Chloe steps out a coffee shop in Metropolis and is trying to get ahold of Clark, but he's not answering, and she leaves a message saying, "Clark, this is Chloe with message number one-too-many. Look, I know trying to lead a contingent of Kryptonians looking for a new lease on life is putting a lot of weight on your shoulders and I don't want to add to that but I'm still trying to set up an official meeting with our super gang. Clark, we're playing too fast and loose. We need to start taking this more seriously." Chloe then hears static on her phone and then the whole streetlights turn off. Chloe turns around and then looks up to see a figure on the fire escape. The figure beams a bright yellow light and Chloe runs away. As Chloe runs away, she runs through an alley, but the figure blocks her path and she says, "Who are you?" The man says, "My name is Sylvester Pemberton. You and I share something in common. We're both trying to put a team together." Chloe says, "I don't know what you're talking about." Sylvester says, "You're the one they call Watchtower." Chloe says, "Watchtower?" Sylvester says, "Technology today makes hiding a whole lot harder, Miss Sullivan. When someone like you reaches out and plugs into so many outlets someone else is bound to pull out one of those cords and follow it back to its source. You're lucky a friend did it first." Chloe says, "Friends? Friends don't sneak up on each other in a dark alley." Then it starts to get windy and cold, and Chloe says, "Is it just me or did it get really cold really fast?" Then Sylvester puts Chloe into a trash bin, and she says, "Hey!" Sylvester looks down and says, "Stay down. Miss Sullivan." Then he closes the bin. Chloe shields her eyes when she sees a flash of light and then sees a bunch of holes coming through the bin and then sees an icicle. Chloe tries to see what's going on, but everything's blurry and she ducks and covers her head. Then the noise stops, and she lifts the bin, that's frozen up and gets out. Chloe walks over to Sylvester to see him bleeding and she yells, "Help! Somebody, help!" Chloe lifts Sylvester's head and he weakly says, "They came after us. They'll come after all of you. Che... Check." Chloe says, "What? Check what? Check what?" Then Sylvester dies and Chloe says, "Who are you? Who's coming?" Later, Chloe's at the hospital getting checked out and she sees Clark. Clark walks over and he says, "Chloe, are you okay?" Chloe says, "Yeah. Just some moderate frostbite and a little sleep deprivation. Nothing a cup of hot cocoa and a nap won't fix. But the real questions is, are you okay? I haven't heard from you in days." Clark says, "Yeah, we've been playing phone tag." Chloe says, "Uh, no, phone tag implies two people. I've been playing phone solitaire. Not nearly as much fun." As Chloe checks herself out of the hospital, Clark says, "I'm sorry. I've been meaning to call." Chloe says, "Clark, it's okay. No apology is needed. Protecting the streets of Metropolis is more than enough to juggle. Add to that you're now leading the secret city of Kandor." Clark says, "I'm only helping them find their place here. They're trying to make earth their home. Like John Jones did when he got a job in the police department and became a detective." Chloe says, "So, what, you're expecting the Kandorians to just become firemen and short-order cooks?" Clark says, "They need to make their own lives and then move on from there." Chloe hears a voice say, "Officer?" Chloe looks at Sylvester's belongings and the officer says, "Yes." The female nurse says, "Uh, these are the recovered personals." Clark says, "Who was he?" Chloe says, "His name was Sylvester Pemberton but other than that, I haven't got a clue. But I'm gonna get one." Chloe walks up to the officer, and she says, "Hi, again. I just wanted to make sure you have all my contact info in case you need anything else." The officer says, "I think we're all set, Miss Sullivan. Thank you." While Chloe was distracting the officer, she downloaded everything off Sylvester's phone onto hers. Chloe walks back over to Clark to hear a woman say, "Just stay the hell away from me!" Chloe says, "What was that drama about?" Clark says, "She obviously has a problem with reporters. She's friends with Sylvester Pemberton." Chloe says, "Pemberton knew about Watchtower. He wore some kind of weird uniform. He had a weapon that could control light. He was killed by ice. From someone or something. I'm getting some serious Wall of Weird flashbacks here, Clark. I know that you have a lot of things pressing right now but this is a job for Clark Kent. His final phone call lasted 30 minutes. It was with a guy named Wesley Dodds. You need to go check it out."
