This past year has gone by at great speed. And as soon as we were old enough, we enlisted in the military.

Throughout the year, I had the opportunity to communicate with Harry and Professor Snape through the Patronus spell. It was a comforting connection in this chaotic world, but despite our conversations, there seemed to be no way for me to return.

Harry, Hermione, and Ron expressed their worries about the dangerous world I found myself in and my determination to fight against the Titans. While I understood their concerns, my survival instinct pushed me to do whatever it takes to stay alive.

Today, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and I found ourselves at the southern training camp, ready to embark on the next phase of our journey. The training instructor, Keith Shadis, arrived in front of us to give us a speech that would set the tone for the challenges that lie ahead.

" We now begin the enlistment ceremony for the 104th Trainee Corps ! I am Keith Shadis, and I had the misfortune to be assigned to train you bastards ! And I'm not here to welcome you at all !". Shadis declared, his voice firm and unwelcoming.

The atmosphere grew tense as he continued, emphasizing the severity of the situation we faced," Right now, you're mere cattle, fit for nothing but Titan food ! No, less than cattle ! In three years, we'll take you worthless pieces of crap and train you ! Give you the means to fight the Titans !

In three years, when you stand before a Titan, will you still be food ? Or will you be a noble wall, shielding the King ? Or perhaps, one of humanity's glorious soldiers that slays Titans ? You will decide !". Shadis concluded, his voice echoing through the training grounds.

As the gravity of the situation sank in, I couldn't help but find amusement in the instructor's rough demeanor. This was meant to be a serious moment, yet all I wanted to do was laugh. Perhaps it was my way of coping with the tension, finding a sliver of lightheartedness amidst the darkness that surrounded us.

Shadis, despite his initial harshness, began to approach different cadets, starting with Armin. I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for my friend as I anticipated the rudeness he was about to endure.

" You there !". Shadis bellowed at Armin, singling him out from the group.

" Y-Yes, sir !". Armin responded promptly, snapping to attention and saluting.

Shadis's gaze scrutinized Armin, his words biting," Who are you ?!".

Armin stood his ground, trying to show no signs of fear," Armin Arlert, from Shiganshina, sir !".

" Yeah ? That's a stupid name. Your parents give you that ?". Shadis inquired, an edge of mockery in his voice.

" My grandfather did !". Armin replied, holding his head high, refusing to let the insult break his spirit.

" Arlert, what are you doing here ?!". Shadis asked him.

" Trying to aid in humanity's victory, sir !". Armin declared with conviction.

The instructor's tone softened for a brief moment, acknowledging Armin's noble intentions. But then, with a sudden command, Shadis spun Armin around, forcing him to face the opposite direction.

" That is indeed wonderful... Then you will feed the Titans ! Row 3, about face !".

Just as I thought he was about to pass me, he stopped for a moment and spoke to me. It's my lucky day...

" Who are you, weird eyes ?". Shadis demanded, his voice laced with curiosity.

" Estella Potter, from Shiganshina, sir !". I replied, offering a crisp salute.

Shadis' eyes widened, a glimmer of recognition flickering within them," You... You are...".

The sudden change in his demeanor caught the attention of everyone around us. They glanced at the instructor, their curiosity piqued by his surprised reaction. Do we know each other ? No, I would remember him... You can't forget a face like that... Or maybe he has changed a lot.

I fixed my gaze upon him, studying his features intently. And then, it hit me—I saw the familiar spark in his eyes. I see... He has decided to end up here.

He clenched his jaw, regaining composure, and barked," What are you doing here, Potter ?".

" To ensure that the sacrifice of soldiers who have given their hearts to humanity is not in vain and to give this world a bright future, sir !". I responded with unwavering determination.

Shadis scoffed, a mix of skepticism and disdain coloring his voice," Who do you think you are, Potter ? Do you really think that a scum like you can change things ? You live in a world of disillusionment !".

I held his gaze, my confidence unshaken," If I don't try, then we will never know ! I don't have to be someone great or special to change this world ! A 'scum' like me can make a difference, sir. It's the ones who think they have to be special to get ahead in life that are just delusional". I stated, a faint smirk playing on my lips.

