"We can make a cake!"

"Y/N... Y/N?"
From the comfort of my bed I could hear niki yelling from downstairs. She had just gotten back from the store and as much as I wanted to be happy to see her, the thoughts of my stressful work day plagued my mind. I rolled over, mentally preparing myself to get up. I hated being upset around niki, it felt selfish in a way, and that's the last thing I would want to put on her.
After taking a second to breathe, I stood up, and dragged my fuzzy sock covered feet down the stairs and into the kitchen, Niki immediately looked up at me as she heard the floor creak
"Y/N! How was work today honey?"
I couldn't help but smile at her words, she had a way of always brightening my mood, even when she didn't mean to. She stood in her usual attire, a sweater and a cute skirt, it was a style that we both shared
I sighed, looking down to hid the fact that tears had begun to form in my eyes
"It was ok..."
Her face was now overtaken by a frown, but as soon as she noticed me looking, she smiled brightly again
"I'm sorry to hear that sweetheart.. but um... I think I got something that you would like"
She dug through the bag before turning around and holding up a box of strawberry cake mix, the brightest smile on her face
"We can make a cake!"
Almost immediately, my mood had been lifted as I grabbed the cake and engulfed the small girl in a hug
"thank you angel!"

After putting away the groceries, we got to work, measuring milk, and breaking eggs. The sound of German pop music played over our shared speaker (niki had recently gotten me into her favorite songs from her home) and the warm smell of strawberry and vanilla filled the air
We giggled and danced through the kitchen, our clothes full of flour and our cheeks flushed. A loud beep erupted from the oven, telling us that the cake was done.
"Y/N!! The cake is done!!"
Niki's thick accent was almost sweeter than the sugary desert that filled the air
I smiled at her as she happily stared down at the plump pink cake with admiration in her eyes, it was one of the many things that I so dearly loved about her. She always seemed so passionate about the smallest things, it made my heart warm just thinking about it
After playfully arguing about how to decorate the cake, me wanting to make a minecraft creeper cake and niki wanting an aesthetic minimalist cake, we began decorating, obviously going with her idea
After finishing the base, niki reluctantly agreed to letting me draw little cats all over the cake, and then we were done
"thank you niki..."
I smiled at her lovingly and she looked back at me with a questioning smile
"for what?"
"for always brightening my day"