Later, Oliver and Liana walk into Watchtower and Chloe says, "Oliver, Liana. You got my message." Liana says, "Of course. It sounded pretty urgent." Oliver says, "I got all ten of them, Chloe. Where are the other super friends?" Chloe says, "Still waiting for them to ping me back. See, this why I keep asking everybody to come up with some sort of standardized trouble alert. The teams need structure." Oliver says, "Is that what we're lacking? You're really on a kick lately, Chloe. Personal phone conversations... Bank records... Amazon wish list. " Chloe says, "Big sister's watching." Oliver looks at the screen closely and says, "Is that my e-mail? Chloe, I'll have you know that those messages between me and Canary were purely platonic." Chloe says, "Can we skip your virtual love life and actually focus on the job here?" Oliver says, "Gladly." Chloe says, "Great. Our victim's name is Sylvester Pemberton, and he had a long criminal record. Fraud, embezzlement, and assault. He didn't have any family, but he did have a friend show up at the hospital." Chloe shows Oliver and Liana the security feed and Chloe pulls up the young blonde's identity. Chloe says, "Courtney Whitmore. She's a sophomore at Blue Valley High and, uh, she gets a big old D-plus for her attendance. She hasn't been to school in the last three weeks." Oliver says, "You don' think blondie's our killer, do you?" Chloe says, "No, but I do think she knows something. I want to take a closer look at this glowing staff the police have in evidence. We need to get it." Oliver nods and says, "'We' meaning me, right?" Chloe smiles. Later, Chloe and Liana go to the hospital and go into the morgue to speak with Emil about Wesley Dodds. Emil lifts the sheet over the body and says, "No bullets. Just residual ice again." Chloe says, "So, minus the patriotic hoodie plus one gas mask and Dodds was killed the same way as Pemberton? With what? Some kind of ice weapon?" Emil says, "Evidence would suggest that weapon is more of a who than a what. The ice samples we pulled from the first victim's wounds had human DNA." Liana says, "So, the killer was some kind of meta-human with an icy touch. Kind of like me." Chloe says, "Well, that explains my arctic ride in the dumpster of doom." Emil says, "Well, he certainly has interesting taste in victims. But Clark said that the assailant left the letters J-S-A. You have any idea, what that means?" Chloe says, "Maybe it's a calling card. Our cold-blooded cryo-killer definitely seems to have a score to settle." Emil says, "Well, what was Clark able to dig up?" Chloe says, "Nothing yet. When he checked in, he was still knee-deep in excavation at the "Daily Planet" archives." As Chloe and Liana leave the room, Emil says, "Right. Uh, let run a few more tests on this." Chloe says, "And we'll see if we can help Clark unearth some answers about the elusive J-S-A." Chloe and Liana walk out the room. Later, Chloe and Liana are in the archives with Clark at the Daily Planet, and he grabs a box and says, "I didn't think we'd have to dig this deep?" Chloe says, "Well, I couldn't find anything online beyond Sylvester Pemberton's rap sheet." Clark looks through a file and says, "Maybe they didn't want anyone else finding it." Liana says, "'They'? They who?" Clark says, "Sylvester Pemberton worked with 12 other known criminals including Wesley Dodds." Chloe says, "He mentioned bringing a team back together." Clark says, "Back together? That means, at some point, they broke apart." Chloe finds an old movie film and she puts it an old projector. Clark says, "They were systematically caught and taken down." Liana says, "For what?" Clark says, "The crimes don't match who they are." Chloe says, "They were called "con-men" for a reason, Clark." As their watching the film, Chloe says, "That's Sylvester Pemberton." Clark looks down at the file and says, "He was accused of embezzling from his own company." Another familiar face pops up on the screen and Clark says, "That's Wesley Dodds, international business. He had no prior criminal record... until he was arrested at a student demonstration that turned violent, a young woman was killed." They watch the cops unmask a man and Liana says, "Who's that?" Clark says, "Al Pratt. Physics professor at Calvin College. Arrested for assaulting police officers when they went after Dodds." The video shows the police arresting a man in a gym and Liana says, "Wait a minute. I know that guy. That's Ted Grant. He's a heavyweight champion, but... how is he involved with these guys?" They then see another man get arrested and Clark says, "Jay Garrick, a research scientist. He's charged with fraud and resisting arrest." They see another man get put behind bars and Liana says, "Alan, Scott, the