The moment Hermione woke up on this december morning, she felt that this was going to be an extraordinary day. Something was in the wind, she knew it, and when she sat up and looked out of the window, this turned out to be true in the most literal way. Snowflakes danced in the cold breeze, covering the lands of Hogwarts with a white blanket. Hermione let out a joyful gasp and opened the dormitory's windows to inhale the cold winter air. Finally!

During the day, she quickly forgot about the morning's strange feeling. Nothing unusual happened - Ron challenged Fred and George to a food battle (and won), Neville told her about the knitted little hats his grandma sent him to keep his plants warm and Hermione spent a good portion of the day reading in her favourite spot in the Gryffindor common room. Nothing unusual, really. In the afternoon, she put her book down and asked Harry and Ron to join her for a walk through the snow. Since Harry had just given up on their game of wizard chess, the boys quickly agreed and wrapped in warming coats and long scarfs, the Golden Trio made their way out of the doors of Hogwarts and into the snowy paradise in front of them.

Hermione held out her bare hand to watch the snow flakes melt on her skin when Ron showed up at her side.
"It's really sad that you'll be gone next week," he said and rubbed his cold nose that had turned the same colour as his hair. It was true, the winter holidays started next week and Hermione would spent Christmas with her parents.
"But you will survive without me, right?" She let out a short laugh. "I'll be back in the new year. And until then, we'll write letters. You have to keep me updated!" Ron nodded. "I promise," he said in a sincere tone. "I'll tell you all about the amazing food you're missing out on, the ranking of Dumbledore's Christmas outfits and... of course, how many times I've defeated Harry in wizard chess," he added with a big grin in Harry's direction. The dark-haired boy grabbed some snow and shoved it down Ron's neck in return.
"Take that, Weasley," he said with a laugh while Ron let out a surprisingly high squeak.

Soon, the boys were play-fighting and Hermione shook her head in amusement. She would miss these idiots. But she was also looking forward to seeing her parents again. It would be nice to spend two peaceful weeks away from the wizarding world. Just when Hermione thought about all the books she planned to read during the holidays, something freezing cold hit her in the back of her head. Gasping, she pulled up her shoulders, but she couldn't prevent some of the snow from getting underneath her scarf. The melting ice water sent shivers down her spine and when Hermione put a hand on her neck, she discovered that she had been, in fact, hit by a snow ball.

She turned around, ready to shout at Harry and Ron for this ruthless attack, but no word left her mouth when she saw that the boys looked equally puzzled. Harry had been hit in the chest by a snow ball, but Ron had it even worse. The attacker managed to get a perfect shot at his face and Ron was angrily wiping the snow from his now even redder nose. Not far from the trio, Hermione heard laughter and when she turned her head, she saw them. Of course, who else would intrude this perfect winter day? A few feet across stood Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson, clearly celebrating themselves for their success. Malfoy patted Zabini on the arm, congratulating him on his shot at Ron, while Pansy, who stood closest to Hermione, shot her a provocative glance. So it was her who was responsible for the snow dripping down Hermione's neck. Out of the three, it had to be her. Black hair, decorated by snowflakes, framed Pansy's pale face, a perfect devilish smile on her lips. It was unfair. The dark-haired Slytherin was already often enough in Hermione's thoughts, keeping her lying awake late at night, and now she wanted to ruin her days, too?
