it had been almost two years since kuroos death. kenma had longer hair, with pale skin. kenma would go to work with bags under his eyes, which would get progressively worse as the days went by. kenma would have the usual routine. get up, after many, many, hours of staying up late crying, looking at the ceiling, or talking as if kuroo was still there. this had become such a normal routine to him he was surprised when he was able to get a good night sleep, which only ever happened once or twice a month. but as the days got slower, it was only a matter of time before kuroos birthday.
kenma had been trying to avoid it, but akaashi told him he should do celebrate, and that kuroo would celebrate with him. kenma wasn't sure he would believe this, but something told kenma akaashi was right. so maybe he possibly would?
another dreadful few days go by, and sure enough it was kuroos birthday. kenma wasn't sure what to do, so he sat at the counter, until he had an idea. when the idea popped up, kenma jumped up immediately grabbing his apartment keys and walking out, leaving the apartment empty.
kenma walked and walked to where his feet took him. when he arrived, he was at the hospital kuroo stayed in. kenma walked in, and saw the receptionist. "oh my god is that you, kenma?" she asked looking at him with wide eyes. "I haven't seen you in so long!" she exclaimed with a friendly smile. "yeah, I guess so huh" kenma replied. "I actually came to ask if anyone was staying in the old room kuroo was in?" he said a little anxious. "oh no! actually, anyone hasn't been in there for a while." she said, in a calming tone. "would it be okay.. if I visited it there.." kenma replied, his voice getting quieter with each word he spoke. "oh, uhm sure!" she said getting up. "I know where it is, thank you though." kenma said. "no problem!" she said sitting back down.
kenma walked through the dreaded halls, remembering what it was like to be here with kuroo. his breath hitched as he reached the room he stayed in. it still smelled like kuroo. it still smelled like home.
with tears in his eyes, he walked in with his hands sliding on the wall. when he saw the chair the used to sit in, he couldn't help but sit in it. It felt comfy. It felt like he should've been there. kenma closed his eyes, and imagined kuroo on the bed. images of kuroo talking, smiling, and holding kenma were what all kenma could see.
kenmas eye opened to the room looking like exactly what it looked like what kuroo was there. he looked on the bed to see kuroo smiling at him. kenma gasped, tears escaping his eyes.
"hey kenma, it's been a while. I miss you a lot, you know? more than you could imagine." kuroo said with a chuckle. kenma could only look in shock, and finally hugged kuroo, tight. "kuroo, please don't leave me again." the fragile boy replied. "kuroo, I love you. please, stay with me forever." kenma said, still holding him.
"I love you more than you know kenma, I really do. please keep going, for me. just a little longer, okay? will you do that for me?" kuroo said in a caring voice. "I will, for you kuroo." kenma said, lovingly. he missed his kuroo. so, so much. "you'll see me again, kenma. I'm not sure when, but someday." kuroo said letting go of kenma. he blinked and without a trace of kuroo, he was gone.
kenma couldn't help but stay frozen in place. "but, it felt so real." he said. he looked at where he saw kuroo, no one there. kenma couldn't believe it. was that really kuroo? kenma got up and started walking out, but not without turning around. he turned and waved a small goodbye to the room. kenma thanked the receptionist, and walked out.
he went to the park him and kuroo went stargazing at, and stared at the sky. "I'll see you once again, I promise, my love." kenma said, remembering all the cheesy things kuroo would call kenma. he smiled to himself. then something caught kenmas eye.
the brightest twinkling star kenma had ever seen. he knew exactly who and what it was. "I know you hear me, right kuroo? I miss you, and the way that you held me. the way you made me feel. the happiness you gave me. I wish you were still here. not a day goes by where I don't think about you. you were my happiness, you know that, right? not a day goes by where I don't think of you. thank you for being my soulmate. thank you for showing me how to love someone. I'll cherish what we had, for the rest of my life. things would have been so much simpler if you were here. it's really difficult without you by my side. bokuto and akaashi miss you too. we all do, kuroo. I wish I was able to see you once more. to hold you like I used to. I wish I could restart to when we found out we were soulmates. I wish you never got sick. but it's okay, kuroo. you tried your best. I'm beyond proud of how long you lasted. I love you, kuroo. I'll say it everyday until my days are up, cause I mean it. I love you, tetsuro kuroo." kenma said, still looking up at the sky.
the star twinkled after kenma had poured his heart out. kenma smiled again, knowing that was a sign that kuroo heard him. that night, kenma felt comfortable in his bed, as if kuroo was still with him, giving him a good night sleep. he woke up to an empty bed, but he knew kuroo was with him. kenma knew, he was safe and okay, as long as kuroo was. "until we meet again, tetsuro."
