A/N: hiii everyone. welcome to the first chapter of Best Friend's Brother. i hope you like it :)

Gryffindors knew how to party.

That was one thing no Slytherin or Ravenclaw could outrank them in. See, Gryffindors have a sense of adventure, no matter how introverted they may be. They know how to have fun and they know how to turn the atmosphere of a room from boring to exciting.

That was certainly what had happened here.

Y/n had never seen her fellow Gryffindors so animated before. It was the day after their last exams so that probably had a lot to do with it, but the electricity in the room ran rampant. Students threw their hats into the air, screamed, shouted, and laughed. A large group in the corner were playing spin the bottle and cheered as Katie McClelland leaned over to kiss her crush, Marcy, on the lips. Y/n smiled to herself.

The amount of teenage energy in the room was wild. A tune suddenly started from someone's music player, and immediately everyone gathered in the center of the room and started dancing and singing. Ravenclaws mixed with Hufflepuffs, Gryffindors mixed with Slytherins. Tonight there were no barriers between houses, no rivalries to keep them apart. Tonight was all about letting go and being free. Being young and wild and stupid.

Y/n felt like she was walking on air. A goblet of pumpkin juice was gripped in one hand and Sirius Black, her best friend, held the other and used it to twirl himself like a ballerina.

"Come on, darling, spin me," slurred Sirius. His own pumpkin juice was clearly spiked, judging by his lack of balance. He suddenly got very dizzy and stumbled, a huge grin on his face.

Y/n laughed. "You certainly are the prettiest girl at the party, Sirius. Soon all the boys will be lined up to dance with you."

This brought a nice blush to his face, and he got close to y/n. His pupils were large. "Promise?"

Y/n just chuckled and pushed him away. It was no secret that Sirius liked boys as much as he liked girls, and that was quite a bit. Sirius swung all sorts of ways, including straight to the floor. He stumbled drunkenly over his own two feet and hit the ground with a thud. Students around him laughed, and Remus extended his hand to help Sirius up.

"Such a gentleman, Moony," cooed Sirius, snuggling into his friend's chest.

Remus blushed violently and pushed him off, not before scolding him for drinking irresponsibly and acting like a fool.

James was dancing with Lily over in the corner, oblivious to everything but the beautiful girl before him. Lily amused him by taking his glasses off and putting them on her own face, saying, "Merlin, James, you're blind as hell!"

It was amazing to see all her friends enjoying themselves (though perhaps not Remus, who was currently trying to talk Sirius out of sleeping with him), but y/n couldn't help feeling a little lonely. She considered going up to Thomas L'Suer, a seventh-year whom she'd liked a couple of months ago. But she found him a little, ah, preoccupied with a Hufflepuff girl in the corner.

And Lucian Malfoy? He was cute, y/n thought, in a steely sort of way. But he looked very unapproachable, huddled in the corner with his tight-knit group of Slytherin friends. They all glared as Gryffindors passed by. Obviously, they never got the memo about this being a party.

That was pretty much her last option. But that's okay, she told herself reassuringly. There's no rush to find someone special to spend my last year-and-a-half at Hogwarts with.

She just focused on the music, on her pumpkin juice, and on the energy coursing through her body. She danced with Peter, who was all alone as well, but soon he was needed to help Remus get away from a rather horny Sirius. Although from the looks of it, Remus was reluctant to do so.

She closed her eyes and swirled amidst the sea of bodies, swaying to the music and getting lost in it, letting it consume her body with warmth.

That is until she bumped into a tall figure standing right beside her.

Pumpkin juice sloshed in her cup. "Oh my god, I'm so -" She looked up and her heart got caught in her throat.

A boy with wild black hair and stormy blue-gray eyes loomed over her, close enough where she could see the slight freckles on his irritatingly perfect nose.

"No worries," he said in a smooth, deep voice. Eyes twinkling, he gave her a thousand-watt smile. "Wait, I know you! You're Sirius's friend. Y/n, right?"

Y/n willed herself not to slump to the floor in a pile of jelly. "That's me. How do you know Sirius?"

At the mention of his name, both of them glimpsed Sirius swaying with a bottle of alcohol and laughing wildly. "Sometimes I'm embarrassed to say it, but I'm his brother, Regulus Black."

