I woke up and the house was silent.
I looked at my alarm clock on my bedside table and it was only 7:30. I guess this is what I get for going to bed early
I got up anyway and changed and went downstairs
To no surprise no one was up yet. I went outside on the front doorstep so I wouldn't wake up anyone, also because I wanted to watch the end of the sun rise.
I started hearing footsteps approaching me. I looked up, it was Benny
"Hey there neighbor" he said
"Hey Benny" I said back "I didn't realize you lived so close"
"Yeah" he said "Just right there" he pointed to his house. "What are you doing out here anyway"?
"nothing really" I said "My family isn't up yet so I didn't want to bug them"
"Well I'm heading over to the sandlot, wanna come"? he asked
"Yeah sure" I said "wait here"
I went back inside and grabbed a piece of paper and pen and wrote on it
At the sandlot, Scotty can come when he wakes up - y/n
I put the paper on the table and grabbed my glove and went back outside
"Ok, ready" I said
Benny smiled "Let's roll"
"Scotty will come when he wakes up" I said "Well if that's ok"
"Of course" he said "the more the better"
I smiled. We walked and talked until we got to the sandlot. When we got there the other boys were sitting in the dugout
"Hey y/n, your back"! one of the boys said
"I'm back" I replied
"Ok y/n since you're probably gonna be here more now let me introduce you to everyone" Benny said
I liked when he said that I was going to be here more, I think I may have blushed a bit
"That's Timmy and Tommy Timmons" he said pointing to two boys, they both spit on the ground
"Michael 'Squints' Palledorous" he pointed to the kid with glasses, he spit on the ground
"Alan McClennan, we call him Yeah-Yeah" He spit on the ground
"Bertram Grover Weeks" he spit on the ground
"Kenny DeNunez, and Hamilton Porter" They both spit on the ground "We call him Ham"
"Guys this is Y/n L/n as you already know"
Squints spit on the ground again
"Nice to meet you all" I said
"Yeah so, she's going to play with us, now we got nine" Benny said
"Good, so Smalls isn't coming then" Squints said a bit excited
I looked at him and gave him a look "He should be coming later"
Squints looked down "Great"
"Hey, I know he is not the best but he has been improving a bit, he can throw and catch now" I said
"He better" Squints said
I rolled my eyes
"Well Squints at least we have her then" Benny said pointing the bat at me
"Yeah, she can actually play" Squints said
At this point I think my eyes were already at the back of head from rolling them so much
"Come on guys, just base up, let's play" Benny said
"Yeah, let's play before it gets ruined when Smalls gets here" Squints said
Benny poked him in the head with the bat
"Ow, sorry, sorry" he said covering his head running to right field where he played
I chuckled a bit then walked over to Benny
"Where do you want me"? I asked him
"You can take center" he said "Thats where I play when i'm not bating, so we will just switch around"
"got it" I gave him a thumbs up and ran to center
I got in a ready position and Benny got ready to bat
Kenny threw a fast one at him but CRACK! up to the ball went. Everyone watched the ball fly to the outfield. The ball was flying toward me so I moved toward it and caught it. I Threw it to Bertram at second who got Benny out right before his foot touched the base.
"Nice"!! Ham yelled
Benny looked back at me "First time in a while someone has gotten me out l/n"!
"Well then looks like I just made history" I said smiling "The first girl to get Benny Rodriguez out"
He smiled and ran up to me
"Here" he handed me the bat "It's your turn now"
I looked down at the bat and then back at Benny. I grabbed it from his hand lightly brushing it, his hand was so soft and smooth.
He pulled out his glove and ran to center where I was, while I ran to home
"Let's see it y/n"! Squints yelled
"Yeah yeah, you've got some expectations to meet now" Yeah Yeah said
"those expectations were only reality" I said smirking
I got ready to hit it raising the bat behind me, I took a deep breath and locked my eyes on the ball. Kenny threw it right down the center, I swung the bat as hard as I could. CRACK! The ball went soring. I dropped the bat and ran.
The ball landed over the fence and Benny looked and smiled at me as I ran home
"I like this girl" Ham said
"Yeah Yeah agreed" yeah yeah continued.
I stepped on home plate and Ham gave me a high five
"Nice one y/n" Scotty said walking onto the sandlot
"Hey Scotty, thanks" I said
"Here we go" Squints said
Everyone walked over to us
Benny grabbed the bat and pointed it at his head "Don't make me whack you with this"
Squints put his hands up in front of him "Woah Benny, ok i'll shut up"
"Hallelujah" Ham said
"They don't like me do they" Scotty said sadly looking down
"Well I'm not gonna deny it, but don't listen to them ok" I said "you've gotten better"
"Yeah but I still suck" Scotty said
I looked down
"At Least he admits it" Squints said quietly
"SQUINTS"!! we yelled at him in unison
"Ok, sorry" he said
"Let me help you Smalls" Benny said walking over to him. "When you throw it put your arm up back like this." he said giving him a demonstration. "then when it gets here, just let go, that simple"
"Thanks I guess" Scotty said
"You think too much" Benny said "Bet you get straight A's and shit huh"?
"No I got a B once, actually it was an A minus" He replied as I shook my head. "It should have been a B"
"Scotty this is baseball, just have fun and don't think"
"Your sisters right" Benny said
"Ok, thank guys, let's play" Scotty said
"Well about that" Benny said "the ball went over the fence so we can't play anymore"
"Great, It's only noon" Ham said
I didn't get why it was such a big deal that it went over, i'll just hop over and grab it. I started running over to the fence and then started climbing up it
"Y/N, NO"!!! Squints yelled
all the boys started sprinting to the fence
"I'm just grabbing the ball guys" I said
They didn't say anything, Benny grabbed me by my waist pulling me down from the fence and putting me on the ground
"What was that for"?! I asked
"You could have been killed"! Squints said
"Yeah Yeah, what were you thinking?!" Yeah Yeah asked
"Well you guys were upset so I thought I could just-" I said then Benny cut me off
"You can't go back there y/n" He said
"Why not?" I asked "How will we get it back?"
We don't!" Timmy said "It's history!"
"It's history!" Tommy repeated
"It's gone man" Bertram said "gone!"
"The games over" Benny said "we'll just get another ball tomorrow, we'll never see it again"
"Why not"? Scotty asked
The boys all looked at each other
"The beast" they all said in unison
"That what"? I asked
Benny walked up to me and put his hand on my shoulder "Go walk over to that fence and look through that hole" He said pointing with his other hand "but be really quiet and stay low"
I carefully and quietly walked over to the small hole in the fence Benny pointed to and peeked through it. I saw the ball that went over laying in the dirt, then a giant paw reached out and scooped it up. I ran back to the group as soon as I saw it.
"What the hell was that?!" I yelled quietly
"Camp out!" The boys said in unison again.