CEO of a broadcasting company?" Clark says, "Arrested for aiding and abetting. Guys, they have no connections besides their arrests. They don't even sound like criminals." They watch the police take an old woman from her kitchen and Chloe says, "And I got to say that Abigail Hunkel doesn't exactly strike fear in this hero's heart." Clark says, "Talking about these arrest reports. Each one of them tried to take the fall for the other. And they tried to protect one another." Chloe says, "I guess during the golden age of robbery and racketeering there was honor among thieves." Clark says, "This goes beyond honor. There were missing witnesses, circumstantial evidence accusations of jury tampering. They stood by one another, and in the end none of the convictions held up." Chloe says, "Almost sounds like you admire them." Clark says, "I admire their loyalty." Chloe says, "Well, me and Liana will stay here and finish downloading the 411 on the mystery men the old-fashioned way. You need to go and warn Carter Hall. He's the next name on Pemberton's call list. He called him over a dozen times in the last two days." They then see Carter Hall fight his way through the police and Liana says, "What kind of team was this?" Later, Oliver's on the phone with Chloe and he says, "Chloe, I got a peek inside lockup. Pemberton's glow stick is MIA." Chloe says, "Oliver, we have to track it down." Oliver says, "Call you back." Later, Chloe and Liana meet Oliver on the street, and he says, "If someone's killing criminals from the past why kidnap Courtney?" Chloe says, "Maybe she knew what Sylvester Pemberton had hidden up his star-covered sleeve. His car received a handful of parking tickets so it should be easy to spot." Oliver says, "You could say that." They look to see an old fashion car and Oliver says, "Alright. Just give me a sec to get this door open." Liana opens the door and says, "Or you could just try the handle." Liana gets inside the car to see it a mess and she continues to say, "Clark's at the "Daily Planet" trying to track down Pemberton's home address right now, but it looks like he may have been living here." Oliver says, "Well, if he knew someone was after him maybe he was the one on the run." Chloe says, "Well, his choice of transport doesn't exactly blend in." Oliver looks in the glove compartment and closes it reads off, "'The Star Rocket Racer.' What do you suppose this was, their getaway car?" Oliver opens a journal to find Clark, Chloe, Liana, him, and his team. Oliver says, "He knew about us. He knew our identities." Chloe says, "That means Courtney probably does, too." Later, Chloe's in her car with Liana and Clark gets in and he says, "Oliver's searching all over the city for any sign of Courtney. How did they know our identities?" Chloe says, "I think they've been tracking us a long time, Clark. Let's just hope the prime murder suspect hasn't." Clark says, "Did you find one?" Chloe says, "Temperature dropped 40 degrees right before Pemberton was attacked." Clark says, "You said that the skin around Pemberton's wounds was covered with ice, just like Wesley Dodds'." Chloe hands Clark a file and says, "This is what led me to Joar MahKent. Back in Pemberton's day, he was a cryo-kinetic hit man that was called The Icicle." Clark says, "Where's The Icicle now?" Liana says, "He's still recovering from some serious injuries he sustained several years ago. He's in the psych ward at Metropolis General." Clark says, "Or at least he's supposed to be." Later, they go to the hospital and check to if Icicle is there. Clark says, "Can't help but wonder what happened to these people, they were so close." Chloe says, "They were criminals, and they were caught. That's what happened." Clark says, "Carter Hall's definitely hiding something else in that museum." Chloe says, "Reporter's intuition?" Clark says, "Clark Kent's." Chloe grabs a file and Clark says, "What is it, Chloe?" Chloe says, "Dead end. The Icicle's been in a vegetative state for the last decade." Liana says, "If that's true, there's no way that he can be our killer." Then there's a glowing light underneath the door and they open it to see someone with a gold helmet standing over Icicle. Clark grabs the man and says, "What are you doing to him?" The man says, "Your fate is utterly binding. You are of value, Clark Kent." The man looks at Chloe and he says, "But you... you walk the same path I do, Chloe Sullivan. And Liana Lane, your fate is that you will be the one he will need." Liana says, "What?" The man says, "The savior. The one who will heal us all. The sentient power. You will also bring great power to help the world." Liana's still confused and Clark says, "Who are you?" The man says, "Let me show