The video begins with a close up of John saying, " I put too much on your shoulders I made you grow up to fast, you took care of Sam, you took care of me you did that"
Dean takes a shaky breath in and closes his eyes against the tears that flood his eyes as he finally hears the words he's been waiting for his whole life
the scene changes to Sam sitting in the impala telling Dean, " I don't understand the blind faith you have I the man, I mean, it's like you don't even question him." Dean replies, " yeah, it's called being a good son."
"No, it's not; it's a good soldier," Sam scoffs under his breath so only Jess can hear as she rubs his back soothingly.
The video resumes with a close up of John on the phone saying " I've given you an order" and switches to show he's talking to Dean, who answers "yes sir" before changing to Dean sitting in the hotel scolding Dean saying, "if something like this starts happening to your brother you pick up the phone and you call me" before Before Dean puts down what he's holding and walks toward him angrily asking "call you?"
Dean tenses watching himself stand up to his father on screen.
Dean is shown on the phone pleading, "please, I need your help, dad" on the verge of tears before it swaps to John, saying, " you are my children, I'm trying to keep you safe," to which Dean replies, "dad all do respect but that a bunch of crap."
Bobby feels a sense of pride sweep over him as he watches his boy finally say how he feels, and Sam shares a similar look of pride with him.
Dean and John walk forward to hug each other tightly as sam watches from the doorway before the scene changes to Dean in a hospital asking, "I've given everything I've ever had, and your just gonna sit there, and your gonna watch me die?" to an oblivious John "what the hell kinda father are you?" He asks enraged
"Dean, I would never watch you die," John says, his voice hollow
"I know, dad, I know," Dean admits trying to pretend he isn't on the verge of tears
close up of a possessed John pinning Dean and saying, "you know you fight and you fight for this family, but the truth is they don't need you, not as you need them," as an injured Sam watches helplessly.
"It's not true, Dean, we need you," Sam says, looking his brother right in the eyes as everyone nods their heads in agreement.
It changes to John talking to Azazel bargaining, " I will give you the colt and the bullet, but you gotta help Dean, you gotta bring him back."
Mary grabs John hand and gives him a small smile knowing he would do anything to save their family just like she would
Dean is shown standing in front of Johns burning funeral pyre before switching to Sam and Dean walking down a road and Sam saying, "this is dad I know how you felt about the man" before Dean cuts him off, saying, "you know what back off alright just because I'm not caring and sharing like you want me too" before sam interrupts him saying "no no no that's isn't what this is about Dean I don't care how you deal with this, but you have to deal with it, man."
"He's right, Dean," Bobby tells him.
"Dean, when I die, you have to deal with your grief, or it'll turn you into me." John agrees with everyone else
Dean tenses his jaw, trying to will himself to anywhere but here
The video continues with Dean angrily beating an already messed up Baby with a golf club before swapping to Ellen, telling Dean she's sorry. Dean answering, "it's okay, we're alright," as she tries again, saying, "really, I know how close you and your dad were," which causes Dean to more sternly say, "really lady, I'm fine" before giving her a look. A close up of Dean holding back tears as he says, "I was dead I should have stayed dead" to Sam, the scene changes to John saying, "I just want you to know that I am so proud of you" before the screen faded back to black
"I am proud of you Dean, I know I don't say it enough, and obviously I don stay it till it's too late, but I am proud of you," John tells him earnestly.
"for what it's worth, so am I," Mary adds with tears in her eyes
"we're all proud of the idjit; let's watch this next video," Bobby says, settling back in
The video starts with John stepping out of the shadows and Sam, who was lying on the couch gasping before switching to a younger Sam with claw marks on his face looking at John as he says, " hey boys." It changes to an older John and Sam asking "Dad" before showing John telling/ asking Sam, " I screwed up with you a lot, didn't I?" To which Sam huffs and whisper, " Nah, that's okay" John replies, " no it's not, Sammy tell me the truth" Sam trying to hold back tears, says, " I don't want to talk about that" John tells him, " you didn't have a problem talking about it before you left."
