitate to call."
We both smile nodding in agreement. Andy hugs Jacob first, expressing how proud he is of his son. He then leans into me, giving me another hug, lingering for a few seconds longer. I feel his hot breath on my ear. "Text me later". I smile at him as he pulls away, giving a nod to show I heard what he said.
"Okay, now you guys stay out of trouble and I'll see you soon!"
"Thanks Dad! Text when you get home!"
"Will do son! Take care both."
"Bye dad!"
"Bye Andy!"