you, my friend." Then the man and Clark disappear, and Chloe says, "Clark?" Later, Chloe and Liana arrive at Watchtower and Liana calls Oliver and puts him speaker and worriedly says, "Oliver?" Oliver says, "What's wrong?" Liana says, "Clark's gone." Oliver says, "What do you mean, he's gone?" Chloe says, "Like one of Pemberton's old gang somehow teleported him away. He said he had to show him something. Called him his friend." Oliver says, "Where would they take him?" Chloe says, "I think the same place they took Courtney." Oliver says, "Another twist to the mystery, guys. Satellites caught the glow of the staff over the Metropolis sky ten minutes ago. I followed it. Wherever Goldilocks went she got a change of clothes. It's getting stranger." Liana says, "Stranger how?" Oliver says, "Well... it's in the middle of the night in Suicide Slum she's standing under a streetlight. She's all dolled up with no place to go. Looks like she's making herself... a target." Then the girls hear something near Watchtower and crashes through, Chloe and Liana duck down and looks up to see it was Oliver and Liana says, "Oliver! Are you okay?" Liana goes to Oliver and then a voice says, "He'll live. Now, stay the hell out of our business. Next time, I won't ask so nicely." The birdman flies away. Chloe then helps clean up Oliver's wounds and he says, "Ten to one says pigeon man's got Clark locked up in a birdcage somewhere. I don't know who the hell these people are, but they sure don't like us. Ow." Chloe says, "I thought that didn't hurt." Oliver says, "I lied." Liana says, "You know, you're lucky he didn't drop you from ten stories up." Oliver says, "I don't feel lucky. As much as I hate to admit it, these people they really know what they're doing. Ow!" Chloe says, "Don't you think it's sad that a secret society of retired supervillains can actually come out of the mothballs and tear us apart like this?" Oliver says, "They know everything about us, guys." Chloe says, "Yeah, and we don't know anything about them. You know, maybe it's time I gave up on bringing the band back together. Maybe this has all been a lost cause." Oliver says, "Whoa! Don't give up on us yet. We may be a bit dysfunctional hard to wrangle at times, but when the chips are down, we're always there, guys." Chloe says, "They took Clark out from under our noses." Oliver says, "And I took this off the winged wonder when he yanked me into the sky." Oliver is holding a throwing star and Liana grabs it and says, "Looks like an antique... from a museum." Oliver says, "I say we get some reinforcements... get Clark to throw them through some windows."
The next day, Liana and John Jones walk into the museum where the JSA are, and they see Oliver with an arrow to the birdman's neck. John says, "I hope it's not too late to say, 'We come in peace'." A few moments later, the JSA are on one side of the table and Clark's team is on the other side. Carter says, "This is our responsibility. The people being murdered were our teammates, our friends. Once we find the Icicle, we'll fade back away." Clark says, "We're not asking you to." Carter says, "All we want is justice." Oliver says, "Justice? Well, everything we've heard about you guys is a little blurry when it comes to justice." Courtney says, "You mean what you've read." Oliver says, "Do you even know who you're working with here? These old men have criminal records longer than that staff of yours." Courtney says, "They made those up!" Carter says, "It's none of their business." John says, "With all due respect we're making it our business. Even when I had the power to leave earth I chose not to, for one reason... hope. Hope for the future. Humanity's capacity for violence is great... but their capacity for hope... is greater than any I've ever encountered." Liana speaks up for the first time and says, "There's a murder on the loose. As long as you know something about it, we're not going anywhere." Carter says, "The Justice Society of America was cleaning up the streets before you we're in diapers. We tried our best to stay out of the public eye, but... a government task force got wind of our... extracurricular activities. They wanted us to work for them. They wanted us to unmask." John says, "And you said no." Carter says, "We refused to play ball... so they went after us hard. One by one, they uncovered our identities. They had us arrested... and institutionalized. They forced us out of the skies and off the streets." Dr. Fate says, "We were ripped... away from our families... while trying to protect them." Oliver says, "Then why didn't you fight back?" Dr. Fate says, "We did." Carter says, "For as long as we could. As I could. I wasn't the leader they thought I was. I