A heavy silence descended upon the surroundings, the weight of my words lingering in the air. Most of the cadets looked at me with surprise, their gazes filled with a newfound respect. Shadis himself stood stupefied for a moment before collecting himself.

" I can't wait to see what you can do, Potter". Shadis said, a touch of admiration tingeing his voice, before turning to seek out his next target.

Oh, don't worry, Shadis. You won't be disappointed.

As he walked away, my mind buzzed with a mix of determination and excitement.

" Hey...". I heard someone whispering next to me, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I turned to see a tall brunette standing beside me. Her piercing eyes held a mix of curiosity and admiration.

" You have a lot of guts to have answered the instructor in this way". She remarked, her voice laced with intrigue.

I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride as I replied with a mischievous smile," I wasn't going to let him walk all over me. I have a pride to protect".

A smirk danced across her lips," I like you already. By the way, I'm Ymir".

I grinned," Estella, but I guess you must have heard it".

Ymir's smirk widened," And I intend to remember it".

Before our conversation could continue, our attention was abruptly diverted by the bellowing voice of Instructor Shadis as he shouted at someone else in the room. His harsh words echoed through the air, causing heads to turn and ears to perk up.

" Who are you ?!". Shadis's voice thundered, demanding an answer.

A timid voice responded," Thomas Wagner, from Trost".

" I can't hear you !". Shadis barked, clearly exasperated by the soft response.

Thomas tried to repeat himself, but Shadis quickly interrupted him, his impatience apparent," Too soft ! Go practice in the cattle shed ! You, next !".

" Mina Carolina, from Calaneth !".

Shadis's response was cutting," Wrong ! You are from the pig shed, worth less than cattle !".

A hint of fear flickered in Mina's eyes as she repeated," Yes, sir ! I am less than cattle !".

" You, next !". Shadis stated sternly.

A young man stepped forward, his voice steady," Yes, sir ! Samuel Linke-Jackson, from Snate Village !".

" A horrible name ! Change it now ! What are you doing here ?!". Shadis demanded, his words sharp and biting.

Suppressing a laugh, I couldn't help but think that Shadis should come with a warning label before speaking such blunt words.

" Ah, to help the humanity". Samuel replied.

As the repetitive introductions continued, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of boredom creeping in. It seemed like a never-ending cycle of uninspired reasons and terse responses. I sighed, my expression reflecting my weariness.

" Row 4, about face ! Listen up ! I've seen a lot of shit in my time, but you are the sorriest pieces of shit I've ever seen !". Shadis exclaimed, his voice echoing through the training ground.

Shadis glared at us, his piercing eyes scanning the row for any sign of weakness.

He walked in silence for a moment before striding quickly towards another recruit, his boots pounding against the ground.

" Who are you ?!". Shadis demanded, his voice sharp and commanding.

" Jean Kirstein, from Trost !". The young man replied, his voice steady despite the tension in the air.

" What are you doing here ?!". Shadis continued, his tone challenging.

" Joining the Military Police for a life deep within the walls". Jean answered, a proud smile spreading across his face.

Shadis probed him with his eyes, assessing the young man's determination," Oh, I see... You want access to the Interior ?".

" Yes !". Jean replied, his confidence unwavering.

What a twat... He didn't understand that it was a trick question, I thought, shaking my head in disbelief.

Without further ado, Shadis abruptly headbutted Jean, who stumbled backward, crouching down and holding his forehead in pain.

" Who said you could sit down ?! Anyone who can't handle this will never make it into the Military Police ! Who are you ?! What are you doing here ?!". Shadis barked at the boy next to Jean.

" Marco Bott, Jinae City, Wall Rose South District ! I want to join the Military Police to offer the King my body and self in service !". Marco replied with unwavering determination, his voice filled with sincerity.

Shadis sneered with irony, clearly unimpressed," Really... I'm glad to hear that. Good luck. However... The King doesn't want your body. Next, you ! Who are you ?!".

I hoped that this Marco would not be desperate. He seemed like a genuinely nice person, not one with a smug smile like the others. He seemed to have good intentions, and I silently wished him the best.

" Connie Springer, of Ragako Village, Wall Rose South District !". Connie blurted out, his voice tinged with panic and nervousness.

Shadis looked at him angrily and grabbed him by the head, his grip tight.