"Dad-" Sam starts to say
"Not now, Sammy, we'll talk later," John interrupts
The video continues with Sam and Dean in Sam's memories and Dean asking, "this is the night you ditched us for Stanford, isn't it" before the scene changes to John telling Sam, "last time we were together, we had one hell of a fight" and Sam replying "yes sir" it changes again to Sam and Dean walking away from John and Sam muttering "this is why I left in the first place." John hears him and asks, "what'd you say? causing Sam to whip around saying "you heard me" and John replies, "yeah, you left your brother and me we needed you you walked away sam you walked away" and slightly pushing him. Sam angrily says back "your the one who said don't come back dad your the one who closed that door, not me."
Everyone shifts awkwardly in the ensuing tension that the scene leaves
It resumes in Sam's memories with Dean asking, "this is a happy memory for you?" And Sam answering "I don't know I was on my own I finally got away from dad" before changing to John pleading with a stunned Sam, "can we not fight l? You know half the time we're fighting, and I don't even know what we're fighting about just butting heads."
"that's true," Sam says, rubbing his hands together tensely
Sam is telling John, "for me that fight, I don't even remember what I said. I mean yeah, you know you did some messed up things" then it shows clips of kid Sam asking, "Dad's gonna be here right," older Sam saying "when I told dad I was scared of the thing in my closet he gave me a '45 to which Dean asks "well what was he supposed to do?" and Sam says "I was 9 years old."
"Jesus really?" asks Jess as Sam nods sadly
"John!" Mary shouts angrily
John continues watching the screen
A crying kid Sam is shown as he's heard saying, "dad never showed, did he? Dad lied to me." The scene changes to Sam saying, "when I think about you, and I think about you a lot I don't think about our fights I think about you" the scene changes to Sam seeing John on the floor in the hospital and running to him as Sam continues "laying on the floor dead in that hospital."
The sombre silence that ensues is stifling.
The video continues with Sam telling Dean, "I'm sorry that the last time I was with him I tried to confess that I spent most of my life angry at him for all I know he died thinking I hate him" it changes to Sam crying as he watches Johns funeral pyre burn then john apologizing to Sam and him telling Sam that this was never the life he wanted for him.
"We had so many plans for both of you boys", Mary admits turning to face both of them.
"we started college funds and everything", John adds tears in his eyes.
Sam and Dean look at each other in bewilderment.
Sam is shown saying, "you know when dean came to get me at school " before it shows Sam in college telling Dean, "I swore I was done hunting for good" and older Sam continues, "I told myself one last Job, one job" The scene changes to Sam in the impala telling Dean "Dean the year that I took I had something I've never had a normal life" before showing flashbacks of him sitting at a table laughing with a woman and a man. Then it shows him saying, " I guess I really understand now," before cutting to John asking, "so you saved the world?" And showing another clip of Sam saying, "we're the guys who save the world."
"awesome" Dean breaths giving Sam a fist bump
Bobby shakes his head fondly and saying "idjits."
Sam continues on the couch "this is my life" as it cuts to Dean answering John "more than once" the scene changes to John starting to tell Sam "after your mother past" before changing to Mary burning on the ceiling as he watched he continued "all I saw was evil, I wanted you prepared" it cuts to Sam holding a gun then John continues " ready, see somewhere along the line I stopped being a father and I became your drill, Sargeant."
"I really am sorry," John says to Sam.
"I know, dad," Sam says awkwardly, not knowing what to do
The video resumes Sam telling John, "I'm sorry too, you did your best, dad you fought for us" it cuts to John shooting the Striga and pulling little Sam into his arms."You loved us," Sam continues as it shows John pulling sam into a hug and him hugging both Sam and Dean as he says, " I love you both so much" while sam dries his eyes. It shows Sam saying, "it doesn't seem fair to get all this then have to throw it away and know we have to" before changing to John telling Sam "let me go" before it shows John saying," I am so proud of you boys" before he fades away.
John gets up to pull them into a hug similar to what they just saw on screen.