made too many mistakes." Clark says, "I've made mistakes, but I haven't quit." Carter says, "Haven't quit? You haven't started. Not as a team, anyway." Clark says, "You're making this too personal." Carter says, "That is our strength... not our weakness." Courtney says, "Carter, please. There's over a dozen members of the Justice Society still out there. Jay, Ted, Alan. If we don't team up and stop the Icicle he'll go after them next." Clark says, "It's obvious you still care about this team. If you didn't... you wouldn't have kept watch over all of this." Carter says, "This... is a temporary alliance." Liana says, "Do you have any idea where we can find Icicle?" Chloe appears and says, "I've got one or two. Unless this is costumes only." Carter says, "Who's this? Your secretary?" Liana says, "Our eyes and ears." Chloe says, "There's a couple possibilities where Icicle might show next. Security cameras caught him at the hospital visiting his father last night, target one. And if he's anything like his father he's gonna need to replenish his abilities with some liquid nitrogen... target two." John says, "Do you know where the nearest nitrogen depot is?" Chloe says, "No, but I can find it, John. I just need to look at their computer. Got one?" Courtney takes Chloe to their computer and lifts the sheet off and Chloe sees it's an old fashion computer. Later, Liana and Chloe take Courtney to Watchtower and Courtney's in awe and says, "Wow. So, this is where you guys operate?" Chloe says, "More or less. Mostly less." Courtney says, "And I guess it's everything you could ever ask for to fight the good fight, right?" Liana and Chloe look at each other with a smile and nod. Courtney continues to say, "It's missing something. Where are the pictures? Or... you know, a place to sit down and eat? Sylvester always told me that the JSA's brownstone was considered a second home for everyone. I mean, they'd even spend Thanksgiving there with their spouses and kids." Liana softly says, "It was like a family." Courtney smiles and says, "Yeah. I mean, it was a family." Liana says, "How did you get involved with the Justice Society?" Liana sits on the couch and Courtney sits next to her and says, "Well... my, um, stepfather, Pat... was Sylvester Pemberton's sidekick years ago. The Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy." Chloe smiles and says, "Stripesy?" Courtney laughs and says, "It was like the worst code name ever. I found Sylvester's old equipment, and... Well, at first, I put it on, you know, just to annoy Pat. But... I don't know. The first time I ever saved someone..." Liana says, "You were hooked." Courtney nods with a smile and says, "Yeah. Line and sinker." Liana smiles and says, "Yeah, I know the feeling." Courtney smiles and Chloe says, "So, you're not actually related to any of them?" Courtney says, "Well, family is not just about blood. And... watching people... doesn't make them a part of your life. I don't know. I mean... Maybe your team would operate better if you didn't get together only when there was trouble. And... if you made it a little more "Home, sweet home" and, a little less nuclear war room." A voice from the computer says, "Incoming communication. Green Arrow." They walk over to the computer and Chloe pulls up Oliver onto the screen and she says, "Hey, Oliver, what do you got?" Oliver says, "I'm here with my wingman. Did you put the call into the Snow Miser?" Chloe says, "I rerouted the call through the hospital and left a message that said that his father's taken a turn for the worst. If Icicle has been checking in as often as he has been we should be able to catch him at Met Gen." Oliver says, "Thanks." Then the call ends. Later, Liana and Courtney meet up with Clark at the hospital to speak with Emil about John. Clark comes out of the elevator, and she says, "Clark." Clark says, "Courtney, I'm sorry about Doctor Fate." Courtney says, "I know. When Hawkman heard, he flew off. Green Arrow went after him." Clark says, "And John?" Liana says, "Doctor Emil had him transferred to a secured room." They walk up to Emil and Liana says, "Dr. Emil, what do you think?" Emil says, "John seems to be undergoing some kind of incubation... but the end result, we can't begin to guess." The machine then starts beeping and Emil says, "Excuse me." Emil leaves and goes into the room where John is. Courtney says, "Part of me wishes Hawkman would find Icicle first. He'd do what I wouldn't. I know it's wrong." Clark says, "It is wrong, Courtney." Courtney says, "Sylvester said that. The JSA has always done the right thing. And... in the end when everything got turned upside down... Hawkman began crossing the line so many times that the line disappeared altogether." Liana says, "Then it's up to you to make it right. You're the next generation." Courtney softly smiles and says, "Sylvester said that, too. You two remind me of him." Clark says, "When this is over... don't let the torch that he kept burning... The one that he literally passed on to you, go out. Keep his legacy alive, and you keep him alive." Courtney smiles and nods.