Y/n knew those swirling blue-gray eyes and beautiful black hair looked familiar. The resemblance between them was clearly there, but there was something strikingly different about Regulus. The way he held himself, with his tall, lanky form; he was confident and smooth, sly and cunning, and when he looked into y/n's eyes she felt like he knew something about her that she didn't.

He was clearly a Slytherin. And clearly, more mature than Sirius. Y/n felt butterflies when he smiled at her again.

"Can I get you something to drink?" he asked.

"Hmm," she thought. "Surprise me."

Regulus's eyes twinkled. "A lady of mystery, I see. Consider it done."

Y/n's eyes followed his figure as he went to the drinks counter and got her a fresh goblet of something. Y/n sipped the last of her pumpkin juice and turned around to put it down when she was greeted by another boy standing right there.

"Oh, hey, Remus."

"Hey." He sounded out of breath. "Who were you talking to?"

"Sirius's brother, Regulus." His name sounded nice on her tongue. "He's really sweet."

"Good to hear. Wish I could say the same for Sirius."

Y/n laughed. "Aw, come on, Remus. It looked like you and him were having a lot of fun."

Remus's face heated up. "He kept telling me he wanted to ... to... you know..."

"Fuck you?"

Remus reached out and clapped his hand over y/n's mouth. "Shut up! Don't say that out loud."

Y/n repressed another burst of laughter and removed his hand from her mouth. "Oh, don't take it to heart, Remmy. You know how he gets when he's drunk. The horniest bitch alive."

"I'll say."

Y/n eyed him. "So, are you gonna do it?"

"Do what?"

"You know..." Y/n rolled her eyes and made a particularly rated R gesture to indicate what she meant.

"Of course I'm not!" he said quickly. "He's my best friend. I'm not gonna fuck my best friend when he's drunk."

"Would you do it if he wasn't?"

This caught Remus off guard. Luckily, Regulus came over just in time, holding two goblets full of an amber liquid.

"Thanks," said y/n, taking the cup from him. "What did you get me?"

"A little butterbeer. Spiked." He winked at her and Remus caught the way goosebumps rose on y/n's arms. Regulus wasn't oblivious to her reactions either. In fact, it egged him on.

"Would you like to dance with me?" he asked.

Y/n nearly choked on her butterbeer, which burned good going down. "Sure," she said nonchalantly.

Regulus took her by the hand and led to her to the middle of the room, where everyone was dancing together. Y/n looked over her shoulder at Remus and gave him an expression that said, "What the hell is happening right now?"

Remus gave her a reassuring thumbs-up and when she was no longer visible through the throng of bodies, he made his way over to Sirius.

Time was merely an illusion to y/n on the dance floor. With Regulus so close and the booze in her veins, she felt like she was flying.

When the song ended and a slow one came on, Regulus set down his goblet and hovered his hands over y/n's hips. "May I?" he asked warmly.

Y/n nodded, feeling the heat from his large palms so close. She wrapped her hands around his neck and he placed his hands on her hips and everything kind of fit together in one new, exciting jigsaw puzzle. His hands, which were quite large to y/n's delight, were just shy from her ass, but y/n was grateful he wasn't so forward like that. It would have turned her off, made her believe he just wanted to get with her tonight and that's it.

But no, Regulus was a gentleman. He asked her how exams went, about her family, about her favorite classes and he told her jokes that made no sense because at that point both of them were tipsy and everything was perfect. Y/n laughed with her real laugh, not the one she used sometimes when she was insecure around other people.

And Regulus ate it up. Her hands were in his hair, grazing the nape of his neck and his jawline. She was kind and smart and sweet and had an amazing laugh and beautiful hips which he liked to squeeze just to make her laugh again. He was grateful to the universe that he bumped into her by accident that night.

And it went like that for a while, until people started going back to their common rooms to sleep off the alcohol, until lovers kissed each other goodnight, until the sun began to peek over the horizon.

That was the beginning of the end for Regulus. His newfound weakness had finally been exposed.

Y/n.

***

A/N: what'd you think? would you dance with Regulus? I probably should have said this before, but y/n and Regulus don't know each other, despite Sirius being y/n's best friend. Sirius doesn't talk much about or associate with his brother, so there was no way of y/n ever meeting him.
