chapter fifty four
YOU'RE A POGUE

When the group got back the chateau, the lit a campfire, all deciding to make smore. Athena sat on a chair between Pope and Kie, holding her marshmallow over the fire.
"I've had more black eyes in the last month than I've ever had." Pope stated.
"That was building up for years. Rumble in the jungle." JJ told them.
"Did you really stick up for Sarah?" John B turned to Kie.
"Of course I did." Kie shrugged. "She's not a real kook anyway."
"Tell that to Topper." John B muttered.
"Oh and Athena." Kie turned to Athena, who sat eating her burnt marshmallow quietly. "You are a real pogue."
This caught the boy's attention.
"What?"
"That's random."
"Of course she is."
"Wait." Pope stopped the other two. "Why would you think you're a real pogue?"
"The girl you were chatting with, JB, after she pushed Sarah and Kie stuck up for her, she heard something that I muttered and told me that just because I was fucking a pogue didn't make me one." Athena explained, shrugging.
"You are a real pogue." Pope reassured her.
"Yeah." Kie agreed. "I mean you were going to pummel her and that's real pogue behaviour right there."
"You were literally disowned for a portion of time and if that doesn't make you a pogue then I don't know what will." John B stated.
"Thanks." Athena looked over to JJ, who simply smiled.
"And hey, we both know we aren't just fucking, which if you hadn't already done those things, makes you a pogue anyway." The blond explained.
"Now no more sappy shit." John B shrugged, grabbing Kie's smore and taking a bit. "I just want one bite. That... mmm."
"What are you doing?" Kie exclaimed. "No, stop!"
"You're not having any of mine." JJ stated.
"I thought you were going to share." John B pouted.
"I spent my money on that." Kie told him.
"Liar!" Athena exclaimed. "I spent my money on that."
"Sixteen years in most federal prisons." John B went to grab some more crackers.
"I'm stealing your marshmallows." Kie took some of Pope's marshmallows.
"I believe that's a... not even a fair trade." Pope shook his head.
"It's not at all. Not even close." Kie admitted.
"You okay, J?" Athena asked the boy when Kie started hitting Poe's stick.
"I burnt myself." JJ pouted.
"Hey, hey." John B shushed catching all of their attention. "Someone's here."
"You don't think that Topper would..." Kie trailed off.
"I wouldn't put it past him." JJ shrugged.
"Do you have your gun?" Kie asked the boy.
"Oh now she wants the gun." JJ spoke sarcastically.
"Oh, now you don't have the gun?" Kie questioned in the same tone.
"No."
"Isn't that your secret weapon?" Kie shrugged.
"Shut up." John B ordered them, walking towards the sound, the others following.
"Jesus." JJ breathed out. "Goddamn, now she wants the gun."
"We don't need the gun, we're not killing anybody." Athena told him.
"Hey, who's out there." John B shouted.
"You kooks better not try anything." Kie shouted.
"We're not supposed to go towards the sound." Athena muttered.
"Who's there?" JJ called.
"You guys would die first in a horror movie." Athena nodded, looking up when Renfield walked out from the bushes, holding his hands up in the air.
"How y'all doing?" Renfield greeted.
"It's this piece of shit."
"You gotta be kidding me." JJ scoffed.
"Lovely evening we're having." Renfield spoke.
"We were until your piece of shit ass decided to crash it." Athena told the man, who chuckled before continuing.
"Look, I, uh I don't hold a grudge with any of y'all, all right?" He spun around, holding his jacket open to prove he had no weapons on it. "But this can go hard, or this can go easy. You know what I'm here for. Let me give you a little demonstration. You see that swing? I got the best bow hunters in the Army Rangers with me."
"Yeah? Mm-hmm." JJ nodded sarcastically.
"Hidden." Renfield whistled, an arrow whizzing past JJ and Pope's head and hitting the swing behind them. "Now they're out there. They'll stick you just as soon as I say so."
JJ went to hit Renfield on the back of the head, him whistling once more and another arrow hitting the group by JJ's foot, the group sharing a look as Athena pulled JJ back.
"Uh, uh, uh." Renfield tutted. "We clear?"
The group nodded.
"Now, I'm not going to give you a countdown or any bullshit like that. I'm just gonna whistle." Renfield explained. Pope looked around the group, who all nodded at him. The boy took the key from his pocket, holding it in his hand.
"No." He denied softly.
"Oh."
"This key belongs to my family." Pope spoke firmly.
"I'm losing my patience with you, Pope." Renfield laughed, lifting his fingers to his mouth to whistle forcing Pope to hand him the key. "Did the right thing, kid. Knowing when you don't have a choice is an underappreciated talent. You be safe. Easy there."
The man walked off, simply turning around to say. "Y'all have a good night." before whistling and leaving the premises. The group all turned to Pope, who shook his head angrily.
"I'm so sick of this shit."
The next morning, Athena decided she would go home to check on Wheezie and grab some more clothes from her bedroom — she had been wearing the same t-shirt for about three days now.
She walked up to the house, seeing Sarah at the door, Topper leaving the driveway. "Sarah!"
"Athena!" Sarah greeted happily, smiling at her sister as she hugged her.
"You okay?" Athena asked her sister.
"I'm alright." Sarah stated. "Do you know why the doors open?"
"No I just got here, I came to check on Wheezie." Athena shook her head.
"Me too."
The twins quickly entered the house, closing the door and making their way further into the house.
"Wheezie?" Sarah called.
"Hello?" Athena shouted. "Wheeze?"
The two walked up the stairs, finding the house practically abandoned.
"Where is everyone?" Sarah muttered.
"Hey Sar." Athena nodded over to the open door at the end of the corridor. the two shared a look, approaching it cautiously. Sarah pushed the door open further as the two went inside, the first thing they saw being wallpaper on the floor seemingly ripped off the walls.
"Hello?" Sarah called.
"What the hell?" Athena commented.
The twins finally looked up, looking around the room, gasping as they did.
"Oh my god."