" You're doing it wrong, Connie Springer... I explained that this salute demonstrates your resolve to devote your entire heart to the people... Is your heart on your right side ?!". Shadis reprimanded, his voice filled with frustration.

We all turned around, startled by the sound of someone eating. I looked over my shoulder and saw a girl sitting there, munching on a potato. Why had she decided to eat it now, in the midst of this moment ?

There was something about her carefree demeanor that intrigued me, and I found myself grinning at the sight. Shadis dropped Connie, looking at the girl with surprise.

" Hey, you... What the fuck are you doing ?". Shadis asked in disbelief, his voice filled with a mix of surprise and annoyance.

The girl remained silent, seemingly unperturbed by his outburst. Instead, she glanced around with curious eyes, her attention fixed on her meal. I saw that Shadis was almost ready to explode. And in an instant, he found himself face to face with the girl who looked at him with frightened eyes.

" You're the one I'm talking to ! You ! Who are you ?". Shadis shouted, raising his voice even louder.

The girl stared back at him, her wide eyes reflecting a sense of innocence. She quickly swallowed the piece of food in her mouth before answering, her voice filled with a tinge of formality.

" Sasha Braus, from Dauper Village, located south of Wall Rose !". Sasha introduced herself, saluting.

" What are you holding in your right hand ?". Shadis questioned sternly.

" It's a steamed potato, sir ! I found it lying in the kitchen !". Sasha explained, her words carrying a sense of simplicity and genuineness.

" Did you steal that ? Why ? Why are you eating a potato right now ?". Shadis probed, genuinely perplexed by the girl's behavior.

" Letting it get cold would've been a waste, so I decided I should eat it now". Sasha replied matter-of-factly, as if it were the most logical thing in the world.

" Well, I still don't understand... Why would you eat that potato ?". Shadis questioned, his curiosity getting the better of him.

Sasha looked at him with a mixture of surprise and disbelief, momentarily caught off guard by his inquiry.

" Are you asking me why people eat potatoes ?". Sasha asked, her voice tinged with a hint of disbelief at the question.

A moment of silence enveloped the air, the weight of Sasha's question hanging in the space between them. Even the slightest sound seemed amplified, as if time itself had paused to witness their interaction. Sasha broke the silence by slicing the potato in half.

" Take the half of it if you'd like, sir". Sasha offered, extending her hand to Shadis, presenting the fragmented potato.

Shadis looked at Sasha, perplexed by her gesture. He tentatively accepted the proffered piece, still trying to make sense of the situation.

" Half ?". Shadis echoed, his confusion evident as he held the irregularly divided potato in his hand.

The ceremony concluded swiftly, well after Shadis scolded Sasha the hell out.

Then, with some other cadets, we were watching her running. It pained me to see her pushing herself so hard, her body straining with each step. But at the same time, I couldn't help but wonder what possessed her to want to eat right away, as if her life depended on it.

" He's still making that potato girl run". Connie stated.

" Potato girl, that's a cute nickname". I said with a smile, trying to lighten the mood.

Connie's face turned red with embarrassment, realizing that his comment might have been insensitive.

I glanced at Eren, who seemed annoyed by Connie's remark. His gaze shifted back to poor Sasha, his eyes filled with a mixture of frustration and empathy.

Eren scoffed," Wow, five straight hours ? But she seemed more distraught when told she wouldn't get dinner than when told she must run until she dropped...'". Eren commented, his voice laced with a hint of disbelief.

" Well, it's obvious that she considers food to be crucial. Can't say I blame her. Food is life". I replied, trying to understand Sasha's perspective.

After all, we were all driven by different motivations in this harsh world.

" If I remember correctly, Dauper Village is a tiny hunting village deep in the mountains". Connie informed us.

" What's that ?". Eren asked, genuinely curious about the village.

We all turned around to see a wagon carrying some people passing by. Their worn-out faces and weary expressions spoke volumes about the hardships they had endured.

" The dropouts. They requested a transfer to the frontier". Mina replied, her voice tinged with sympathy.

" What ? But it's only the first day !". Armin exclaimed, his disbelief evident in his voice.

" It was only a matter of time... If you aren't strong enough, you have to leave. Hard to believe they'd rather go back to weeding and picking up rocks". Eren remarked bitterly, a mix of frustration and determination in his eyes.