Later, Liana suits up for her first battle with the team and she walks into Watchtower with Courtney and Clark who are also both suited up. They look up to see Green Arrow and Hawkman and Oliver says, "How's John?" Clark says, "There's not much more they can do for him." Chloe says, "Then I guess we'll just have to wait." Hawkman says, "No more waiting. No more pairing off. We should have stuck together from the beginning." Then someone blasts in with Dr. Fate's helmet and chokes Chloe and Icicle lifts her up and says, "Your fate is in my hands. Or, I guess I should say, it's on my head." Then he drops Chloe and Courtney rushes to her. Liana's eyes glow icy-white, and she freezes his feet and his body, while Clark uses his heat vision on the helmet, Oliver shoots an arrow, Hawkman flies down and goes to swing at him, and Courtney uses the staff. Hackman swings at the helmet and it knocks him down. Icicle breaks free from the ice, and he blasts everyone away. Liana stands up and Icicle looks at her and as he's about to use his powers on her, John flies in and charges at Icicle. Icicle says, "I killed you." John says, "I'm Mars' sole survivor. There's a reason for that." Icicle blasts at John, but John turns invisible, and nothing happens. Then Clark uses his heat vision on Icicle's back and Courtney knocks him down with the staff. Hawkman looks down at Icicle and knocks the helmet right of his head and Carter catches the helmet. Clark says, "I'm sorry about your friend." Carter says, "So am I." Later, John speeds into Watchtower and Chloe thinking it's Clark says, "Clark. You know, those are some real party animals you have as friends." Chloe turns around, looks at John, and says, "If it isn't my favorite Martian. Looks like you're enjoying the return of your powers." John says, "At a cost. Doctor's Fate's final act was to restore my Martian abilities... instead of saving his own life." Chloe says, "What happens to the helmet now?" John says, "According to Hawkman someone worthy will be drawn to it. They'll become the next Doctor Fate." Chloe says, "What's next for you?" John says, "My time as a detective has allowed me to protect humans on a very personal and individual level. I've enjoyed that. So, I will continue to protect and serve using every tool I've got." Chloe says, "Me too." Chloe walks over to her computer and starts typing. John walks for to stand next to her and says, "Doctor Fate was inundated with a constant flow of visions and information. But there is a limit to how much knowledge someone can have. It drove him to the edge of sanity... and he fell off. I don't need my telepathy to know you run that risk yourself." Chloe says, "A golden helmet possessed by ancient spirits and the Watchtower are two entirely different things. I can handle it." John places his hand on Chloe's hand and says, "I only say... because I care. You, Liana, Clark... Oliver... You're my family here." The door opens and Oliver says, "Anyone home?" Chloe looks at Oliver and says, "What's up?" Oliver says, "It's... nothing, actually. I, uh... I thought I'd stop by and see if anyone was hungry." John says, "I could use some dinner. Chloe?" Chloe says, "Uh, sure. You're buying, Mr. Queen." Oliver looks at John and he says, "Don't look at me. I'm living off a policeman's salary." Oliver smiles and says, "Ah, fine. Dessert's on you." John says, "On Mars, we never had dessert. But I have grown especially fond of cookies." Chloe closes the doors of Watchtower and locks up. Meanwhile with Liana and Clark both still in their outfits they're on top of the Daily Planet. Clark says, "It's kind of weird seeing you with white hair." Liana softly smiles and says, "Well, I don't do well with masks. My identity is still hidden with my white hair and icy eyes. It felt so good to be part of a team and stop a bad guy." Clark smiles and says, "So, what do you think that Dr. Fate mean about your fate?" Liana says, "Well, obviously, you're the savior, but about what he said that I'll bring great power to the world, I think it means what I showed today. I help people with my powers, like you. Maybe this what what Irma meant about my destiny. To be a hero." Clark smiles and grabs Liana's hand and they look out into the night.
Note: Since Liana's powers are based off Killer Frost's, I made her transformation just like hers as well.
