At some point I relaxed and thanked him, for always being there for me and he just laughed and said "what are friends for". A while later he had to go to rehearsals, but he said he'll come back right after and we'll go to dinner and the show. He left and I was alone again. I wasn't sure what to do. I had to study but I wasn't in the mood for that, so I called my mom to know why no one told me about Kate.
"Hi mom" I said when she answered her phone "Jenny honey! How are you? I miss you so much! We didn't talk for so long!" which is true, and mostly my fault, I was so busy with moving, and then Chris and Aaron and the bar, that I didn't even think to call home.
"Yes I know I'm sorry! But I've been so busy! I miss you too mom!" and I really meant it. My mom was always like one of my closest friends. She liked the same stuff as me and I was always comfortable talking to her about anything that bothered me.
"So how's NY? And your new job? Did you make any friends? And when are we seeing you? You probably heard about Kate if you called, right? So I hope you'll come for more than just the engagement party." my mom always talked and talked and following her was hard.
"One thing at a time mom. NY is great! It's an amazing place. I made some really great friends. And I'm on a leave from my job. Guess what I decided to do?" I knew mom would be happy for me. She always believed in me and told me I should do the bar.
"You're leaving your job?? Why?" she didn't sound very happy "there's a good reason for that! Just guess!" she was taking all the fun out of me telling her this. "Just tell me. You know I hate guessing" "I decided to take the bar exam" and as I finished saying it there was a loud scream on the phone which almost made me drop it.
"Finally! I'm so proud of you!! How is the studying going?" I loved how the conversation turned and I could ignore now the fact that Kate is getting married. "It's not easy, there's a lot to learn, but I study all the time and hopefully it will go well"
"I'm so proud of you! You will finally become a lawyer like you dreamt" she sounded very excited. "Yes I know. But first I need to do well on the test".
"Oh don't worry. You'll do great! But back to the important question! When are you coming to visit?" oh great. And there I thought I avoided it. "When is the engagement party?" I asked a little annoyed. "Next Thursday. But I would really love it if you'd come before and be with us. We miss you! And it's just me and dad now and the house is so empty without the 4 of you" she said a little sad.
My youngest brother John moved to London a few month ago, Kate moved to Washington a year ago to be with Justin, and Amber lived in Miami for the past few years since she got married. I've always stayed close to my parents, and me being here in NY wasn't easy for them even though it's close.
"When is everyone coming in?" I really didn't want to come early just to find Kate there and not Amber or John. "John is coming in on Wednesday night and the rest are coming in in Thursday morning. But please come before. You said you're off work! You can study here".
Going home could be nice. And I knew I'd be able to study there too. "Sure mom. Tuesday sound good?" and before I finished answering she already answered. "Yes! It'd be great! And you'll stay until Sunday. All of you will stay. We'll have a family weekend. We haven't had that for a while!" she sounded so excited, how could I let her down?
"Sure mom. Listen can we talk in a few days? I should really start studying". I didn't want to sound rude nut I really did have to get back to studying, or actually, start for the day.
"Yes yes of course. Good luck honey. I love you! And I can't wait to see you!" she said excitedly again. "Love you too mom. Bye" I said and hung up the phone. What did I get myself into? I'm really going to spend almost a week at home? I can't go there! Chris will be there! I'm not ready for this.
I couldn't call my mom and tell her now that I'm not coming! I decided to stop thinking about it for the time being and start studying. I'll worry about going home later. I studied some more, did another practice test and then I noticed the hour.
Aaron would finish rehearsals soon and would come over. So I started getting ready and just as I finished there was a knock on the door. I opened it and there was Aaron looking as good as always.
"Hey. How are you feeling now?" he asked as soon as he saw me "I'm much better. Thank you!" "Stop thanking me for being here for you! Now are you ready? I don't know about you but I'm hungry" he said and we both laughed.