For me, it was also a display of courage when someone knew their limits and made a difficult decision. I silently hoped that those who left would find happiness in whatever path they chose.

" Hey, he didn't ask where you were from, did he ?". Marco asked Eren, trying to divert the conversation.

" Shiganshina, the same as them". Eren replied, his voice filled with a sense of camaraderie.

He reached out, taking my hand, and placed his other hand on Armin's shoulder.

" I see... That's...". Marco trailed off, struggling to find the right words.

" Then, weren't you there that day ?". Connie asked without hesitation, his curiosity getting the better of him.

" Hey !". Marco exclaimed, his eyes widening as he realized the weight of his friend's question.

I could see that Marco possessed a rare quality : restraint and tact, knowing when to tread lightly on delicate matters.

" Did you see the Colossal Titan ?". Connie persisted, his eyes searching for answers.

Eren nodded, his gaze turning distant as he recalled the haunting memories of that fateful day.

I gently squeezed Armin's hand, silently signaling that it was time to leave. I had no desire to answer their prying questions, reliving the horrors that we had endured.

" Let's go eat, Arty". I whispered, my voice filled with a mix of weariness and longing for normalcy.

" R-right". Armin muttered, his voice barely audible.

Armin and I helped ourselves to some food and found a place to sit next to Mikasa, who was already waiting for us. Eren eventually walked inside, followed by the other cadets, eager to get answers about what had happened that day.

" Sorry, Em. You didn't wait too long ?". I asked, starting to eat some bread.

Mikasa shook her head, her raven-black hair swaying gently.

" No, don't worry. What are they doing ?". She inquired, her piercing gray eyes fixed on the group gathered around Eren.

" They're asking him questions about what happened that day". Armin replied, his voice filled with a mix of curiosity and concern.

Mikasa frowned, her lips forming a thin line, and she nodded in understanding. We decided to eat our meals in silence, allowing Eren to focus on answering the barrage of inquiries from the others.

My attention was quickly drawn back to Eren, who stood at the center of the room, his face a mix of weariness and determination. He was recounting the terrifying events he had witnessed, his voice carrying an air of undeniable truth.

" I already told you, I saw it". Eren sighed, his words laced with frustration.

" Really ?". Samuel, a young recruit with unkempt hair, asked, his eyes wide with disbelief.

" How big was it ?". Thomas inquired, his voice filled with a mix of fear and fascination.

" Big enough to look over the walls". Eren responded nonchalantly, as if describing an everyday occurrence.

" What ?!". The recruit with the horrible name, according to Shadis, exclaimed in shock." I heard it stepped right over them !".

" Me too !". A girl chimed in, her voice trembling with fear.

" That's what they said in my village !". Connie interjected.

" No, it wasn't that tall". Eren corrected them, his tone slightly annoyed, as if tired of their exaggerated accounts.

" What did it look like ?". Mina wondered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Eren took a moment to compose himself before answering," It barely had any skin, but it had a huge mouth".

" What about the Armored Titan that broke Wall Maria ?". Connie inquired, his eyes darting from Eren to the others.

Eren shrugged, dismissing the name," They call it that, but it looked like a normal Titan to me".

I couldn't help but interject mentally, knowing that Eren was downplaying the horrors they had faced. Not really... They did have some special features that normal Titans don't have, I thought, frustration welling up within me.

" Then what's a normal Titan like ?". Thomas asked innocently, his voice tinged with curiosity.

Eren's face contorted in agony, his eyes darting away for a moment, as if trying to escape the haunting memories. His body stiffened, and he looked like he was about to throw up.

What an idiot... That's not the kind of question you ask, I thought, frustration turning into anger.

" Guys, let's stop with the questions. I'm sure he'd prefer to forget some things". Marco stated, trying to diffuse the tension in the room.

" Sorry for asking". Connie said, feeling guilty for unintentionally stirring things up.

But Eren interrupted Connie's apology, his voice filled with determination," Don't be ! The Titans aren't all that tough... If we can master the 3DM Gear, they won't stand a chance ! Finally, I'm able to train as a soldier...

I was just so excited, I forgot myself for a second ! I'm joining the Survey Corps, so I can wipe the Titans off the face of this earth ! I'll kill them all...".

