Sokka leaned down, feeling the cold water wash over his body as he did. The waterfall was numbing, as it was, after all, late fall.

"Sokka! Come on and get dressed so we can join the girls!"
He turned to see Aang, in his underwear like Sokka was, wading out to where he was to pull him towards the shore.

Sokka smirked, "You just want to see Katara aang."
"Your point being?"
"I'm coming."

But as Aang grabbed on his arm, his balance became uneven, and he fell into the water aang could barely lift his chin up to not go under in, even at 16. Even as Sokka fell, the speed increased as he fell and hit the water hard, and soon he also gathered force, and hit the bottom of the lake before the water could slow him.

He lost conscience then, only feeling the release of the chilled water, like hands cupping his face, smooth as the river stones back home in Ba Sing Se.

*~*

"Aang? Why are you carrying Sokka? Did my big brother get sleepy?" Katara cooed jokingly from a distance, not yet able to tell how Aang slumped under the weight, or the blood on Sokka's forehead. Aang carried him over his shoulders, holding Sokka's back for support.

Toph went over, and her face fell.
"What's wrong Aang? Why is Sokka nearly dead?"

Katara, upon hearing Toph and seeing Aang get a little closer, rushed over and grabbed Sokka, putting him on the ground in front of her.
"Toph, what's wrong with him, why do you think he's nearly dead?"

"His heart rate is almost nothing, it's like he has Bradycardia. Not enough Oxygen in getting throughout his body and to his brain, and his breathing is slow and harsh. I think he hit his head to. Hard. His muscles are all torn and ragged around his left side, probably where he fell."

"Thanks Toph, I know what to do."
Katara went to work, bending the fluids inside of him and the muscles they were in back together, fixing the nightmare that was pain so that it disappeared completely, for now.

"Aang, get me some water, and a wet cloth. Now please." Aang rushed over to the lake, and ripped a piece of his shirt, then wet it. Then, without so much as squeezing it out, he rushed over to Katara with the sense of fear and urgency death seemed to bring out of people. Like a clock was ticking, every second a second closer to their inevitable doom.

Toph had always found this fear stupid, after all the spirit world was definite, and just another form of life. But sensing Sokka lying there on the ground, she felt a sudden urgency to just help him, in anyway possible, at any cost. In that moment, she would do anything, anything to protect him. Quickly.

"Katara, what can I do?"
"Be silent, so I can do my work." Katara snapped, a breaking of their unspoken oath to from ever since the war ended treat each other with kindness, patience, and respect. But Toph wasn't surprised, death brought out the worst in people.

"Alright."

Katara worked for nearly two hours more. Then she announced she could do nothing more and tied bandages around Sokka's head before helping to set up camp.

*~*

Sokka awoke with what felt like tears against his forehead, and the sound of someone sobbing. He opened his eyes to try to see who it was, but... he couldn't see. He tried opening them wider and then blinking a few times, but he couldn't see a thing!

It sounded like... Toph? But Toph was 16 and the strongest person he had ever known, why would she be crying?

"Toph, are you okay?"
She looked up, seeing his open eyes and sniffed, gathering herself.
"Snoozles, you tell anyone that I was crying and I will hunt you down and kill you and your loved ones slowly and painfully." He believed it.

"Toph...  I can't see."
"What?" She sounded panicked, not fully comprehending in that moment that she too, was blind.
"You can't be. I'm the blind one, not you."
"Apparently both of us are the blind one now."
"I'm telling Katara."
"You do that."

A/N: First chapter up! So Sokka going blind would be in this case caused by nerves breaking down from head trauma. Yay research! And yes I still am writing The Blood Of Ten, this is just a side project.
