And then under the summer skies of June, there was you.

"Hey!" You heard a group of girls call out your name accompanied by the terrible giggling you knew too well.

With a brief look of annoyance that was quickly covered up by a polite smile, you stopped and turned around to greet them, "Hi—"

"Wanna join us later?"

"C'mon we're stopping by this cake shop and I'm telling you, they have the best sweets in the city!"

"Yeah you should definitely come!"

They all flashed expectant smiles your way.

Maybe this was bound to happen, especially for a transfer student like you that came all the way from Osaka, it was only natural that some of your classmates' attention were aimed at you during the first week; that's how long you assumed it would last. At least they were on a positive light, unlike...

"Watch it!"

You cocked your head towards the direction of the commotion before witnessing how another student roughly shoved the poor boy away, a series of mocking chuckles following afterwards.

Yoshino Junpei.

The first time he caught your eyes was when he came to class with a bunch of bruises on his arms. Despite trying his best to hide them, in which he ultimately failed, it wasn't hard to conclude that he was being subjected to harsh treatment by his peers. That was during your first day at Satozakura high and although he was in a different class, you couldn't help but worry whenever you two clashed ways for he had a new set of injuries every now and then.

"Who's he?" you asked once, referring to the gloomy-looking boy leaving the classroom next to yours and your classmate responded with a shrug.

"Don't know." Her indifferent tone almost immediately shifted into curiosity. "So how's Osaka by the way?"

So on and so fourth.

You did find out who he was later that day from some of the upperclassmen's jeering remarks together with those typical nasty nicknames. Unable to ignore the constant bullying directed towards him, you tried to report them— keyword: tried— but it only earned you a light threat in disguise of an advice from the homeroom teacher.

"You shouldn't be involving yourself with him." Lifting his glasses up, he smiled instantly as if to make up for his earlier statement. "How did you do with your History test? I heard that you were quite good in English."

At that, your concerns continued growing at the lack of sympathy not only from the teachers but from the other students as well.

"Um... Yoshi—"

"Yo!" A boy from your class— whom you couldn't really remember the name— slung his arm around your shoulders, cutting you off from confronting the dark-haired teen. "Tanaka's asking if you wanna join the volleyball team!" Unfortunately, you easily got lost at his chattering as he casually pulled you away from the boy.

The ignorance was appalling, you thought bitterly. Currently you were sitting inside a cafe a few blocks away from where your classmates were, hiding waiting for your order as you continuously stirred your drink with a frown.

"Welcome! How many seats would you like for today sir?"

"Just one, please."

Tuning out the buzzing noise inside the restaurant, you started wondering how it would feel like to take matters into your own hands; to put them in the exact spot as their victims so they could experience the same misery but times tenfold, for your own pretense of justice to be served just as it should be—

"Ah, I'd like to sit here."

The heaviness and thickness in the air felt suffocating that the abrupt change in atmosphere has caused you to look up, unaware that you were glaring down at no one in particular due to your thoughts. Not sure of what you were specifically searching for, your gaze soon landed at a lone man from across another table.

It's as if the moment you noticed him, a touch of uneasiness crawled up to your neck, and when his black eyes met yours along with a subtle grin— like he was purposely letting you on— you couldn't help but jump up from your seat and hurriedly walk out of that place.

Forget the popular special that was supposed to be on discount today because at that moment, you knew that your ridiculous actions were probably for the best.

And unbeknownst to you, it was indeed one of the greatest decisions you've made in your life.

'Lucky.'

Getou Suguru's smirk widened as he watched the whole place burn.