" Hey, are you nuts ? Did you just say you want to join the Survey Corps ?". Jean exclaimed, interrupting Eren's declaration.

Eren's eyes blazed with anger as he retorted," Yeah, I did. And you said you wanted to join the Military Police to take it easy, right ?".

" I'm no liar... I'm a straight talker, unlike someone who pretends to have balls of steel, even when he's about to piss himself". Jean defended himself, raising his hands in a defensive gesture.

The tension in the room escalated, and Eren slammed his spoon on the table, rising to his feet, his fists clenched. I knew this confrontation was inevitable.

" Are you talking about me ?". Eren asked, his voice laced with anger.

" D-don't...". Marco nervously muttered, sensing the imminent clash.

" Hey, I didn't... Well, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that you're doing the wrong thing. Peace ?". Jean offered, extending his hand in a conciliatory gesture.

Eren glared at Jean for a moment, contemplating his words, before finally nodding," Yeah, I'm sorry too".

Eren whacked Jean's hand away and stormed out of the room, his frustration evident in his every step. I knew I couldn't let him go alone.

" Come on, Mikasa. We have an impulsive boy to watch". I said, turning to Mikasa, who stood up silently, her gaze unwavering.

I glanced at Armin, who had remained immobile during the confrontation," Are you coming with us ?".

" Uh, yeah, I'm following you". Armin replied, his voice slightly wavering.

I nodded, offering him an encouraging smile before leading the way out of the room.

" Hey, you...".

Armin, Mikasa, and I stopped in our tracks, curiosity evident on our faces as we turned to face Jean. His words had caught us off guard, and we were eager to hear more.

" W-w-well, uh... It's just that you look different from the rest of us. I'm s-sorry... Your black hair is very pretty... But you, your auburn hair is beautiful, and especially your eyes... It's hypnotizing". Jean stammered, his voice laced with a hint of awe.

Mikasa's usually stoic expression shifted to a glare as she responded," Thank you". Her tone carried a mixture of gratitude and annoyance.

Caught up in the awkwardness of the situation, I couldn't help but let out a chuckle, my face flushing with embarrassment," Yes, thank you. That's very kind of you, Jean".

Mikasa huffed, clearly not pleased. Armin, ever the peacemaker, gently took my hand in his, while Mikasa did the same on my other side. Together, we resumed our walk, but something felt off.

" Don't pull me like this ! What's the problem ?". I finally voiced my confusion, feeling a mix of concern and frustration.

Armin gave me a reassuring smile, his grip on my hand tightening slightly.

" Nothing, Stella". He said softly.

" I just... didn't like the way he looked at you". Mikasa grumbled, her protective nature shining through.

I glanced at both of them, searching for answers in their faces. What way ? Jean was just being nice to Mikasa and me, after all. I shrugged, unable to comprehend their sudden unease, and continued walking alongside my friends.

Mikasa, Armin, and I joined Eren, who was walking slowly, his mood visibly sour.

He seemed annoyed as he muttered," I'm fine, leave me alone".

I couldn't resist teasing him a little.

" What if it was a nope ?". I asked, playfully punching his arm.

Surprisingly, it managed to bring a smile to his face.

" You're always so impulsive when you're riled up". Mikasa calmly remarked, her words carrying a tone of familiarity.

Armin chimed in, agreeing with Mikasa," She's right, Eren".

" This again ?". Eren grumbled, seemingly dismissive of our concern. However, his attention quickly shifted to Mikasa's appearance." Anyway, isn't your hair a little long ? It could cause an accident when you're practicing with the Maneuver Gear. Especially yours, Stella. Soon you will be able to walk on them".

Eren had a point. My hair had been growing longer, and a new haircut was long overdue.

" Very well. I'll cut it. But how short should it be ?". Mikasa asked.

" There is not much to cut. Maybe two or three centimeters should be enough". I replied, giving her a rough estimate.

Mikasa nodded in understanding, acknowledging my words. After wishing Eren and Armin goodnight, we made our way back to the bunkhouse, eager to carry out our impromptu hairdressing session.

" All right, you want me to try and cut your hair ?". I offered.

" I would like that, please". Mikasa replied, her voice filled with trust and warmth.