"Yes I'm ready. Let's go" I said and put my hand on his arm when he offered it. We took a taxi to the restaurant and talked about his day and how rehearsals went. The restaurant we went to was beautiful. It wasn't too fancy but it had a nice atmosphere. "This place is amazing Aaron! How did you find it?" I asked in admiration.
"Before each new show I do, my patents and I always go and have dinner before, and before one of my shows they found this place, and since then we've always come here before my shows. Something about this place makes us always want to come back." he said and had a small shy smile on his face.
"Well I can see why. It is a really special place. Thanks for sharing it with me" I said and couldn't help but smile. "So what did you do today? Or did you just study all day? Because if you continue studying all the time I'm going to need to make sure to take you out more often. Studying all day every day is not good for you!" he said half serious half joking.
"Don't worry. I didn't study all day. I talked to my mom for a while. Actually I'm going home next week. So you'll have to run on your own". For a second it looked like he had a disappointed look but he went back to normal before I was even sure if something was wrong.
"When are you going? And for how long?" he sounded a little weird asking that "I'm leaving Tuesday. Until the Sunday after. Though I'm not really sure it's such a great idea. But my mom will be really upset if I cancel". I tried saying without sounding too sad.
"Why don't you think it's a good idea?" he asked a little confused. "Chris moved back there. And everyone will probably talk about the 2 of us, how great or sad it is that we broke up. That's the bad thing about a small town. Everyone knows everyone and gossips about them. I can't stand it".
"Well ignore them. You know you did the right thing. And if you have any trouble call me! Last time I didn't get to treat him the way he deserved". It didn't sound like he was joking.
"Aaron! He apologized. And he left without too many problems! I don't think he'll be too much of a problem. The gossip is what scares me ". I admitted the truth to him. "Well ignore it. As I told you this morning, marriage should be because of the love to the person and not because of what the society thinks".
"You're right. But it doesn't feel that simple" I said a little sad. "I know but you shouldn't worry. It will all work out" he said and smiled at me. We finished eating talking more about his day, and telling me stories about Brynn so I won't feel that much of a stranger when I meet her tonight, and then we walked to the theatre.
We got to the theatre just a little before the show started and I couldn't help but laugh at the expression Aaron had on his face. He seemed to not understand what he's doing on that side instead of on the stage.
"Why are you laughing at me?" he asked after a while because I couldn't stop "it's your expression. You look so lost" I said and tried to stop myself from another outburst of laughter. "Well it's because I do feel a little lost! I haven't been in the audience in so long! I'm used to being onstage. Though I do miss watching shows. My love for theatre is not just performing it. It's also watching others." he sounded so passionate about it and it was just so amazing.
"Well my love for theatre is only watching. I can't act. And I didn't work on my voice enough as a child so my singing isn't that great" looking back it made me a little sad I never tried working on it. "Well it doesn't matter. You're amazing at so many other things" he said and smiled at me. And before I could reply the theatre went dark and the show began.
The show was really great and funny and I had an amazing time. Before I knew it it was over and Aaron took me backstage to Brynn's dressing room to introduce me to her. Brynn was really sweet and funny and invited us to join her and the rest of the cast who were going out to eat ice cream.
Aaron kept laughing at me just like I did at him before, he probably saw the shock and how nervous I felt. I didn't know any of those people and they were so sweet to me which I wasn't used to. But Aaron convinced me that we should join them so we did.
Brynn kept on asking questions about me, getting to know me, and also told me about her, she tried making me feel as comfortable as I could in this new crowd. She was really sweet and I thought that could be the beginning of a really great friendship.
Aaron stayed at my side all night making sure I was ok and comfortable. At some point I got very tired and Aaron noticed and asked if I wanted to leave. Brynn looked a little disappointed but said she was also a little tired and would head home soon.
As we were about to leave and were saying goodbye to everyone Brynn came over. "Jen you should come visit us at rehearsals sometime! It'd be great to have you there! You should see what your boyfriend is working on all the time" wait. Did she just say boyfriend? She thinks Aaron and I are together?