Grinning mischievously, I warned her," With pleasure ! But I warn you, I don't know if I'm very good at this".

" Don't worry about it, it will grow back". Mikasa reassured me with a gentle smile.

Taking one last admiring look at her beautiful hair, I began cutting. Concentrating intently, I made sure to cut each strand with precision. Occasionally, I frowned and adjusted my technique to ensure a clean and even cut. After a few touch-ups, I nodded my head, satisfied with my work.

" And it's done !". I exclaimed, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Mikasa's hand reached up to touch her freshly cut hair as she accepted the small mirror I handed her. She inspected it carefully, her expression thoughtful.

" So... Do you like it ?". I asked, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

Mikasa paused for a moment, as if contemplating her answer.

Then, with a radiant smile, she replied," Yes. Thank you, Stella. You're very talented".

Hearing her words, my heart swelled with pride and joy. Mikasa's approval meant the world to me. I couldn't help but return her smile, grateful for the opportunity to have done something special for her.

" I'm glad that you like it. I'm going to go and have a shower". I informed her, intending to give her some space to admire her new hairstyle.

Mikasa nodded, her eyes still fixed on her reflection in the mirror. As I left the room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of fulfillment and contentment.

I took a quick shower, letting the warm water cascade over me, washing away the weariness of the day. After drying off, I slipped into a comfortable outfit and stood before the mirror, holding a pair of scissors in my hand. It seemed like a simple task, but cutting my own hair felt daunting. I gazed at my reflection, unsure of where to start.

As I pondered my dilemma, the sound of the door opening behind me caught my attention. I turned around and found myself face to face with a girl who had  blonde hair and captivating icy blue eyes.

" Sorry, I thought there was no one there". The girl said.

" Oh no, there's no harm done. I'm just trying to figure out how to cut my hair". I replied, relieved that my self-consciousness was interrupted.

The girl seemed to hesitate for a moment, then closed the door behind her.

" Need help ?". She offered, surprising me with her willingness to assist.

I looked at her, taken aback by her unexpected kindness, before finally nodding. Her appearance had initially made me believe she would be annoyed or uninterested in my predicament.

" How much do I cut off ?". The girl asked.

" Just a little below the shoulders so I can still tie them up". I instructed, grateful for her assistance.

She nodded, her hands steady as she began to trim my hair with expertise.

" By the way, I'm Estella Potter. Thank you for helping me". I introduced myself, wanting to express my gratitude.

" Annie Leonhart. I remember you. You made quite an impression at the ceremony earlier". She replied, her words tinged with a hint of curiosity.

" Really ? Well, at least most remember that and not the weird eyes part". I chuckled, appreciating her lightheartedness.

" I don't see what's strange about them. They almost look like gems". Annie remarked, shrugging off any peculiarity.

My eyes widened in surprise, touched by her compliment.

I chuckled, grateful for her kind words," Thanks, Annie...".

A moment of comfortable silence enveloped us before Annie broke it with a soft voice," I have finished". She announced, handing me back the pair of scissors.

I turned to look at my reflection and couldn't help but smile," I love it, thank you, Annie !".

Annie fidgeted slightly, her cheeks tinted with a hint of pink.

" Y-yeah. I'm going to take my shower now, so if you could leave". She stammered, seeming a bit flustered.

I nodded, understanding her need for privacy, and walked out of the bathroom to find Mikasa gathering her belongings. Her eyes widened as they landed on my new haircut.

" It doesn't suit me, is that it ?". I nervously asked, a hint of insecurity creeping into my voice.

" No ! I mean, yes, it suits you perfectly. I really like it". Mikasa reassured me, her words sincere and comforting.

A wide smile spread across my face," Thanks. Annie helped me cut them".

" Annie ? Who's that ?". Mikasa inquired, curiosity evident in her tone.

" A girl with blonde hair, about your height, and she has icy blue eyes". I described Annie, hoping to jog Mikasa's memory.

" I see... I didn't saw her earlier". Mikasa replied, her voice trailing off as she settled into her bed.

I hummed slightly, pondering Mikasa's response, before following suit and climbing into my own bed. The weariness of the day took hold of me, and soon sleep embraced me, pulling me into its comforting embrace.
